Came here for the first time with my sister during their social hour. It was packed and clearly a popular spot at all times of the day! The drinks were pretty good and the food was delicious! Our waitress was very friendly. We had a wonderful evening and the ambiance is nice.

We should have written this update much sooner. We really enjoy our visits to Max's. The seafood is consistently a treat, the service is wonderful, and the restaurant's atmosphere is so casually upscale (if that makes any sense). And now they've added Buck-a-Shuck Mondays, which is yet another reason to drop by. Which we cheerfully did, and put away a couple of dozen PEI oysters, fresh, tasty, and nice-sized. And their tangy mignonette is just about the perfect complement. Congratulations to their shucker, who is skilled at this important task. Once sated with oysters, we reveled in an Ahi Tuna poke bowl, scrumptious and with yummy seaweed salad and edamame, and an expertly prepared swordfish, moist and expertly flavored atop romaine. The chef is smart and an artist. We added a side of fresh spinach because it was indeed fresh and lightly flavored with garlic. We do love spinach, and this alone is worth a trip. Our server Matt gave is flawless service; attentive, never rushed, alert to our needs and cheerful. The seating inside is large yet not crowded, and there's a handsome bar. In good weather the front patio is welcome (though the day we were there the weather wasn't encouraging anyone to go outside).

I returned to Max Oyster Bar for the $1.00 raw oysters bar on Mondays only. I also had my favorite point Judith calamari. My mom had there clam chowder and the fresh seard trout with a flavorful salad. The service is impressive and our waiter Matt has been apart of the Max Oyster Bar for many years. He is very curious and attentive to your needs. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. My mom had the festival Gelato she loved it. They also have an awesome music selection. drop into Max Oyster Bar for their delicious raw bar or their delicious fresh seafood dishes. To all my Yelpers let's continue to eat our way through the world. #Foodie4life!!

This place was amazing and top notch from the oysters in the beginning to the hot towels at end, the food and service were wonderful. The ambience is set for dining alone or in a large group. I will come back the next time I'm here visiting a friend. Fantastic service

The food at Max Oyster Bar is always fantastic. I have gone there many times but have not been there in a while. Tonight I decided to order to go and I'm sure I'll enjoy every bite of my seafood paella however the interaction with the host at the front desk was far from stellar. I gave her my name and was told I had to show my order on my phone. No smile, no welcome to MOB. She proceeded to get my order, sat the bag and drink on the lectern and that was that. Not even a "thank you." Again, this is no indictment on the restaurant. Bartenders Jeff and Laura are incredible. Maybe it was just a bad day, but this experience means I won't be going back anytime soon. The paella didn't disappoint!

I went to Max oysters bar a couple days ago for a work dinner. Located in the center of west Hartford. Good ambiance nice dim lightening with light music in the background . It was busy for a Thursday. However our waiters were fabulous . It was raining so I had to start of with the cappuccino which was good , perfect to warm me up . For starters I choose the jumbo crab cake served with side salad which was really good. Crab was declious . If you like crab it's a great , however it is very filling , so make sure you have a good appetite! Next we got the ceased salad , which was okay , fresh veggies , light dressing . Finally the appetizer I got the Ny strip served with mashed potatoes and asparagus! The steak was cooked perfectly ( I asked for medium and I got medium )! You get what you ask for and free flavour is all there . I loved the mashed potatoes and asparagus was cooked perfectly as well . Now the most important part dessert ! If you go to max oysters you have to get the chocolate beignets!! They are sooo good and delicious ! I always get them every time I come !

We're at Max's right now! The Food, Service & Cocktails are Fantastic! We come here fairly often and they are always Great!

We ventured into West Hartford this evening to have dinner at Max's oyster bar. We hadn't been there in quite a while so we thought we would give it a try again. We started with some clam chowder that was just terrific, full of potatoes, onions, and clams, and just the perfect thickness. My wife had never had ceviche before, so we tried the bay scallops ceviche, which I thought was fantastic, but the wife was a little less enthusiastic. Tangy with lime combined with chopped scallops, red onion and veggies it was great if you're a ceviche fan. She had the Norwegian salmon. It was beautifully prepared and if you enjoy salmon, it was right on point. I had the fried fisherman's platter and compared it with my favorite place to go for such a dish which is of course Lenny and Joe's. The fried fisherman's platter came with two pieces of whitefish, three large shrimp and three scallops with fries. The scallops did not appear to be deep-fried, but breaded and lightly fried while the whitefish and shrimp were beautifully fried with a light coating. Overall, the dish was very good. Our server this evening was excellent, stopping by on occasion, but never intrusive and she was a delight who earned a very good tip for her excellent service. Max's Oyster Bar continues to serve high-quality seafood in a lovely atmosphere. We sat outside this evening and enjoyed what was a magnificent late summer evening. Highly recommend

    Do they offer valet parking?

    Not that I'm aware of.

Do they have any vegetarian entree options?

Mostly pescatarian options, but yes they have salads, but limited. If you are vegetarian, there are better places in West Hartford (ex Flora)

The hostess at the front desk seemed visibly annoyed when we checked in. She was impatient, dismissive with her gestures, and even rolled her eyes in front of us. I don't know if it was because we were a family with children or for some other reason, but it made us feel very unwelcome. Honestly, we were close to leaving. Our kids were hungry and tired, so we decided to stay and give the restaurant a chance. Thankfully, the gentleman who served our table completely changed the experience. He was friendly, professional, and patient. He took the time to explain the menu, answer our questions, and recommend some of the restaurant's popular dishes. His attitude made us feel welcomed and appreciated as guests. The food was very good. We enjoyed the seafood paella, grilled octopus, broccolini, cheese plate, and several other tapas. The flavors were great, and the dishes were well prepared. The kitchen and our server delivered a much better experience than the one we received at the front desk. Management should pay attention to how guests are greeted because first impressions matter. The hostess nearly convinced us to leave. The server convinced us to stay.

Food: 3.8/5 Service: 3.4/5…read moreAmbiance: 3.7/5 Value: 3.6/5 The Charles is a nice upscale restaurant on Main Street in Wethersfield which opened in 2020 and quickly made Connecticut magazine's list of best restaurants. It is inside an old house of some sort, so it has a charming ambiance. They have a small parking lot so the spaces are a bit tight. Then, although we were on time for our 8:15pm reservation, we found out that they didn't have a table for us on the main floor, which is bad because my parents have mobility issues and cannot climb stairs. They asked us if we would be ok waiting five or ten minutes. Sure, that was fine we said. The host was very reassuring and he let us know that the corner table near the fireplace was finishing up and he'd get it bussed promptly. So that was good. But after we sat down we experienced service issues. Many items were unavailable. No orrechiete. No crab cakes. No sirloin special. It was weird. We hadn't arrived that late, on a Saturday night, how could so many dishes be sold out/unavailable? We ended up going with the scotch egg $11 and butternut squash arancini balls $12 for appetizers, which were both great. The scotch egg was a decent size and came with a mini salad. The arancini balls were small, but the truffle gorgonzola fontina cheese filling was really nice. Entrees were not bad. My Berkshire pork chop cooked medium was tender enough and had decent flavor. My Dad's veal ribs over mac and cheese were really good. My Mom's wagyu burger was tasty and my sister's salad was satisfactory. However the cost of the additional protein to the salad seems high (Grilled Chicken +14 / Seared Salmon +16/ Grilled Shrimp +21 / Churrasco Steak +24). The drinks were well made, but took a while to get to us. The "Charles... In Charge!" with old forester bourbon, montenegro, spiced cherry bitters, luxardo $15 was a hit. My Dad enjoyed his $17 Manhattan made with Angel's Envy bourbon. My $11 FreeBird mocktail was refreshing. Yet, throughout the night we found it difficult to get our server's attention. All four dishes did not arrive simultaneously. We had to flag someone down for more silverware after the appetizers were cleared. Right at the end when we were ready to pay, she got tied up listening to a couple at a neighboring table tell her a story or something. This must have been quite a yarn because she was totally enrapt and oblivious to our needs. We started wondering whether our table was actually her responsibility or not. Finally she came by and we let her know we were done, no dessert or after dinner drinks, just the check and a few boxes for takeout please. This was a new restaurant that we hadn't tried before, and maybe I took a risk by booking it for my Dad's 89th birthday, which was supposed to be special. Our experience was okay, and maybe we'd go again in the future, but there were too many more ups and downs this evening than I would have liked for a special occasion. I am rounding up to four stars overall, even though on this particular evening I didn't think each individual component met that mark exactly.

This may be, perhaps, the best Happy Hour I have ever seen anywhere. It's EVERY DAY from 3:30-6. The food item options are huge (20-25) plus three dessert choices. There's are also seven quality mixed drinks, three beers and seven wines! OMG! The bartender recognized me! I haven't been here since January 2025 (1 1/3 years ago). She is even knew where I sat! The menu is unchanged except for a few minor things. For my first drink, I'm having the Max Manhattan made with Old Overholt Rye, Cinzano Sweet Vermouth, orange bitters and orange twist. This has a nice garnish and tastes great! For my first food item, I'm getting a Caesar Salad made with romaine lettuce, garlic croutons and Parmesan cheese. The smell of cheese is quite strong! It's a good portion. This tastes good! Crunchy croutons and tasty lettuce. For my next food item, I'm having a Salmon lettuce cup. Nice presentation! It's on a bed of ice and a lemon to sprinkle. This is quite good! Next up, I'm having a Cup of Clam Chowder. I believe these are house-made croutons. This came out quick! It's nice and hot! Tastes great! Well, with a little hot sauce that is...I like the classic music here. For my next drink, I'm having an Old Fashioned made with Old Forester Bourbon, simple syrup and Angostura bitters. Damn! Nice presentation (the Amarena cherry on the wooden stick) and a great tasting drink! The bartenders are good here! Very attentive! For my next food item, I'm having the Steamed Mussels made with soppressata, capers, shellfish stock, spring herb butter and Pernod butter. I love the focaccia! It is heavily buttered. The mussels are real good! For my next food item, I'm having the Scallops A La Plancha made with mustard spatzle, pea puree, asparagus and mushroom cream. This is good. It's heavy due to the pasta. It's like an entree. To wash this all down, I'm getting a bottle of Pellegrino sparking water. I like this stuff! For my next food item, I'm having four (Buck a Shuck) Cherrystone clams and four Oysters of the Day (only $1.95 each). These are good! I love the cocktail and vinaigrette sauces (with the crushed pink peppercorns). Sprinkle that lemon! For my next drink, I'm having a Happy Hemmy made with rum, grapefruit juice, lime and vanilla extract. What a great drink! Very unique taste! This has kick! For my next good item, I'm having the Blackened Fish Taco made with pineapple salsa and aji verde. I love it! This is easy to eat. For my last appetizer, I'm having the Happy Burger made with lettuce, tomato and cheddar cheese. I miss this badly! This is delicious! It's a well-seasoned burger let me tell you! For dessert, I'm having the Creme Brulee. This is the cutest Creme brulee ever! On a Happy Hour menu?! This is a first anywhere! My favorite dessert! This is great! For my final drink, I'm having the Gin Gimlet made with Greylock Gin, simple syrup and lime juice. This is good! It's light so it's easy to drink at the end of my meal.
