My wife and i were in town and decided to try this restaurant. I had been there with her a few years back. We got there and it was fairly busy which is usually a good sign at an establishment. We made our way to the hostess station and were quickly seated. We placed our drink orders, Coke for my wife and for myself sweet tea. The first thing I noticed was my tea. It was sweet but it had this strange sugar substitute flavor to it which I can only compare to some of the tea you might buy at your local quick stop. We started looking over the menu and my wife quickly decided on Beef Manhattan. I waffled back and forth between their multiple selections of German sausages and a smoked hickory "Pork Chop" with German fries and sweet sour kraut. I finally decided on the "Pork Chop" and upgraded from a tossed salad to the soup and salad bar. Our order was placed and we waited. A waitress came by and offered to refill. I changed mine to an unsweetened tea which tasted better and didn't leave that aftertaste in my mouth. I went and visited the salad bar which had plenty of fresh salad and condiments and what appeared to be pickled mackerel which I tried. I returned to the table and enjoyed my salad. The mackerel was giod. As I was enjoying it the waitress came back and informed my wife she would have to change her order due to the fact they were out of the handmade mashed potatoes required for her dish. So my wife decided to get the same "Porckchop" dish that I ordered but changed the fries and kraut to applesauce. Our food arrived fairly quickly. As they set it on the table I thought there had been a misunderstanding. I was sure we had ordered "Pork Chops". What we had in front of us were each one piece of sliced bone in ham which appeared more cooked than fried. I started to protest but my wife shut me off because she realized what their idea of a "Pork Chop" was before I did. Where I come from a "Pork Chop" is about a 3/4" bone in piece of meat which is.usually fried or grilled. And in case you are curious look up where pork chops and ham are located on a pig. Lets just say real "Pork Chops" come from the upper East Side and ham lives in the lower east side. The dissapointment I felt could only be described as being told you were going to be served a homemade strawberry sponge cake and receiving a Twinkie smeared with some strawberry jam. We proceeded to eat our meal. It would have been ok if we had been at one of those national cafeteria chains but for but what we paid for it we were dissapointed. On a positive note the German fries and sweet saurkraut were delicous. Also our waitress though very sweet kept disappearing. She dropped our bill off and disappeared. Another waitress saw that we had been abandoned and took my credit card and ran and then another waitress brought it back for me to sign. Dont get me wrong, the food was ok, the restaurant was clean, the atmosphere was good and the help was friendly but in summary if high priced average food is what you're looking for then this is the place. read more

Every few years we stop to enjoy German food that is really good with a dark doublebock of choice. It is getting harder to finish the meal because its always filling and pleantiful. We learned that the very special cabbage soup is only available on some Saturdays, we were lucky to have found it and remember it fondly from years ago. I lived my whole life in Jasper, and somehow had never been to The Schnitz. I finally went, and was very excited due to how much it gets raved about around here. I was very, very disappointed. The ambiance was nothing special, the tables felt sticky, and the food was so overpriced for what it was. I was very unimpressed with the food. It very much resembled cafeteria food from middle school. With that said, I stole a bite of a pork chop that my friend had ordered, and it was great. But everything else I've had from there has been less than satisfactory. read more

We've been here many times over the years and have never been disappointed. The schnitzel and the goulash over spaetzel are outstanding as is the knackwurst. Incredible fried German potatoes. I have wanted to try the Schnitzelbank for as long as I can remember. Well I finally got the opportunity to! My husband works out of town quite a lot and they do a lot of work in Jasper Indiana in particular. Normally this is not an overnight trip for him however this time he ended up needing to stay for several days in a row. His hotel just happened to be just across from the Schnitzelbank so when he called and wanted to know if I would be willing to drive the 90 minutes up to visit him and finally try out the Schnitzelbank I couldn't say no! I am particularly fond of German food so I was very excited to try out some of their specialties. I started with a nice blonde beer and their salad bar. The beer was very good and I would definitely have the same one again if I am able to go back. The salad bar was very interesting. In a great way. I was very impressed with the multitude of homemade salads that were available and all of the ones I tried were delicious though since they weren't labeled I can't necessarily tell you what they all were. I also loved the huge hunk of blue cheese that was available to slice from since that's a favorite of mine. The salad toppings themselves while good were maybe a little bit lacking (mostly just cheese, bacon, egg and croutons) but the other choices made up for that in my opinion. For my meal I had the wurst platter and they were all excellent. I also enjoyed the fried potatoes and sauerkraut that came with them. I also got to try my husbands spätzle and it was awesome. My only real regret is that I had no room for dessert! I did think the prices were a tad steep but overall it was a very good meal and I would eat at the Schnitzelbank again! read more

Had the sausage platter with mashed potatoes. It was pretty average fair for an above average price which is why I'm rating 2 stars. I did like their take on the spicy mustard. While this visit only received 2 stars I may return again to try the much heralded salad bar. read more

After years of watching my parents make the drive to spend their Anniversary here, I finally made the drive myself, in their memory. We were greeted and seated by friendly staff and waited on by just as wonderful of a waitress. The food portions were huge and everything was delicious. Went here once and I'll never give them a second chance. I started my order by explaining that I have a severe milk allergy. I was assured I could dine there and there would be no problems with cross-contamination. I get my dish & the my vegetables are saturated in butter. I called the waitress over to ask her if it was indeed butter & to remind of her of my allergy. Having only had German once before I can't comment on the authenticity. However our food was excellent. I had the wurst platter and hubby had the 2 inch pork chop(which is only available a day to two a week). We opted to have the salad bar. It was around $60 but we each had enough leftovers for another meal. Waitress was super friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was great, decorated like a German place-as it should be. Their extensive beer and wine list has something for everyone, the food is wonderful, and the little shop has all sorts of German goodies that are hard to find elsewhere. The food is just OK. It is fairly authentic German food. We have been several times. Often, some of the dishes are really loaded with grease, the sausages are especially greasy. The only standout food is the kraut ball appetizer - but they are WAY overpriced, as is most of the menu. The atmosphere is nice and German, but boarders on touristy. The wait staff are somewhere between apathetic and rude. It is not good service! Maybe their lederhosen are bunched up and cutting off critical circulation? There was a time when this place was great, that time has passed. Yes it is a local institution. Yes it can be a fun place to eat and drink. But, you really need to expect that you will pay more than it is worth and receive poor table service while you are there. Go once to say you have been there, then find a nice German restaurant that actually cares if you come back. read more

A must next time you happen through Jasper... I find the German food pretty authentic and the fact that you can get a real German bier on draft is even a treat! People enjoy the large salad bar. After reading all the great reviews. On May 17th, 2018. We dicided to drive the 45 minutes from French Lick. Arrived 1pm. I'll tell ya what. Beside going threw everything. I got the sampler. The meat was scare. The gravy was salty. The dumplings were wet and a little less then room temp. in the middle. The potatoe pancakes burnt around the edges. So on the list can go. Thought it might have been Me being a bad mood. So I didn't mention anything. Then my buddy after we left felt the same about the food and cooking. Over all the cooking was horrible, the quality was poor. The portions were meager for the $35 that I spent for myself. I know German food growing up. I could compare this meal to a nursing home. Tried to go in for lunch Saturday, wanting to take my wife and daughter while we were in town visiting family. The hostess was very rude, like we were a huge inconvenience. She pointed to a table in back and said "you can sit there" and when I asked about a high chair she said "don't have one for you now" and turned away to talk to another staff member. When I interrupted to ask how long it would be for a high chair she turned to me, annoyed, and said "we have a shower going on with a lot kids and they are using everything so it will be awhile" then turned away again. No concern if we stayed or went, no sorry for inconvenience, she couldn't even be bothered to look at us. We walked out. It is sad that they seem to think they are so big they no longer have to treat their customers with respect. I won't be returning to inconvenience them again with our presence or outrageous request for a high chair. read more

This is a Jasper institution, but I think they're coasting a bit on reputation. If you're in town and just want a drink this is hands-down the place to go. Lots of beers on tap, including German and Czech varieties! I used to live in the Czech Republic so I really appreciate that, though it also means that I can be a bit picky about "German" food. The menu can be hit or miss. I do love the Wurst platter, I understand they get their wurst from a local butcher and the accompanying sauerkraut and hot mustard is divine. Their other German choices are so so. Not quite worth the price tag I think. The prime rib is definitely not "prime." The fried chicken is good too (though as I put on another area restaurant review, this is Southern Indiana and if you can't make good fried chicken here get out of the restaurant business). I do enjoy the salad bar. The variety is fairly extensive and you get some local specialties like pickled herring and Jasper Bakery bread. Don't order the Apple Strudel if you like authentic German strudel though. It's more like a walnut coconut apple cobbler thingy. The staff is very friendly, decked out in their German outfits and the décor is both German and Southern Indiana at the same time which I appreciate. If you frequent Jasper you should go at least once. 3 1/2 stars. read more

We drove for 1 1/2 hours just to eat here because of the reviews. We were very disappointed with the service and food. Since they were not busy, we were seated right away. We were seated in a narrow room with seven tables. Only two of the tables were occupied. One table was waiting for their food and the other was about finished. We waited patiently for the waitress to appear. She made eye contact and walked right pass us without a comment. About five to seven minutes later, two more parties arrived and were seated in the same section. Within a few minutes, both tables were waited on by the same waitress we saw earlier. My husband and I figured this must not be our waitress since we had been there some time before the other two tables had arrived. The same waitress came back awhile longer and said, "Can I help you?" We placed our order with no substitutions or special requests. It was some time before our salad arrived. Shortly afterwards the fried chicken arrived, but I had only one piece of chicken and had ordered two pieces. The waitress told me that they owed me a piece of chicken and they were frying it right now. She made no apology for the mistake. We were just about finished with our meal and here came the chicken. I was still hungry so I decided to eat the wing they just brought. The wing was raw inside. The meat was still pink and rubbery. When I finally got the attention of our waitress, she said that she knew it was undercooked because the "wing fryer" tried to hurry it. I told her to just take it back and take it off our bill. Again she offered no apology or even a friendly gesture. We sat there a long time waiting for our bill. My husband had his card on the table ready to pay and attempted to get her attention numerous times. After some time, the older lady who seated us, saw how we had been waiting a long time for our waitress and went up to our waitress and pointed us out. We were never so glad to get out of a place. excellent food. amazing salad buffet. my first time here, even though i'm somewhat of a local (evansville in). the staff was excellent. i have family in jasper but was referred to this place mainly by Santa Claus Land (holiday world now). so happy i finally made it. i drove here from louisville on my way home to evansville. too bad i live in LA now, can't come back too often. highly recommend this place, especially if you like a long country drive. read more

First off, I lived in Germany for 5 years so I was looking forward to visiting here. We started with the German Sampler appetizer which was very good (mini wurst/kraut balls/reuben rolls/german pretzel/potato pancakes). The spicy horseradish mustard is great--really cleared my sinuses! For main course we both had the German Sampler Platter and both chose Goulash, Sauerbraten & Weinerschnitzel. My original intent was to hopefully have a schnitzel in one of the sauces I used to eat in Germany (rahm, jaeger, or zigeuner), but they have none, so I was kind of disappointed. The good: The salad was fine, german fries were good, and the schnitzel was very good. The bad: The sauerbraten was extremely dry. The taste was good, however. I was wondering since we were there later in the evening if it just dried out. I've never had sauerbraten before and I find it hard to believe it should be that dry. Same for the goulash meat. The goulash is served with spaetzle, a traditional German noodle that I've had many, many times. The goulash was okay if a bit salty. I was more used to a soup-type golash than having it served over noodles. Red cabbage side was okay. So we were split on the food: Good appetizer, mediocre main dish. Service was adequate. We had quite a bit of wait between times the server came to our table. We actually had another server come over to tell us our appetizer would be out soon. After a long day of traveling, we were both kind of disappointed. I did measure this against the jaegerschnitzel, spaetzle and red cabbage I had at the Gerst Haus in Evansville which was very, very good. I'm not sure I'd go back, but I had to try it. read more

A friendly and smart staff is a big plus in my book and this place has one. Really wanted to give them a "Yay," however, the flavor of the food is inconsistent with the hype. Items ordered: potato salad, German fries, potato glaze, beef rolladen and mini braztel sandwich. Please keep in mind I'm not a German cuisine fan or seek it out but love to get my beef and carb on when possible! Potato glaze dumpling with gravy was *delicious* but didn't like how the menu says filled with bread crumbs and then seeing a crouton in the middle. German fries were *great*...imagine hash browns kicked up a few notches with just the right amount of butter and mild herbs. The potato salad was nice and a good amount/cut of bacon added to it. The steak on the beef was tender/tasty but the filling had *way* too many onions...and I'm a fan of onions! The brat was nice but if you've had a good brat from a butcher there is nothing to "wow" you about the one they are serving. Also, the kraut is very sour and the mustard is too sweet for my tastes. A nice surprise was the blue cheese dressing that came with my salad...slightly seasoned and thick enough to use a fork is the bomb in my eyes. Overall a safe bet to wine and dine at. read more

My wife & I recently stayed at the Hampton Inn in Jasper which is probably the best Hampton Inn in the country. The owner of the hotel also owns the Schnitzelbank Restaurant. We found the restaurant food was great but a little on the expensive side. The service was also great. We sat next to the salad bar and it was tended every two to three minutes with refills and keeping it clean. It was a Friday evening and the place was busy with locals as well as folks from the hotel. The girl at the hotel front desk gave us some drink coupons to use. On the way out the hostess showed us the owners family portrait with the kids in lederhosen and gave us a quick history lesson. I highly recommend this restaurant and its authentic German food. read more

Just plain good. The salad bar has old fashioned favorites, with a good selection of vegetables. Their turnip kraut is memorable, as is their goulash. My husband always has their roast beef Great dark bread, which is sometimes hard to come by. I just this restaurant were closer. Great place, and nice, helpful servers. read more
