It was lunchtime on Mother's Day and we came to the restaurant to celebrate! In addition to me was my wife; two of my son's; my son's wife; their 1 month old, first child (our granddaughter , and thus, our daughter-in-law's very first Mother's Day!); as well as my daughter-in-law's parents. I ordered a simple steak dinner cooked medium. The steak arrived well done...VERY, well done! I'm not one to nitpick, but this was not nitpicking...a professional chef should EASILY know the difference between a steak that is medium vs VERY well done. An attentive waitress might possibly even notice herself before serving it...though I would not require this of her as it is the chef's responsibility to properly cook the food to order. However, I would expect her to know the difference once she has seen the steak cut open...and she did see it cut open, but said nothing!). This was my first visit to this restaurant and I was expecting a first rate experience...ESPECIALLY from the food! So I was quite frankly surprised, and disappointed that the chef served, and the waitress accepted from the chef, a very obviously overcooked steak! Oh well. As for the rest of the food and service...it was acceptable. Nothing to get excited over, but...acceptable. read more

I must admit that I've never been a fan of the overall ambiance or smell of this place, but if you can get past those two things, what you stand to receive is some fresh seafood at decent prices. I recently stopped in for lunch and ordered your standard fish and chips meal. While I'm not a fan of the breading (it has a cinnamony taste to it), overall, the fish was fresh, perfectly cooked and the fries were excellent!! I might need to branch out next time as the salmon looked amazing!! If you're wondering about the smell, it's a mixture between too much parfume and pine-sol. Came here tonight for valentines dinner with my husband. Host was able to seat us right away even without a reservation which was very nice, very friendly service, ambiance is classy and understated. Food is a solid 4.5 stars, it's not spectacular but it is well executed and hits the spot for any true craving. Really unbeatable for seafood dinner short of shacks on the shore in summertime. Saybrook Fish House is easily one of the best restaurants in CT. Starting strong with this review. As someone who dines out often with my girlfriend we try many spots and this restaurant has exceeded all expectations. From start to finish we had a pleasant time. Being greeted at the door by a host who was actually present unlike many other restaurants was fantastic and he, I believe his name was Mark, was just as great. We were seated and had orders taken from a girl named Katie who was equally as great and had an insanely good buffalo chicken wrap (it's not just seafood there). Honestly I remembered both names because they made such a positive impression during my time there. I'd suggest the SFH to anyone looking for a great meal at a reasonable price. read more

We have eaten here on numerous occasions throughout the years. From celebrating birthdays, New Year's Eve, and most recently celebrating my daughter's graduation with family and friends. The graduation party truly exemplified what a good restaurant this is. We were greeted warmly at the door then the host directed our party of 12 into a private room. The service was great and the food was outstanding. Everyone thought this restaurant was a great choice. Even those who don't like fish can have other options including steak, chicken, pasta, and salads. For those who have room for dessert, there is plenty to choose from. read more

I cannot say enough about this restaurant. The staff members, including waitress Katie and manager John, are professional and courteous. They are a credit to the service industry. We had a small issue with a few of our dinners and they jumped right in to correct things- showing patience, personal interest and class in how they set things right. They went above and beyond to ensure our complete satisfaction! Our evening and meal were fantastic. We were here from the west coast visiting family who strongly recommended The Saybrook, and, after experiencing the delicious dinner, amazing desserts and absolutely wonderful service, I can honestly say that this will be our new special place to celebrate all of our family trips to CT! Blah. Poor service. Mediocre Food. Dingy dark atmosphere. My family took my father here for his birthday celebration and they just BLEW it. The two tables on either side of us (one which got there 1 min before and the other who showed up 20 mins after us) both were served, ate, paid and left BEFORE we got our entrees. We had no appetizers so that wasn't the issue. We ordered as soon as we sat down...we meant business and came hungry. Naturally, I was appalled since this was for my father's special day. I spoke with the manager and he made a sad attempt to compensate for our extremely LONG wait for our food. I don't think I've ever waited a BLOODY HOUR after ordering (without water refills) before. Bravo Saybrook, you sunk my battleship. The manager credited us my father's single drink and expected us to pay the rest. Seriously? My husband and I stopped in for lunch last Saturday, first time there . We opted to sit in the bar because there were only 4 other people there and it was quite. There was a young man at the entrance, we said hi. He said enjoy . We sat down, it took 15 mins for us to get menu's and that was when my husband went and got them . The bar staff was very distracted , several people walked past us. , yes ignored !,, We were asked if we were ready to order , as my husband was bringing over the menus. Less than impressed. When we did order the food it was good, but then I went to the ladies room. FYI. Dust the stall walls, they are disgusting. If the bathrooms aren't clean , what's the condition of the kitchen. Sorry. Came with a party of 4 this past week: Ordered: Mussels with white wine sauce, Clam chowder, crab cakes, oysters on the half shell, lobster rolls, fried calamari and fried whole belly clams. Mussels with white wine sauce: The sauce was amazing - so much so that my friend asked for extra bread. Portion size was big. Clam Chowder: Needed more flavor and came out a little lukewarm instead of hot. Crab Cakes: Perfect proportion of breadcrumbs and crab meat, delicious. "Better than Maryland blue crab - crab cakes" Oysters: Good and fresh Lobster Rolls: Warm, good portions of lobster, extra side of butter so the bread didn't get soggy or greasy. Delicious. Fried calamari: Cooked well, went great with the marinara sauce. Fried Whole Belly Clams: The best I've ever had. Would order a million times over again. Fresh, no fishy taste, perfect batter. First time here, a little disappointed. The food was good but the service was slow and it wasn't even super busy. There was plenty of waitstaff available. We were there for an hour and a half. Our waitress was nice but was attentive and talkative to other tables except us so we felt a bit neglected. For example, my husband asked for a drink refill and never got it. However, the table behind us received several drink orders after his request. Just expected more based on the price we paid for the food. Wouldn't really go back based on this experience. read more

I'm was a first time diner at the Saybrook Fish House last night. It was an exceptional dining experience!! All dishes were prepared to perfection for our party of 4. I started with the Fried Oysters and had the Bouillabaisse as an entre'. Both dishes were served piping hot and perfectly done. I've enjoyed Bouillabaisse around the country and in Europe and I believe this dish was the best I've ever had. Two other members in our group ordered the Baked Stuffed Shrimp and were equally impressed. Our server, Erik, was very friendly, attentive, professional and an excellent representative of the restaurant. I highly recommend this establishment and all it has to offer! This place is great - one of my all-time favorites! The food is very comparable to other much more expensive places down in Avon and Farmington (names not to be named) and if you must know, the lobster roll is the best I've ever had. The shrimp is some of the best i've had as well. I usually eat at the bar because of the low price bar menu and TVs. Good beer selection on tap as well. Staff is friendly and the owner is usually there to greet guests and make sure their experience is top notch. It was our anniversary so my husband and I decided to get some seafood at Saybrook Fish House. It was a Monday night so it wasn't very busy at all. We got the perfect place to sit in front of the fireplace. Our waiter ken was very pleasant. I was tempted by all the specials he rattled off to us but decided to have the baked stuffed shrimp that everyone talks about. I must say it was the best stuffed shrimp I have ever had. 5 jumbo shrimp stuffed with their special seafood stuffing and I do mean seafood! There's hardly any breading in it at all..just delicious! My husband decided on the swordfish special of the night and that was fabulous also...not fishy at all. ..mashed potatoes delicious, asparagus lightly grilled, just wonderful! We told them when we came in that this was our anniversary dinner and they surprised us at the end of our meal with a slice of their delicious lemon cream cake to split . That was a nice touch and the cake light and lemony and very delicious. As we were walking out the door my husband and I looked at each other and said "why don't we come here more often?? The inside is a little dated, but I don't really care. The food is quite tasty, large portions, and priced ok for what it is.

Fish is a hard product to prepare. If a restaurant is a "fish house" than that food is it's best. At Saybrook Fish House I eat there for their very good food and their pleasant staff and decor. I don't want to go there for a New York strip but my son-in-law, a non fish eater, raved about it at a family gathering. I've eaten at 5 star places all over the globe and I agree Saybrook is not there, yet. FOUR star is not a bad rating. The food is hot, well seasoned, and served with a smile. The prices are high in off-season or around holidays as you would expect. Their fish house clams in garlic wine sauce is to die for. I might just get myself 5 orders and forego the entree. Their lobsta is new england style and the stuffing is loaded with shrimp and scallops. Way to go Saybrook - I talked myself into going tonite with my wife - see you there! read more

Food was pretty good. Had the poiseden adventure which was good but needed some more flavor, very bland, but there was a lot of seafood in it (scallops, crab legs, mussel, clam, lobster claw, shrimp) served over pasta. Had couple appetizers, steamers were my favorite. read more

We were hungry and wanted seafood, so we decided to give the Canton Saybrook Fishhouse a chance. I've been to the one in Rocky Hill a few times and it was always hit or miss. I'd say the Canton restaurant was a miss. We started out ordering steamed littlenecks because we had been craving them since the weather was getting warmer. They looked delicious, but they were FULL of sand. Each one was crunchier than the next. There is not much worse than eating sandy seafood. The salad was great, as it always is. I ordered the seafood combo for my meal, 3 different types of seafood: scrod, stuffed shrimp and something else. It was extremely bland and I had to douse it in salt. Under the fish was brown rice with veggies, which was also very bland. Our waitress disappeared intermittently and another waiter ended up bringing us our food and refilling our drinks - which reminders me - REFILLS ON SODA ARE NOT FREE. Not that is costs a lot, but get with the times and give free refills. Anyway, not sure I would go back. Not worth the money. read more

I will keep this simple. Lived in Canton since 1966 and have be going to the Fish House since opening well over 20 years. Only way to say it that in the last five years this place does not deserve your patronage. The staff is rude, condescending and insulting. I will not go into the details. Each experience keeps me away for a least six months,returning hoping that it would improve. I would say most of the residents in town that I have spoken to agree 100%. Their quote "I will never go back". I have finally joined these ranks. Point to be made if locals are of this mind, that says it all. Besides the food is average and not consistent, maybe not able to retain good chefs.By the way they were out of some Drafts, and get this, no mussels.Major Fail! read more

The fish house salad is big and fresh with a nice variety of salad with two great homemade dressings. This salad is free with every entree. The sea scallops were good, but not outstanding. A big portion at a good price. Came with a nice, big mix of steamed side veggies that were okay. Good, consistent quality that you can count on every time. read more

My wife and I enjoyed our diner very much. We ordered crab cakes for an appetizer that was very delicious and went very well with the spicy tarter sauce. For diner, my wife ordered the Linguini with White Clam Sauce which she thought was excellent. I ordered the Bouillabaisse which comes with "shrimp, scallops, lobster, crab, clams, mussels and fish simmered in a saffron spiced broth with onions, tomatoes, wine, olive oil and garlic."...it was amazing! Maybe the best seafood dish I have ever eaten. :) The only complaint I would have is that the service was a little slow and I wish they offered a nice, crusty bread to soak up some of that fabulous broth in the Bouillabaisse. read more

Went with my husband for a late lunch . I was a little hesitant because dinning room was closed between 2-4 for service but they were serving in the bar, BUT it was a great meal! I highly recommend the escargot and mussels appetizer! The calamari Caesar salad was to die for!!!!! read more

I'm giving a one star review so the owner will find this well. Food was great, 4.5 stars, but at the end I found out I was charged $15 for fountain drinks. We ordered two and had 3 refills as the cups where filled to the brim with ice. Called manager over after getting bill and found out it's the owners policy to charge for every refill. NEVER in my life have I heard of a policy such as this for fountain drinks. I was dead set on reducing the tip by $10 but I figured a review would help more than punishing the waiter. It would behoove you to either (A) inform customers of this prior to happily giving them ice filled refills or (B), the main stream normal choice, to change the policy to complimentary refills. read more

Not a great experience- My friends and I have been going to the FH for over 30 years. In the past several years it has been a go-to place for birthday celebrations. Last night was the most disappointing experience we have ever had there. Five of us were ordering dinner (3 birthday celebrations). First, we asked for separate checks and were told "No, it wouldn't be possible" BUT, "I can take 5 separate forms of payment- that is no problem" Well isn't that nice- we still would have to figure the entire bill out. We have been to MANY restaurants in the area (all price ranges: Flemings, Grants, Wooden Tap, George's, Cheesecake Factory, Harvest, J. Timothy's to name a few) and traveled all over, and this is the first time in a VERY long time we have been told NO when asking for separate checks! It is 2018- Really? That was just the beginning. When it was determined by 3 people at my table I was served Chardonnay instead of Pinot Grigio, I was made to feel as though I was was wrong. What happened to the customer is always right? This error was rectified, yet no one would acknowledge there was even a slight POSSIBILITY someone could have poured the wrong wine! When 4 of us at the table ordered a small dinner salad each, we were served a communal salad. This was not OUR choice. The waitress never even asked us if this would be OK. I usually oder a salad to have lunch the next day- not that I should have to explain this to anyone as I was paying extra for a salad. Sometime during the time we were eating dinner, the remainder of the communal salad was taken away-,-no one asked if we wanted it boxed to go. There was quite a bit left as I had to insist I have my own salad. While the food was good as usual, the lack of service and attitude was so upsetting and disappointing, we all felt we need to find a new celebration restaurant for awhile. Had the most embarrassing moment at the fish house tonight. Met up with a couple for our annual holiday dinner get together (been going to Saybrook for years) at 5:30. After 3 hours and 3 drinks each, we were informed that we were cut off. The waitress explained after 4 drinks they could no longer serve us alcohol. I pointed out that we hadn't yet had 4 drinks. The waitress said,"it takes alcohol about an hour to metabolize".???? I looked around, many tables appeared to have been served more than 4 drinks...How do you determine the allocation of a bottle of wine? I did not see any sign indicating a new policy of serving alcohol, nor were we informed at the start of dinner. We were not belligerant, argumentative, or falling down drunk. In fact, service was slow hence the 3 hours it took to get through dinner. A manager never made an appearance, bartender disappeared, and we were left with no real explanation.??? Never thought at my age (50+), I would be shut off!! :) So, fair warning..very disappointing..Would not recommend..not that the food is that great to begin with...We just liked the casual atmosphere....Oh well...live and learn! read more
