My son and I wanted to go for a motorcycle ride. We live a good distance apart and decided to go somewhere halfway. The Saybrook Fishhouse became a choice after reviewing on yelp. Fried oysters were a a special this afternoon. I love them and the ones I get in Naples Florida are the so good. I have to say the Fishhouse was the best. Son had clams and were great also. Good portions. We were full when we left. Ken was a fun waiter and was very happy to serve us. The building is a stand alone with huge parking lot in the middle of a triangle of two highways. It's very clean for and older place and has that cozy felling. Vey much like you would fine at nicer fish restaurants at the shore. You would think the ocean was just outside the window. Don't know why someone wrote earlier that they couldn't find the bathrooms? They are at the front door when you walk in! And clean with tile, etc. We liked it so much we are going there again on the October 31st with the wives before me and mine head for Florida for the winter. The food is delicious and the bar menu is very affordable for seafood. I got the pesto salmon off the bar menu which was delicious once I removed all the tomatoes and pesto off the top. The fish was perfectly cooked along with the vegetables and a super tasty rice underneath. If you like salmon order it the traditional way and you will be more than satisfied. read more

Initially I was impressed as the waitress came over right away with the specials and menus. We ordered the scallops appetizer, onion soup, surf and turf, and salad with spiced shrimp. The waitress brought over a starter salad-The scallops were bland and the bacon they were wrapped in was rubbery. However, The French onion soup was really good. The shrimp salad was just a house salsa with 5 extremely over cooked shrimp pieces- not impressed. The steak from the surf and turf resembled a charred baseball even when it was ordered medium. Very hard and tough to swallow. It was sent back and another was given. To my disappointment it was really bland. The good thing was the stuffed shrimp that came with the meal was to die for. We come here a couple times each year when the family is in the mood for seafood. While the seafood is well-prepared and tasty, the highlight of the meal is usually the house salad and bread basket that precedes the meal! They offer two house dressings that are among my all-time favorites: a creamy garlic and a champagne vinaigrette. Yum! I'm not a salad dressing person but I've got to say that it's worth a trip to sample these home-crafted delights. Similarly, a fine assortment of fresh baked bread and breadsticks. read more

This used to be our favorite place to go out for a date night. They used to serve a cheese and fruit platter when you got there and the food was awesome. The past couple of times we went the food was only ok and they did away with the cheese and fruit a while ago. The prices are pretty high for the small amount of seafood you actually get. Yesterday was my birthday and my husband told me I can pick ANYWHERE I wanted for dinner. So being the stuffed shrimp lover that I am i chose to celebrate here. We arrived around 6pm and were promptly seated. Our waitresse's name was Tara and she was absolutely wonderful!! My husband told her it was my birthday in which she wished me a happy birthday. We also enjoy coming here because they have non fish menu items that my husband can enjoy because he isn't a fish fan. He ordered the chicken Marsala, which was delicious and i of course had the stuffed shrimp which was out of this world. We also love their garlic salad dressing, yum!! After dinner we were trying to decide about dessert but we were both stuffed. I looked up and here comes our wonderful waitress Tara with a chocolate mousse dessert and a candle. That was the nicest thing I would've ever expected. At this time the dining room was very busy yet she took the time to make sure I felt special. So thank you Tara!!! I've been going to Saybrook Fish House for years now. It's become my go-to restaurant whenever there's reason to celebrate. The service isn't always spectacular and the prices aren't cheap, but the food more than makes up for it. It's not easy to find good seafood in the Simsbury/Avon area, and being from Southeast CT, I know good seafood when I taste it. Their fish is nice and fresh, and they've even got a nice selections of beers on tap and wines to pair with your meal. I have eaten here in the past and always satisfied. It had been a couple of years, so I was hoping the quality and service were still high : D To my surprise, they now have outdoor dining, which was very wonderful. We ordered salad, with freshly made creamy garlic dressing, Clam Strips w/fries, and stuffed mushrooms, as we only wanted appetizers. Everything was fresh and delicious! Here is a place that I have not been to in almost 20 years. But after googling best baked stuffed shrimp in Ct this came up second on the list. The decor I don't think has changed in 20 years. Very dark. Very dated. Our waitress was average at best. Not friendly. Not rude. Very generic. We started with fried calamari that after chewing one ring for 5 minutes I had to spit it out in fear of choking to death. It was like chewing a rubber band. The hot peppers were better than the calamari. The salad was excellent. Fresh. The dressings were good. Very enjoyable And now for the main reason we came here. The baked stuffed shrimp. The best in Ct. Ehhh. Not exactly. When it was brought to the table I became a little concerned. It looked green. But it was just an over abundance of celery and a lot of other things. Scallops and something that was odd. Shrimp. Baby shrimp. I never had baked stuffed shrimp that is stuffed with shrimp. And maybe a cracker or bread stuffing?? Lots and lots of stuffing. After taking the stuffing off one of the shrimp we could see these were not colossal shrimp. These were large at best. But they were not terrible. But Not worth the 30 minute ride. The Saybrook Fish House has been around for decades. I've been there during it's hay day when it was a real treat to when it was not so great. Decided to give it another go last night and was pleasantly surprised. The look and feel the of the restaurant is mostly the same only a bit more updated. The service both at the bar and table was excellent. Very friendly and attentive. The food was good. I had a salmon dish which was good. I don't care for squash-type vegetables but otherwise no problems. It wasn't spectacular and it wasn't bad...it was good. The family style salad is very good. Very fresh with nice dressing choices. Other meals around the table, Poseidon Adventure, Baked Stuffed Shrimp, Salmon special were all good. Portion sizes were decent. Drinks were very good. We shared a dessert, Key Lime pie/cake, which was pretty bad. I have no idea what the cream was on it but it wasn't good. I'm pretty sure I'll come back again but there are still other options in the Farmington Valley that I prefer. read more

My girlfriend and I went to the Saybrook Fish House in Canton, CT this week for the first time. We were a little disappointed with the condition of the outside of the building as we were going to the front door, especially the rotting wood around the windows. Once we got inside we were immediately greeted and seated. Within a minute or two our waitress, Stephanie, was at our table. She was fantastic! She paid very close attention to what we were ordering and made us feel very much at ease with our choices, which were Mussels with Linguini and Stuffed Scrod. Within a reasonable amount of time, we were served bread and a delicious salad with creamy garlic house dressing which in itself is a good reason to return. The temperature of our entrees was just right as was the size of the portions. As for the quality, we thought the meals were prepared perfectly and tasted great. We would order the same things again, but the menu is so big, we probably should try something else which I'm sure would be just as good. Hat's off to the kitchen! Last three times I have been very disappointed with service. Generally food is good but last visit service and food were less than satisfactory. It took 25 minutes to get drinks, had to ask for bread, salad showed up 25 minutes after that and our meals were brought out 45 minutes after that, which were cold. I have given them three times to prove to me maybe the first were flukes but seems to be the norm.....way under staffed to handle a full Saturday night dining room. Last evening a friend and I decided to try the Saybrook Fish House in Canton as we've had dinner several times in Rocky Hill. I think from what I heard last evening a different owner, owns each of these locations, thus the differences we noted. I try to be judicious with eliminating salt and butter, whenever possible. Krista our server was amazing and took my Trout order with great precision. Unfortunately the ticket to the kitchen did not go over correctly and my first meal came out with butter, salt, sauce etc. I quickly sent it back and Krista walked the order directly into the kitchen and the second time around my trout came out perfectly and even without all of the "fats" it was excellent. My friend ordered baked stuffed shrimp. The stuffing had huge pieces of scallops in it and looked unbelievable. She loved her meal. The salad that was served family style was adequate but from my standpoint could have been more plentiful. It had a couple of "off" cherry tomatoes in it which I really think the kitchen should have caught since they were obvious in the dish. The garlic dressing was served on the side along with another dressing. I had a taste of the garlic dressing and it was delicious. I would definitely go back for another try as they really did work hard to prepare my meal exactly as I requested. read more

I have been going here since it opened about 20 years ago; and to other locations in CT. They have all deteriorated to the point that this past Friday will be my last time. It used to be that you got a large family salad for two or more. Now, you get a small family salad; about 1/2 of what you got for two, for three no less. Then there was the main course, it took a while. And, I got clam strips instead of whole clams. My daughters dish was OK, but it was supposed to be spicy. My wife ordered a lobster roll, it was OK. I asked for a baked potato instead of fries, yes, but that'll be an extra $1.50 (fries cost more than baked to make. In the early days, everyone got some fruit and a piece of chocolate at the end of the meal; not now. And, I must say, there was enough bread and butter. Drinks, my wine was bland. My daughter and wife ordered a mixed drink, it was like lemonade with little tequila. Bottom line, this establishment has gone from outstandingly good to terrible in the time it has existed. I hope it ceases to exist and a new FISH House takes its place, one where the owners and employees care enough to create a fine seafood house once again. read more

This place was very dated and had a very strong order of old seafood. Overall the place really needed to be cleaned. The food was just ok but what I saw the bartenders do that night I Would never eat there again. They cleaned glasses and handled raw seafood from the raw bar then went back to handling money and serving drinks /food without washing their hands. I saw this repeatedly. I went here with my wife and two kids on a Friday night about 7:45pm. I ordered the baked stuffed shrimp. I was served 4 tiny shrimp. It was almost all stuffing and I know the have been sitting in a tray for hours. My daughter ordered the king crap legs and they were freezer burned and very tough. They even screwed up a lobster roll. I could not believe they actually served it with part of the bun black. It was a horrible experience. The bill was about $150. read more

Although I found their fried offerings to be less appetizing and somewhat greasy, many of the non-fried entrees are very good. We especially enjoy the fresh family style salad offered with them. The atmosphere is casual and the help very friendly and accommodating. We also find some of their dinner specials to be excellent, but very pricey. Also their regular menu prices tend towards the high side. We recently dined here with another couple and started with stuffed mushroom appetizers, with crab meat you could actually taste. My wife had the baked stuffed shrimp, which she said was good. The other lady and I had my favorite the stuffed sole, which we agreed was excellent. Her husband had the fried clams, which he said were a little chewy but okay. The telling comment however, was during after dinner coffees when he stated he should have heeded my warning. read more

We tried Saybrook Fish House this past Friday night with our two sons. The nautical ambiance is welcoming inside where we sat, and the new outdoor seating area looked very pretty and peaceful. They have a nice selection of seafood dishes - the shrimp scampi over linguini and the lobster were both perfect. The boulliabase was huge and very easy to share. The salad is served family style with lots of veggies and two kinds of house made dressings (both delicious). The chocolate mousse and chocolate cake were large and easy to share between the four of us and both were very good. We will definitely be back - probably to sit outside next time! read more

My mom, brother, and I have been here twice, a few weeks ago and today, and we absolutely love it. The escargot is so smooth- it comes with mushrooms in a buttery sauce, and you don't have to go digging around for the snails in the shells. The fried clams? So light and fluffy. It's amazing. The oysters for an appetizer are so fresh, as they get fresh seafood delivered daily. My mom got the salmon special both times, it has a brown sugar pecan glaze and comes with a side of veg and mashed sweet potato. My brother loves the burgers. And for what I got- the first time I got the petit bouillabaisse and this time the mussels with linguine. The bouillabaisse was delicious with salmon, a white fish, bay clams, shrimp, mussels and clams in the shell. The base was great too, a slightly spicy red sauce. It worked well together. And the mussels with linguine? It's a bowl piled high with Prince Edward Island mussels, and a garlic sauce on the pasta. It worked so well together. My wife and celebrated our wedding anniversary here. I had the whole belly fried clams dinner, and my wife had stuffed schrod. Both meals were excellent. The stuffing had generous portions of scallops and shrimp and was cooked just right. The clams were lightly breaded and fried to golden and served with french fries and cole slaw. The server was friendly and prompt. She noticed we were celebrating an anniversary and offered us free desserts, our pick of any of their regular offerings.
