We…read morehad taken the ferry over from bar harbor and walked the 15 minutes to the shop instead of taking the free shuttle. The bikes are not delivered to the ferry but that was not a problem. The bike route is full of incredible views. We stopped frequently to take pictures. There was not much traffic. If you take the bike path across the peninsula, be aware that it is a heavy gravel path with some steep winding curves and downhills. Even as experienced cyclists, we decided to walk that part. There are 2 restaurants on the loop but unfortunately both were closed on Mondays. However we found another restaurant once we returned the bikes. It was a great day.

Their online cutoff is 2pm the day before, which means you have to call-fine, except the woman who answered never called us back. We had to chase her down twice just to confirm a reservation. We arrived at 12:50 for a 1pm pickup and stood there watching the one staff member slowly process an entire family who was renting bikes for the next day on our time. The guy who eventually got us our bikes moved like he was underwater. Directions? He handed us a map that would challenge a cartographer and told us to "turn at the thing that blinks." That was the landmark. The blinking thing. We missed a turn. My husband's bike was mechanically broken. He came back with mud splattered across his backpack, shorts, and hair. And the e-bikes if you've rented an e-bike anywhere else in your life, do not expect that here. These things have less power than a child's ride-on toy. I'm not exaggerating. There is no assist. There is no joy. Unprofessional, disorganized, and a complete waste of a half day in a place where you have limited time and actually want to have fun. Skip it.

A mechanic cheerfully popped on the SPD pedals we brought with us, and we were off, departing from BHBS for the park. We felt like we lived on those bikes for three days. We popped by the shop on the third morning for fresh shifter batteries and a tire top-off. Return was effortless and gave us a chance to browse the well-merchandised shop. We also had an enjoyable chat with owner Peter who definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to cycling.

We had kids and the carriage trails in Acadia have some hills. She accommodated all our needs, including adding bike baskets that we could take our lunch. We loved that the town wasn't crowded. I was able to ride my bike to the Brown Mountain parking for the bottom of the carriage trails just a mile or so away. Riding to it wasn't bad, but you have to share the road with drivers and you'll one hill to get there. Most people on the trail do e-bikes, but I did a regular bike that had great shocks. We had tag-along bikes for the kids on the e-bikes and that worked great for the four of them. Since I ride all the time, I was able to keep up with them (or the other way around), the whole time. When you leave the bike shop on your bike - you make a left onto the road, but w kids - they can stay on the very left on the paved sidewalk and ride straight onto the residential street and enter the park. The staff was great in getting our large group situated and they did a last minute switch for one adult towing a trailer to an e-bike. We loved that they had snacks and energy bars for purchase before we left and we def got drinks as a treat after the ride! We also appreciated that they had a very clean restroom as well! Wilton was quick to respond to our booking request (another company we contacted never responded), but what really impressed us about Island Time Acadia was the personal and friendly service which included "going the extra mile." The e-bikes were well maintained, and delivered to our rented cottage, along with chargers for each bike (e-batteries could be charged either on or off the bikes). We initially ran into some glitches with the rack (through no fault of the company) and Wilton and Merrill went out of their way to resolve them beyond our expectations. They made us feel like family, even checking in a few times to see how we like the bikes and telling us good places to park. We recommend renting the e-bikes for at least 3 days to explore all the carriage roads in the national park!
