Amazing home style food! With a super friendly staff that offered great service. I wasn't surprised to see that place was really popular with locals as it had a cozy ambiance with nice bathrooms . My only downside was that the menu did not communicate the fact the sausage from the German plate would be somewhat spicy due to it having black pepper in it but I'm not to bothered by that, I should have figured it would have been like that since it's home made. For 18.95 I had the best pork loin I've ever had in a mushroom gravy, fried chicken, excellent Salisbury steak, and the mashed potatoes were real, homemade, buttery mashed potatoes. Salad, excellent green beans, cauliflower, carrots, corn, bread and dessert and salad bar. It was insanely fresh and good. I feel the quality, freshness and flavor of the food is top notch. Delicious German and Southern food with quick and friendly service. Middle of the restaurant features a buffet and salad bar with a giant wedge of Colby as its centerpiece. Buffet looked OK, but we were happy with our decision to order off the menu instead. I got the wiener schnitzel, a magnificently large pork cutlet pounded thin and fried to a golden brown. Go all-out German and choose the German potatoes to go with the included red cabbage. My companion got the liver and onions - also a tremendous portion and full of livery flavor. Both meals included a trip to the salad bar, where I didn't pass up an opportunity to grab a hunk of the Colby. Apparently they have pie by the slice too, but we were too stuffed to think about it. We stopped again and got lunch this time around. No disappointment. There was brisket, barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, greenbeans, carrots, broccoli, yeast rolls, seafood chowder, and dessert. The barbecue chicken was delicious also with the brisket. The Mac and cheese was descent. The Green beans were bland even though cooked with onion and bacon bits. The carrots and corn I can't complain. The broccoli was good considering it was cooked with butter. They had some sort of chicken cassarol but it wasn't good. The seafood chowder was a little conflicting as you see potatoes and think of potato soup but there's actually pieces of shrimp and it tastes like seafood. I didn't mind it. Even though it was different. I had a dessert but I dont even know what it was. It had a pie crust and some sort of cream filling but it was actually really good. I wish it would have stated what it was. I was kind of shocked of the price this time around versus their breakfast price. Waiter was really nice and very attentive. He ordered the fried okra, buttermilk battered French fries, broccoli, mash potatoes and some kinda veggie mash. I ordered chicken fried steak, corn and mash potatoes. The food is was great. As was our server, Taylor. However, the floor was very slippery and I nearly fell a few times. Apparently the slipperiness is caused by the humidity. There were no warning signs, and no non-slip rugs. I am recovering from spinal surgery and the last thing I need is a fall. There is a cute area in the front where you can purchase items such as preserves, candy, etc. I picked up ajar of Candied Jalapeños. I asked the cashier if they tasted good. She said she had never tasted any of those things because they weren't Schobel's. I almost felt guilty for buying based on her attitude. I did purchase the jalapeños, a jar of Apple butter, and a couple other preserves as well as some dark chocolate covered pecans. Again, the food was delicious. read more

Boy, has this place gone down hill. Food was terrible, service even worse. And the place was filthy. Dont know where the wheel fell off on this place? I know it's kinda a destination spot. But I can understand why. The place needs a deep cleaning, staff need training or firing and for God's sake learn how to cook home cooking properly. I live here and we won't go back. Not only does it come with salad , but they have hot veggies, mashed potatoes, fried chicken a long with several other types of meat. My favorite was the candied yams. All home cooked turns of foods. There were green beans, sautéed cabbage, corn and mashed potatoes for the warm sides and a ton of cold and salad options. Traveling home from San Antonio, my hubby and I decided a really good burger sounded good and we almost went to Whataburger for convenience, but decided we'd try Schobels. They have this really great buffet, but I really wanted a burger. After watching all the trips to the buffet by those around us, I wondered if we'd regret our decision. NOPE!! This burger was so thick and juicy and seasoned just right. All the veggies were super fresh. The bun was soft and the added bacon was crispy. At the suggestion of the waitress I got the buttermilk coated fries. I mean, obviously there's no diet plan here so why not bread the fries!?? Yummo. Super crispy. After we started eating I noticed all this buffet people around us were eyeballing our burgers with some possible regret. If you're nearby and want a really good burger, skip the buffet line.
