Sadly, I went to The Knickerbocker wearing jeans and not my baggy trousers. New Holland's place is right on Bridge Street, so it's right in the heart of things. For drinks, I had the Dragon's Milk S'mores on tap and the S'moregasm cocktail. For such similar drinks they were wildly different. At 11% ABV the beer was quite strong and I really didn't taste the "s'more" flavor. Meanwhile, the cocktail was super sweet as expected. New Holland has a solid line of beers so you can't really go wrong, but I don't think the S'more flavors worked on tap. Everybody debates whether pineapple should be on pizza but how about mustard?! So I had to try the seasonal Chicken Cordon Bleu pizza and it was delicious! It had cut up fried chicken, ham, and different types of cheese along with scallions and of course mustard. Somehow, they made this work! Service was also great despite the crowds but my only real negative was that they sneak a credit card charge onto the bill and hide the notice at the bottom of the menu. Ordered buffalo wings and double cheese burger. Start with the wings. Buffalo flavor was standard. 0 crisp on the wings, on top of that the chicken itself seemed to be lower quality. I could see after having a few beers these might have seemed good, but sober they were not it. Double cheese burger was smaller then I anticipated. Beef was well seasoned and had a good taste. Bun was generic. My real issue was the veggie on it. My lettuce had brown/black tips. My tomato was soggy. The pickles had no crunch to it, they were tough to bite through. Fries that came with the burger were also not my favorite. Thickness between wedge fried and steak fries, rough chopped every piece was different size so how could you cook them all consistently. No crisp to the fries, fairly greasy too. I wont be back. read more

We popped in here because we had to try out the top brewery in the downtown area we kept hearing about. Right when you walk in you feel like you've stepped back in time. I wanted to go to a nearby bar, but that place was too loud and too crowded. So instead, I walked over to New Holland. The place is quite manicured. It might seem like a tourist trap, to some. As you enter, you see the big dragon and a gift shop to the left. There was a host stand but I bypassed and went straight to the bar. A couple of gals were reading their books while eating and drinking, so I took a seat next to them. Figured it was a safe space since I was alone. It took awhile for either of the three bartenders to notice me. But I did end up getting served a glass of water and offered a drink menu. Another bar tender came by and answered my question about a beer flight. Apparently there is a a cocktail flight was well, but with limited options. I ordered my flight of beer. IPA is pretty standard for me, so I got the tangerine and the peach IPAs. The peach was my fave! I also got the Ichabod, which is their seasonal pumpkin ale, which I totally hated. Last, I got their limited offering of Blue Sunday sour, which was great! The bartender came by a few times- the gal next to me reading was his wife! So she and I chatted for at least an hour. I told her I had heard they make their own gin and I was interested in trying it. She flagged her husband, who gave me two small samples: one of blueberry and another of regular gin. Both were pretty good but the blueberry was by far, better. I looked online at total wine- they don't have it at home. Oh well. I'm telling you I was lucky to sit by the bartender's wife. I told her the ichabod was gross. So she flagged her husband and got the Mercilessly Malicious for me, which is a white sour, and I liked it. I'm super thankful that they traded out of of my beers at no cost! For the flights, you're not limited to four choices. You can have as many as you want, for the price of the 6ounce on the menu. 6 ounces is a lot, which is why I only ordered four. They offered me a food menu but I had already eaten. I should've at least looked, but I also heard from locals their food is mediocre at best. Overall, I had a great time sitting next to the bartender's wife and chatting with her about everything and anything. I ended up staying an hour longer than I would've otherwise. Seems like a fun place to grab a drink with friends. Lots of indoor, patio and "outdoor/indoor" seating. The outdoor/indoor is like Oktoberfest style picnic tables. The parking is non existent. You gotta find a spot on the street and the lots are pay for parking. It's tough to find a spot as there are a ton of restaurants and bars in the area so it's packed. Next time I'll check out the gift shop and possibly bring a bottle of their blueberry gin home. I'll also try something off of their cocktail menu. They've been making spirits since 2005. I only knew of their beer before my trip to Michigan. Their distillery is about 40 min away from this bar. read more

Having lots of parking in the area and reservations has made New Holland our pick for bringing anyone from out of town and it our go-to spot for a quick bite, beer, or just to hang out in their huge space on Bridge Street. I remember back when the GR Brewpub didn't have pinwheels like the Holland location and tried to serve golumpki. That menu has changed so much to the menu it is now, but our go-to favorites are the Dixie Luau pizza and the pepperoni pinwheels (tip: say no to the pizza sauce and 2x the chipotle ranch). As someone that opts for a fried chicken sandwich if nothing sounds good, I am not the biggest fan of their fried chicken sandwich. Sauce on it is just plain mayo which makes it flavorless and dry. Somehow the chicken on there is too big (I am not one to complain about more food) and the bun tastes like Sara Lee from the store. Opt for one of the sandwiches like the beef, the pulled pork, or the chicken wings. read more

This is a really large space! Cool vibe, I really liked it. I kind of love how tall the ceilings are (even from the outside looks really cool), and how when you walk in, the bar is on your right, with tall table tops next to the bar in case you are waiting for a table and just want to get a drink, but the bar is too full. We got the Dragon Pot Pie and the Beef Stroganoff. Both dishes were really good, but I liked the Beef Stroganoff more. The pasta was cooked el dente, and I loved how the sauce was not too overpowering. The beef was quite tender and, well, it was overall a very solid dish! And quite plentiful, too. This is a dish I'd get again. The Dragon Pot Pie was really good as well but was just a little too salty for my taste. I couldn't really finish it because it was just a little too salty (my friend had no problem with it though). I have to say, the crust was where it shined. Oh my. The puff pastry on top was GOOD. It had just the right amount of crunch on the outside of the pastry, but underneath the slightly hard baked exterior was soft. The texture was really great. Overall, great experience and very cool hang out place! There is street parking on Bridge Street and on streets perpendicular to Bridge Street. This brewery is a short walk from the convention center and my group was so surprised with the roomy space considering its downtown. It has good vibes with both indoor and outdoor seating and a more industrial feel. We sampled many different food and drink items and all of their summer drinks were DELICIOUS! We had a very confusing experience at the host stand on Saturday, April 18. We arrived around 4:50 PM and were told there was a 2.5-hour wait, even though the restaurant appeared mostly empty. That didn't seem to add up, so we checked the bar area but couldn't find any available seating. As we waited, we noticed several other parties--including couples--come in after us and get seated right away. I went back to the host stand to better understand what was going on and heard the hostess tell another couple they could be seated as long as they were finished by 7 PM. When I approached again and explained we were also a party of two, she told us we'd need to be done by 6:45, and the interaction came across as abrupt. It was frustrating because if that option had been communicated to us initially, we would have gladly accepted and adjusted our timing. I REALLY really wanted to love our experience here but I just didn't. Our server was extremely slow and inattentive(on an extremely not-busy late afternoon). Between three of us, we decided to order a carnivore pizza and a pastrami sandwich. The pizza was good, but EXTREMELY salty (we figured out later it was the sausage which we really liked, but it was very salty. My husband likes that there was not a ton of sauce on the pizza. Brewing gone Boujiee! Brewery #264 I'm a big fan of New Holland's Dragon's Milk stouts which you can find all over the country. We stopped in while brewery hopping around Grand Rapids just looking for some grub and a flight. While there is no dress code per se this place felt much more upscale than a standard brewing. I felt under dressed in my basic White suburban dad attire, you know ball cap, cargo shorts and t-shirt. (At least my sneaker game is better than the all white New Balance) Anyway, we were seated immediately at a 2 top on a Saturday despite the place being pretty busy. I ordered an El Jefe Cubano. This is not a standard Cuban sandwich, instead of thin sliced pork there is pork belly. It gives it a different texture but it was still good but again different. On my beer flight I got a Mad Hatter (Midwestern IPA) Peach Space Machine (Hazy IPA) and 2 different Dragon's Milks (S'mores and a Vanilla Chai). The IPA's were solid but the stars are the stouts. Both phenomenal but the S'mores was like having dessert by a campfire. Phenomenal. They also have a big gift shop onsite that sells the usual t-shirts, stickers, beer and such but also sells locally distilled spirits and other cool items. To be honest Steve and I did not detect the Oatmeal Cookie aspect all that much. It was still a good beer but we mostly tasted just the barrel aged treatment. But that's for you and your own tastebuds to decide if you can find the cookie part to this beer. According to Untappd flavor features to look for are Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, Cookie and Raisins. Again, we just tasted the boozy feature with this beer but if you can detect those flavor features then good job! read more

We were given water & a moment to look over the menu. We'd really stopped by for a couple of brews on a whim from a wonderful stop across the street. We each selected a beer under the hops passport BOGO. Though staff acknowledged the passport and stand, the discount wasn't applied & we had to point it out. We passed on food, as we weren't all that hungry and, more importantly, our wait staff didn't show back up until both glasses were empty. As for the beer. I had the dark & felt it had a crayon flavor that I found off-putting, & I love dark beers/ adore nitro brews. As a non-IPA drinker, I preferred the double IPA. I'm not sure what that means... was the IPA bad since I preferred it? I just dunno. Anywho, there are multiple New Holland stops in the book that we won't be using. This was a 1 and done for us. We started with the Buffalo cauliflower that was good and not too spicy and the pretzel app. Instead of melted cheese to dip the pretzel they give you a cheese spread. The fried chicken sandwich was good with homemade French fries. My friends had the grilled cheese with tomato fondue and the pulled pork sandwich. We sat on their patio area and it is such a nice spot and really adds alot of tables to their restaurant. It was the perfect weather but even if we were a chilly they had outdoor heaters. I had the passion blaster for my beer which is a rose ale w/ passion fruit and raspberry. SO tasty. I love fruity beers so this was perfect. The 16oz was $6 which I felt was pretty fairly priced and honestly cheap! For the meal I had the Midwest Cubano and was able to choose between fries and veggies. I thought it was kinda weird that they serve raw veggies instead of a cooked veggies option but I still chose that as it seemed like a good fresh option to put next to the hot sandwich! The sandwich was really good. I liked that it was served on a pretzel bun and overall it was tasty and I'm glad I ordered it. We just love New Holland. Originally learning of it in Holland, we are so grateful for the GR location. It's spacious, beautiful, and the servers have always been top notch. Today they accidentally sent an incorrect sandwich, caught their own mistake and let us keep both. Let's be honest, we come here for the pepperoni pinwheels but we stay for everything else. If you're going to invade Beer City, you better bring your A game, and I have to say I think New Holland did a great job with this out post in Grand Rapids. The feel of the Knickerbocker is completely different than the pub in Downtown New Holland. Where the pub has comf, cozy feel to it, the Knick comes in with modern designs and sharp clean lines. They replace local charm with big city flair. If you're a fan of the beers, which I am, I think it would be difficult to have a bad time here. So many choices along with great cocktails from their own distillery and staff that does a great job taking care of the customers. I have never had a chance to eat here, but I will say the food looks tremendous and I'm looking forward to sampling it. Either way great place to meet friends for drinks or a meal. read more

Stopped in before a concert in mid October! Love that this place is so big because you rarely have to wait or worry if you'll be able to get in... and the food and atmosphere is fabulous! My only knock this time was the pesto grilled cheese (which I've gotten before because it's an amazing combination of flavors) was a little too crusty/ crispy this time around the edges it actually hurt to bite down -really had to hope the tomatoe basil softened it some. But the less crusty part did still give that great flavor. My wife's chicken sandwich has alot of seasoning that I really enjoyed (from a bite she shared) and she did too but it was a little hot for her so heads up (I however love heat!). And we started with the pinwheels which is a staple here: like you gotta try em. Service was fine too though I think our waitress may have had some issues hearing us, but she was nice and no earth shattering mixups so no big deal. Avoid any and all meat items, especially smoked. I think their meat dishes are prepared by bitter vegans. The pork belly on the Elote Mac was like jerky. I'm not even sure if it was pork belly. So dry and chewy, like sun-baked, pancaked roadkill. Seriously, it was like dehydrated meat. The last time I ate here I had the smoked chicken wings, which were equally dry and buried under a mountain of some weird powder seasoning. So today's experience was also a zero because we ordered food from the bar to eat at a nearby high top, which means we paid and tipped (generously) with the order before getting the food. I returned to the bar to give feedback and they said " oh, that's coming off the menu. Would you like a free drink?" My response was "Well, I just paid a lot, tipped generously and we're done here, so no." This has been a reliable go-to place for me since it opened. I can't count the number of times I've been here and had good food and service bit with my last two visits a disappointment and little to no remediation from the staff, this is no longer a reliable go-to place for me. read more
