    The dry brisket :T
    Mike K.

2 out of 5. Living in Austin, it's hard to get out of the city, but driving out to Elgin for a day for this place was not worth the drive, and the dry brisket was something I was hoping we wouldn't experience. ---- Pros: - Plenty of parking - Plenty of menu items that you need/want - Spacious inside - Standard pricing against competition Side Notes: - Open daily from 10 - 8 PM - No reservations; first-come/first-served - Take out/delivery What We Got: - Brisket - Pork garlic sausge - Smoked St. Louis Pork Ribs - Cream corn - Potato salad - Banana pudding ---- Design/Space: It's spacious, restrooms were a bit dirty (came on a Saturday, around 5 PM), and it wasn't busy at all. The way into the space wasn't confusing at all on how to order, so it's designed well, except the extra pickles and sauces are closer to the exit area, versus right after you pick up your food. A suggestion would be to move it closer to when you get your food, but it still works. Services/Staff: Could be better in terms of customer service. Felt like maybe they had a bad day, but weren't cheerful at all, and when I compare it to Terry Blacks or Franklin's BBQ in Austin, you can sense a love for what they do. Food/Drinks: The only thing that we thought was a 3 out of 5 was the banana pudding. Everything else (except sausage) was a 1 out of 5. Here's why: the brisket was extremely dry. It was hardly edible, even after drenching it in the sauce. The ribs were also dry and just felt like they were sitting out for a long time. The sausage was a 2 out of 5, as it was too greasy and lacked that fresh flavor. Potato salad was average, and nothing that made me fall in love with it. Cream corn tasted like the corn was not fresh. I read the previous reviews, but I wanted to go and find out how it was personally. It's disappointing because I love Meyer's sausage when I would buy it from HEB, cook it at home, and thought the experience would be the same or better at a full restaurant. The brisket is seriously disappointing; it was extremely dry. Opportunities to Improve: A couple of suggestions. One, ensure that the staff loves what they do. We just didn't feel the love, comparing it to others that we love going to. Secondly, focus on the quality of the food. The standards are something I've grown to love at Meyers, but it was disappointing. ---- Summary: I hope they can address the issues, and if I see reviews pick up, we will definitely stop by and give it a second chance. However, with choices as a consumer, we might not stop by until things improve.

Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse BBQ opened in 1998, but the history of the Meyer family and meat processing in Elgin, TX goes back to the 1930's. My nephew and I had the chance to stop in soon after it opened at 10 am on a Friday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It has a very large dining area, fully air conditioned with different separate areas.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is a small counter selling Meyer's sausages and souvenirs. The main ordering area has the meats ready to carve once ordered. The friendly cashier told us a little about the choices, and we decided to sample. You pay upfront, and then wait a little bit while the meat is carved and sides are put into cups. We got the two meat plate for $15.75, up charging to the brisket for additional $2.50 (no choice in getting either moist or lean...they gave us lean), and having the beef garlic sausage as the other choice. Sides were mashed potatoes and pinto beans. It all came on a styrofoam plate pretty quick. There are self serve stations with huge amount of dill pickle spears, white onions, pickle slices, ketchup and cheddar cheese. Pickles and onions are a great addition to any rich and fatty meats, and these were cold and crispy. I thought the food was just OK, with my favorite being the sausage and the crisp pickles. The sausage was flavorful, coarsely ground the way I like it, and definitely have a nice snap when you break through the casing. The brisket was OK, definitely had the smoke ring and it looks beautiful as it was being carved, but pretty plain when eaten as part of the two meat plate, and a bit dry. Reminded me of what you can get at a chain like Dickey's (where the brisket is reused from previous day if necessary), but maybe a bit even lower...definitely not as good as what you can get at a chain like Rudy's. Perhaps it would be better in a sandwich, stacked a bit higher. The pinto beans was enjoyed and the mashed potatoes were very simple, just potato with no cream/milk or cheese mixed in. All in all, the prices are very reasonable. You self-bus, and we were in/out really quick, which we appreciated, giving us enough time to hit the next BBQ place.

There is no shortage for good barbecue in Elgin, Texas. Today I wandered into the Wonderland of smoke meat. The Cowabunga sandwich with brisket, beef sausage, and grilled onions was one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. Follow that with fresh tea and banana pudding and This Texas girls heart was singing. This family owned business has been smoking its meat for generations. They even have a butcher shop that you can take some of their wonderful meats home or indulge in another Texas tradition with bluebell ice cream. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Family friendly staff and a wonderful open dining room with family and community pictures posted throughout[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Don't miss this next time you're near Elgin.

I read through all the post Covid reviews before coming here. Many yelpers complained about the consistency of the barbecue. There's also that comparison to Southside bbq less than a mile away on the same side of the road. Ironically, as of this writing, both establishments share a cumulative 3 1/2 star rating. I also noticed most reviewers left no pictures, there's 10 from me. The two of us got here at the height of Friday lunch hour and there were very few patrons inside and no line. I got the three meat plate and my friend got the two meat. They do not serve baby back ribs here, St. Louis style only. The first thing I noticed about the brisket was a barely discernible smoke ring and the sausage was overly greasy and flavorless. The brisket was a little on the dry side as were the ribs. The meat did not fall off the rib bone, you actually had to chew it off. They do have three choices of barbecue sauce which are pretty decent and come in handy if your brisket is not moist like mine was. The three meat plate is $20 and they charge an additional $2.50 if you want brisket. I do have to admit the four sides we had were actually pretty good. The chicken was tender and good, but not very smoky as was the pulled pork. Some other mentionables about the place, they do have a good fixens bar, but no salad bar. They do have some commercial bottled beer in the cooler and they serve bluebell ice cream. You can also get prepacked sausages to go along with their signature barbecue sauces. At one end of the building is a private room for parties up to 79 people. When it's time to cash out with your card, that tip screen will be waiting starting at 5%. The barbecue here is good, but for the money I was kind of expecting more. I'll stick to Southside. ***1/2 overall.

Elgin sausage is famous, but I thought that I'd go out to Elgin for some. Meyer's situated right on 290 - blink, and you'll miss it, like I did (the Waze girl must've fallen asleep). I turned around and arrived just a couple minutes after opening, on a Sunday morning. The gal greeting me behind the counter seemed like she was happy to be there, which is always a good sign. I ordered two types of sausage with two sides (potato salad and cole slaw, of course). The sausage was so delicious that it tasted better without the excellent BBQ sauce. The sides were also really good - a large scoop of either, which was sufficient. The pickles tasted odd to me, but I am used to pickles being made differently, I suppose. Freshly-cut onions. The sausage was at center stage, though, and sold the show. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Since I was the only dine-in customer (apart from a few takeout orders being picked up), almost to be expected on a Sunday morning, I can't attest to the ambiance except to say that the decor and furnishings were about what one could expect from a family-style Texas BBQ restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also sell meats that you can cook for yourself, and have to-go package specials, as well. The food and the establishment were just as I'd hoped. I look forward to going back and trying other items on the menu.

First timer. Stopped in for some beef sausage which I generally buy from Southside Smokehouse which is just down the street. The sausage had a great flavor. Very comparable to Southside. The cashier was very friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor is very country which it should be !!!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Plenty to share!

They have really great smoked chicken. So tasty! Maybe the best anywhere. Their pork-n-garlic sausages are very nice. And we love all their side dishes and their cobbler. BBQ is subjective, and we already have our favorite places for brisket, beef sausage and bbq sauce. Myers won't change that for us. But it's a great bbq restaurant, with lots of room, nice decor, bottled beer, fair prices, friendly staff, and a room in the back for large parties.

Brisket, chicken, and ribs were all dry and tough. Worst that I have had in years! However, the potato salad and slaw were both excellent!

Meat--The meat was on the dry side, but not too dry. The meat had a LOT of fat on it to be so dry. Still very good though, great flavor and great crust. Very tasty. Sauce-very good. Balanced sweet and tangy, not on the sweet side, really likes it. Sides-I got green beans, they were not from a can, field fresh, definitely not overcooked, might could use a little more cooking. Nicely seasoned but could use a little salt. I also got Mac n cheese and it was good, I've had better but it was a nice flavor and I got a piece of toasty crust which I like and it was good. Dessert- I got peach Cobbler. I didn't like the crust. It's a cake-like crust and I prefer the pie like crust. The peaches were fresh and not from a can, not overly sweet, good flavor, but again, no cake for me. They don't have Coke Zero only Diet Coke. I did go inside to use the restroom. I like a bbq place to smell like a bbq place. This one had a stale restaurant stay.
