Does this car look "unsalvageable to you?
    Mike B.

I have used these guys before and been happy. This time however, they really shafted me. The brakes went out in my hearse the Friday before the week before Halloween. I stopped in the shop and asked if they could fix it before Halloween, they said yes, bring the car in Monday and "we'll have it done by Wednesday". So I ordered a tow company to take the car to them. That was the Monday before Halloween. I didn't hear from them at all so I called Thursday. The owner of the shop answered and 1st told me that the master cylinder on the car was wrong (I've owned the car for 3 yrs and never had any brake issues and I looked online at replacement ones before I had the car towed in and mine looked correct), and that they were waiting on parts which were to arrive Tuesday (after Halloween). I said I need the car before Halloween so he said "we'll have it done by Monday afternoon". Friday morning around 10am I get a txt from them with a video, and a message saying that the car was not salvageable and they were pushing it out to the curb. I wasn't going to leave my hearse on the curb in Ballard over the weekend. How rude! Imagine my shock, the car was fine until this, it only has 28K miles on it! Since I was leaving town at 11am I had to act fast and arrange another tow. I was furious and I know that the owner lied to me because they wouldn't order parts until they knew which to order and seeing the video it was obvious that they hadn't even looked at it until Friday ! Therefore, they have lost my trust and I won't be using them ever again. To finish the story, no hearse for Halloween but I did find a brake shop and they fixed the car in 2.5 days ! Works great again. And it didn't take 35-40hrs like Dr. Don's suggested, and the car was salvageable. They just didn't want to do the work. My hearse was rusty underneath and probably came from a place where they salt the roads. Even so, you don't just throw a car away because of rust, and fear of parts breaking, that's the JOB, fix it. Dr. Don's cost me over $500 in towing fees and lost sleep, emotional distress and anxiety. Adios.

I had the pleasure of taking my 2014 Volt to Doctor Don's and experience first hand what a class act Ric and his crew are. They took exceptional care of my car when it was in the shop. I really feel that I received excellent value for what I paid and the work which was performed. Doctor Don's has been serving the Ballard for years and community if fortunate to have this successful, family owned business in their back yard. Doctor Don's techs can do it all; old & new, foreign & domestic, gas & hybrid! Don't hesitate to take your auto to Doctor Don's for your next routine maintenance or emergency.

No 1 Japanese Auto could have also tried to take advantage of a non-gearhead like myself. Instead Tony pointed out a fraction of a fraction of the issues that other place mentioned (10 months later, my car is still running fine). Another time took my car in because my breaks were squeaking/grinding in very specific conditions. Even when I called Tony said "we didn't see you that long ago, but better safe than sorry." After inspecting, he said my breaks don't need replacing yet, but maybe by the time for my next oil change. I figured I'd at least pay for the labor of looking. But when I picked it up -- nope! No charge. Tony is a real one.

Found Tony after my then current repair shop turned from small business to large business. Turning to large business the shop lost all the good customer service they gave. Tony was a great find, called my car "classic" and was happy to chat about my car. Called today to schedule an oil change, had not heard back from him from a VM I left 3 days ago. I spoke to him today, he flatly said, " I don't work on old cars anymore ". I asked him not even for an oil change? He said no, too hard to get parts. Ok- it's certainly his choice to not work on certain cars because of his ability, but be aware that his shop doesn't work on whatever he deems as "old". When electric and newer cars that require computers to diagnose and repair become the norm, places like Tony's will be considered "old" and fall out of need.

In my case the first visit my license plate screws were rusted on so I couldn't get them off to put on new plates. I took it down to High Road and it was taken care of in about an hour. They called me when it was ready, and I came right back over. My second visit again, that light (no pun intended) but annoying job - was literally a light job - changing out brake lights. Yeah I tried to do it myself and it was just frustrating getting the panel off. The technician did them both for me in like 20 minutes. Each of my visits it cost me a little over $35. Steep? Maybe a bit, but I've all but reached that point where these annoying little jobs are worth me paying a few dollars to get done in a few minutes. Especially when the technicians have the tools, the know-how and a garage. Yeah, doing any kind of car work when it's cold and or rainy outside is not fun. Each of my visits, the front staff were very pleasant, and I hear the same when they interact with others via phone or walk ins. It's also very convenient here which is also a plus, right on Leary ave., not hard to miss. The couple snags about High Road is parking is a bit tricky. The parking is usually taken up by other customer cars or nearby patrons of the breweries or other businesses so it's a tricky on a busy day. Also they're closed on weekends. That's a drag because I work all day on Weekdays so it's also tricky getting here at a time that works for me. It's a big letdown. Other than that, I've liked the service I've gotten here and will continue to come back.

I'd give 4.5 stars for the actual service here. However, a couple years back they hired another service advisor (desk guy) who is a bit of a problem. He's nice, but in the used car salesman kind of way. He will pressure you to get work done, whereas the original desk guy (he still works there as far as I know) just says "here's what we think, tell me what you want to do" and then will have a straightforward conversation with you if you have questions or want to brainstorm ideas. If you're good with boundaries you might be ok with the new guy, but I'm usually pretty good about saying "no", and I still ended up with some stuff that I didn't really want/could have done myself. The other issue, which is harder to get around, is that the new guy just doesn't listen. You can explain your problem to him, but he may or may not talk over you or pay attention to what you're saying. You need to be very forceful, to the point of feeling even a little rude (which I hate doing to anyone in a customer service role) to get your point across. It's almost like he takes personal offense if you have a different observation than he does. This is an issue because the mechanics can only fix something if they know what the problem is, and customer history is an important part of that. I was really hoping that the service advisor was just having an off day the first time this happened, because I like Bernie's, but unfortunately it has persisted. For context, I am a woman: I don't want to assume this is part of the problem, but I'm open to the possibility that it is -- basically, this is my caveat that your mileage may vary.
