I took my Saab to Scanwest for repair. I needed a number of items, water pump, front bearings, tires, etc. The total estimate was close to 3 grand. Like most, we were trying to save money. 3 thousand was a hefty bill for us. To make things more manageable , we decided to get everything done except the water pump. We were simply told it needed to be replaced. it was not explained how urgent the situation was. within a couple of weeks, the water pump failed. We called the shop and I explained that we depend on our repair shop to take a consultative approach. It would have been more helpful if instead of selling us 4 tires (less urgent), they had recommended replacing the water pump and going with just two tires. The repair shop guy we spoke with felt all four were urgently needed. So we decided that the shop was NOT looking out for OUR best interest and had another shop complete the water pump repair. I am reluctant to return to Scanwest for more business. For me, getting my car fixed is MORE than just being another transaction, it's about a relationship where I can trust that my guys are looking out for me, not just trying to turn a dollar. read more

The team & service at Scanwest is amazing!! Today as I tried to bring in my car for a warning light, it died half a block from Scanwest. Craig notified the team when he spotted me, and Chris, Grant and TC spent 30 minutes trying to figure out getting my car down the block without a tow when it couldn't get into neutral for a push. We've had service done several times at Scanwest and find them honest, friendly and super friendly. I can't believe how helpful they were today! read more

My car unexpectedly went into limp mode with many warning lights either lighting or not working. Since it was 730 at night. I thought it best to drive down to Scanwest. They called at 7:30 AM and by 9:30 or so, I had a complete estimate and promise all the work would be completed by the end of the day. That's all great, but only if they know what they are doing. They do. Many times the diagnose on the phone. They stock tons of parts, even for a 20-year-old 9-3. They are trustworthy. No unneeded extras. And most the time they have a cheap loaner/rental Saab. read more

I've been taking my classic 1989 Saab 900S 4-door to Scanwest for quite a few years and never been disappointed. They have rebuilt my air conditioning, replaced shocks, suspension rubber bushings, clutch replacement, oil changes and diagnosed engine check light that was a defective EZK ignition computer. As these Saab cars and parts become more rare you really need a specialist for these cars that know the problems and have an inventory of good used & new parts. I found that Scanwest really stands out and we're really blessed to have Saab specialist in Seattle. I've seen Scanwest notice a previous fix they felt should have been better; and just fixed it. read more

Finally, a great place to take cars for mechanical issues, and not have to deal with dealerships pricing. I've been complaining to Audi for 4 years about a hard shifting transmission and they keep telling me there's nothing that can be done. They say they can feel it, too, but without a "code", they have no path to chase to repair it. After searching and searching, I came across Rob and his team at ScanWest. Rob took time to listen to my unsophisticated description of the problem, and offered some ideas. When I told him Audi said it was unfixable, he laughed and said that didn't surprise him. I mentioned that I had an extended warranty, and he offered to call and explain the issue and see if it was covered. He called me back a few days later with good news; completely covered! And, of the $4800 repair, I'd only have to pay my $100 deductible. Too bad Audi, and thank you Rob. Since ScanWest didn't have the Audi diagnostic software, Rob even paid $2000 out of pocket to get the program needed to fix my car. I googled the issue, and found it's a well known problem with ZF 8 speed transmissions, which are on millions of cars other than Audi, like BMW, dodge, and others. The issue is known as the "2-1 bump" and happens when you are slowing to almost stopping at a cross street, then give gas, and the tranny hesitates between 1st and 2nd gears, then jerks into 2nd, before moving up the gears as usual. Audi told me 6 times over 4 years "no code, no repair". Nice, huh? I'll be moving my repairs and service to the ScanWest guys, as the entire team makes you feel like you're family. It's like Cheers for car service; everybody knows your name. As a side note, while in their shop, somehow a bump occurred to my bumper, and cracked the paint. When I brought it to Robs attention, even though I couldn't prove it happened while there, Rob told me he'd take care of it because he could see how meticulous I was about the car, and that he could tell if I'd done it, I'd have already fixed it. You don't find honesty and responsibility like that much anymore. IMPRESSIVE!!! Really enjoying driving my car now, because it's driving like it just left the showroom, no thanks to Audi. I came here because someone recommended me. As a female I tend to get ripped off and taken advantage of so I am always cautious and have to shop around. For an auto transmission fluid it cost $366 great price no problem, once they finished my car they told me I needed decarbing done, and made it seem like it was my car wasn't going to run if it didn't get it done ASAP. This time after getting me into the shop wanted to charge me $1300 after. Me being skeptical shopped around and found someone who could do it for $500 and literally watched them do it and took less than 10 min to do so, not all day. This was a tactic my auto friends told me to watch out for, especially females...I'm sad to have to add this shop to the list of auto shops not female friendly, and thinks they can pull one over my head and make over 800$ profit from me, just because they figured I wouldn't know any better. Judging me based on the foreign car I was driving was only trying to take advantage of me, I was hesitant to make this review but maybe this can save some other female from getting ripped off by over 200% I did not appreciate being tried and or attempting to take advantage of. I hope you guys learn that not all us women are stupid, and learn to do better. read more

Shout out to Scan West Auto Repair. OMG, I feel so taken care of. I own a 97 Saab 900 Se turbo Convertible, there are only 8 in the country like mine. I started having transmission issues at 165K. I called and was answered by a real human, and told to come on in. I drove in here and straight away got the impression they truly care about me. Everything was explained I was treated with kindness, They gave me options to save me money as well and I'm currently having my ride fixed while I wait. We will make a plan for future needs which I appreciate having an older car I love. AND while I was waiting I was told they have a passenger seat in the back that would fit my car and gave me a fantastic price to replace mine. Mine was shot and I wasn't sure what I was going to do. I have known the folks at Scanwest for years and have always got super helpful and friendly service. Their knowledgeable professionals have always been able to resolve any issues that I have had with my vehicles and they have always done such in an expedient and cost effective manner. As far as businesses go they are one of the most honest group of folks I have ever met: One time I forgot to get my change after I had a bunch of work done, to the tune of almost $100, I live 60 miles from their location and instead of them pocketing my money they actually called me up and asked what I wanted to do, we decided to put it on a credit for me. Took my car for a diagnosis because there was a fuel smell in the engine oil, 2 hours later they called me and they said everything was alright, "it was a normal smell", I continued driving it, when I took it for service next month the dealer found a faulty injector that was letting a little bit of fuel into the engine oil, they replaced it and changed the engine oil and no more fuel smell since then, I usually hate dealers that's why I do all the maintenance with independent shops but this time I was let down for the poor diagnosis they made, my recommendation is to have the diagnosis performed at the dealer since they have all the specialized tools for that and then take it here since it's cheaper. read more

I have been a Scanwest customer for almost two decades. I have brought probably at least 5 different Saabs there for service, including having them do a massive overhaul on one that was totaled a couple of years ago. I've spent a lot here, trusted them, and would have always recommended them. Although they are no longer my daily drivers, I still own three Saabs. I even continued to come here when I move to West Seattle, despite the distance and fact that there is a closer place to go. To be fully transparent, my dad used to call in and pay for my more expensive Saab repairs when I was a student and couldn't afford it. He has referred people here and came to know and trust them. Later, I began to pay for my own repairs and acquire even more of the cars I love so much. And I have paid for A LOT here over the years. Craig has always helped me out and been great to deal with. This review is not a reflection on him. Lynn would always go out of his way to explain what he had done on my car and I always enjoyed talking with him. This is not about Lynn, either. This review is a reflection of the attitude we have receive twice now in trying to get vehicles serviced this year. Once was shocking and not good, but twice is too much. I'm done coming here and giving them my business as well as referring my other Saab enthusiast friends here. Why? Earlier this year someone here was beyond rude to us and when we showed up to get a car that was supposed to be ready and wasn't - my partner came back to get a loaner that was supposed to be available and took the bus from work to get it, they didn't have it and were super rude to him about it. I was pretty upset given my history here over the years and let them know on an internal feedback form I got via email. Craig reached out and tried to make it right. We gave them another chance. Last week we called to let them know we were having our convertible towed up. It was broken into about a month or so ago and this was the first chance we would have to tow it up there. Russ was very rude and said that if it had been sitting at our house obviously it wasn't a real priority and the lot was full. We said fine, how about tomorrow for drop off? No, again reiterating that it must not have been a priority to us. Look, I get it that they are busy and the lot may be full. That's fine and not my issue. It was the delivery and judgment when all we did was bother to call and tell them we were towing it up. Russ has no idea what a struggle it is for two very busy people to find the time to tow a car from West Seattle to Greenwood. It actually was a priority and we had a small window in which to do it over the next couple of days before we were traveling again. We could have even waited and had a friend handle it later if he had not been a jerk about it. For what it's worth, I've towed there more times than I can count, usually after hours, and NEVER had anyone not shift things around to keep my car there even if they couldn't get to it right away. This was probably the first time we had called about towing there and for trying to give them a heads up, this is the thanks we got. Swedish was happy to get the car in, very friendly, quick diagnosis (it would not have taken Scanwest much to address the issue), and repair. They also texted to keep me posted. Nice touch. I'm sad Scanwest obviously doesn't care about my business enough to make sure people who call talk to someone that will treat them basic respect and that we can't go there anymore. Being nice and non-judgmental isn't hard. It's a small thing that could have kept a lifetime of business. read more

The Scanwest crew are great! I stopped by to have my brakes checked and they had no problem squeezing me in the same day. They are super friendly, gave me an honest recommendation about my car (no brake pads needed just yet) and even helped me put on my new license plates with no charge. If you do much Googling around Saab repair in Seattle, you're bound to run into a recommendation for Scanwest. Beware! After taking my '93 Saab Turbo into the shop a few times, I began to refer to them as Scamwest for the following reasons: 1. I never got out of there for less than $800 dollars, no matter why I'd taken the car in. Why? Why? 2. My Turbo worked when the car went into the shop and didn't work the same after that, although they weren't supposed to touch the Turbo and claimed they hadn't. So, what happened? 3. They would call me on the phone and quote me a price. If I challenged them, they'd lower it a little. Once, my beau went in on my behalf and they lowered the bill by several hundred. WTF? How about charging a fair price for good service? 4. They give customers a $50 incentive to refer them. Can you really trust those referrals? Now, they did repair what they said they were going to repair -- so that was fine. And, granted, my experiences might have been extraordinary. But I never walked away from that shop feeling confident that I'd gotten a good deal for good service and after just a few visits, my trust was shot. I'm not saying don't go there; but if you do, be sure to get details on their methods, do your homework, and question both your and their assumptions when the invoice comes due. read more

I'm surprised by the negative reviews here. I've taken my 1987 Saab 900 S to Scanwest many times over the ten years I've owned it, both for emergencies and for regular minor/major tuneups. They've always been courteous. They've always taken pains to explain what's up with my car, and helped me prioritize things I should fix right away vs things I could live with. Often, I noticed that they had tightened up things that I hadn't specifically asked them to fix (like the clutch, for instance) without charging me for it. They always gave me reasonably accurate estimates, and if something came up to change their estimate, they always called me very quickly to explain the change and get my permission to move forward. My annual(ish) visits usually cost between $1000 and $2000. I consider that acceptable for annual upkeep on a 20 year old European car. So, yeah. I like Scanwest, I've been pleased with their customer service, and I recommend them. read more

I've been meaning to review Scanwest since December and am only disappointed in myself for taking so long to get around to it. [ D e t a i l e d E x p e r i e n c e ] The staff on the phones we very efficient answering my questions and booking my appt. There was a slight mix up on my scheduled day where a loaner wasn't available, but my car was checked out quickly by the owner and scheduled to come back the next day for the repairs - which were quoted at about 30% of what Swedish Automotive in West Seattle was trying to get me to pay. The repairs ended up not fixing the original problem (though all were needed), but allowed us to realize the actual problem was a worn out Evaporative Purge Valve which wasn't triggering the normal replacement codes. They were so nice and apologetic about the original fix not working that they offered to keep my old Purge Valve on hand in case the fix didn't work, at which point they would refund my money plus reinstall the old valve. The new valve did the trick, and my car has been running wonderfully! [ C o m m u n i c a t i o n 5 / 5 ] Everyone from the staff, to the mechanics, to the owner are very friendly and helpful. I never felt like my questions were stupid, and they made sure I understood everything completely. I really got the feeling they go out of their way to make sure their customers are happy. [ L o a n e r C a r s 5 / 5 ] I had the pleasure of driving 3 different loaner cars while my repairs were being done. All were clean, ran lovely, and all were actually Saabs! If I remember correctly they were $25 for the duration of the repair. [ C o s t 5 / 5 ] Significantly lower than what I was quoted elsewhere, and I feel very comfortable with estimates on other repairs needed in the future. If the fix really only requires the cost of a ziptie and a couple minutes, that's all you'll be paying for. I will definitely be going back! read more

I love Scanwest! I've been bringing my car here for 12 years, after dealing with a couple of other Saab mechanics in the area. I've always been treated well and always fairly. Their work is excellent, the engine just purrs when I leave. My Turbo engine still runs as well now as it did twelve years ago, but I bring it in for all its recommended routine maintenance. When I've brought in my car if there's a question of cost, they've worked with me, especially in finding still serviceable, used replacement parts. They are the only mechanic I've ever gone to when if they do a tune up, they've said, "Your spark plugs were still good, so we didn't replace them," rather than replacing perfectly good plugs and charging me because I wouldn't know anyway. More than once I've gotten a quote, come to pick up the car and the actual cost is lower. I think this is because they're scrupulously honest and they have so many long term clientele that it's just a smart business practice. If I haven't understood something mechanical they've taken the time to explain it to me, sometimes more than once. When my car was in an accident they really bent over backwards to help me: they explained how the confusing insurance process works, gave it an "all clear" safety check, then they did excellent body work, and got me back on the road as quickly as possible. (By the way, if you ever have to be a combined velocity accident of 100mph, be in a Saab. There was no significant damage to anything but the car door, and none whatsoever to me). I am so convinced that they're a find that I don't want to own anything but a Saab or a Subaru. I wouldn't want to have to try and find a mechanic this trustworthy and this good. I've not yet been disappointed with their work. In the past, at other shops, I've been treated like an idiot and once flat out ripped off by mechanics. When I have to pay for car repair, I never like it, but I'm at least never worried that I'm being taken advantage of at Scanwest. read more

You have to be Saab owner to get why you would never take your Saab to one of these places that services "All European Brands". With that as a starting point, there are only a few places in town worth comparing. Not wanting to put down the other two Saab-only shops, I'll just focus positively on Scanwest. These guys are the real deal. They're in it because they eat, sleep, breathe Saab. As you drive up Greenwood Ave to their forrest-wrapped location, you can see the Saabs spilling out into the road for a quarter mile before you get there. That's what I'm talking about. I don't want to see a bunch of Mercedes/BMW junkers when I go see my Saab repair homies. Next, repairing Saab's ain't cheap. I don't care who you go to. If it seems cheap, then I start to wonder where those parts came from, or if the techs even bothered to test the repairs. Shiver. I mean, you didn't think that repairs on a car with 100K miles that still sells for $8,000 were going to be on par with repairs for your uncle's F-150? I'm not just drinking the kool-aid here when I say I would take a 15 year-old Saab over most cars on the road. Anyway, on several occasions the Scanwest guys have helped me out when they could have scheduled me a week out and charged me for a $50 office visit. One time I was doing a repair myself and the tech came out and showed me which hoses I had mixed up behind the dashboard. I guess this is to say, if you let these guys take care of your car, they will take care of *you*. read more

I've been going there for years and it's one of the reasons I have a Saab. Rob is the owner and he is very fair. Best repair service I've ever received! I've an older Saab that is falling a part. First the transfer case, then, while in the shop, we found out the alternator and belt also went bad, then it was the transfer case and motor. Lastly, as we finished paying the bill, I drove the car up and opened the (already loose) door just to have the interior break off. Thank God for @ScanwestAuto! They gave us the best professional service. They called us with progress updates, showed us what went wrong and how, and even showed us how to get quality parts for cheap on our own! I've had my 900 in for service at Scanwest a number of times over the past 8 months, and the guys there always do a thorough and professional job. The front desk folks are always very courteous and knowledgeable. The initial price estimates they give are pretty much on the nose, give or take a few dollars. I've had a few work order changes, but they've always called me immediately and explained the situation clearly before asking for approval. They are also very good at explaining what repairs can wait, and for roughly how long. This is nice for those of us who don't like to feel pressured to have work done. The service staff is usually available for questions, and they will often outline your options on repairs. They are also quick to fix any mistakes - after I had my front brakes done, my brake lights were working intermittently. I called them up, dropped off the car, and they had me back on the road within 30 minutes...apologies provided, no questions asked. The after hours drop off service is extremely convenient and works as advertised. Also, when they tell you your car will be ready at 4:00pm, it's generally ready at 4:00pm. They've called me once or twice a few hours early to tell me the car was good to go, which was an unexpected bonus. Scanwest's prices are on par with, and often cheaper than, most other Saab-specific garages. When I do shop around for estimates, they always provide one of the lower-cost quotes. To be honest, I think the prices are extremely fair and very competitive, especially considering the level of service that they provide. So far, Scanwest has been an absolutely solid 5 star experience. read more

We were referred to Scanwest Autosport by a good friend; then later, another good friend referred us. Both Saab owners who had been going to Scanwest for many years. No $50 referral fee involved (see below); we know, we didn't indicate that we had been referred so no fee could have been paid. We have a '04 Saab 9-3 and they've done good work at a reasonable price on each of two visits. It's not cheap by any means but certainly reasonable for a foreign car. We also have a BMW and pricing is similar if not less for Saab repairs. We don't take the BMW to Scanwest, rather, it goes to Hobb's Hilltop Auto. The Saab will go in again this weekend so hopefully we'll have another good experience. So far, we're satisfied with Scanwest. read more

I love these guys, and Craig especially is just amazing. I don't know why he is so nice when i know my situation must be a pain in the ass. They've done repairs on my '07 saab 9-3 aero sport Combi before and one day when i was in Bothell i tried to start my car, and well.... Basically it just went "NOOOOPE". I had my car towed to them, and really only gave them a 10 minute heads-up max, 5 minutes before they closed. They didn't say anything about the fact that it's super inconvenient and they were closing, and most likely had a near full lot like they always do! They just took it and called me the next morning to tell me my engine had to be replaced or overhauled and the cheapest option was replacement running about 5100$. Well I'm 23, work barely above minimum wage (not even Seattle min. Wage), and i had a lot to think about. Fast forward two weeks and i finally decided to get a new car, they never rushed me once, made sure my car was safe on their lot, and even offered to buy it from me for parts! And then the cherry on top was that, since i bought a Volvo, i was sad i would have to find new ppl to service it that i trusted, well, nope! Craig told me they've started taking Volvo's recently and i can stick with them if i wanted to.... Of course i do! Knocked one star down for the guy who works the front desk (not sure if that's all the time or if he's a mechanic that just had that duty for a few days or something) the first few times i came in is a total jerk. Doesn't greet you, doesn't even acknowledge you until you say something of interest to him. Really bad customer service skills on that guy. But every mechanic I've met is amazing and they all are nice to my dog and they let me bring him inside which makes them great in my book! read more

I recently made the questionable life choice to rather emotionally acquire a 2002 Saab 9-3 Viggen. What gave me confidence is that the seller had over 8 years of service history for the car, all from Scanwest. I made the purchase knowing that I was going to need to sink some serious money into it upfront to get it mechanically sorted to a degree that I found acceptable and where I would be comfortable really driving it the way a Viggen should be driven. We'll just say it was some heavy duty work - head gasket, valve cover gasket, timing chain and tensioner, serpentine belt, and the list goes on. All told, in my first week of ownership, I spent about as much as I paid for the car. I loved the car when I dropped it off, but when I got it back and put my foot down it felt like I was driving a car with half the mileage and less than half the age. These guys are smart, practical, and can tell you with confidence what to expect over the life of ownership of your Saab. My experience with older European cars (let alone orphaned European cars) is getting caught up on deferred maintenance and then being proactive with the trouble spots will save you a lot of heartache. During the course of the repair work, Craig called me with some recommendations of parts to replace that would just be parts costs as the engine was already taken apart for the originally scoped work. I really appreciated that. Lastly, they gave me one of their loaners to use for the duration of repairs. While my repair only took 2 days, I ended up keeping the loaner closer to 3.5 because I got sick during the week. They didn't hassle me about picking up the car or returning their loaner at all, something I also appreciated. These guys are the real deal - not many shops out there like this anymore. There are very few parts of the country where I'd feel comfortable daily driving a Saab, but with Scanwest nearby, I have no concerns at all. read more

I've been a long time loyal, but irregular customer of Scanwest for my Saab 9000 for nearly 20 years. I have a family fleet and do 98% of the maintenance myself including rebuilding engines. Every now and again I need Scanwest's help, perhaps for some obscure tool or things conspire against me when I am out of town. I know I can trust Scanwest to use their brains and knowledge of the cars to suggest and do the right thing. They have tons of used parts and are good guys as well. I currently have the privilege of driving my boyfriend's Saab which also lands me the responsibility of taking care of the car when minor things happen. First off, i'm pretty sure this is a family run business and they've been doing this for a long time now which means these guys know how to look for problems and treat a customer at the same time! Rare to find in any/most autobody repair shops these days. I was late at brining the car in for a scheduled appoitnment but the guys we're understanding and took my car anyway, while I browsed over People magazines for hour and half. Every once awhile one of the guys at the front desk would check on the car and give me an update of whats happening with the vehicle and even reserved me a rental car in case the diagnostics took too long. I was more impressed with the cleanliness of the shop, water tank, and a free bowl of candy with hand sanitizer nearby. I really didn't believe I was in a autobody shop. To top it off the guys are amazing at working with pricing here whether it be for parts, car rental, and getting your car back to you on time because its a hassel having it in the shop. Maybe my future car will be a Saab because I know, I'll have a great place to take my car in for care. read more
