Passed this place so many times, finally made it for a Saturday lunch. If you're in the mood for the old Friendly's, you can get fries with every fried fish meal for a comparable price. Unlike Friendly's, features a full bar -- well stocked, from what we could see. Booths are a bit cramped, which makes for excellent eavesdropping. read more

Worst birthday choice ever. I did request something off the menu, but quite simple ( I wanted lobster but no roll, so I asked if they could make it like the scampi, with linguine). They brought a bowl of plain linguine with a few bits of plain lobster and a cup of something that may have been butter but had no flavor at all. That's it. I asked for parmesan cheese and got some, but it didn't help. I ended up throwing the whole mess away. The waitron was super sweet but there's no way I would call this a seafood restaurant. I wish they had just told me no, they couldn't alter the dish like I asked. We spent $75 on lunch and left hungry. read more

We come to eat here all the time in the Rocky Hill location. However the latest experience on Monday afternoon was very disappointing and we may head out to the Canton location next time: 1) We walked in a party of 6 people, and was shown to a table way in the back room which was dark; although the place was not crowded at all with plenty of tables in the front rooms with lots of light. 2) We ordered the raw oysters as one of the appetizers and found a pea crab in one of them alive and moving its legs. We told the waitress and she did not offer to give us another order, and in fact charged us for the three oysters we already ate after sending the rest back. 3) While ordering the Alaskan King Crab Legs which was listed on the menu at market price, the waitress interrupted stating they were very expensive. Well, we were already expecting to pay the cost regardless, as we have done so before here at this restaurant, as well as other seafood restaurants. 4) We ordered the sword fish as I have always done which has been outstanding. However this time I received a very small piece which was very soft and mushy. I tried to eat it, but could not. I asked the waiter for another new dish. She took it back to the kitchen, and came back stating the cook told her that any new piece would be coming from the same cut - and she attempted to hand it back to me!... as if I would have taken it back! right. I told her I would like to order something else which she never offered by the way. Now we paid an substantial amount of money on appetizers, drinks a well as requesting dinner portions during lunch time. To have this kind of service was a HUGE turn off. We are convinced that this waitress and the cook had to be new because we have NEVER had this kind of service the many years we have been coming here! read more

We hadn't eaten out since the beginning of the COVID crisis but we happened to be out shopping not too far from the Saybrook Fish House and decided to go there now that things appear to be safer and we are fully vaccinated. The place was packed--and I DO mean packed! Parking lot was full at dinner time. We didn't feel quite safe enough yet to eat inside but I went in and asked about eating outside on their patio and if we could park in the takeout area. We had driven round and round and there were absolutely no places to park. (I consider this a good sign though.) We had about a ten minute wait but there were chairs conveniently placed for people to wait outside. Weather was gorgeous, people were happily chatting. We both ordered our favorite, fish and chips and my husband ordered a craft beer. Believe it or not, we are fussy about fish and chips. It has to taste fresh and the batter has to be right and not greasy either. Turned out to be perfect just like it used to be. My husband greatly enjoyed the beer and even though he had been in a grumpy mood from shopping, he soon became more like his old self again. For dessert we split a slice of key lime pie--just could not resist. Everything was wonderful--the nautical decor on the patio, the service, the food. Highly recommended. read more

As we entered, we were greeted by a sign announcing Saybrook Fish House is no longer taking Groupons and coupons. Thank goodness we weren't industrious enough to purchase the Groupon! The initial interior was a little dark, but with the blue wood and decor it felt like we could be on a ship, or at least near the coast. The table was a little small - we had a hard time fitting the plates, especially with appetizers. The New England Clam Chowder is good for the area, although I wish it had a little more clam. It tasted homemade, when in other restaurants it screams canned. The Clams Fish House was delicious; the bacon, clam, and sauce really complimented each other well. The salad is shared amongst the table, and has everything you could want or need - mushrooms, carrots, cheese, lettuce, cucumbers, etc. Okay, maybe everything I could want or need, and their house garlic dressing was really creamy without an overpowering garlic taste. For the main course, the Stuffed Scrod, I was afraid there would be A shrimp, A scallop (as described in the menu) but I found multiple shrimps and scallops, and the vegetables and quinoa complimented it well. Everything was well seasoned and at good temperature. The waitress was very friendly and kept a steady flow of drinks for hydration, although a little too eager sometimes to clear our dishes from the table. It wasn't as though closing was imminent or there was a wait list - most of the tables were empty. Went out to dinner here at Saybrook Fish House last week and as usual, everything was delicious! We all opted for our favorite - the Baked Stuffed Shrimp (except for my grandson, who had the children's portion of spaghetti). It was beautiful outside, so we sat on the patio and enjoyed the nice evening, I loved how all the tables outside were spaced far apart, which made me feel safe in this COVID world. The portions were large, so I got to bring some home for a second dinner the next night! The servers were attentive and pleasant and delivered our food quickly. First off I want to say the service was excellent and the manager kept making sure we were happy. It was my daughter's birthday dinner out and there were 8 of us. The food was so so. A cup of claim chowder had 0 claims in it and was over powered with onion. Mozz sticks were huge and very overly breaded- not so good. Boneless Chicken wings were yummy. That was the tables favorite out of all the food. Crab cakes were full of sand so I don't know how that could be. My biggest disappointment was the claim chowder. Being from Cape Cod it's so hard to find good chowder in this area so that's why I'm giving it 3 stars. And you'd think they'd have specials at dinner but nope and a seafood restaurant without swordfish or whole lobsters ? Picked up takeout since I was in the area we ordered the stuffed scrod, stuffed shrimp, seafood chowder and a clam chowder. Both soups were very good with lots of seafood in them. The seafood stuffing they make is so good it has scallops, shrimp, nice and nice chunks of celery in it. My meal came with 6 really large shrimp which I dipped in butter and devoured in no time. My wife really enjoyed the stuffed scrod and the rice/veggies it came with. A salad came with our meals which was also very good with plenty of fresh veggies on top, and the house dressing is so delicious I wish they would sell me a bottle. We dined here on Father's Day, and it was packed! Considering that, we were seated quickly without reservations and our server was very competent. The last time here, I ordered Calamari which came with a sauce so HOT I couldn't eat it! This time, the sauce was just right! Crispy Calamari with great marinara! The service was sub par. The waitress couldn't be bothered with anything we asked for. She didn't listen to anything we had to say and my husband and myself are not picky by any means. Visited two weeks ago and food was phenomenal! I actually just created my Yelp account to review this place and one other because my time here was THAT good! Anyways, my wife and I shared the calamari. This was our first time trying this so we weren't sure what to expect but it was delicious! Our oldest daughter tried it and loved it as well which is crazy because she is such a picky eater. We also had the fish and chips and they were great! Went on a Thursday evening to celebrate my brothers birthday. We did not have reservations, but we were seated quickly. Our server came right over and was attentive the whole evening. The average score posted of 3.5 is more accurate then 4 but you can only score a 3 or 4 so we gave them a 4 as the food scores in at a solid 4! The stuffing for their shrimp or lobster is second to none and an absolute must! Appetizers are good, except for the shrimp cocktail (stay away), and as we like the muscles and escargot we don't order anymore because they don't offer Italian bread or even a hard roll to dunk in the sauce, they serve a soft dinner roll not adequate for dunking. Dinner specials are always well thought out, fresh and tasty, no issues there. Drinks are so so and depends on bar tender? We don't typically order dessert so can't comment. Service is also so so and depends on server, we had a bad experience sitting in the bar area whereas we didn't see a server for twenty minutes, noticing a couple that came in after us was quickly taken care of by the bartender and actually got their drinks and appetizers before we got to order.....when we did get our server, she apologized saying there was a mix, curious why the bartender serving the couple behind us didn't notice and try to accommodate us, especially since we kept making eye contact? Saybrook isn't my favourite of seafood restaurants in the New England area, but i don't think it deserves the low rating shown here. We came and were seated immediately, had a very pleasant waitress and everything we ordered came out hot, presented nicely and tasty. The reason I cant give a higher star rating is that for what we got, it was rather pricey. I ordered two oysters from the raw bar and they were delicious, but ridiculously small. The cup of clam chowder was rich and fantastic, but was maybe the size of two shot glasses. And when I specifically asked how many scallops came with the Bacon Wrapped Scallops appetizer (I ordered it as my entree) and was told 6, to have only four medium sized ones appear was highly disappointing. The one awesome thing was this giant bowl of chopped salad that was served family style with a delicious creamy garlic dressing. honestly the high point of the meal! We absolutely love it here. I've noticed that the reviews are hit or miss - I really think this place is about what you order. We got to the restaurant about 715 on Wednesday. We chose to sit on the patio and I am so glad we did! It is one of the most beautiful patios we have ever dined in. Gorgeous, breezy night. Service was great and efficient. The salad is always where it's at here! Fresh and loaded with goodies. The dressings are to die for. The bread basket is always fresh and a welcome sight when you're hungry! Man-child got one of the specials. It was Cod stuffed with bacon, cheddar, scallions and a couple other things. Came on a bed of couscous and it looked great. He said it was one of the best seafood dishes he has had. I stuck with one of my favorites. The stuffed sole. Yum! One of the reasons why I love Saybrook Fish is because of their seafood stuffing. It's very little filler and almost all seafood. There was no exception with this serving either. It was Sole but completely stuffed with shrimp and huge scallops. So so so good. Pay attention to the specials - they really are great. They have an excellent assortment of beers on tap and our waitress had no problem rattling off about 30 of them. This just so happens to be my favorite location out of all the Saybrooks that are in CT. The location is easily accessible but quiet. Patio is beautiful and the food/service is pretty good. As a note: Yes, it isn't fancy. It makes me wonder how many people have been in a TRUE fish house. This is it. The inside needs to be updated but that is part of the CHARM. I urge you to visit the Cape, Jersey, Maryland, any seaside town on the east coast. I spent my childhood growing up next to the ocean and worn walls and updating means they've been there awhile. That's a good thing. If you want pretentious, go visit Max Fish. You won't find that here. read more

But what it does have is fresh, well made ingredients and if you are looking for a traditional fish house restaurant with traditional dishes, this is a good option. Had lunch there yesterday and was impressed with the tasty fresh garden salad to start out, fresh warm bread and a baked scallop entre that was quite nice. What a wonderful overall experience! We were initially greeted by two very inviting gentlemen. We were immediately brought to our table. The gentleman took the time to explain the menu on the restaurant in the different specials be as it was our first experience here. The restaurant has a very nice decor. Warm and comfortable, once again a very relaxing overall enjoyable experience. The menu selection of seafood entrees appetizers and others. We love the Saybrook fish house and maybe tonight was a new cook but not good. Started with N. E. Clam chowder. Lots of big potatoes basically no clams. They were shredded into strips and the broth was watered down. Did not eat it. We ordered baked stuffed shrimp They were just ok . Dry and too blackened on top. Salad was fir buy bread consisted of dinner rolls that were at least 3. Days old. By far not our usual. Delicious meal.
