I discovered this restaurant on my return home from San Antonio. We stopped for breakfast, and it was delicious. It's a good home style cooking type of place. I'm a huge fan of Eggs Benedict, and they have a variety of different styles to choose from. I had the Drew: poached egg, spinach and diced tomatoes on an English muffin with hollandaise sauce. After breakfast they serve a buffet and the food looked good. I didn't try it but family of mine who showed up later than I did said it was delicious. read more

We were traveling through Texas and stopped here for lunch. The server came and asked us what we wanted to drink and disappeared for 20 minutes. She came back and asked us for our order. We gave it to her and she disappeared again. 15 minutes later she brought part of our food and went away again. I reminded her about my cup of soup and our tea. we had nearly finished the food she brought, with nothing to drink. We got out tea after being in the restaurant for 40 minutes. The food was not good. my husband's burger was dry and the bun burned. my chicken soup had a bone in it. I also had fried green tomatoes that were cooked in dirty grease and tasted awful. We could not get our bill. we waited for a while and finally went to the counter. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

This was a really nice diner! The food was good. We had the chicken fried steak dinner. The batter was nice and flakey with white gravy and fresh green beans with tender bacon. It came with a salad bar, which all things on the bar were fresh! From bean salad, carrots, and raisins, potato salad, macaroni salad, boiled chopped eggs, too much to mention, several dressings. We were in Columbus April 6-8 for the eclipse, traveling to Hill Country. We went to Schobel's hoping for a decent meal. It looks like a typical family style restaurant, a little dated, but clean. Salad bar caught our eye. My husband ordered the pan seared catfish with broccoli and the salad bar. I ordered the flounder with almonds with squash, yellow and zucchini and salad bar. My husband said catfish was not great. My flounder was much better but the squash was just plain weird. I expected sit to be steamed or sautéed, instead it was mushy, and mixed with, I honestly don't know what it was! Awful! Salad bar was standard fair. Server was a sweet older lady and the young lady that checked us out was nice. There were a group of sheriffs eating dinner and a group of people, photographers, I believe, from France. I can only imagine what they thought of the food. It wasn't the worst food but certainly would not go out of my way to eat there again. read more

Very good food! We stopped in Columbus to meet some family and had a good selection of the menu between the wraps and chicken fried steak, all of which was very good and high quality. There is a buffet of standard favorites and sides along with a generous salad bar included with your meal. All the ingredients were fresh and it showed! Interesting place and not in a good way. I say interesting because I started to read the other 1, 2 and 3 star reviews especially the 1 star. We had the very same experience! Waited at least 20 mins to get asked or noticed by wait staff when tables after us received attention. Kinda get the feeling it was because we were the only Hispanic table for breakfast...long wait time, the ugly looks we got and not getting what we asked for. I told my parents for us to get up and leave but they wanted to eat here. Never again. I come here often (1st time to sit and eat) and shop their jellies, pickled stuff, pies, etc with no issue, but after today I will NEVER patronize this business again!!! The billboard with the word PIE drew us in from the highway. It was Saturday night about 5:30 pm and the buffet was fresh and inviting. Perfectly cooked vegetables that you don't see in restaurants very often anymore--carrots, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, broccoli, greens. There were lots of meat options too--fried pork chops, smothered pork chops, King Ranch Chicken, and meatloaf. The salad bar was also excellent and fresh. There were lots of dessert options. My kids liked the pink cake and chocolate cake. The star of the desserts was the buttermilk pie. My kid ate two pieces. The prices were reasonable. An adult buffet was $11.99 and kids $6.99. The kid menu prices are also very reasonable. Great service and friendly people. The server offered us to go cups, which was appreciated. The restrooms and restaurant were clean and well kept. Schobel's is a German inspired restaurant with a homey vibe. Schobel's is a great place to go with family. It feels like being home when you walk into the restaurant. You are greeted by the host, also a variety of candies and jars of homemade goodies. We went with my husband's grandparents and we all did the buffet option. There was salad then the main protein choices were meatloaf, rollbraten and fried chicken and so many different types of sides and veggies. They include dessert with the buffet option but we were stuffed. I did forget to take pictures tho but I do highly recommend this place. read more

We had a mini family reunion in Eagle Lake today. Eleven of us met in Columbus, at Schobel's for lunch. The restaurant is very nice. Bathrooms are very clean. Staff is super friendly and helpful. They accommodated our large party of 11 very easily. We all had the buffet. We started with salad. The salad items were numerous and fresh. For lunch, fried chicken was an option for most of us. I got steamed broccoli, creamed cauliflower, mashed potatoes, carrots and a jalapeño corn muffin. Everything was perfectly cooked. Almost all of us had pie for dessert. Yum! Staff kept our iced tea and drinks refilled. This is a great place to eat. Highly recommend Schobel's. read more

Think Buttermilk pie! If you don't want the buffet, there are great choices on the menu. Really good German entrées. The breakfast menu has favorites from NFL greats Matt, Bo, and Aaron Schobel. You can build your own breakfast or choose a standard favorite. Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, there is a breakfast buffet. They have the best biscuits and gravy. We love the omelets and the Buttermilk pancakes. Restaurant is beautiful. Great portraits of the town and a few of the Schobel family. The waitstaff are awesome. They can answer questions about local attractions and where to find the locale of some of the subjects in the portraits. The entrance/lobby area has lots of canned goodies, dessert goodies in the display cooler by Checkout. There is a large family restroom off of the main dining area, and 8 restrooms just off the lobby. Ask about the homemade pies to order! Their salad bar is awesome and . . . that block of cheese: it really takes you back to the old country. 12pm When we pulled up lot looked packed but had plenty of parking all around bldg. When you walk in it reminds you of a Cracker Barrel. Seated right away and staff was friendly and helpful. Menu was on a clipboard and it was 3 separate pieces of paper. Odd but different and the waitress was very helpful answering questions. Had plenty of different foods but menu to spread out and not focused just on one type/version of food. What I mean is that they had Cajun to American to seafood to others like German food. So it's like a jack of all trades master of none. I ordered chicken fried steak and fried okra and it came with a side salad very good fresh and hand battered. Wife order pot roast, was very bland no flavor or seasoning. Had to add a lot salt and pepper to make is decent. Meat was shredded and because of that is was dry. instead of a large piece of roast or large chunks so meat can stay moist and tender. Over all not bad, friendly and helpful staff, older bldg but clean and quiet. It does seem to have an older clientele and that could explain the pot roast lack of seasoning. Sorta like what you see at a Lubys. I would return but probably do the burger since ground on site and fresh or the club sandwich. It's always best to try 2-3 visits before making a final decision on a restaurant. read more
