On the drive out, we kept looking around and joking, "Are we actually about to go eat at someone's farmhouse?" But once we arrived, we were so glad we made the trip. The place is clean, cute, cozy, and has that genuine small-town Texas feel you just can't manufacture. Our boys got the chicken strips, my husband had the Philly cheesesteak, and I ordered the chicken-fried steak. Everything was delicious! They also have board games available to play while you wait, which was such a cute touch. We ended up playing Candy Land with the boys while waiting for our food, and honestly, that made the experience even more memorable. One thing worth mentioning: this is a mom-and-pop shop, not a big chain restaurant. Come with a little patience and enjoy the experience. The staff is taking care of everyone, the food is being made with care, and good food is worth waiting for. We were a little sad that we didn't get to try more of the sweet treats because several had already sold out--which, considering how good the ones we did get were, makes perfect sense. In fact, the desserts were apparently so good that we completely forgot we were supposed to take pictures before we ate them. We will DEFINITELY be back, and next time we're coming for breakfast! And our chips for our spinach and artichoke dip were burnt! The kids food turned out ok, they said they didn't taste anything in the Mac and cheese so it was ok to sprinkle a dash of salt on there. Our server Christina was helpful and more than apologetic, and was able to have them remake my hamburger steak, she said something looked off about the gravy, we both agreed and it looks light and like the gravy for the country fried steak... she tried to compensate for the food quality with a sweets item- we chose a slice of chocolate cake which was such a nice gesture. I've had the steak medallion appetizer. The braised ribs are hit or miss- they can sometimes taste like they've been sitting in the fridge. I got the 2 meat combo plate with chicken and garlic pork sausage. I also got the creamed corn and potato salad on the side. Everything was good. The sausage and corn were great. In hindsight I wish I had ordered chicken breast - it's a just me thing, but brown chicken meat is tasting and smelling a lot like turkey to me lately which isn't great because of a bad turkey experience. (Again just me!!) I also would have ordered double creamed corn! It was delish! I also feel like I need raw onions and pickles forever with BBQ now. New obsession. Unfortunately, this was our first visit, and will also be our last. My mom ordered the chicken, my sister had the chili, and I went all in with the brisket, ribs, creamed corn, coleslaw, and buttermilk pie. The brisket was, without question, the driest brisket I've ever had. It was so dry that I had to take a drink after nearly every bite just to get it down. The ribs weren't much better, equally dry and lacking seasoning. The creamed corn had a strange texture and flavor that neither of us enjoyed, and the coleslaw was just average. In the end, all of my meal, plus half of my mom's chicken, went home for the dogs. The one bright spot was the buttermilk pie. It was surprisingly good and had just the right amount of sweetness. To be fair, the staff was very friendly, and the restaurant and bathrooms were clean. They deserve five stars for hospitality and cleanliness. Unfortunately, the food itself was closer to one star, and when you're visiting a BBQ restaurant, the food matters most. What made this even more disappointing was that we passed by the day before and saw what looked like the entire Elgin police department parked there. We figured it must be fantastic. They were very busy, even at 3 pm on a Sunday. You can choose your spiciness level. Regular, medium, spicy and "xxx." We tried a medium and a spicy. I am not even curious about the xxx because the spicy (and even the medium) were plenty hot for us! The place has a nice interior. It's the former (and beloved) Cedar's restaurant. And they had some nice music playing. And it's counter service only but they all seemed very nice. We ordered 2 blue crabs, a pound of snow crabs, 6 red potatoes, corn on the cob and mushrooms. That was plenty for the two of us. Blue crabs are far cheaper, and these were fine, but those snow crab legs were sooo goood! They steam or boil the crab, place it in a plastic bag, add any veggies you ordered, then ladel in whatever sauce you ordered and toss to coat. So... yeah... everything's real messy! They don't give you a mallet, but you don't need one. The blue crab is already in two halves with the main shell removed. And they don't provide a bib (though we didn't spill anything on our clothes). And they didn't even offer wet wipes, just a large dispenser of napkins. But it worked for us. You just wash up after in the restroom. Of course crab needs beer and they had a good IPA among other things. We will return to work through the menu. We haven't had dungeness crab in awhile. And who doesn't like muscles? My only issue here is, I have no idea how many calories I'm eating. They lay down the butcher paper and you dump out your bag of seafood and it's all in a pool of butter, but it's tossed while it's in the shell so I don't know how much of the gets to the meat. But it must be a lot, because the meat has so much flavor! So, I'm planning a light breakfast, a return to Dockside for lunch, and a healthy salad for dinner. Sounds good to me!
