Outstanding! Wow -- I stopped in before heading to a concert last night, and what a great find. The restaurant was busy, the drinks were flowing, and the brats were coming in hot! I had the best bratwurst I've had in a long time. It was cooked perfectly, and the bread it was served on was a 10/10. It was a soft bun, but almost more like a slice of bread -- different, but absolutely fantastic. Add the sauerkraut and mustard, and the flavors came together perfectly. I paired it with a non-alcoholic beer, which was also great. The location couldn't be better if you're headed to a University of Texas at Austin football game or an event at the Moody Center. It's right across from both, making it a perfect pre-game or pre-concert spot. Outdoor patio was great to sit and relax as well. Definitely coming back -- the food alone is worth it! read more

I will begin by acknowledging this is an Austin and UT institution. A common place Austin folks have enjoyed for generations. It's really cool at those times, although the amount of people during game day can be overwhelming. I've been a number of times over the years. The food has always been okay, not great. This last time, I ordered the pastrami sandwich, no aioli. The sandwich came dry. Thankfully I had asked for some mustard for my waffle fries. It was supposed to be on a brioche bun, or maybe I mistook the two pieces of white bread I got as something less than they were. It's supposed to have brie on it, and maybe the heat evaporated it all into the pastrami? The house made pastrami itself was very good. My daughter had the green chile and cheddar sausage and commented that the bun was pretty much a piece of Texas toast. We did have an excellent pretzel and the green goddess salad was capable of being split among three of us. These things make me think I just picked the wrong thing. For all the times I've been to Scholz's, I haven't picked the right thing that makes me excited to go back to eat. read more

We stopped in for a quick bite before a show Friday evening. I wasn't super hungry, so just got the Kartofelpopper (potato pancakes) and husband ordered Beef tips with Spaetzle & beer. He enjoyed his meal, but mine was a bit disappointing. These "pancakes" were 3".. "fried flat tater-tots " for lack of better description. Definitely not Potato pancakes. I probably have not been to Scholz' Garten in over twenty years. I think it used to be called Scholz Beer Garten. It has been so long ago they had a dirt floor out in the beer garden. I agonized over which shoes to wear that I did not mind getting a lot of dirt on. The beer garden has been cemented and bricked. Wow, I was totally amazed to see the transformation. I was invited to a reception by a business partner. The reception included open bar and bites. There was a number of food items available for consumption all prepared by Scholz Garden staff. That is where my interest lay as it was early evening. I started off with chips and spinach dip...quite tasty. I moved on to the chicken wings, which were outstanding. They tasted as if they were slow smoked. One word for the wings...delicious! I got a couple of brisket sliders. Not a huge fan of beef, but thought I would give it a whirl. The brisket was fork cutting soft. Really enjoyed the brisket...opted out of the bun. They had some healthy options, which I completely avoided. The meal ended with three desserts - pretzel bread budding, German chocolate cake and assorted pound cakes. The standout was definitely the pretzel bread pudding. Will be hitting the gym hard today... There was complimentary valet, which was nice. Parking downtown can sometimes be quite scary. A huge shoutout for having anti-bacterial solution out in the beer garden. For a resident, germaphobe it totally made my day. It's a pretty cool place, and within stumbling distance of the UT stadium. It was raining when I was there, so I spent all of my time inside the bar. The inside is spacious, but also cozy at the same time. It has a dark vibe to it with dark woods and a dark wooden bar. I liked the vibe. The outside area looks like a pretty fun biergarten - I'll have to check it out again when they have something going on. It was a weekday when I was there, so there weren't a lot of customers, but the staff were friendly and helpful. The beer selection is really good. Obviously, plenty of German selections, but they also have a decent amount of regional Texas beers on tap and in cans. Other than the great beer selection, I had the potato pancakes. You know, if you are an out of towner, this place is worth a visit. Not only is it historical, but it offers an authentic Texas charm with a German influence. It's very old and very rustic, but don't let that fool you - the food is quite good! It's so much better than it used to be decades ago. The Wienerschnitzel is amazing, incredibly tender and flavorful. Like, I'm actually going back again for two nights in a row kind of good. Here is what we had last night - beef tips, Wienerschnitzel burger, the traditional, wiener, schnitzel plate, and an incredibly moist and delicious pretzel. It was huge, plenty for 3-4 people. We had a fun lunch at Scholz Biergarten. They claim it's the oldest biergarten, not just in the U.S., but in North America -- founded in 1866. It may actually be true. We ate outside in the actual courtyard. It is not the most beautiful place and don't let the "garten" fool you. It's not a garden. A tip of the hat to our waiter Cassie, who graduates from UT in May. The menu is very traditional German food. Schnitzel. Bratwurst. Sauerkraut. Jaegerschnitzel. And huge Bavarian pretzels with mustard and two dipping sauces. And of course a huge selection of German beers. We split a pretzel ("big enough for 2-4 people" says the menu), six smoked chicken wings and a huge salad. Filling and tasty. Dark inside! But I liked it. Bar seating, bar area has booths and tables as well. A few step down areas so not sure about fully accessible for handicapped/wheelchair access. They also have outdoor seating with nice water misting fans, etc. Restrooms were clean and orderly. Nice! We had latkes with applesauce and they were hot and delicious! Called the Kartoffelpuffer. Also had the pretzel appetizer. There was a strong mustard, beer cheese, and a butter aioli. I enjoyed them all. The pretzel was hot, crispy outside and soft inside. So good! Size of the plate/metal tray. Yum! Called Giant Bavarian Pretzel. I had the German Wurst Board. 3 different brats: Weisswurst, Bratwurst, and Pepperwurst. Sauerkraut, cider braised red cabbage, and pretzel rolls (served warm). LOVED IT! So delicious! 2 in our group had the Greed Goddess salad. We were at the Texas Bullock Museum and got a bit peckish. Around the corner (walking distance) is Scholz Garden. This is a very German pub that has been around for over 100 years. One con is the lack of ramps/wheelchair access- there is one tiny step to get in from the bar side of the restaurant- which appeared to be the main entrance. We stopped in on the same day of the 3M Half Marathon and this place was HOPPING! Immediately upon entering you're hit with the delicious smell of smoked meat and general welcoming German pub vibes. It's dark and still decorated for Christmas which is charming. We were sat down quickly and brought waters, then ordered some tea. The tea came in practically gallon containers (ok, maybe liter) and was fantastic. My Arnold Palmer even came with a spoon to mix it up - I think they make their own lemonade here! The pretzel was crunchy on the outside and melty soft and warm on the inside. Almost like a donut but savory. OMG it was so good. It came with garlic butter and mustard along with some cheese. We also got some red cabbage rotkohl - so yummy. Our turkey sandwich and weisswurst did not disappoint. I sent the menu to my German friend and she was like "wow, that place looks legit!" And as far as I can tell, it is! We are visiting Austin to celebrate my mom's birthday and I slipped away to ask our waitress and another staff member if they did anything for birthdays. We visited for the first time Saturday while in town for a concert at the Moody Amphitheater. We were excited to try the food and the beers, and initially bummed to have a limited menu for event days. However!! While limited, what they did, they did oh so well!!! We had the Schweinshaxe (pork shank) with pretzel roll, pickles, pickled green beans and some really tasty au jus and also a brat with sauerkraut. Both great choices!! Since it was a busy busy day (out of town UT game on TV, and two concerts) the beer list was not up to date and the bar line was long. The bartenders inside were hustling. Their recommendations when our picks weren't available were spot on! I'm excited to try again on a non event day. I stopped by here with some friends to grab food before a concert. We were all starving and wish we weren't short on time so that we could go get food somewhere else. We ordered the following: Reuben waffle fries: 2/5 mediocre. Your typical frozen waffle fries with a bunch of pastrami and sauerkraut thrown on top. Bbq wings: 2.5/5 The bbq sauce was smoky and didn't taste good. The wings themselves didn't have any flavor at all. Kartoffelpuffer: 0/5. This was truly disgusting. The pancakes were mushy and super salty. We all tried it and hated it. The mushroom gravy made it even worse. German bratwurst: 1/5 just not a good bratwurst (and this is coming from my friend who is German). read more

I would recommend visiting this place if you are ever in Austin and like German food. My beautiful wife and I met some friends from out of state there. They used to live in Germany so I thought they might enjoy it. This place says that it is the oldest continuously operating beer garden in America and the oldest operating business in the state of Texas. My wife and I ordered the Rueben sandwich with waffle fries. Serving sizes were big enough to split. We also got the pretzel and we tried the sauerkraut balls. The food was delicious! The inside was dark. Not very well lit for afternoon. The walls, floor and bar were all dark wood. It would have been better to sit outside but when we got there it was an hour wait. Welcome to Austin. I live in Round Rock and was in town for a work trip and I needed lunch to go. My husband told me it was great food so I was gonna grab him something along with mine. So let's begin with the moment I walk in the door. There may have been 4 tables and 2 at the bar at 11:30, not a "hi" or "we'll be right there". I grabbed a menu and sat at the end of the bar close to the door thinking that was a good spot. The bartender never said anything word or even looked at me ( I have 20+ years in the restaurant business)Nice. A big Burley gentleman (probably a regular)walked in 5 minutes after me,sat down and amazingly, therefore bartender started conversation and grabbed him a beer and started taking his order. All the while I'm just waiting to be acknowledged and nothing. Not a single second of eye contact. So I just casually grabbed my things and walked out. Pretty disappointed that the service was like that but oh well, customer service needs some work and If I would've gotten my lunch, I tip 50% because I know $2.13/hr +tips isn't alot. (without pretzels) I went on a weekday afternoon to celebrate getting a new job. Our server was very friendly and personable, and cracked all the right jokes. They didn't have a happy hour menu to give us, but there were some good deals- check the website! If I didn't live 30 min away, this would definitely become the go to watering hole. DO NOT go here for sports, especially the World Cup! We specifically came here based on online reviews listing them as a "World Cup" bar. What a regretful decision! We were surprised that the place was pretty dead, but it wasn't that big of a deal. However, when we went to order dinner at 8:45pm, they said the kitchen was already closed. What restaurant/bar closes their kitchen that early?? And even if they wanted to, why would they not give us a heads up? Especially since there was only a handful of people there. And unfortunately the place is very isolated so there were no other restaurants nearby to get food. Since we didn't want to miss the rest of the World Cup game, we stayed there to at least finish drinking and watching the game. But then, a little later when we wanted to order more drinks, they said they already had last call. Again, they never announced that, which would have been easy considering how few customer were there. Then to top it all off, and the worst part is, the World Cup game went into extra time. A few minutes after 10pm, they told us that they were going to close and we would have to leave before the game was over!! Who does that?!?! Especially a "World Cup bar"?!?! I have never experienced a bar/restaurant kicking customers out because a game goes long past their closing time. Would it really have hurt them to stay open an extra 30 minutes?? Especially after we spent a bunch of money on drinks for the previous 2 hours. And again, because it was isolated, there was no where else we could go to finish the end of the game. Scholz Garten has a great beer selection with both local and German options. The food is consistently good--well-made, satisfying, and not overcomplicated. Service is solid, even when it's busy. Plenty of space, which is rare around here, and the atmosphere works whether you're with a group or just stopping in. I've been a few times and it's always been worth it. read more

This place is super laid back. Offers indoor and outdoor seating. There's plenty of space in this place. I came here for lunch TWICE within a week not only because the food was fantastic, but also because the wait staff are super welcoming and friendly. The first time, we went a little too late as it was close to closing time (I'm usually not *THAT* type of person) but they gladly seated us. Due to this our options were limited but we still had plenty of delicious items to choose from. I ordered their Haus Burger and let me tell you, it was SO GOOD. The patty itself was perfectly seasoned and juicy. I also tried their chicken tenders which were surprisingly yummy, juicy and flavorful. Oh and I tried their pastrami Sammy which was so tasty my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The second time I went, I ordered their piggie smalls and was blown away by all the flavor.
