What makes this hot pot experience different from others is the soup. There are all kinds of adders and options... but in the end the soup really is quite delicious. Drink the soup before you start to get the natural flavor. The second thing that stands out about this hot pot experience is the display. The ring of meat around the hot pot was visually appealing. Decent hot pot restaurant with room for improvement and sneaky tactics. Came here around 5:30 PM with my family of 4 and there was only one other party. However, as we got closer to 7PM the restaurant really started filling up. I found this restaurant to be VERY!!! deceiving!!! because they charge money for the sauce bar without any mention of doing so. It is located on their menu but as the last item in such a non-discrete way. The sauce bar is also insanely expensive for what it is ($4). This alone left a bad taste in my mouth, capitalizing on customers in such a sneaky way! Their spicy broths are SPICY, so if you cannot handle spice, I would recommend mild. Meat cuts were good and we really enjoyed their shrimp paste. However, certain items like their fishballs were less than appetizing (tasted weirdly fried and also like they had sat in the freezer for way too long with a really hard rubbering texture). Vegetables came with a LOT of water, so I didn't feel like they really drained them after washing. Overall, this place was okay and I enjoyed my time. So I went back because they have a dim sum menu during the week, not on weekends, which is interesting because a lot of Chinese places mostly have dim sum on the weekends and not during the week. I have to say their dim sum was quite delicious, a little bit pricey but that's to be expected. However their pieces were quite large and I would highly recommend if you've never had dim sum to at least try it out because not a lot of places have it except if you are in New York or Philadelphia. The dim sum menu is a little limited as compared to typical Chinese places in the big cities but I got four things I would normally get and was quite pleased with them. read more

An okay a la carte hotpot experience that is not very beginner-friendly due to the language barrier. I've been here 3 times since 2018 and would consider myself a hotpot fan! But unfortunately, I will not be returning. I am a big fan of the soup base coming in an adorable cow-mascot shape, as well as the circular presentation surrounding the pot for the meat platter. However, I found the soup to be unnecessarily oily and some of the meat to be too thick/tough. There is an additional surcharge for access to the sauce bar and the a la carte ordering prevents customers from trying a variety of items, especially with only a party of two. I like the interior, and they have space for large parties, but I would say it's only good if you absolutely need hotpot and dont want to drive the extra miles to Edison. read more

Little kid feels unfair treatment and discrimination in this restaurant!!!! We went to Liu Yishou Hotpot Princeton today, and I really do not recommend it if you're bringing kids. My child had a strong experience of unfair treatment and kept asking me it that discrimination? I'm still trying to explain to him why unfair things happen in society. There was a claw machine there, and my kid wanted to play with it from the moment we walked in. They told us we could get two tokens to play after we paid the bill. But at that point, there were very few toys left in the machine, all crammed together, making it basically impossible to grab anything. I asked if a staff member could help rearrange the toys, but they quickly refused, saying they were too busy even it's 2pm, few customers in the restaurant. I let it go since the claw was very weak anyway. We let our kid try a couple of times and then told him we'd go somewhere else to play later. But when we start packing food, we saw four or five adults walk over with a bowl full of tokens that the staff had given them. The same staff member we talked to went with them, asked what toys they wanted, and gave them a whole bag of stuffed toys. My child then asked why they got so many tokens. Didn't they say they were too busy to deal with the machine? Why could those people go, and even get a whole bag of toys? Why she did things so unfair? Is she discrimination? As for tipping, the table next to us wanted to leave a 10% tip, and the staff told them that if they didn't leave 15%, they'd have to fill out a form and provide feedback. The customers were surprised and said, "It's like that?" and then just agreed to 15%. When I shared our experience today with friends in a WeChat group, many people spoke up about their own bad experiences. Some were even asked to leave a 20% tip. Others had loaded money onto a membership card but were later told they couldn't use it. One person said that because the place was crowded and they wanted to switch tables, the staff told them to carry the hotpot themselves--without even providing gloves--saying, "If you want to switch, carry it yourself." This is the first time I've ever reviewed a restaurant in one star, but honestly, if I can choose 0, I will write 0 star. It was just a terrible experience all around. read more

We'd never been before and got zero help in ordering from the waitress. Busboy had to help explain things since waitress spoke no English and menus is mostly in Chinese. She upsold is somehow on a sauce bar for $4 each which we didn't need or really use so that was a scam. The offering was so absurdly bad. And they were out of their core dumplings too which they told us well after we had ordered them. We ended up getting extremely spicy soup despite saying many times we wanted non spicy. The meatballs and dumplings came out legit frozen not fresh and took forever to cook. My daughter wouldn't eat anything due to spice so we managed to finish the food but $125 barely fed the three of us that did eat. It was so insanely Spicy we basically couldn't eat it without washing off with soy sauce or water. The experience was absolutely phenomenal. I really enjoyed the lamb & beef platter. My boyfriend loved the meatball platter. Especially the one that looked like a dumpling and had yellow filling. We both liked making our own sauces but definitely recommend a game plan before making your sauce. My boyfriends sauce was so salty and he didn't even end up using it. But with the shrimp they give a great sauce for dipping. The watermelon juice tasted super fresh. We got the mild recommended house special broth and the coconut chicken broth. We have pretty decent spice tolerances (we eat siracha with everything) and the mild tasted hot for us, so recommend this to anyone who loves spices. Liu Yi Shou offers up a solid Hotpot experience. It is a chain with about a dozen locations across the country, so they have the process down. We were here a few weeks ago. It will not be an inexpensive meal, but it's an alternate dining experience that adds some fun into a meal. The ordering of your meal can be a little confusing if you've never been to a Hotpot establishment. Each item from the broth, meats, seafood, tofu to the vegetables are ordered and priced separately, even the dipping sauces have an extra price per person. We started off by picking our cooking soup bases - went with Wild Mushroom and The Original Spicy. We preferred the Wild Mushroom; it was so full of flavor. We also chose the sliced beef, shrimp, vegetable platter, udon noodles and dipping sauces per person. It was a tasty experience. We ended up using only the Wild Mushroom base as our meal went on. We probably would not get the Udon Noodles again (or go for the Homemade Noodles). read more

We asked the server if he could help us since we were unfamiliar, and he explained briefly and then walked away my friends, and I sat there and looked at the menu for another 10 minutes and still were very baffled as to how everything work and how everything was priced individually no one ever came back to check on us so we decided to walk out and go for lunch elsewhere. It took me 40 years to find hot pot. To ring in my fourth decade on this earth, I celebrated with hot pot and ever since, I've been trying every spot I can find. This small chain in a strip mall off of Route 1 is probably my favorite. First off, it's clean. They really go out of their way to keep the place tidy. Sometimes the sauce bars at other places are a complete mess. Not here. The staff is always clearing plates off of tables. They're also super friendly and welcoming. Yes it can get expensive, but you get what you pay for. Unless you're me, you're not coming more than once-in-a-while. It's supposed to be communal and fun. Great for an event, but nice for just a simple meal. Either way, it's BYOB. The soup choices are great. I usually do a pork bone broth and a mild spicy. Beware, mild spicy is very spicy. I will cook in the bone broth and then dip and finish on the hot side. Everything is ala carte and not all-you-can-eat. You can't go wrong with the sliced pork and beef. There are a bunch of more exotic choices for those feeling adventurous. The selection isn't as wild as some other places I've been to, but the quality is very high. They have a variety of snacks as well to order. The sauce bar has a nice selection, but it's an additional, albeit necessary, extra. The atmosphere is great. Folks are generally in a good mood. I've very rarely been here where there isn't a short wait. I really can't say enough about the staff. They're so very attentive. I've seen reviews where people are critical of them, which is totally unfair. This hot pot thing really has me hooked and it's mostly because of this place. My family and I went to Liu Yi Shou last Saturday night, and I would recommend calling and making a reservation because there was a wait starting around 6/630. We ordered the two broth hotpot, one not spicy for the kids and one mild spicy for the adults. Wow, the previous reviews that said even the mild spicy was really spicy were accurate. It was so spicy that it wasn't enjoyable at all for my sister and I, and only my mom could tolerate the 'mild' spice level. I also wouldn't recommend the condiments/sauces/grapes and oranges bar unless you love them, because they charge $3.95pp (and there was 6 of us, half of which were kids that didn't use it for it to be worth the cost). read more

Lovely place with firey pots of super peppery broth that made my cough most of the time I was there. This is my second hot pot experience; the first being in Beijing last year. I wasn't too impressed with the food only the gorgeous presentation. Today's experience was much the same: boiled meat and seafood just aren't my thing. Nor is the somewhat heavy handed salemanship of the waitress who was cute, sincere and determined to get us to buy extras. We selected a meat platter of beautifully marbeled beef and lamb plus a vegetable platter. We selected a mushroom broth and a spicy broth. I can take a lot of heat and the broth was just over my line of tolerance. Once the broths came to the table, the waitress offered to prepare dipping sauces for us without noting a substantial charge. They were good but hardly worth the price. After our meat and veggies were eaten, we ordered hand cut noodles and shrimp. I ate the noodles and a couple shrimp but was tired of the effort after awhile. Our meal was $60 including tip which I find pricey for lunch. I'm really surprised there isn't a lunch menu. My companion is very familiar with hot pot and was thrilled. She'll be bringing her Chinese husband soon. This is odd but don't miss the chance to see the most beautiful tiled bathroom! 3 stars for no lunch menu and heavy handed sales and no mention of pricey sauce. I can't give them a fair food review because I didn't get the chance to eat here since the kitchen "wasn't prepped" when I arrived. This serves as an experiential review. I had this place book marked to try, and it did not go as planned. I had an early morning appointment on 03/23 nearby, and it was a cold day, so I thought hot pot would make a perfect lunch. I arrived at 11:00am, when they were supposed to open. I walked in as the receptionist arrived as well. He then asked me "can I help you?" to which I asked if they serve lunch. He told me that they no longer have their lunch menu options, so keep that in mind if you plan to head over for lunch. I then checked out the dinner menu and proceeded to request a table. The receptionist mentioned the kitchen would not be ready for at least another 30minutes. I left and didn't come back. Needless to say, don't come when they're supposed to open because you might not be able to get a table. I understand that it could've been situational, but personally won't be returning to find out. I should also add that multiple items on the menu were crossed out or replaced with something completely different. read more

Not all Liuyishou are the same even though they operate under the same name. The one in Flushing is good, ayce and no extra charge for the sauce station. Can't say the same for this one near Princeton, NJ. The service was lackluster and the waitress has a bad attitude like the whole world owes her. She was abrupt and impatient while we were ordering. The meat and vegetables were not fresh. We ordered medium spicy for the broth but for some reason it became spicier and spicier as you eat despite refilling more broth. Eventually it was not enjoyable even though we do have a high tolerance for spice. We spent $120 + tips for lunch for 2 which is steep considering the quality, quantity and service were not up to par. Will just have to go to Flushing for our hot pot fix. They are only able to stay in business because there are no other hot pot restaurants nearby. read more

We found multiple pieces of plastic in our meat! The response we got for this was the "plastic is not poisonous" and that the pieces of plastic of were from the packaging the meat was in. The plastic was so well hidden/embedded into the meat that we didn't even realize they were there untill we saw pieces floating in the soup base. And the most unfortunate part is we only noticed 3/4 of the way through the plate. Who knows how much plastic we ingested. HaiDiLao wouldn't allow this at all. Additionally, the price of the soup bases were misleading. We were charged $8.95 for the wild mushroom soup base and $6.55 for the house special pork bone soup base. This was not stated anywhere on the menu. The only soup bases that had a price to them were the specialty soup base, none of which we chose. If you plan to do dipping sauces, you must purchase a set of sauces for $2.99 (comes with cilantro, green onion, sesame paste, sesame oil, onion, red peppers). I would suggest one set for 2 people as once you buy a single set, you will have the ability to obtain other sauces like shacha and soy sauce. The only real pro to Liuyishou was meat portions were larger than expected. Other than that, I will be sticking to HaiDiLao hotpot as they would be appalled if they served dishes with pieces of plastic in them. read more

This was our first experience at a hot pot place, and we so wanted to love it! The idea of picking a soup base and then putting your own toppings sounded interesting! What's even better is they have pots split into two or three section and have different soup bases in the same pot. We got ourselves a two flavored pot, wild mushroom and other a spicy soup base. The mushroom soup was tasty and had a fullness to it, whilst the other one was a watery soup, with a lot of crushed peppers and oil in it. They have very minimal chicken options, and most of the meats are pork and beef based. We got some tofu, shrimp, noodles, and bunch of other veggies. The kids really enjoyed the whole process and loved the shrimp, it was a different experience for us, but somehow did not really feel satiating! So we ordered one fried rice from the menu, which was below average at the best, the quantity was meagre too! I think you really need to know how and what to order at a hot pot place to make it an enjoyable experience. To make matters worse, the staff was hardly able to communicate in English when asked questions, so better do your homework if it's going to be your first time. The sauce and condiments bar was pretty good, however we were charged $10 ($2.5 per person, kids charged as well) and the overall meal costed about $50, an expensive affair for what we got, don't think we will be trying again. read more

First time trying hot pot. Staff was very helpful with whipping up dipping sauces. We ordered 2 sets but would have been fine with one. We picked our own veg and protein But later I wished we asked for recommendations. Some of the things we picked were a bit too unwieldy. Broth had a good heat and they offered to let us take the leftovers home. For me, hot pot is like fondue - entertaining but a lot of work and the food itself is just ok. It's boiled protein and veg. Recommend the fried pork, shrimp, and marinated beef. Do NOT recommend the scallops - they were frozen, expensive, took forever to cook and didn't taste appealing.
