Value: Competitive prices and intelligent design for the majority of the furniture items. Things get a bit annoying after you order, because of the poor follow up. It takes longtime to get an item from overseas, and even tough there is a promise at ordering that you would be informed about each stage of the delivery, that only happens when you call the store. Once my item was ready for delivery, it came wrapped in a clear plastic, (no box, provided it comes overseas and I wonder how it made it thrugh ships), with no label, in the wrong color. Noticing this, I first told the delivery team, who insured me that the color looked different because the showroom had different lighting. Fair enough, but when you order a white thing, getting black is not about lighting. The clear plastic wrap did not have any label to be presented to me. When I called the store, the "solutions" were not at the table - I got offered to go get the samples and take hole (to what with them, not sure). When I asked if anyone can come with the samples and compare the color, they explained that they are short staffed and no one drives to work (?), interesting, where is the manager, really? So, still waiting for a solution as to how to get the item I ordered, paid for, and waited for over 4 moths just to find out that what they delivered is not what I ordered. Their "make believe" is falling apart, this is not how you attract customers, in fact, the whole way this order has been handled, is not acceptable. read more

Terrible service. Made no effort. Didnt ask what we were looking for. When we found one we liked we asked about other colours and how long to get, 4-6 months! Didnt check the stock, didn't ask for any details. We got home and they have 3 in a colour we like in stock! Phoned a different branch. Asked about time and delivery. Said they would check. Hours later nothing. Phoned back and told it could take a few days! Handed a potential sale and does nothing to give any confidence or set any expectations. Unfortunately, we purchased a sofa that has had various issues. Both the right and left arms have depressions, which were there after about 3 months of use. We have used this sofa as we have any other sofa in our lives, and do not lean heavily on the arms. The issue is with the manufacturing the arms: wood goes across the arm up until the point where the depression occurs on each side (i.e. the wood doesn't go all across the arms of the sofa). There are other issues with the couch, such as the cushions sliding extensively after sitting for five minutes. Overall, this couch was not of a good enough quality. More disappointing was the response from Scan Designs. We were told that we could get a quote for repair for what is clearly a manufacturing issue. The manager I wrote to said that the floor models were constructed properly, so ours must be too, i.e. the blame was shifted on to us. Overall, the manager's approach to a customer was dismissive and a touch unprofessional (i.e suggesting we pay more for a product that was not well constructed). I wrote back explaining that, no, we did not break any wood in the arms and did not think it fair to pay for a repair. I then explained that I found the couch breaking down the way it has, within 1.5 years of purchase, to be quite wasteful. It has been over a week and Scan Designs has not responded. Overall, I am a bit disappointed with the company's response and approach. No, I don't want free things and I understand that these are difficult times for businesses, who must be extra conscious about profit margins, but I would also like to be believed when I am a customer. Furniture is nice but customer care is terrible. Be prepared to wait for months and months to receive their furniture with no follow up calls or communication to keep you in the loop. They will sell you their products then closer to the delivery date, phone you and say they don't have the product in stock and now making you wait months to get it into your home. There are a lot of furniture stores in this neighbourhood, but Scandesigns stands out not only for the clean, simple look of its furniture, but also the service. First, because there are no salespeople stalking you through the showroom as you look around. The showroom itself is spacious and airy, unlike the typical crammed-to-the-rafters furniture stores we also visited in the vicinity. And second, if you do ask for help, they're very professional and friendly. Even if they don't exactly work there - Scandesigns shares a space with Couch Potato and Martha Stewart for Scandesigns and each has different staff. But when we asked someone at the Couch Potato desk (it's closest to the front entrance) about a bed we liked in the Scandesigns showroom, she told us she didn't work for them and then personally took us over to someone who did. They carry furniture at a range of price points, so it's comfortable for those taking their baby steps into the world of real furniture for grown-ups as well as those who are looking for a taste of high-end, modern pieces. And what really sold me was the fact that delivery AND assembly was $65. I do live relatively close by, but the other big-name Scandinavian place across the road charges $69 for delivery for stuff I'd have to then have to assemble myself. A week later as arranged, their big truck rolled up to my building with my new bed, and in about a half hour, two strapping lads had neatly assembled it. And I couldn't be happier to finally have a big beautiful bed that DOESN'T have stupid stapled-together pine slats that cave in the second you roll over wrong. They have lots of warehouse sized furniture stores along this strip and definitely a good place to come if you are needing furniture. We've been to Scandesign on few occasions for items/furniture for our house. They have a huge showroom with stressfree lounge chairs, couches, bed frames and other furniture you may need around the house. I am trying to get away from Ikea furniture and this place seems like a good alternative as some of the furniture are decently priced. But most of the items they carry are definitely on the higher end side but they seem like good quality so explains the pricing. Their shipping seemed more reasonable compared to other furniture stores as it included delivery and assembly. read more

Bought a couch and dining room table two years ago and got a good deal. However, had a disappointing experience with the sectional couch. We had been searching for a year and asked for top grain leather. Had success at Ashley furniture but they didn't have the design we wanted. At Scan design, he told us the couch was top grain leather but the cat scratched and punctured it after a week. I complained and the Manager only offered me the contact of a repair person. I also told her there was nothing proving the type of material where as the Ashley couch had a tag and she said that's not required in Canada. When I told her my conversation with the sales person she made me sound like a liar and said she wasn't there. A year later, I ran my hand over chaise and felt bump. Upon examination, looks like a good patch job. I feel ripped off. I recommend everyone read the fine print and examine their product same day of purchase. Bad customer service. read more

On our last visit, I noticed my cell phone missing and several staff members were patient and understanding while we searched. I bought a set of dining chairs about 7 years ago. I thought they were leather. Turned out they were faux leather and completely disintegrated at the seems and completely cracked at the seat. I also bought swivel stools that I thought were leather. They were polypropylene based and completely peeled off down to the mesh underneath. If you want chairs for a long time, stay away from faux-leather. I spoke to an upholstery company which confirmed the above info and is unable to recover my chairs. I have a bit of a weird confession to make; I LOVE browsing furniture stores. If I'm having a bad day, a wander around a room full of lovely things is enough to leave me cheered and inspired. So what makes Scan Designs my favourite place to shop? So many things! First off, I can actually just go in to have a look around. The salespeople there don't hover and come running to tell me what sort of "special deals" they can give me every time I pause to look at an item. Secondly, the salespeople really seem to know their stuff and to actually have a genuine interest in making sure that their customers get the right products. I was recently trying out some recliners and one of the salespeople came over and pointed out that I might be happier in a slightly smaller version of the chair because I was sitting in the "super tall" people model. Being able to get a chair that fits my short legs? OK! Thirdly, there's a really solid variety of things here. They have some really affordable pieces and they also have some luxury items. I feel like almost everyone could find somethign that they would like here. Fourth, their customer service is really good. I wound up buying the short person chair that I'd been shown and I wanted it in a colour that they didn't have. The salesperson explained to me that there was an order for that colour and that it would be arriving in about three months. The order did get delayed by a couple of weeks and the salesperson called to let me know about it and called again to schedule delivery as soon as it arrived. The delivery guys were really organized and very nice too. I am extremely happy with everything and will definitely be returning soon! read more

Be careful! There is a 48 hour window after you purchase anything. After the 48 hours you'll be charged a 20% restocking fee should you decide that you don't want it. I purchased thousands of dollars of furniture 4 days ago and discovered that the pieces would not work. I was told that there is a 20% restocking fee and that I basically have to buy my furniture there in order to not be charged $1000 restocking. They did not inform me of this at the time of purchase. Prices are decent, quality is okay and sales people are helpful but this particular issue has completely turned me off of this company. read more

I purchased a sectional couch there in Sept '09. Few months ago I noticed that it started fading from black to orangey-rusty-brown. I called Scandesigns and asked what they can do for me at this point. One of their guys came over to my place to take a look and basically told me that their warranty only covers a year and that there was nothing they could do at this point. He did admit "it was probably the dye in the fabric". OK so far. The conversation turned progressively unprofessional when all of a sudden he started blaming the fading on my cat (?). After I told him that I want to get rid of this couch he told me it still looked OK, and that I could probably put it on Craigslist and get some money for it. Then he asked "what do you want us to do?" I said that I want some kind of retribution back. The only thing he offered was a discount (didn't say what kind) on my next purchase. Next, when I told him that given the way I have been treated, I don't want to buy anything there, he said that this is one of their lower prices pieces and that more expensive pieces are better quality. I am not going to add any more detail at this point, but it is clear to me that this place is after one purchase, and once you paid them, they don't care what happens to you next. Ironically, none of the couches I have ever had faded. My last couch from ..gasp IKEA, didn't fade after 5 years in direct sunlight! They also basically told me that I bought their cheap junk and so bad so sad. By the way the couch cost me $1500, while not top price, it is hardly cheap. Bottom line, if you do like their stuff, research the manufacturer prior to purchasing, because once you made the purchase and something goes wrong, you are on your own and out of money you just spent. From the company's response below it is evident that they must think that if they repeat something several times, it will make it true. If your couch changes color after a year and a half and the company you bought that from is not willing to do anything for you, it means that the company does NOT stand behind their product. Plain and simple. Their actions speak for themselves. ADDED on July 2015 After our move the sectional broke into two pieces, still usable though BUT it has revealed itself to not have the hardwood frame like we were originally told!!!! I have bought dining chairs, TV stand and a desk from them.Well, they may not be the best quality ,but I did not pay much for them either. I like the sales people, very friendly and some actually spend time helping you with the design . Every thing I bought there,were available at the warehouse,so I can't comment on the way they handle orders ,like other reviewers. I picked up a piece at their warehouse which was very close to their store . They would open the box in front of you, so you can check every thing before they put it in your car and the first one we checked was not perfect, so they had to go and bring another one.Rest of furniture,were delivered to our house by two nice, friendly delivery guys. read more

It is unfortunate to resort to writing a bad review, but after emails and telephone calls to the company with no resolution to the issue, here we are... My mother purchased a dining room table, 6 chairs and a buffet from the Coquitlam store 6 years ago for her condo. This set has been used less than 20 times (allowing for a family gathering three times per year.) I was askance to see the damage along the side of each chair and encouraged her to contact the store and see what could be done. Well, according to Scan Design's repairman NOTHING can be done. This individual came to her home and she was told that "when you sit on the chairs, it causes the coating to flake off along the sides of the chairs". He then demonstrated by pressing his hand on the seat and the resulting bulge on the side flaked off more of the leather coating. He said it was a flaw of the design. Seriously?? When one spends several thousand dollars to purchase a dining room set, is it not with the intention to SIT on the chairs? We know that the thread of emails was forwarded to the "Muse & Merchant" of Scan Design, Colin Knudsen, but he has yet to reach out and offer any explanation or remedy to the issue. Maybe he's still musing about what could possibly be done? How many more chairs are out there that have resulted in the same fate? Where is their Quality Control?? All that we can seem to find is a like lack of control and very poor customer relations. I will never recommend, nor will I ever purchase any items from Scan Design again as it is evident that they do not back up their products when there are "design flaws". Do yourself a favour and buy from a quality store that stands behind their products and will work to rectify an issue rather than sully their reputation. There are many reputable stores to select from...give this one a wide berth! Ironically the next morning after the repairman's visit my mother received a telephone call from an overseas source offering to mail her a leather "paint" to coat her chairs. She could pay $45 plus shipping and handling but there was no guarantee that it would work. (This person also stated that they were NOT representing Scan Design.) Wow! Really people? Horrible customer service. I ordered and paid for two bar stools and a dining room table, and I asked them if they could hold them for a couple months. I was told that they could hold it for as long as I needed. When I called to get my bar stools delivered, they informed me that they couldn't fine them in the warehouse, and they'd have to call me back. When they called me back they informed me that they sold my bar stools and they couldn't replace them for three months. The manager acted like it was no big deal, and that I was ruining her day for being annoyed. I asked if they sold my dining table as well. Luckily, they did not. When I went to pick up my dining table, it took them two hours to find it (even though I called them the previous day to tell them that I would be by to pick it up), and they tried to charge me for delivery. I've wasted too much of my time with these people, and they don't even care that they're providing bad customer service. It must be nice to have enough job security that you can treat your customers like crap. read more

After searching several furniture stores for weeks for the style of sectional that had in mind we came across ScanDesigns and were overwhelmed with the selection at the Coquitlam location. The store is HUGE with two floors and many different styles to choose from and after turning a corner the couch of our dreams stared us in the face. The sales person was very helpful and at the same time not pushy. We arranged for delivery and it was delivered on the promised date and was moved into our house by professional mannered people. We ordered a bed in early Aug. which we were told it will take 6-8 weeks for delivery, we were thinking between this bed and another floor model which we could get right away. I was really disappointed by the service & the staff attitude during my visit. I had paid for a coffee table and was told to pick it up in few wks at their warehouse. Well we waited an hour when we went to pick it up because the staff could not locate the product. We went back to the store and were told there is none in stock but we can take the floor model @ full price. We pointed out since its out of box, there should be a reduction but the manager said nope. I asked for an option of getting another table but were told it will take a month. I have a love/hate relationship with Scandesigns. LOVE the furniture. Service is fine. Hate just about everything else. But we keep going back. That's how much we love the stuff. When we were buying dining room chairs we kept being told they had only 1 or 3 of the one we liked. Who needs 3 dining room chairs? Our entertainment unit was a b***ch to put together, drilling required and a few screws that were squashed rather than pointy. Technically not Scandesigns fault, but it speaks to their choice of product. And everything really cool seems to take 6 months to get in since they need to fill up a ship in Norway before it will get sent. But great furniture at not too outrageous a price. read more

We bought 6 white leather chairs in August of this year and have hardly used them, as they are in our formal dining room. They are only 4 months old and are showing discolouration and staining. When we spoke with the manager, Casper, he said that white leather chairs will always stain from jeans, and he could do nothing because we declined the stain protection plan. When we bought the chairs, we were never told that "white leather chairs will stain from jeans". We were offered the stain protection plan as insurance "in case" of staining. We were not told that staining was something that was going to happen. We also have discolouration on the back of the chairs. We only use proper leather conditioner and cleaner to clean the chairs, yet Casper, the manager, insists we have been using some cleaning product that has discoloured the chairs. We have over $15,000 of ScanDesign furniture in our house, and we have not had any issues with this company before. Yet, Casper, will not stand by the product nor will he admit that they did not tell us that jeans will stain the chairs all the time. They need to make their customers clearly aware that the leather used in some of their products "will stain 100% of the time". This way people will avoid paying thousands of dollars for them. The protection plan is also contracted out to a third party who determines if the chairs can be cleaned or need to be repaired/replaced. The company won't give you new chairs or your money back. So even if you buy the plan, you will be at the mercy of a third party to see when your chairs will be repaired or replaced. Casper has shown no desire to listen to our complaint, he has only thrown the responsibility back on us. This is not a way to treat your loyal customers. I then spoke with Gurt (not sure if spelling is correct), who is Casper's boss, and was told they would not take any responsibility for the issue and that it was the leather conditioner and cleaner that we used that caused the discolouration. During my call with Gurt, I found him to be very rude as he wouldn't listen and continued to interrupt me throughout the call. When I mentioned that I would post reviews about his store he said his lawyers would "sue me so bad". Typical arrogant response. I have researched this company and other people have had similarly unsatisfactory dealings with the customer service here. My wife and I will not be shopping here ever again and we will ensure that as many people know the issues we have had. read more

My boyfriend and I purchased the J215 fabric sectional from Scan Designs in summer of 2013. Approximately 6 months ago, we called the store (Coquitlam) and explained how the couch is starting to sag and become increasingly uncomfortable. We also explained that one of the arm rests feels like the wood support underneath is failing. A technician came to look at the sofa and mentioned that replacing the foam in the cushions could improve the comfort, but it would be expensive, and he did not really address the arm rest. A representative from Scan Designs called a few days later and told us that there was nothing further they wanted to commit to because the warranty had passed and what we had described was normal "wear and tear". We explained that the couch was lightly used in a spare room by two young professionals, and found it hard to swallow that a $1500 piece of furniture was degrading so rapidly. We were told that our expectations were too high because we elected to buy one of the more cost-effective units in the showroom. It was also explained to us that the armrests are designed for arms and not to be sat on, and that we should appreciate that the technician came in a timely fashion to our apartment. Growing increasingly surprised with what we were hearing, we continued to explain that we were honest customers simply trying to illustrate a serious problem with our purchase and looking for some help, and not a handout. The representative became increasingly more defensive, and once the paper-thin professionalism had faded and nothing was left but childish arrogance, we realized the store would be no part of the solution. Since giving up on Scan Designs my boyfriend has tried to figure out ways of reinforcing the couch with extra wooden members in hopes of getting at least 5 years out of the unit. He took the couch felt cover off the bottom to inspect the construction looking for something broken/out-of-place that was potentially easy to fix. Other than the cheap construction, ¼ inch plywood supported with 2x2's in some parts, nothing seemed blatantly awry. He figured the sagging/lack of support was likely coming from fatigue in the nylon/polyester webbing strips--a design flaw Scan Designs wants no part of. The couch looks new because it has been cared for and so lightly used, and yet one cannot sit for longer than 10 minutes without back pain. We have considered selling on craigslist for a fraction of the purchase price, but do not wish this problem on anyone else. The amusing part about this experience is the lesson to be learned--some businesses get it and some do not. The time/cost of satisfying a good customer never approaches the loss of permanently losing them. My boyfriend and I have three furnished rental properties and do not mind spending extra on quality furniture. We go elsewhere now and continue to share our experience with our colleagues. Over the last few years, we have gotten our dining room set and our bedroom set from Scan Designs. We love the clean lines and superior quality of the furniture available (and the wide selection). The solid wood bedroom set will last us forever and the we've had many compliments on our glass dining table. Aside from the quality of the product, the service is fantastic. The sales staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and great at what they do. The show room is huge and the new store (Muse and Merchant) has some incredible modern designs - I can't wait to get our next piece from this family owned business! read more
