A Huge Thank You to Kessler! A few days ago, I went to Kessler to update my nephew's cello rental because he had outgrown his previous one. He now has a full-size cello, and we are so excited for this next step in his musical journey! I already loved Kessler, but their customer service truly impressed me this time. I wasn't completely happy with the cover he was given, so I asked if it was possible to exchange it. They told me they would check if another one was available--and they didn't just stop there. They actually called another store to find one for my nephew! Yesterday, they called me to let me know they had brought the cover to their store so I could pick it up. Today, I went with my nephew to get it, and seeing how excited and happy he was when he saw his new cover made my heart so happy. Kessler & Sons is a gem of a local family business. My parents purchased my first flute from the Charleston location back in 2004. I played throughout middle school and stopped because of life. I picked flute back up in 2020, at which time I bought a cheap flute from Amazon. However, it was not great quality, so I checked K&S's website and found a great starter Yamaha flute. I called the store about it and they had it transferred here from the Charleston location. The flute was in amazing condition and the quality is so much better than I could have imagined. They also still sold all the student books that I used in middle school and it was so nostalgic and helpful to use those in my journey to playing again. The staff were so helpful and nice. Initially came here to rent a violin for my daughter's school year - service was amazing, very friendly and helpful service, answered all my questions and gave us very thorough options for rentals. We came back 6 months later because my daughter's private instructor said she was ready for a full size; my daughter also cemented her dedication and commitment to continue playing through high school, so we opted to use what rental credit remained to buy a full size violin. The team was excellent in showing us the options, let her test and play them all, and then even helped set up the fine tuners (until she's ready to take them off) without charge. We were interested in a specific instrument, and after doing some research we ended up in Kessler & Sons Music. We were able to call ahead and ask for items that we were interested in and were greeted with a friendly call. Kessler & Sons offers music instrument rentals, purchasing, and lessons! I thought that was pretty neat, I remember we'd have to rent musical instruments from school, but with Kessler's shop, you can go through them. The shop itself is small, so it can be crowded if there are parents waiting for their children. They have more of a orchestra instrument selection from what I've seen, so keep that in mind. I am not sure what lessons they offer, so if you're interested in that, you can call them and expect to provide you with some great customer service with all your questions. When you walk in, it might be busy, but the employees will try to help you as best and quickly as they can, and if you know exactly what you're looking for and they don't, they're not shy to ask you questions or call their other location to make sure they answer the question you have. Kessler & Sons: We've never experienced anything like this before--no pests such as cockroaches, silverfish, fleas, or bed bugs. Historically and currently, there have been no signs of bed bugs elsewhere in our home. When we discovered the issue, we contacted Jason Kibby at Henderson Pest Control (https://hendersonpestcontrol.com/about-us/). He contacted an expert, Joe Church, owner of Greentech Pest Control, on our behalf, who came over immediately. By the time Joe arrived, we had already disassembled the bed and moved the mattresses and other items from the bedroom to the backyard. Joe conducted a thorough inspection--examining the carpet and tack strips that anchor the carpet to the floor, bedding, toys, and various crevices in both the room and the items outside using specialized lighting equipment. While bed bugs don't fluoresce under UV light, they do leave behind identifiable trails. He found no signs of infestation in the room itself. However, he did find evidence of recent activity on the mattresses, within crevices of the bed frame, and on the fletching of some arrows. When he examined the trombone case, he identified it as the source, finding eggs, live bugs, and carcasses. He explained that the infestation had been caught early enough to avoid chemical treatment. He provided a detailed set of cleaning and sterilization steps and advised us to monitor the situation closely for several days before reintroducing anything into the room. We've nearly completed all of his recommendations. Assuming his assessment was accurate, the infestation should now be resolved. Before returning the trombone case, we cleaned it and sealed it in a bag. Since your clerk mentioned the previous renter had the instrument for only about six weeks, it's plausible that the infestation in the trombone case was minimal and that our cleaning efforts were sufficient. Wouldn't you agree that your consultant had little to work with in forming an opinion? After all, he only saw the case after it had already been cleaned. It would have been far more informative if he had been involved at the time of discovery--able to observe the infestation firsthand, inspect the room, and examine the case in its original condition, as Joe did. Please also note that no new furniture or items had been introduced into the room prior to the infestation--aside from the trombone case. We also haven't traveled recently. That context, along with Joe's findings, makes me inclined to trust his professional opinion. At this point, the room is entirely empty. I've purchased new beds, mattresses, and pillows, and sterilized all toys. If bed bugs reappear after everything is reintroduced, that might call Joe's assessment into question. However, if they don't, it seems reasonable to conclude that the trombone case was indeed the source. Respectfully, Dr. Brodersen read more

Kessler & Sons does have good rental rates/insurance through the schools, but I am not impressed with their rental credit idea. I rented my daughter's violin for 1 year and had almost $400 worth of credit. When I asked them about purchasing a violin with that credit, they quoted me a price but told me that this credit only lasts for 30 days. 30 days!!! That is rediculous!! read more

My son started 6th grade Band. We rented a trombone and the process was easy. There is a way to pre-fill out the rental form which runs a credit check before you go in, which expedites the process. We filled ours out in the store and it did take a minute because they had a packed house with all the kids getting new instruments or exchanging for larger sizes (I think that's more a cello thing?) but they handled things well and had 4 employees working non-stop to help us out. They kids with stringed instruments had great info ("Tighten to tune but once you can't any more bring it back and we will restring it for you.") which I can't speak to having been a band kid, but it looks like a great place if you need an orchestra instrument as well. read more

We took a group of students there for a tour, and they knew everything about the instruments, they brought in talented musicians, they let the kids play and tutored them, and they showed us that they really know their stuff and really care about their community. I ordered a low-c bass clarinet from these guys as I wanted an inexpensive rubber instrument to use outdoors and during gigs. I read reviews on various woodwind forums and they recommended these guys and another company. Ultimately, I decided to go with them as they were a bit cheaper for basically the same instrument. They do the setup on the instrument itself in their shop which was important to me so I was willing to pay the extra money versus buying from an eBay vendor. I talked with Dave Kessler over the phone and while he seemed interested in helping me, he had a patronizing tone which I didn't care for. Long story short, after a small issue with billing (which was my fault) I received the instrument on time but one of the accessories that I paid for was not included. The employees did not have the courtesy to contact me and let me know it would be shipped when it was back in stock (you would think the website would tell the customer the item isn't in stock). So I had to contact Dave again and let him know. Again, it seemed like I was bothering him with simple questions as to where my money was going and when things would be shipped. Overall, they seem to know what they're doing when it comes to musical instruments but the condescending tone over the phone and email, the lackadaisical shipping of items, and lack of contacting me when they should have in the first place left a sour taste in my mouth. read more

I brought in my low dollar flute that my 6th grader is using for school band. She dropped it and I brought it here so to see if it was salvageable, if not then I would buy a new one. When I gave it to them I was told that I would get a call about whether or not it could be. I got a call but it was to pick up the flute. I was confused as I thought that I was going to get a call on even if it was worth fixing or not. $15 bucks no big deal. However, I showed up today to pick up said flute and I had to hear about the man fixing it doing $60 worth of work to a flute that wasn't worth fixing. And a lovely note stating that I should "please consider a better flute-this is not a serviceable instrument." If that was the case why did I not get a call in the first place giving me the option to pay for any repairs at all? I guess they thought that since I bought a cheap flute to begin with that I wasn't willing to spend the money, however, maybe they should take into account that some people don't like to overspend on something until they know that their child will be into the instrument at all. I will be buying a better flute but will definitely be buying from another company since this one likes to add condescending notes that are unnecessary when picking up their instruments. The only reason that they get 2 stars is because the guy behind the counter was friendly, but probably should leave out the parts of the conversation he has with the people that are instrument snobs and try to make people feel bad for buying cheap before making a large monetary commitment for something that may or may not be an interest. I guess it just came down to can you fix it or not. Yes, fix item pay for item. No, then I'll come get my unfixable item and possibly buy new item from you. That would have saved me the time of writing my second ever review of any place I've ever been to in my lifetime. read more

They've moved locations quite a bit, but their top notch friendly service is intact. I recently visited this location to purchase a reed for my brother's alto sax. The cost is the same, the parking is better, and the staff has overall been knowledgeable, warm, and pleasant to work with. They are also more flexible with lessons than other places we have been. Initial impressions are good for this place. We arrived around 2pm on a Saturday. The store is slightly small, but has plenty of items and knowledgeable staff. I really just needed a couple clarinet reeds, and ended up with a map to their repair shop (for reference) and a beginner book for clarinet. The staff are friendly and welcoming and didn't try to upsell or change my mind about anything. Overall, a good experience and the kind of music store I've been looking for for a while.
