Local out of the way spot with friendly staff and vintage pinball and pac man games. Large variety of beers and gruits. The outdoor patio was a nice and super laid back vibe. The beer was very good, but wish it was a little colder.

Stopped in at Schmohz Brewing on a cold, wet, rainy Wednesday evening. There were only a couple of other customers when I arrived. I ordered a flight of beers: Amber Tease Ale (5.1% ABV) Pail Ale (APA)(5.1% ABV) India Pale Ale (6.4% ABV) BoneCrusher Stout (6.5% ABV) Hopknocker Imperial IPA (9.2% ABV) I was underwhelmed by the flight. The best out of the bunch was the "Pail Ale" - which for my tastebuds - was not saying a lot. Service was good. I probably won't be back - there is better craft beer to be had around Grand Rapids. #SchmohzBrewingCo

I stopped in at Schmohz Brewing Company to grab a drink & some food, while in east Grand Rapids. I was surprised when the bartender told me they did not do any kind of food; I assumed even though there was not a full kitchen they would have a few options for snacks. I just got a flight of beer, which I thought was mostly average (full-disclosure, I am somewhat of a beer snob). The bartender also did not come around to check on me for quite a while, which I found odd. Also, the building was not well lit, and had a dirty/dingy feel to it. The prices were good and it seemed like a fun, local watering hole. Overall, I was just not very impressed. It would be worth a try, but not a "must-visit" destination, by any means.

This may be my favorite brewery and I've been to a lot. Their beers are great. Conversation at the bar with Chaz was fun and the popcorn is good. No food and not much to look at but it doesn't need it.

Life changing- beer float. Vanilla ice cream and bone crusher stout

I recently asked around to see who in Grand Rapids has the best-house made root beer. Schmohz was the clear leader among everyone I polled. In fact, I'm not sure if there is any other place in GR that makes their own root beer onsite (msg me if I'm wrong). I stopped in to see if what I was hearing was true. I'm happy to report that yep- they do indeed some mighty fine root beer! Their normal beers are pretty darn good as well. Although I've known about their neighborhood brewery, tucked away off of 28th street on Patterson, for some time, I don't make a visit out often enough. In addition to their snappy and sweet house-made root beer, I really liked the Zingiberene Ale aka the 'Zing' . Made with ginger, it doesn't have any hops to it for a totally different taste. I can take it or leave it when it comes to hoppy beer, so this one appealed to me. The real game changer happened when I requested a root beer float. The bartender said yeah, sure she could do that for me....or she could make me a beer float, with their Bone Crusher Stout, their malty, chocolaty beer. Ice cream and beer?! Ice Cream IN beer?! Sold. The stout would've been a indulgent enough but with the creamy vanilla ice cream in it (you know the kind, from the big clear plastic tub someone's mom had a birthday party when you were a kid), it was simple, straight-up, to the point YUM-MY! It was a win/win - desert and an alcoholic beverage. Perfect way to end my recent visit.

For a board game bar, I usually expect food to take a back seat or be phoned in, but everything was delicious! I had to try the elote deviled eggs, which was a combo I had never considered but I'm so glad someone did! I also got the truffle mac and cheese and a house salad. Both were excellent! The board game selection was extensive, with old favorites and hidden gems. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll be sure to stop in again!

Unfortunately, the food, beer, and service were all just okay for me. The beers were pretty mediocre, and we tried the duck confit nachos, which sounded much more exciting than they actually were. They were fine, but nothing particularly special or memorable. Service was also mediocre. We had a pretty large group, so I'm sure that didn't make things easier, but we waited about an hour and a half just to be seated. Part of our group was made up of small children, and it seemed like we could have been accommodated sooner given that there was plenty of flexibility with our seating. Overall, I really wanted to love Brewery Vivant because the atmosphere is so unique, but the experience just didn't live up to the setting. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back.

The staff were friendly and we appreciated "The Library" filled with games and books. I was nostalgic and read Hunter's Guide to 1996 Michigan complete with a recommendation to stop at the now obsolete Pleasure Island Water Park. That used to be my absolute favorite getaway as a kid! We ordered arancini as a starter that came out tasting crisp like a tator tot, but the shape and taste actually reminded me more of a fried tteokbokki (Korean rice noodle) known for its deliciousness through its texture highlighting the spicy sauce. This would've been amazing had they had a nice gochujang mayo combo to dip this crispy treasure in, rather than ranch and pizza sauce. Next we tried the tikka masala pizza. Fun and inventive idea... much better than the naan pizza I had in Muskegon... however the sauce didn't taste as good as my homemade tikka masala base and though the pizza was tasty with varied texture, we found it somewhat lacked seasoning especially on the protein. If I were to construct it, instead of potato I would've had chicken, red pepper, cilantro, fresh avocado and pickled onion. Yum! To drink, I enjoyed a refreshing ginger Kombucha sourced from Walker Brothers in Nashville Tennessee. The kids loved their cheese pizza and cheese smash burger with fries and drinks. Overall, great first experience and would love to come back as it seems like they are constantly reinventing themselves with tasty morsels and brews. If you come, there is free parking in the back. I perused the food menu and checked out the merch. Sadly they did not have the tshirt I liked in my size. They also sell beanies, glassware and hoodies. Oh, and beer to go! I enjoyed the two IPAs with Good Good being my fave, followed by IPA#1. The porter was good and so was the Kona brown. The fade was my least fave, and it pretty much tasted like Guinness, but I did drink it all. I have preferences but I also have values! Lol. The off duty employee and I chatted awhile, even looping in the bar tender and my other bar stool neighbor, especially when it came down to naming the artists on the decorative candles (see pic). We were having so much fun that we decided on her having another beer and me getting a couple more samples. The Mosacca IPA was really good. The Economy, gotta love the name, was also good and the most affordable beer! Look at them looking out for the people. Loved this place. The locals are friendly. Did not eat but all the food I saw looked good! Would return to enjoy more beer, fun convos and to buy a size small shirt!
