If you like beer, meat, fun crowds and football, this is where you should be during UT games. Tons of outdoor benches and even a side room with rows of chairs and the game on a huge projector screen. Almost impossible to not find a seat if you are looking for one. It does get really crowded on game days and it is hard to get a beer. However on regular days the beer is cold and the food is hot. If you are looking for a fun, casual place downtown where you can actually find a parking spot and not see 18 year olds dancing on a bar, this is a great place to go. read more

I have to admit, I wasn't impressed. I FINALLY made it here this weekend during the UT Game after living in Austin my whole life and hearing all the hype. Okay, okay, I know it was probably the worst UT game to check this place out considering the fans have literally given up for the season, tailgaters found something better to do, and many just simply gave their tickets away. The weather was nice and the place was virtually empty during the 3rd quarter, so we sat outside after I toured around the inside and checked out what beer selection they had. Without the crowd- this place isn't very inviting. The TV's were lame and hard to see unless you were sitting right in front of the stage b/c they were low. I could imagine at night it would be a little more lively as I saw some lights hanging in the trees outside, etc. The beer selection was okay- very limited outside. $6-7 for drafts inside. I'm tempted to give Scholz's 5 stars for the space. The building is old and beautiful, and if you sit in the front (the Republican section as they mention on their menu) and ignore the TVs, you can almost see the ghosts of dead cowboys outside hitching up their horses and leaning on the gorgeous old bar. Sit outside in the bier garten if you want to be transported to the Alps. Actually, I've never been to Germany, just like I never lived in the old west, but it's a great place to play vacation. The food is so-so, I personally love the schnitzel that comes with lemon (avoid the gravy) and the german potato salad is great, but I've made friends go with me that weren't as charmed by the offerings as I was. I also don't think they have much for vegetarians outside a Boca burger and side dishes. The beer selection is pretty decent as are the prices. Sometimes they are closed for large events and that's very frustrating if you want a pint after work as there really are no alternatives nearby save the Liquor store on Lavaca + the state parking garages surrounding the establishment or the Crown and Anchor across the UT campus. Thankfully there's a 7 bus stop nearby and that will get you to Crown and Anchor at least. I pretty much look at Scholz as a place you have to go at least once if you want to earn full status as an Austinite and weren't born here. Scholz is one of those spots in Austin that I kick myself for not discovering earlier. A great outdoor patio, I can only imagine what it's like on a gameday, imagine only because I think I'd rather avoid the madness of that. I'll take my Scholz on an empty sunny afternoon. I come here every time I visit Austin! The food is delicious and the selection of beer is nice. When you first walk in, you are hit with the fabulous smell of barbecue, then greeted my the sight of the most beautiful bar I have ever seen. The menu is a collection of different types of food ranging from German Wiener schnitzel to burgers and barbecue. I've had the Jaeger schnitzel most often and it's great. They even give you the option between pork, veal, or chicken. I go with the pork but that's me...you do you. The Bavarian pretzel is also amazing and huge. It's the best pretzel I've ever had and the Düsseldorf mustard they serve it with is delicious. I haven't had much of their barbecue but I tried a bite of my girlfriend's chopped beef slider and it was good. I look forward to trying more of the menu in the future. Now back to that gorgeous bar. They have a good selection of German beers on tap like Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. They also have many local beers on tap. If I could eat here everyday I would. read more

This is a fun place to go if you want some decent food with your beer while listening to music or watching sports. It's dingy, dark and very old Austin. All of their appetizers are pretty good (for bar food) and their queso is delicious. It's also a good place to have a party. They cater a nice appetizer buffet with quesadillas, queso, sausage, salsa, nachos, chicken strips, etc. The food is okay ... nothing award winning and that's fine with me. I know it's not trying to be a 5 star restaurant. I give them 2 stars because my meal was edible, but I left wanting to punch someone in their face. The service is flat out despicable. Today we went with a large group of people from work. You would think they would try to be nice to the people who come in from state office buildings because they get a lot of business from them, but we were given a lot of grief over moving tables together to accommodate our group. The girl who was "helping" us had a bad attitude. She made a big fuss and showed no sign of friendliness or desire to solve our seating problem. She made no attempt to see that we were happy with our food. No one checked on us to see if we needed anything--and we were afraid to ask for fear that we would get our heads bitten off. The waitress asked me on two separate occasions if I wanted something to drink and both times I asked for water. She never got it, and eventually after I had waited for 15 minutes without a drink, she asked another waitress to get it and it was practically slung in front of me without a word. Another person from our party asked for a drink and she rolled her eyes as she was going to get it. We were not being rude or overly demanding, but she made it obvious that we were severely inconveniencing her by being there. Before I write a review allow me to give a little background. I am a dual citizen by birth and my mother is full German. I frequently travel to Germany to visit my family. My review will seem biased based on the fact that every German restaurant I've gone to has not been able to match the quality of good home cooked German food that my mother makes (she can make a mean schnitzel). Now the review: I ordered the "Jägerschnitzel" and my girlfriend ordered the "Wienerschnitzel.". We both had a side of red cabbage and German potato salad. Jägerschnitzel - thinner than Amy winehouse. I think the breading is some loaf of white bread toasted and then crumbled up with a little bit of lemon juice tossed in. The schnitzel....I dunno. I'm use to thicker schnitzel. This one seemed like it was beat up then flattened with a rolling pin. The German potato salad....ehhhh I've had really good German potato salad from flying saucer(real good!). The red cabbage.....gundelsheim red cabbage is good much better than here. We also got some kind of roll which I guess wasn't bad. I took my girlfriend here in Hopes of experiencing a really good full blown German restaurant but sadly this place doesn't do it for me. I have not tried anything else here but I hope the BBQ tastes good The beer is very good. A pitcher of Spaten Optimator as it was cheaper than a pint of it. I drink nothing but imports since American "flavored water" doesn't appeal to me. (talking main stream like bud, coors, etc). I've been here one time for actual dinner and twice more for events. The events were actually ok, which is why this earns a 2 star experience. They had sausage, queso, and pretzels at those events, and they were all pretty good. Bravo, scholz. For anything but German food, ignore this review and give it like 3 stars instead. I should have written something nice about these folks much sooner. It's not like we never go there, it's just that we don't go to Scholz's often only due to proximity. Now that we are season ticket holders for Bass, we can park our car, walk to Sholz's before the performance and have dinner and drinks and make it to our performance happy and fully. Plus the 15 minute walk from Scholz to Bass is perfect. Our bartender (Morgan) greeted us and answered all questions we had about the multiple taps giving us small samples of any brews we furrowed our eyebrows at. He was good about reading us and knowing when the description of the brew wasn't as good as a taste. What's the saying, a picture is worth a thousand words? Well a taster is even better! The other thing we like about Morgan. He is busy but keeps an eye on things and is ready in a flash if you have a question or he sees 'that look' which means I have a question or I have a need. I like bartenders like that. Also, he's personable and can chat it up with the right amount of conversation as to not be 'in your business' or dominating a conversation. The bar area is the epitome of what we like about real pubs. A nice long wooden bar with lots of chairs (not attached) and a nice place to rest your feet. Behind the bar is a large mirror with a nice antique look, all wood backing, and it just looks like it so belongs where it is. The whole bar area looks like you could close your eyes and Matt Dillon could walk in an have a seat right beside you (except for the flat screen TV's in the corners, but Matt might just like that). The tap selection is plentiful and varied. You had anything from stouts, IPA's, wheats, pilsners, etc. So there is plenty of taps and choices here. The food menu is also one of the best I've ever seen in any pub. It has LOTS of really good choices on it and one of the fullest menus but not complicated and flashy. Bar B Que, to nachos to chicken tenders to sausage wraps and we've had all of the above and thought the quality, for such a selection, was very good. Especially the BBQ. The smell of BBQ is in the air so if you're not hungry when you walk in, your olfactory sensors will change all of that in due time. So there it is. I really like the atmosphere of this place...big open spaces and you feel like you're just as likely to see a group of old people playing bunco as you are to see the regular young Austin crowd. However, I'm a little bit concerned about the food... The first time I went I had the wienerschnitzel, and I brought along my German boyfriend for a professional opinion. I didn't particularly like my plate of food, but he assured me that it was authentically German....so maybe I just don't like wienerschnitzel. The second time I went I had the Reuben and it was SUPER tasty, but the bread seemed kind of soggy...not in a bad way...because seriously, it was GOOD. I don't know if the toast was soaked with corned beef juices or butter. I guess it doesn't matter, but it just seemed a little odd. Also, it was served with plain old potato chips with ridges, which were good, but also seemed kinda out-of-place. Unfortunately my German was not present this last time, so I could not ask him if this is standard practice in the motherland. The folks at the capital said that this was the oldest restaurant in Austin, so my friend and I decided to try it out. He had beef tips and I had the barbecued half chicken. For sides, he got sauerkraut and I got German potato salad, and we both got fried okra. I really enjoyed the salad and he really enjoyed the kraut. We both agreed the okra was meh at best. What killed me was the barbecue. I've had better chicken from the grocery store deli section. The bbq sauce they provided had such a mild flavor that I couldn't tell if it was indeed bbq sauce when I tried it straight up. And the hot sauce was a bland, generic vinegar sauce that added nothing. If I drive through Austin again, I'm definitely trying somewhere else. read more

Love this place! We're in town for my nieces graduation and we were looking for a place to eat close to the Frank Erwin Center where she would be graduating and we were told about this place! Just a couple of blocks from the center we were able to get in and out quickly and the service was attentive and the food was good and reasonable! I had the Catfish lunch special and it was good! I went to Scholz to see a show with some friends this last Saturday - The place was decently busy (i.e. not a UT game night). First, the service was horrible. While there appeared to be waitresses in the beer garden not once did one swing by our table to ask if we wanted anything. The line at the bar inside was to say the least disorganized (ordered pitchers since it took more than 10 minutes for each trip to the bar). The food was just ok. The brisket has good smoke but was not tender; the bratwurst was not particularly flavorful; the kraut tasted like it was from a can while the German potato salad was actually pretty good. Finally, the entrance / area near the entrance of 17th should really use a good steam cleaning - nothing like the aroma of stale beer and piss to close out the night... read more

I've been here about four times, always during a team lunch, and the service is usually unbearably slow. Today we made it in and out in an hour and twenty minutes- record time for this place! I'm only awarding two stars because the steamed broccili was greasy, the peach pie was more like a bread pudding, the red cabbage was more the texture of canned cranberry sauce, and the german potato salad was just... eh. Got a suggestion to try Scholz Garten since it was close to the Frank Erwin Center. It was a busy night since there was a concert going on as well, yet there's no excuse for the slowness and being understaffed. Not to mention that it took way too long to even get acknowledged though we had orginally started outside and moved inside. Also, lost in the fold was the fact that we had ordered tea and water, never showed or got brought to us once we moved inside. Had to order the tea and water again. On a sidenote when the tea was ordered we asked about coffee cause it was brisk outside and we decided not to order it as there was none brewed at the time and would have needed to get made, so settled for tea. So, lack of communication between the wait staff. Another issue that came into play was the poor attiude of the one that took our order. She saw that we were standing around the table and that it needed to get cleared before we could sit. Instead of coming over quickly the waitress took her time and didn't have anything to wipe down the table once cleared had to go back for it. Also, it took well after the fact that we ordered for any utensils to be brought out. Ordered an appetizer, which was good. Yet, that's the only positive the potato skins. We also noticed that e As for the cheese burgers we ordered were mediocre at best and for the price should have tasted much better. Beyond that it would have been nice to know that if fries were substitued for potato chips that there was a charge for it. Here's what you get at Scholz Garten mediocre mediocre food, while understaffed, with employees who do not communicate well whethere among themselves or to those who have come to eat. Scholz Garten offers precisely that "I know what I am getting feeling." You walk into Scholz and just know that the food will be mediocre, probably purchased, and well... just that stepchild. This is the place to be for game day and perhaps concerts, but it will never be on my go-to for a quick business lunch. Sort of reminds me of Stubb's. The menu is pretty straightforward, but they certainly offer way too many things. For lunch, I was torn between... well the whole menu, since the specials just did not sound appealing. I ended up trying their "special" of a lunch-priced 2-meat tray. Sure, at $8, it is a steal, but I certainly cannot foresee myself going back to feast on this extremely mediocre cue. My smoked turkey was OK; it was fairly dry. My smoked wings were not super tender, and the sauce was bland. They pretty much sucked. I had a bite of my buddy's Reuben. The meat was chewy, and one slice of bread was just dripping in grease. Not the greatest meat and bread combination ever. Definitely would not recommend Scholz, save a possible game day situation or perhaps a special concert. Do not return for the grub, under any circumstances! read more

My husband and I came with our dog to get dinner. We asked about bringing him inside because it was chilly, and we're met with a very snarky response. Waited outside 15 minutes before stopping a waitress and asking where we order food. Her response was, "we can never guarantee you food service outside when you bring a dog," Very rudely. Even after reading the reviews about crappy service and mediocre food we decided to give it a try. We got there around 5:30and saw a sign stating "seat yourself." That wasn't an easy task in a packed restaurant and a whole section was closed off for a pvt party. We knew from the reviews there was outdoor patio seating, so we made our way to the back. Knowing it was 53 degrees out with temps dropping we were considering someplace else. With a quick look around we saw several kerosene heaters and knee those would be enough to keep up warm. A gentleman came around lighting the heaters soon after we picked our picnic table on the patio. The one placed directly behind our table went out after being moved while lit. Other guests began moving other heaters (while lit) to their tables. The table in front of us moved one in between our tables and soon after that it went out as well... So they began trying to ignite it. Didn't seem like such a good idea for guests to be handling kerosene heaters, especially ones that have been drinking. Speaking of drinks, we were served out drinks 15 minutes after sitting down. Our appetizer and meal or was taken at that time. Once the food was delivered, no one came back out to the patio for our table to refill drinks or see how our food was. Now the food. We order burgers and schnitzels. The burger was extremely rare (dare I say raw in the center?). The fries were limp and wrinkled. The schnitzels were cooked in so much butter you couldn't taste anything more than butter. This place was packed during SXSW. The host was the waiter, too. Therefore it took a long time to get seated, to get waited on, to get refills, and to get a check. That's understandable, and I'd be stressed in that position. The host/waiter is friendly, happy, and patient. He knows the menu well. The building is from the 1860s with an interesting history. My boyfriend goes here frequently and has been wanting to take me to get a pretzel with beer cheese since he started going. They are literally ALWAYS out of pretzels. The atmosphere of this restaurant is fantastic with a classic wood bar and window sills, and a large outdoor patio for music and entertainment. The food served here isn't authentically German, nor is their beer selection diverse, but it is affordable and delicious all the same. A great place to bring family or stop by after an event at UT. My main problem with this place is the service and management. The wait staff are consistently inattentive, fail to acknowledge customers upon arrival, switch out table sections without informing the guest, and will switch your beer selection if they are out of your original order without informing you. All of these problems can be contributed to poor management which is really holding the restaurant back in terms of profit and popularity. As others have stated, the only thing keeping this place in business is the proximity to UT, and the monopoly it has to the government offices across the street. If management decides to take a more hands on approach and sets more strict guidelines for their staff, this place has great potential in the downtown area. After 38 years in Austin, I finally ate some BBQ at the Garten. It'll probably be another 38 before I eat there again. I was there for a presentation and knew they were busy, but after waiting 37 min for my meal (yes, I timed it), I asked the bar girl where my food was. Puzzled look and no apology, she found some in minutes. The brisket was barely warm, the fries were beyond stale and she mistook potato salad for a dinner salad. I was back at my seat before I realized her error. Too bad for me, I was hungry. The brisket was not as good as Poke Joe's (and they charge an extra dollar for it. $10.99 for1 meat and 2 sides). The rest was very forgettable. The place may be an iconic drinking establishment, but don't bother with the food. I got similar responses when I asked about other dishes around me. read more

Came here to watch the September 2015 Republican GOP debate. Great atmosphere, many televisions and projector screen, was easy to hear and view the debate, while enjoying a cold one! Probably a great bar to watch UT games! Bar tenders could have been a little more chill. I was asked to not get myself a lime, but when asked and no one got it for me, what're you supposed to do? Come on bartender! Also their wifi did not work- management should fix this ASAP. Another bartender forgot to give me change back on one beer when I gave her a twenty, she acknowledged the mistake and the next beer was on the house - customer service done right! I'm not as big a fan as I hope, but, it's a good place. Worth visiting. My family had a rehearsal dinner at Scholz's back room in December of 2007, and it was actually a huge hit. It went without a hitch, they were very accommodating, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The beer is good, as most Austin bars have shown to be the case, but the inside of the establishment is what I really want to comment on. The vibe is one of rich cultural history (albeit it strong, German history), it feels great to be in there. Men's groups still meet there to talk shop, and young groups of people meet there simultaneously to discuss problems of their day, a most interesting juxtaposition. There's German paraphernalia all over the place (which has a special place in my heart), and they've got a few good German brews, as well as the staples of a Texas bar. If you've got some family in town and there's nice weather, take them to Scholz Bier Garten. Their Beer Garden is fantastic, can hold lots of people and everyone I've ever encountered there has been more than happy to make some space for me. It's not a dump but it's also not an assuming place, no false sense of importance (although it is very, very important to a lot, i mean A LOT of people). read more

Best damn pretzel I've ever had, EVER. My brats were OK. The pepperwurst is too much and the other two were a little bland but overall not bad. Wife had schnitzel which was good but a little overdone. I'd love to give this place another shot but we're out of towners. This was a great experience. Decided to have dinner there before a concert, very easy walk to Frank Erwin Center. The beer, the appetizer nachos, the jaegerschnitzel, chicken fried steak and burger that our party ordered, along with sides of kraut, red cabbage, fried okra , german potato salad and the peach cobbler ( yes you could get it for one of your side dishes!!) all were cooked to perfection and delicious. The third star is for the biergarten, which is actually pretty cool, especially when there's a band. The BBQ is very average, as are the sides. Prices are a bit high for what you get, and cokes and tea are $2 (also high). The ribs were pretty good, I've learned not to order the brisket because it's always cold. I don't know how that even happens, but it's wrong. There are much better places to get BBQ in and around Austin, but the location is great and on a cool evening, the biergarten is wonderful. This place is pretty amazing. They have a great beer selection on tap, they had live band karaoke with Karaoke Apocalypse the night I was there, host Geeks Who Drink on the regular, and hosted a giant pre party for Geek Bowl 7. The staff was on target with such a huge crowd. I never had to wait long for a drink. The outside bathrooms were tiny, but who really cares as long as you have a place to pee. Everyone's already covered the historical aspect of Scholz Garten, which is quite impressive (longest continually operating business in Texas). This is a drinking spot. I sure wish their kitchen did a better job! I've been going to this place forever, but only for the bar and definitely NOT for the food. Years ago the food was just okay, these days I won't even bother with it, as I've learned my lesson over a period of many years (and so have others, per their reviews). Maybe one day Scholz's will set higher standards and do a better job in the kitchen. One can always hope... So if you're in the area sometime and they are open (Closed Sundays) and you're in the mood for a drink, stop on in, you probably won't be too disappointed. Nice beers on tap and a full bar. Came here today with our son. The pretzel was amazing! The best I have had anywhere including Germany. The sausages were good too although the venison was a bit overpriced as it didn't come with any sides. Loved our beer recommendations. However, we had two issues: 1. The ladies bathroom had not been properly cleaned in a long time due to the crud around one of the faucets. 2. Once our food was delivered our server literally disappeared forever! We finally tracked down another server to order another item which was served promptly but we never saw our server again. Big mistake. No second drinks or dessert. So we asked someone else for our check. Oddly enough the other item we ordered wasn't on the bill. We had it corrected but how many other times does this happen?
