Decent place to grab a burger. They do have one veggie burger option as well. The food is always decent. The cashier's are always friendly enough. The ambiance is very casual...your typical burger joint. The food is a bit pricey in my opinion...$15 for a meal, which includes a burger, a side, and a drink. They do have specials each night of the week. There is also an Abbotts inside, which is a nice way to grab a frozen custard after your burger. My family comes here a fair amount. Believe it or not, I had never been here before. And since I drive by it on the corner of Panorama all the time, I don't know how that even happened. My husband wanted to try it, so we went for dinner and ate there. It has a much larger and nicer dining room than I was expecting. I thought it was more of a fast food type place. I ordered online, and it was a ready a few minutes after we got there. I had a grilled cheese trash plate, and my husband got a tender plate. His plate had SO MUCH sauce on it! He really liked it, but it was really, really messy. Mine was a lot of food, so I took some home. It was all good. I would get it again. We joined their club so we got a free burger, so we went back again a few weeks later. My husband had the burger, and I just got a grilled cheese. I got a side of fries, and it was HUGE! One orders at the counter and self served. I had a terrific cheeseburger and fries with drink for about $16 with tax and tip. Clean, friendly environment with comfort food in a hurry. Green Aliens keep ordering stuff online using Gray Alien Credit Card details. This scam is messing up the whole system because now the companies always Bill Grays for the charges made by Greens. Who would have thought interstellar scams could become as commonplace as Nigerian and Burkina Fasoan (is that correct?) bank scams? Who knew. The employees here are really, really, really nice. I stayed for a good hour using wifi and they were lovely to me. I appreciated the outlet, the excellent working wifi, the friendly employees, and of course the delicious World's Best Cheeseburger. One of the girls came behind me (not literally) and said "don't mean to creep on you, just closing this." It was super sweet. If you like Bill Gray's check out this location. But I don't recommend you get the Garbage Plate. It's just not as good as other Rochester places make it. Bill Grays is the only Rochester institution that has successfully "cracked" Buffalo, although it only has a few locations out in the 716, and one of them - in the mall - recently closed down along with the whole food court. It's a wonderful place with an excellent Cheeseburger (the world's best, they boast), and they have a delicious frozen custard shop attached to every location (as far as I have seen until now) named Abbott's. I'll review that separately but if you are ever in a BGs, make sure you try the Abbott's Vanilla Custard. I wish Bill Grays well, especially regarding dealing with those pesky aliens. read more

What a great find! We were in Penfield for a baseball tournament and came across this place- it was so good we came back twice! The kid's burgers are really big, and my kiddos could barely finish them. Shakes can be added for an upcharge, which is well worth it. This place has food like Red Robin, but self-serve drinks and stuff, and a restaurant-like ambience. Great for families. Extra shoutout to Chloe, who was super patient and nice while I figured out our order and kept having to make changes. She made our experience great! read more

I've never had an issue with anything I've ever purchased at the Penfield Bill Grays. The best thing is that the food here is always consistent. It tastes the same as it did 20+ years ago. The hot meat sauce is yum. Also, there is an Abbott's attached so you can get your chocolate almond ice cream the same time you get your world famous bill grays cheeseburger. Delicious takeout fish fries for two of us on a Friday night. Good sized portion of flakey, moist fish. Ordered the fish well done for a good crunch. What happened to this place? Bill Grays claims nothing has changed but I'm here to tell you, the burgers are half the thickness they were in the past. This was absolutely the WORST burger I've ever had. I threw out half of it. It was like it was cooked before hand & then just reheated. My husband ate his, but he wasn't happy with it. While I was at the Racquet Club, I approached Gabe about the opportunity of getting lunch after abs. He agreed and suggested Bill Gray's because of its close proximity. I was reluctant to say yes because of the reunion dinner incident, but I did. That was a mistake. Gabe and I both ordered a Cheeseburger and fries. The total came out to $11.79 which I thought was a little high, however I figured that it meant higher quality. The burger looked like it had been constructed by a person wearing a blindfold. All of the condiments were just stuffed in randomly. Holding the burger was like holding a cat that doesn't like to be picked up. The bun tasted similar to the bread that comes with any subpar garbage plate. The bottom bun of my burger was completely soaked. Probably due to the grease and tears of Penfield alumni still working there. The fries were nothing special. They seemed to have been sitting in the warmer for awhile despite a busy crowd. The container was nearly half empty. Generic frozen fries not worth $3.79. Gabe and I left disappointed and still hungry. We even considered going back to the gym but felt too ashamed. Should have gone to Burger King or Pour House instead. To Summit Up, the sign on the garbage can in Bill Gray's that read "Thank You" might as well have said "F*ck You". I have eaten at Bill Grays before. Long time ago before we moved away from Rochester. I went today and I have to agree with one of the reviews here. It's not the same place. I'm not a picky eater at all. I will eat anything but today I had the worst grilled chicken sandwich of my life! I could taste the ammonia in the chicken! It was awful. The curly fries rescued my meal. I had to throw the sandwich away. The milkshake was made with some powdery stuff. It was not ice cream. It was a terrible lunch experience. I love Bill Grays and could literally eat here every day. I've never had a bad meal here. I'm not a fan of thick burgers and these are perfect. I always get deluxe (mayo, lettuce, tomato). Onion rings are excellent. Make sure you get a side of blue cheese for dipping. Definitely get a side of gravy to dip your fries. Hot sauce too. And the hot sauce heats depends on the day and who made it. Can range from holy hell thats hit to pleasant kick. I always get a side of pickles too. Now that I think about it part of the appeal of Billy G's are the sides! Make sure you take a coupon, doesn't matter if it's expired or not. read more

Great Greasy Burgers Come on, you know exactly what you're getting here. Burgers swimming in grease. I quit meat (mostly) about a year and a half ago, and I don't miss steak, chicken, pork, ribs, duck, none of it. Except cheeseburgers. I'm allowing myself one a year, as a reward for being healthy. That makes each burger decision a big one. And I know there are fancier burgers out there, big juicy ones cooked to order on *brioche* or whatever. With foie gras or caviar on them, with whatever the Amateur Top Chef's spin on french fries is. But fuck that shit. Father's Day, and I wanted a good, greasy burger, and Bill Gray's won my business. Phenomenal greasy burger on the famous DiPaolo's roll. Double bacon cheeseburger with all the fixins, including pickled jalapeños and a fried egg on top. Aw fuck yeeah. Celebrate vegetarianism by easting a whole damn farmyard in one meal. It was huge and blissful. Halfway in, I thik I entered some kind of fugue state, some transcendental trance or something. I saw my dead grandma, riding a unicorn. And I saw the buddha. I asked him how to achieve nirvana. He told me to eat the rest of the burger, polish it off with onion rings and some frozen custard and I'd be there. He was right. The onion rings are great: the batter stays the hell on them, unlike many other places. The custard is the same incredible texture as ever. I have two suggestions for imrovement: 1) get spicier jalapeños. The jarred variety varies widely in spiciness between brands. Get a spicy kind. These were tasty, but I want to cauterize my tastebuds. 2) Cook the egg really runny. I'll ask them for this when I come for father's day next year. The heat of the burger had that yolk pretty well scrambled. If it would have run all over the bacon, I may have begun speaking in tongues. read more

I finally joined my friends on their garbage plate Tuesdays. To my surprise Bill Gray's offers $5.99 "Great Plates" all day every Tuesday. Choice of Cheeseburger, Hot Dog or BOTH! To my surprise, Bill Gray's serves beer on tap (Labatt, Bud, Coors, Guinness, Molson, Blue Moon, Yuengling, Rohrbach, Sam Adams, Southern Tier) and some selections of Barefoot wines...I think I also spotted some Red Cat from Hazlitt. I opted for the Southern Tier IPA. My excitement kinda dwindled after the first sip. Beer was warm but did not taste like it had gone bad. I think that the taps being so close to the kitchen may have been a factor on the poor temperature of what should have been a pint of delishiz nectar of life. For the "great plate", I went with the cheeseburger w/mac and home fries, loaded with the works. I normally just order a cheeseburger with an over easy fried egg. This was my first experience with garbage plates at Bill Gray's. Overall it was just average. The burgers had the standard thickness but were a good size. Mac salad had too much mayo and a sub-par taste, but the home fries were good. The meat sauce was also pretty standard and not spicy. This location is huge and roomy with an Abbott's frozen custards inside. There are mounted televisions that were playing the world series on my last visit. It was also kept clean, Didn't see what their restrooms looked like though. The price makes a return visit worth it and I hope that they fix the temperature problem when serving the beer on tap. Maybe moving it away from the kitchen. Not sure if this is an issue with other locations, but I hope to spoil myself again :) read more

Quality slipping, short menu items on Friday lunch, dirty. Not sure what's happened here. Was far better even a year ago. Gradually slipping. Place half empty on a Friday after holiday. Lots of workers. Talking. Lots of very dirty booths, tables, chairs. Spider webs in corner by bathroom. Trays and trash on multiple tables the entire time we were eating here. No chowder. No soup for soup of the day. Gone is that awesome sear on burgers. Taste frozen. May not be but taste is not the same. No clams strips. I used to love this place. Started bringing my kids here a few years ago and they loved it. Not this time. No, Dad, can we come back next time...nope. They don't want to come back. What can I say? I have a coupon that says "Buy one Cheeseburger Get one Free". Two cheeseburgers and one onion ring later the bill was over $11.00. How could this be? Like... how much were those onion rings? As it turns out, not THAT much. Cheeseburgers are $5.25... so why did they subtract $4.25 from the bill for the second cheeseburger? When I asked why they didn't subtract the full $5.25 from the bill the supervisor said that the machine didn't read the coupon correctly. Hmmm! That strikes me as kind of odd. This coupon runs in hundreds of newspapers and how many customers actually spotted this "error"? (or funded Bill Gray's unknowingly). We are not amused. In fairness, we did get the $1.00 overcharge refunded but this would only have happened if the error was brought to a supervisor's attention. The clerk did not know what happened. Bill Gray's burgers are pretty good-- they are plain but they are sort of simple in a good way, all misshapen and stuff. While there is a decent selection of toppings, don't expect anything gourmet. One time I ordered a blue cheese and bacon burger... I had to laugh, it was a burger with bacon, of course, but the blue cheese was that tasteless salad bar dressing (with minimal blue cheese, mostly mystery hydrogenated white stuff). Ah well. Fries are super greasy here. I don't know if it is the fryer temp or what. I still order them but always wonder if my heart will last by the time I walk out to the car. I wouldn't normally seek out this place, but it is ok once in a while. It is still wayyyyy better than any of the drive thru options. Prices are high, get a coupon! I hate to be that person, but this place is awful in every way possible. The employees seem nice enough but screw up everything and don't seem to care. The place is always filthy. The tables are never cleaned, the area by the soda machines is always filled with spills and garbage. It isn't a one time thing, it's every time.
