My stylist rents space at Say Lula and does hair twice a week. I've been seeing Emalyn for over a year now, and I'm glad I was able to find a new stylist after shopping around for years. Located in the heart of Mission Hills with all the great restaurants, eateries, and shops. A couple miles off the I-5 and super convenient as the salon has a dedicated parking lot for customers. Shares a lot with 2 other businesses, and I've never had a problem with parking. The salon is vibrant, clean, and has several stylist chairs. Every time I come in the employees are always very friendly and acknowledge me when Emalyn is in the back prepping for the day. Refreshments are available if you're waiting or in the chair. Emalyn listens to what you want for your hair and I always get the same cut - Keep the length, layers, and side bangs. Emalyn is super busy so definitely book as far in advance as possible. Lisa Telepman of Say Lula Salon is one of the most amazing hair artists in San Diego. Beyond her work ethic and clear talent lies just an incredibly kind and genuine person. From the moment that I met Lisa in person, her reputation had preceded her and I don't think there's one person out there that could say a bad thing about her. One of the jobs of hair dressers is to make connections, and Lisa does that through her scissors, but also through her ears because she is an incredible listener, maybe one of the best I've ever met. This review is for a specific stylist at Say Lula, Vera Blatchley. Vera has been cutting my hair for over 2 years. By far the longest I've had one barber. I've alway kind of dreaded getting my hair cut. I don't know how to describe what I want and leave disappointed. Since Vera has been my barber I've not had that problem. She is easy to talk to and takes the time to know what her clients want and how to get your hair just right. I've always been satisfied with the quality of her work and her professionalism. If you're looking for a reliable barber I strongly recommend Vera for all your styling needs. She charges a very reasonable $30 for a standard haircut. I recommend you schedule an appointment as she is usually book out a week or so in advance and getting a walk-in would be very unusual. I can't comment on the other stylists at Say Lula as I've only had Vera cut my hair. I do notice there is always a steady flow of happy customers. The day before my grad party I decided to text her to try and schedule and she was able to accommodate due to a cancel! Happy I found this salon via Groupon. Honestly, unless you're looking for it, it's easy to pass right by it. It's located by Cafe Bleu on Washington and is awesome inside filled with art all over the walls and eclectic furniture. My appointment was with Vanessa who was amazing! The last person I got my hair cut from (wasn't at Say Lula) seemed annoyed by me (I can only assume because I was a Groupon customer) and did not smile once. Luckily, on my quest to find a consistent stylist, Vanessa was friendly, offered me something to drink, and really seemed to listen to what I wanted and had ideas for my hair. We decided on better blending of my layers and balayage coloring, which turned out fantastic! Glad to have found this salon and will be back for my next cut. Booking an appointment online is super easy as well, so that's a bonus. Tip: For parking, up one block is street parking without meters or a timed parking sign. This place is awesome! When I first walked in, I loved the photos hanging from the clothesline and the mural they had. One of the other things I noticed were all the paintings and it turns out they had a art show that evening and invited me to come as well. I loved the whole artsy vibe and it was just all around comfortable. I tagged along with my sister for her haircut with Nancy and she claimed that Nancy was AMAZING. I'd have to agree. We both generally want the same thing and we always tell the hairstylist that we want layers and for our hair to look full. My daughter purchased a Groupon for my birthday. I was not able to get an appointment until Aug 25th. The place is really cute. Everyone was friendly. There is a little help yourself beverage bar which included coffee or water. Jordan was really nice and she did my gel nails and pedicure. Another thing that is great, since the Groupon was such a hit and it was hard to get an appointment, Jordan reassured me that my other gel nail and pedicure that came with my coupon, she will honor even though it will expire on September 1st. Say no no!!! to Say LuLU Had a really bad customer service experience with this salon, which made me really sad. It's really close to where I live and I do a cut and color every six weeks, with other services from time to time. But my hair is long and it's really important to keep up with it. My latest hairdresser moved too far east and I'm shopping for someone in Mission Hills. I made my appt 5 weeks in advance, running across a groupon I made 2 consecutive appts, one for the groupon discounted service and one for the regular price color service. Same technician, Lisa T at 1 and 2pm on Friday, Feb 14. Their calendar system reminded me and required me to confirm multiple times...no problem, I want to respect their time and will show up on time. So I show up on time...and 1 person gets me a robe and I sit ignored for 30 mins while my stylist is working slowly and chatting with a previous client. No one acknowledges me or says anything until I catch the eye of another stylist at 1:30. At this point I'm really feeling disrespected, I had a last min important call come up that I cut short so I wouldn't keep THEM waiting. No one says the simple "we're sorry" or says this is very rare...the stylist (Lisa) never even looked me in the face. The other person was cordial but frankly a little disrespectful as soon as she found out I was a "groupon" client. But she was nice enough to offer to get me going at about 1:40...but also kind of acted like she was doing me a favor and mentioned the Groupon. A few simple words...like "We are so sorry, this is NOT how we typically treat customers." Instead she blamed the previous customer for being late and long story short said it was up to me if I wanted to leave. In the end, I took it as an omen that this tiny little shop much not need my $150-200 every 5 weeks. I had plenty of time to see how other people were being treated - the other stylists seemed to be on schedule. I live by here and drive by and never see anyone in here, so take that as an indication of their customer service. I've decided to also complain to Groupon and ask for a refund, something I've never done. But since they were unable to fulfill the service, it's worth a shot. read more

Finally I got a call back and set up an appointment. I still was not very impressed. It was just okay... The girl didn't even try to get me to come back to set another appointment with her. When you have a groupon they really treat you differently. When you are laying down getting your hair washed all you can see is the 3 inches of dust on the fans. I've been going to Say Lula the past 8 or so months and have mixed feelings. The salon is cute and easy to find. Kathleen Doyle is my hair stylist and I'm afraid to say I won't be coming back anymore. She colors and cuts hair just fine, but it's her unprofessionalism that turned me away. My last appointment she accidentally scheduled me on her day off, so she contacted me to reschedule for later that week. I told her I needed to leave the salon by 5pm to get to class on time (which didn't happen). Well I show up for my appointment, and she wasn't even there! She was out picking up her son, which I know family is important, but so is being on time for your clients. She ended up being 20 minutes late and when she arrived, I still had to wait because she had to set her son up in back with his homework. While my hair was processing her cousins came in the salon to say hi, and after washing my hair, she sent me back to the chair where I waited 5 minutes so she could go in the back to go get something for said cousins. In which she stood and talked to them the remaining of time doing my hair about some music festival they were all going to that weekend. No it's okay, just ignore your client. But that's not the end of it, I've been thinking of redoing my ombré, but the past two times Kathleen has done my hair, she complained about how she wishes ombre's would go out of style because she doesn't like doing them (well it's a good thing I didn't ask her to redo mine!). Oh also, she never uses any product in my hair for styling! :( It's unfortunate but she needs to be more professional with clients, because she lost me as one. read more

Angela is right-- Rachel is a perfectionist whe it comes to hair, and will take the extra steps to have you leave DONE. She cut my hair dry so that she could get a feel for how it would lay. She flat-ironed everything, which was nice of her, even though I'm not a huge fan of the flat iron. I just wish she would stop talking about bodybuilding the whole freakin time. I guess it's understandable that a body builder would be self-absorbed, but I got a little annnoyed of her talking to her trainer/photographer/bikini shopper every five minutes. That said, I don't have to be BFF with Rachel, I just have to let her cut my hair and color it. It looks nice. I like it. I must say, I was a little nervous for my appointment after reading some of the negative reviews. I loved my previous hair stylist, but the salon closed, so I got a Groupon for Say Lula to try it out. Wasn't sure it was really my scene, but I have to say, I LOVE it! Jenna cut my hair and took amazing care of me! She shampooed, conditioned, re-conditioned, and extra-conditioned my dried, damaged hair because she saw it needed some extra love. She massaged my scalp until I nearly fell asleep, and even massaged my shoulders and neck in between cutting my hair, I was in heaven. I told Jenna that I just wanted a basic trim and my layers cleaned up and then she worked her magic! She was very quiet and thoughtful as she worked methodically on my hair to make sure it looked good on ME, and made this very clear. At first I thought she got a little too creative and cut off more than I wanted, but then I realized she just made it so that my hair felt lighter and looked a good, natural shape--the length was still there! I cannot stop gushing to people about how great my experience with Jenna was! I think each person in the salon seems to fit different customers really well, but they are all very talented, and Jenna went above and beyond what I expected from a cheap Groupon! Because I am poor, every 4-6 months, I go to different salons to get my hair cut and highlighted. After my cut and color with Jenna last night, i will not longer do that. My hair looks amazing. I haven't liked my color this much since I first started getting highlights, almost 20 years ago. I also went in there with a weird, choppy hair cut from previous stylist, but Jenna had no problem fixing my hair. She was so thoughtful when cutting my hair. When I go to a salon, I like to just sit and read, and I appreciate a stylist that can pick up on that. AND I got a wonderful shoulder massage too! Out of the 5+ years I've been an avid Yelp user, this will be my first review. I've always just read others' reviews and never felt the need to leave one myself until my experiences with Dylan at Say Lula. I have a huge head of hair that is thick, dense & long and always feel bad for any hairdressers stuck with the task of trying to blow dry this thing. I made the mistake of getting highlights and then a brazilian blowout this summer and the bottom four inches of my hair were "noodly" as Dylan explained it. Long story short, my hair was fried, frizzled, and just bad news all together. I have hair anxiety and am always scared to get my hair cut shorter than my ribs but Dylan was very good at telling you exactly what the deal is with your hair and what you're going to need to do to get it back to being healthy. Hidden in "the Barrio" is an artsy East Village-type neighborhood. Anywho, I have never heard of this salon, but I follow wherever my stylist Jerzee goes. This by far has been the nicest salons I have been too. I look Jerzee and how she always knows how to cut my hair...a lot of the stylists there are TOP stylists as shown by their biographies on the website. The salon is cool too, they have all this artwork by local artists throughout the salon and the apartments near by have great murals. I love this place, and will be coming back FOR SUREE!! read more

First time coming here, best experience ever!!! Boyfriend been hassling me about getting my hair cut and added that i should die my hair since i've had my look since forever (meaning i never died or changed my hair color ever!!!) so i went online and found a great groupon for 56 dollars which entitled me a shampooed/conditioned, partial high lights and styled hair cut. what can beat that that?!?!? Usually when I see someone whose haircut I adore and ask them who cuts their hair... they reply with "so and so at so and so salon..." (and I never follow suit.) But this time, when I asked a girl whom I'd noticed at a many Writer (a rad local band) and other indie shows around town who had cut her tresses... she simply replied, "I do." Having such a unique response and name as Alathea, I must admit... I had expectations. Not only good ones, but unique ones. I was a bit nervous, as I typically see the same stylist for a while until I feel I am up for some new ideas/energy. Recently, I had starting seeing my old stylist again, so felt it was a bit preemptive to be seeing someone new already. I was relieved to vibe on her calm, yet subtlety energetic energy upon entering the salon. She spent a good five to ten minutes listening to my vision and concerns while also inputting her ideas and looking through pictures in some fashion magazines with me. I must have seemed like three different people in one, "I want it full, but texturized. Piece-ey, but not too thin. Long, but layered." Somehow, she grasped what I was going for and went to it. (And then last minute I showed her another picture. Exactly what I wanted. Catch all that?) Somehow, after the cut, blow-dry and making waves with the flat iron... My hair actually looked like the last picture I showed her! Magic? Attention to detail? Manifestation? I don't know... what I do know is... my hair still looked rad the next day AND today after I have washed and styled it on my own. (Styled it as in.. I threw some product in it, blow dried my bangs, and left the house as the rest of it air dries.) I also really appreciated her personality. We chatted, but only when it was natural and we felt like it. She didn't pry into personal life or talk just to make conversation. Also, very grateful for her tips on how to use the products I already have at home, as I was not ready to purchase new ones. She specializes in curly hair and was trained at Toni and Guy... so you know she has an eye for detail and technical skills. I got a cut and style last week before I went out of town for my birthday and was really happy with it. The stylist was really friendly and had tons of experience on curly hair which was awesome for me. She managed to cut, blow dry and flat iron my very curly hair in like an hour. It stayed straight and sleek the entire time I was away and I absolutely loved that she didn't douse me in product :P I got a Groupon for the place and for the price I paid it was an absolute STEAL. My only "not so good" comments would probably be that if their small parking lot is full, parking in that area is a KILLER. Other than that, this place is definitely worth checking out. Had an AMAZING experience at Say Lula with Danielle. I had been on quite a hair stylist bender and was SO tired of paying over $200 for a cut and color that was poorly done. Since I was jumping from random salon to random salon trying to find my perfect Goldilocks of a stylist, I figured I might as well try a Bloomspot offer - at least if I ended up hating it, it'd be only $50 out of my pocket. So, with my expectations at rock bottom, I walked into Say Lula for a cut and color with Danielle. She was friendly, hilarious, and knew what she was doing. So glad I made it to Say Luna today! I live in OB and have tried the trendy hair salons in my neighborhood and always left with a decent sized bill and not too impressed with my hair. I have no problem paying $100 for a cut and color - but I want to love it, not just be "ok" with it. I got a deal through Elivelife and booked my appt. at Say Luna for a cut & color. Lisa, the owner, hooked me up with exactly what I asked for! I loved the spot, the place's look and vibe is chic with a 70s feel. The walls are covered with unique local art that is priced affordably ( hate when you admire a piece of art and walk away balking at the price - sooo not the case here!) All in all - I give them 5 stars and will make the trip south to see Lisa again and took a handful of cards to share and hope that I can send some more business her way.
