We've been with School of Rock for about 6 years now, the last two at GV. We absolutely love SoR and highly recommend it. They are so inclusive and allow all the kids to be themselves and they find connections quickly. The music teachers are amazing and the kids progress very quickly, and many end up on multiple instruments. GV has great performances and allows the kids to perform at great venues, including strip shows! This was a big plus for us having come from a smaller town in Washington. Follow up to my previous post 3 years ago. My daughter has been a member of SOR for 5 years. During this time she has become and amazing drummer, made the best friends, and met the most amazing instructors. But in the past 2 years this has all changed!! The current General Manager has turned the school into a place where the kids feel alienated and unwelcome. They are censored and their hard work is unappreciated. Even the instructors that love their work with the kids are forced out because they can't handle working for such an incompetent boss. I strongly encourage you to research your options for music lessons. This is no longer the place you want to send your kids! read more

Having my son participate in the School of Rock was one of the best decisions I have ever made for my child. He loves it so much and looks forward to the days he has practice with his instructor and band friends! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming! His one-on-one practice allows him to learn so many new things including reading from a music book! Playing with the group of kids as a band has taught him how to gain stage confidence, play together with others, and have fun at the same time. Very happy with Green Valley School of Rock. My daughter went through Rock 101 and is now in her first performance group. The teachers are outstanding and do a great job helping my daughter learn, moving at just the right pace to keep her challenged but not overwhelmed. Between the teachers and the experience playing great music with other kids right from the start, she's never been more motivated to play! My 10 year old daughter has been attending School of Rock (SOR) Green Valley for a year and she absolutely loves it! All of her instructors have been so supportive and encouraging! My daughter started School of Rock as a vocal student in the Rock 101 program, and then became interested in learning to play guitar too. She really enjoyed learning to sing and play guitar in Rock 101. She graduated Rock 101 and moved into the performance group. Performance group is amazing! The kids take a weekly private lesson with their instrument, and attend a weekly "jam session" to practice their songs together as a band. I was a student at SORGV for 2 years. It's an awesome place to start if you're just beginning to learn an instrument, however once you hit a certain skill point things just arent challenging anymore. SOR is performance based rather than building up musical knowledge & skill, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's what you prefer. The instructors are all amazing & the music director, Carlos, is incredible with the students & he's brought nothing but joy to the school. The performances were always fun & organized, it's great for exposure because we've played at a lot of places. If you're a more advanced musician & are serious about it, then finding a band is definitely better than doing SOR (as sor isnt taken very seriously by the students). I wish that instructors would get more involved with the students though- i think the environment would feel a lot better & perhaps there wouldnt be such a problem with bullying between the students. Unfortunately the school has gone downhill since the new general manager stepped in. Chondell is horrendous & she has no respect for anybody but herself. She walks around that school as if she's God's Greatest Gift To The Earth or something. The way I've heard her talk to people (even parents) is extremely rude & demeaning & it's unacceptable. My peers who went there felt as though Chondell couldn't care less about them & trying to talk to her was a nightmare. Constantly being ignored, put on her "hold list", & whenever she had something to say it was never beneficial to anybody. I know plenty of people who have quit or are thinking about quitting because of her. I know a lot of parents that are unhappy as well. Even some of the instructors have quit, & some have been here since the beginning. Just awful. read more

Our family was looking for an activity that my child would want to stick with. That was the goal. What we found was a passion and a community. My child picked up the bass and hasn't looked back. We have 2 shows behind us now and we aren't looking back. The weekly lessons are fun, and informative, with instruction in current music and theory. And the weekly rehearsals are something both of us look forward to, me because of how happy my child is when they are over. My child's swagger of confidence tells me we are in the right place. The community of children have welcomed my child and there is a wonderful sense of belonging. The management and instructors make us feel like family, always encouraging, and always with a smile. For the last year, my child has been attending this school twice a week. She takes private lessons once a week and has rehearsal for 3 hours with a group of kids. The rehearsals are targeting a final performance 3 to 4 months out. At the middle and end of each "season", the kids perform the songs they've learned together on stage. Then a new season begins and the kids can choose which tract they want to be in. Tracts range from punk, metal, classic rock, emo, and more. Unlike other schools we've tried, there's an option here to sign up and come to rehearsals once a week to learn with other kids. These kids and their teachers form bonds and hold each other accountable. My child is more enthused to practice because she doesn't want to be the weakest link. She's also having fun learning music she recognizes (mostly) and can share the learning experience with other kids. Additionally, the school is organized and payments can be set up automatically. Communication with the parents is done through email and I always get a note after each lesson so I know what my child needs to practice. This system is so much more efficient and effective than other schools. They really have the administrative side of this school figured out. I highly recommend this school and I know they give a free lesson for kids to check it out. So do it! read more

I was conflicted about writing this review but in the end I decided to just do it, because I really care about kids and music education, and I suspect our family isn't the only one who had a mixed experience. School of Rock provides a fun and highly motivating alternative to traditional music lessons which require discipline and patience, something a lot of kids are short on. It's also great for the social/emotional benefits. My shy kids performed on a stage and improved their confidence, expressed themselves, they got to know other kids, they had awesome role models in their teachers and the older more accomplished students, and they got familiar with some great music. I can't say enough positive things about the excellent teachers there--Harley and Jessica were amazing and my kids loved learning from them and clearly admire and were inspired by them. The other parents that we met seemed cool too. Having said that, I have a few problems with SoR, mostly having to do with pricing and management-- and most importantly their attitude about music education. The basic model at SoR, at least for beginners, is to provide kids with enough knowledge about their instrument to cover rock songs and perform them with other kids. Each kid gets a 45-minute private lesson during which, as far as I can tell, they are supposed to work on the songs they're going to cover. Then they also get a weekly 3-hour rehearsal where they practice their songs with other kids. SoR is not in the business of teaching your kids to read music, they do not teach ear training/aural skills, music theory, scales and chord progressions, improvisation, or any of these things that "traditional" music lessons would include. In fact, if you ask, management (Andy) will tell you traditional music lessons are an "outdated approach to music education that contradicts our philosophy." As I see it, it is just as or more outdated to assume that acquiring explicit musical knowledge will somehow crush your authenticity and rock n roll musicality. As a Psychologist (Ph.D.) with specific expertise in child development and music cognition, I can tell you that there is growing behavioral and neuroscientific evidence that "traditional" music lessons benefit children in a whole range of ways--basic hearing, auditory brain function, attention, language, social and cognitive abilities, wellness, self-discipline/cognitive control, and many more. So to tell parents that traditional music education is "outdated" is not only dead wrong, but does a disservice to music and the arts more generally. Also, SoR is just way too expensive. After tuition and show and mid-season fundraiser fees we were looking at $600/month for our two kids. When you scale it to other comparable kid's activities (jiu jitsu, swimming, dance, and yes, piano lessons), it is easily 3-4x as much, and I'm not convinced it's worth it. I would love to put my kids in a lower key program where they perform in people's back yards--I don't need them to perform at House of Blues. As someone who wants to see more music engagement in the world especially for kids, it bothers me that this program is nearly inaccessible to all but the highest income families. And for my own kids, the resulting lack of diversity really dilutes the social advantages of the program. Finally, I did not appreciate the sketchy bait-and-switch sales tactics I got with the manager. He guaranteed us a discount for the entire year (3 seasons), but in the middle of the first season of the year he told me there would be no discounts starting in summer. Similarly, at one point he told me there might be the option of lessons-only, but then later when I asked about that, he told me that no, they won't do lessons-only. Right after we got billed $200+ for end-of-season show fees, we get told (surprise!) we have to pay at least $50 to accompany our kids to the school's mandatory mid-season fundraiser. And when I questioned it he had this attitude like how dare we complain about the cost. On the whole, this is a fun but very expensive program, and in my opinion it's not 3x as valuable as everything else our kids could be doing, including traditional music lessons. read more

I absolutely love School of Rock! My son started out playing violin when he was younger because the school he went to at that time required it. At first he was excited until he started private lessons. The teacher was mean and always made him feel terrible about how he was playing. It was never good enough. It got to the point where he hated music. Then when we decided to homeschool and I found School of Rock. At first when I told him I was going to have him try a free lesson to see if he liked it he did not want to go. He said he hated music. Then he worked with Tom and everything changed! Now he spends hours practicing every day and I do not have to nag him to practice, as he is wanting to do it every free moment. He looks forward to going to Band Practice and his private lessons. Tom totally changed how he sees music. Plus it has helped with his social skills. He was so outgoing before covid but then being alone with no other kids for so long during the shutdown that he kinda forgot how to be around other kids. But now, everything has changed; School of Rock's staff has been so welcoming and brought back the outgoing kid I knew pre-covid. This is one of the best things we could have ever done for our son. Our family will always be big supporters of School of Rock!!! read more

I hate that I have to post an updated review reducing my level of satisfaction with School of Rock Green Valley, but after months of being patient and waiting for things to get back to "normal" I've realized that is not likely to happen with the current management in place. We have been enrolled in SOR programs for over two years now. The school has seen many changes over this period of time, and unfortunately many of them have not been for the better. The downfall of this location is the GM. Chondelle (new GM) took the reins about six months ago, give or take. Since this time there has been a steady decline across the board with regard to the manner with which the school has been run. When she first came to the school I was excited to see new leadership. The previous GM had lost his way personally and that had bled into his abilities to run the school. So after several months of bumps it was exciting to know that the school would be getting back on track. Initially Chondelle presented herself as someone interested in bringing order back to the school, while giving the students and families a fun and welcoming atmosphere to express their creativity and grow their musical talents. It wasn't long before that facade began to crack and Chondelle's true intentions began to take shape. She has ruled with an iron fist and is not flexible with the students and parents. She has taken the fun out of the experience for my children. The manner with which she speaks to parents and students is abhorrent. She is condescending and rude. I've heard her in the front lobby of the school, where visitors and parents have to sit to wait for their students, berate the "children" (Chondelle refers to all of the students as "the children", even though the students range in age from 4 years old to 18) in front of a lobby full of people and other students. I've heard her speaking to prospective new families in such a way that it's no surprise they decided instead to go explore the other school which opened just down the street. Chondelle and her innate ability to make "the children" feel unwelcome and uncomfortable in an environment which they've previously grown to love and feel safe in has caused several students who have been enrolled for several years at SOR to have made the choice to leave the program and enroll in the new school down the street. She is not a person who should be in a leadership role, as she has poor people skills, no warmth in her communication with parents or students, a "better than thou" attitude, she's aggressive and defensive, and she chooses to speak at people (parents and students) rather than with people. It is my opinion that the recent decline in the quality of this school is a direct result of Chondelle being at the helm. I believe it is important to note in this review that my dissatisfaction has nothing to do with the instructors at the school. They're amazing! The Music Director, Carlos, is incredible and has a great rapport with parents and students alike. He provides a safe and comfortable environment for the students to learn in while keeping things fun and engaging. I firmly believe the recent decline of this school directly correlates with the leadership skills, or lack thereof, of the GM. It is my hope that the Corporate Offices of SOR listen to the feedback of the currently enrolled families and they step in to correct the issues in an attempt to improve the school. Something needs to be done to improve the leadership before they lose more families. read more

BEWARE in the past year this place has changed from a place where your kids love to learn to play music, make friends & put on great shows to a place that is extremely miserable & unhappy. My son now dreads going there every week, and only goes so he can see his few friends that are still left & the 3 instructors that have hung on but another is now leaving. I have been a SOR Parent for 6+ years and have NEVER been more unhappy with the entire program than this past year. This is a expensive program that you chose to enroll your child into. The current General Manager has reduced the The performance program which used to be amazing. In the past you used to have a 3 hour rehearsal once a week with a midseason and BIG end of season show. Now it is a 2 hour rehearsal once a week no midseason show and a short show at end of season. Yet you still pay the same amount of money and performance fees for much less program. Scheduling make up lessons is a nightmare and they act like they are doing you a favor by scheduling the lessons if you are lucky enough get them scheduled at all. They are usually with another instructor the won't know your child or the music you child needs to work on so much of the time is wasted getting to know your child, music & ability. If you are lucky enough to have a child that excels and wants to succeed you have to hope they fit the image to be supported. This is all depends on the GM liking you because she rules with a Iron fist and controls everything including trying to crush your child's love of music. This means little to no support from the school to achieve your goals as a musician both inside & outside the school. The GM thrives on controlling every aspect of the children and their futures as musicians this includes denying them opportunities to succeed. If you want to succeed you have to find your own opportunities and in doing so lose all support from this school by doing so. THE GM never builds up the kids but is quick to bully and take them down. Alumni are forbidden to enter this school and visit. They are told they are unwelcome and have to leave the premises. This saddens my son who is aging out of the program and will NOT be welcome to come and see his friends there any longer. Aging out or graduating from this program used to be a special event(it was for my older son 3 years ago). After 6+ years and 2 children in this program it breaks my heart to NOT RECOMMEND SOR GV to people. Please look around at other music schools before making the decision enroll your child. There are lots of options out there now. SOR GV is no longer the great place it once was a few years ago. read more

I went in there to purchase a be kind shirt that they are the only ones who carry this paticular rock edition and the NEW GM was so rude an wouldn't sell it to us, she said that no one from the organization had reached out to her so she didn't want to sell them, I explained to her it was a charity and that they were the only ones in town to sell them (my son had a be kind day the next day) she then called the josh Stevens foundation with me in front of her and left a messege saying several people have come in wanting to buy a shirt but she didn't sell them cause again she didn't know what it was for, i then told her if more then one person had come in asking for them maybe she should have reached out before or done some research, she was so rude and the irony of me wanting to buy my 5 year old son a be kind shirt, I also wanted to sign him up for rock class but she left such a bad taste in my mouth I didn't even want to sign him up and she was on a severe power trip, it's like she felt that the josh Stevens foundation should know she's new and reach out to her, what a bummer!! What started out as a Christmas gift from my daughter's grandma for a month membership in January - once expired we had to keep having her attend since she loves it! - There was no question about it at all! She just graduated the Rock 101 Program in Vocal and will be moving onto Performance in the near future. Her vocal teacher Kimmie is an excellent teacher and personally fronts a band herself with excellent stage presence and her voice is amazing! We couldn't ask for a better teacher than that for our daughter. Andy; the General Manager is very creative and in the short time we have been coming he has brought such a creative/fun vibe to SOR. I go in and I am excited to see what has Andy done? From the cool record album wall to the cool photo collage of the students displayed - everything that makes the students feel like RockStars themselves. Andy is constantly dealing with kids and parents and planning shows, running the front desk - being pulled so many directions wearing many hats but I see how he treats the students and the parents and I am very happy. You can tell he loves music and having children learn and you can tell the kids just adore him. And the instructors that worked with my daughter in the band session once a week we loved the level of instruction she got and loved how these kids were jamming together and learning. There are always positive vibes going on in their teaching techniques with the kids.
