I went here with friends and had a nice time. They have tables so you can bring games and it was pretty quiet which was nice. They just have beer drinks and no food (with the exception of popcorn --which is complimentary and they have seasonings by it too). I ended up getting a root beer and it was just 3$ and DELICIOUS (and paired well with the popcorn I had). They also have a pool table there if you wanna play a game with friends. Stopped in at Schmohz Brewing on a cold, wet, rainy Wednesday evening. There were only a couple of other customers when I arrived. I ordered a flight of beers: Amber Tease Ale (5.1% ABV) Pail Ale (APA)(5.1% ABV) India Pale Ale (6.4% ABV) BoneCrusher Stout (6.5% ABV) Hopknocker Imperial IPA (9.2% ABV) I was underwhelmed by the flight. The best out of the bunch was the "Pail Ale" - which for my tastebuds - was not saying a lot. Service was good. It feels like you've walked into a time machine. The decor, the vibe -- everything about this screams old school. We came here as it was one of the closest breweries to the airport. What else could you ask for? What they aren't old school in is their menu. They have a very extensive tap menu with very nice and knowledgeable owners. It's the type of place you'd want to get multiple flights from, but you also understand that somehow you need to get home. It's hard to remember exactly which brews I tried, but I definitely was on the lighter side with the pilsner, hard lemonade, pickle tink, peach mango saison and something else...all worth a try. Schmohz is an incredibly accessible brewery and tap room; it would actually be the perfect place to bring your friend, coworker, or relative who thinks that craft breweries are pretentious. I was surprised when the bartender told me they did not do any kind of food; I assumed even though there was not a full kitchen they would have a few options for snacks. I just got a flight of beer, which I thought was mostly average (full-disclosure, I am somewhat of a beer snob). The bartender also did not come around to check on me for quite a while, which I found odd. Also, the building was not well lit, and had a dirty/dingy feel to it. My wife dropped by and picked up a six pack a couple weeks ago, having noticed the place from driving by a few times. We have gone back a few times now for more beer runs. It's just a basic bar - I think just popcorn - has a bit of a cool dive-y vibe. We've only been there to pick up beer to bring home, but as a bar this place seems like it would be a sweet place to hang out. We've had their Treasure Chest, Octoberfest, Pail Ale(yes it's spelled that way), and root beer so far. All awesome(and reasonably priced). read more

In a city where craft brewing and pretentiousness often go hand in hand Schmohz Brewing is a red solo cup in a frosted pint world. Refreshingly honest and true to who they are. A small brewery with some darn good beer. They don't have a restaurant, nor do they have hostesses awaiting with blinky pagers. Their taproom could best be described as "Your bachelor uncle's trailer". Everything has a relaxed, thrown together look. Clean, not fancy but adequate for their needs. The regulars bring an air of familiarity that makes you think that you could just as easily be hanging out in a living room watching the game with some buddies. They have an adjacent Bier Garden with outside tables and cornhole if you are up for a game. This atmosphere is not for everyone and you know what? They are ok with that. For convenience there's cold 6 packs to go or just fill a growler, its one of the most reasonably priced in town. They have a wide range of beer hoppy to no hops at all. We tried their Scottish Ale (smokey, thick and strong) their Amber (which was nice and more malt forward which is rare in this city) and my personal favorite their Zingiberene Ale, which is brewed with ginger in place of hops. Really refreshing for a 90 degree August day. We had great service and a fun time. read more

Walking in this place felt like "Cheers". It had a very humble atmosphere, most of the patrons seemed like regulars, and no hipsters were in sight. The beer selection was vast and prices were great. I tried one of the stouts while my sister drank a porter. We both agreed we were happy with our choices and would have had another if we weren't so tired. I recently asked around to see who in Grand Rapids has the best-house made root beer. Schmohz was the clear leader among everyone I polled. In fact, I'm not sure if there is any other place in GR that makes their own root beer onsite (msg me if I'm wrong). I stopped in to see if what I was hearing was true. I'm happy to report that yep- they do indeed some mighty fine root beer! Their normal beers are pretty darn good as well. Although I've known about their neighborhood brewery, tucked away off of 28th street on Patterson, for some time, I don't make a visit out often enough. In addition to their snappy and sweet house-made root beer, I really liked the Zingiberene Ale aka the 'Zing' . Made with ginger, it doesn't have any hops to it for a totally different taste. I can take it or leave it when it comes to hoppy beer, so this one appealed to me. The real game changer happened when I requested a root beer float. The bartender said yeah, sure she could do that for me....or she could make me a beer float, with their Bone Crusher Stout, their malty, chocolaty beer. Ice cream and beer?! Ice Cream IN beer?! Sold. The stout would've been a indulgent enough but with the creamy vanilla ice cream in it (you know the kind, from the big clear plastic tub someone's mom had a birthday party when you were a kid), it was simple, straight-up, to the point YUM-MY! It was a win/win - desert and an alcoholic beverage. Perfect way to end my recent visit. read more

Schmohz kind of reminds me of Cheers in its own way. They are their own little brewery offering a variety of unique beers and blends... and that's all they offer. Walking into the place, I felt like I was transported from the city of Grand Rapids to some bar located in the U.P. Not that that's a bad thing... just a point worth noting. In other, more positive words, the atmosphere is friendly, unassuming, and welcoming. As I've mentioned in other reviews, I'm no beer expert and I'm just as happy with a Miller as I am with those premium, unique brews. Maybe I should be ashamed, but I probably prefer the watered down Miller/Bud to the other stuff... hey, I'm an American! The beer here is definitely that fancier stuff so if you dig it, this is your place. They offered no less than 7 unique beers including a non-alcoholic root beer. You can even take kegs and growlers to-go. Service? Fast. Efficient. Friendly. No waiting at the bar for centuries to get your order taken. I hear they even offer samples if you can't decide on what you want. That's rockin'. At $3.75 for a glass of beer, the prices are definitely more than reasonable when you consider that going to the chain restaurant up the street and grabbing that aforementioned Miller will run you about the same. Food? Non-existent. Free popcorn and peanuts. You come here to drink and socialize with your buddies or the crowd that's already there. Or maybe play pinball, darts, or pool. I can see this place being an awesome after work hangout for the locals or your favorite "beer snob" (and I say that with nothing but the most loving affection). Just off of 28th Street and reminiscent of a VFW or your uncle's basement circa 1983, Schmohz is as casual as it gets. They don't serve food (other than the free popcorn machine) and they have a good selection of brews to try (and of course, they do flights/samplers). Belly up to the bar or sit at one of the tables in the spacious rec-room area. We were there on a Saturday afternoon, and I definitely felt like many of the other patrons knew each other. It seems like a spot for regulars -- in fact, it looks like they keep mugs on hand for repeat visitors. They have super-affordable prices on growlers and six-packs, though we did not partake. I walked in, looked to my left and saw a picture of a gnome. With that... I fell in love. This is a place where you should definitely belly up to the bar. It's got a copper top by the way. Super friendly people... I showed up as a newbie and despite that there mostly seemed to be regulars at the bar I didn't experience a cliche record scratching deja vu when I walked in the door. I went back a week later and the woman working the bar not only remembered me but also my name! How's that for service! I'm currently in love with the Zing... it's got no hops so it's not for everyone. I like that it's brewed with ginger. The hopknocker is a big seller too and with a 10% punch you can drink a couple and feel pretty good. Can't wait to go back for the pickle beer in May. They also refill ANY growler... Basically a dive bar craft brewery. My fiance and I came here as our second stop among Grand Rapids breweries as this was pretty close to our hotel. They had some pool and ping pong tables. A few TVs around the place. The beer was solid, nothing too exciting, but would drink all the beers I tasted again. I can't count the ways I love this place. First let me say I LOVE dives. Its can't just be a dumpy place it has to be a dive with charm. This place has all that and more. We walk in and the place looks a little sketchy. I sit at the bar, which is a way cool copper top with thousands of drink rings on it, and look at the menu. At the end of the bar are "Norm and Cliff" straight out of Cheers. Norm is drunk asking us the same questions over. I check in on Yelp and there is a check in bonus of free popcorn. I ask the bartender if I can redeem it and she about doubles over laughing, then tells Norm and Cliff we have a "free popcorn" coupon and they start to laugh. Come to find out there is free popcorn all the time. So the newbies just got tricked. A short bit later a couple with a child come in and Cliff proceeds to tell me how the lady of the couple has a beer named after her called the "Bra Buster". Norm asks what I'm drinking and I tell him "The Schwartz". To which he says "You come in here and order The Schwartz, you are brave". Then Norm and Cliff argue the merits of The Schwartz. Norm is lost by now and I look at the brewery in the back and Cliff, who doesn't work there, says "Hey do you want to see the back"? And proceeds to take us on a brewery tour. It was a lot of fun. Some strangers walk in off the street and the whole place treats you like family. A drunken dysfunctional family, but hey this is a dive brewery right? Oh I forgot to talk about the beer. The Schwartz was awesome and we walked away with a growler of some ginger infused beer, which I'm enjoying now. All were great. I wish they were closer to home or I'd stop in more often. read more

This is my favorite brewery in a while. If you're a needy YELP person or a slow ordering hipster, this is not the place for you. It has a local feel but is open to anyone. No food, but awesome beers. I love how they don't cater to west coast IPAs like 90% of breweries do, instead they focus on real brewing. The beers, brewed on the premises, range from Cream Ale to Stout, covering the variety with a Pale, 2 IPAs, an Amber, an ESB (my favorite), and seasonally a Scottish, a Porter, a Pilsner, a summer wheat, and an Old Ale.
