We unknowingly showed up a little before closing. Nothing was said directly to us but we were loudly talked about by our server. If they would have said something we would have gone elsewhere but I didn't realize why she was upset until after we ordered food. The food was ok but nothing really special. We had a wonderful dinner yesterday. Our server, Amber went above and beyond to check with Chef regarding food allergies. She is a gem and made a great meal even better. We felt that she truly cared if we were satisfied with our meals. She served our meal efficiently in well timed courses. We ordered Whitefish and Salmon entrees. Both were prepared perfectly. Since we were celebrating an anniversary, they provided the attached Baked Alaska. It was a sweet ending to a delicious meal. Michael. Stopped in for lunch on our way to Indy for work. Cute little town with a lot of history, and this place is definitely part of it. We opted for the pub side and it felt like you were transported in time. The bar area is pretty dark, but not unwelcoming. It's pretty cozy, as far as bars go. Service was decently fast and nice. Right off the bar my coke was very flat. Didn't taste quite right. I asked for another, same situation. Not sure the issue there. Both my coworker and I opted for the half sandwich and soup. He had the french onion and turkey sandwich and I had the chowder and turkey sandwich. I totally regret not getting the french onion.. it looked amazing! My chowder was.. meh. Too sweet for my liking.. just tasted off. Maybe just me, but I wasn't a fan. The sandwiches were good.. thick with fresh layers. No complaints there. The sun was setting and Dawn, our server, approached the table. She was delightful and the food was spectacular. The whitefish spread with homemade crackers was the best I've ever had. Followed by a very generous portion of the most tender pot roast with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Classic place for prime rib or a large group celebrating a life event, not so much for brunch. Unfortunately we stop in for brunch, and although they do have brunch specials (4 items) and a lunch menu, you could do better at the local Denny's for brunch, Hey don't get me wrong, its a nice place, with decent service, but they aren't set up for brunch. Both are meal can out luke warm, at best, the cook forgot to put on the heat lamp (I guess - that's what we heard the server asking the cook). My omelette was over cook and the grilled potatoes were cold. The grilled cheese sandwich was barely grilled - the cheese was cold in the middle, but the tomato soup was a hit. So its a Marshall tradition, but I would try it for dinner. read more

Went there in between sets with my band mates as we were in town for the big music festival in July. I had the double napkin brisket sandwich and it was DELICIOUS! The sweetness of the pickles contrasted well with the spicy jalapeños in the bread. Just an amazing meal across the board. Great service too and large portions. I have always wanted to come here. We sat at the bar at 1:30 pm, on a Ftiday ( we are on vacation). We literally had 1 cup of soup and 1 drink each. There was noone else sitting at the bar The bartender gave us our bill, she never asked if we wanted another drink, nothing. Very cold atmosphere. I was very disappointed. I never complain either. Had an excellent dinner Halloween night! The food has definitely improved since the last time we were there. This time I had the wedge salad, pot roast and spiced caked for dessert and all three were delicious! Happy to see the wedge salad back on the menu! My husband had the special which was a meatloaf and the baked Alaska dessert and he loved both of them too! Excellent service, friendly and attentive! What a gem! Schuler's is a classic, wonderful restaurant full of history, professional service, and delicious food! Wanted to support this business after the Covid-19 restaurant shutdowns, and was able to get a reservation for Valentines Day. The night was so awesome - service was attentive and pleasant, food and drinks hit the spot, and it was just a great night out! Split the traditional cheese/cracker plate, a "Lovers Salad", filet mignon, crab stuffed walleye, and a sinful chocolate cake for dessert. Can't recommend enough - we love Schuler's! read more

Saw signs for this place all over the highway and a friend who had already been there insisted we go. It seems like the most well known place for this adorable town of Marshall. Very charming and cozy even though this is a fairly large restaurant. Beautifully decorated for Christmas as well. We went on a Wednesday night so it was not busy but I'm sure it gets busy on weekends. Our server was great, super friendly and accommodating. I do think they are probably more well known for their steak and beef dishes. I wasn't in the mood for that and ended up getting the ravioli. I didn't think it was that great but like I said, I don't think that's what they are known for so I wouldn't hold that against them. My friend had the burger and really seemed to like it. Their ranch is homemade and delish, we also really liked their homemade beer cheese served with crackers at the start. My favorite thing was dessert. The signature toasted coconut snowball was amazing. Toasted coconut rolled on top of a giant scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, on top of hot fudge, YUM! On our way to a weekend in South Haven, hubby, my folks, and I stopped in to Schuler's for lunch. It was delicious, and the service was outstanding. Mom and I ordered the seafood chowder, which is as good as seafood chowder gets. Dad and I split a crab cake sandwich, which was crispy and flavorful, and served on a fresh brioche bun with remoulade. Hubby also ordered the crab cake sandwich, which he, too, liked. Our server, Kelsey, was awesome! She was attentive without being intrusive, and she went the extra length to make sure our lunch was enjoyable. Schuler's doesn't offer a 1/2 sandwich, but because Dad and I wanted to split it, Kelsey had the kitchen cut it in two and she served it on separate plates. Dad had wanted coleslaw and I had wanted french fries, and even though we were supposed to pick one or the other, Kelsey brought me a 1/2 order of fries and served Dad the coleslaw he wanted. Schuler's is a really solid restaurant, with great food, great service, and a unique atmosphere. If you're anywhere near Marshall, Michigan, you should make time to visit and eat. read more

I got a tip from a local to eat downstairs in Winston's pub for equal food at cheaper rates. We did just that as we are cheap. It was my mom, dad and me on the way home after a weekend visiting friends, me in Kalamazoo and them in Battle Creek respectively. It made sense to carpool. We stopped off here as we all wanted a bite pretty soon after we started out. We started with a combo appetizer platter which had Schuler meatballs, chicken drums, potato skins, cheese spread, carrot and celery sticks, and house-made crackers for 12 bucks. Honestly two of us could have happily split it for lunch, we should have just gotten soup with it. The cheese spread is so much better than that crap you get at the grocery store. The portions of each item are ginormous too. Not realizing it would be a major graze we all got sandwiches too. I had a reuben with turkey, tavern slaw and Swiss cheese grilled on Schuler's cranberry walnut bread, with cranberry relish on the side. Yummy stuff. I should have gotten a loaf of the bread to go as they sell it. My dad ate a french dip with prime rib, grilled onion and Swiss cheese on an asiago ciabatta roll, au jus for dipping on the side. He really enjoyed it. My mom got a bistro grilled chicken sandwich with smoked gouda, avocados, tomatoes, baby greens and salsa verde on house-made focaccia. Everything was super fresh and the flavors made her happy. We ended up trucking a bunch of stuff back to the area leftover wise, luckily my parents are the be prepared type and already had a cooler in the back. yep that so does not happen when I road trip solo or even with James. Our waitress was very informative about the history of the restaurant and we enjoyed hearing about it. The food was really good. I mean the bruschetta was so amazing, it disappeared fast. A dinosaur of the restaurant world. I remember scooping crackers full of Schuler's cheese dip as a kid...I had heard they had a restaurant in Michigan and finally made my way there on a recent trip to Chicago. I do love the feeling of the restaurant. I doubt it's changed much since it revamped from a bowling alley to a restaurant. It's clear that there's much pride & nostalgia to Schuler's for many people just by walking in. There's a whole slew of Touristy breads and syrups and high ball glasses with the Schuler logo. It's an establishment that appears to be banking on it's own hyped up "fame." To start off, the hostess was nothing short of rude. I don't normally comment on the service unless it's one of the extremes: great or terrible. The hostess gave us a terrible first impression. We walk up and she goes, "Can I help you with something?" In a very unenthusiastic tone. Let's see here, oh we're standing in the entrance to a restaurant...I think that means we would like to dine here...?! We look inside the monolith of a dining room and not even half of the tables were full, yet she stood there whistling a song to herself while looking at some chart on the wall for a good minute or so. My husband and I exchanged a serious of perplexed looks. What in the world was that?! I mean, we were driving home from a whirlwind weekend in Chicago so we weren't in our Sunday best or anything but we surely weren't in any state where we should be treated like that. The rest of the meal was just ok. The cheese spread was dry & crusty on the outside as if they had prepped it a day ago. Nasty. Come on, Schuler's! This is one thing you're known for! Maybe don't deliver it dried up and sad in a little plastic ramekin. Weak. On to the entrees...I ordered the Turkey Pot Pie & my husband got the Prime Rib, Michigan Cut (9 oz) ...the regular cut is a whopping 11oz slab of beef! My pot pie was pretty good, the crust was a bit much. I'd have liked less crust and more filling but the savory gravy & white meat turkey was pretty delicious. I just wish there were more turkey morsels in there. My husband had a bit of a Ron Swanson moment with the prime rib. He really enjoyed it, but even with the Michigan Cut, still couldn't finish all that beef! It came on a big oval plate in a nice savory beef au jus sauce. If that's not a meal for a man's man, then I don't know what is. It is the saving grace from me giving Schuler's 2 stars. Dessert was coconut rolled ice cream with chocolate sauce. I was disappointed in the mediocre quality of the chocolate sauce but it was a good combination of flavors. Schuler's seems to be riding on it's own coat tails of decades past. I just don't see what the hype is about. I get tradition. I do. But something needs updating at Schuler's and I think what they're missing is taste to match their steep prices. I don't mind paying big $ for great cuisine. What I do mind is paying big $ for mediocre, resting on it's own laurels/reputation cuisine. I think Schuler's needs a tour from ghosts of Restaurant Years Past...or it might just bite the dust when older generations fade away...a relic of Restaurants past...Step it up a few notches, Schuler's! read more

Came to town from Grand Rapids on business with a fellow employee. He suggested we try this place because of the cheese. I was not disappointed at all! We choose to eat in the pub, the prices of the restaurant were a little too step for me ($$$ range). For an appetizer we had the Cheese and cracker platter. The cheese spread had lite hint of horse radish and was delicious. The platter itself came with bread, crackers, celery, and sweet potatoe slices. A side of ranch dressing and butter also accompanied it. For the entree We both went with the Two napkin beef brisket. The brisket was sliced nice and thin and was topped with a very liberal drenching of barbecue sauce. What initially struck me as odd was the sweet pickle on it, but in contrast with the in house baked jalapeño bread, it was a perfect blend of flavored. The history of this place is pretty impressive...this site has been continuously used as a hotel or inn since 1870. It has been owned and operated by the Schuler family since 1924. Marshall is a quaint, small, mid-Michigan town known for its many buildings on the National Historic Register and Schuler's Restaurant is the dining centerpiece of the town. The restaurant is known, at least in name, to most Michiganders. While on business in the K-zoo area, I stopped in for a late lunch/dinner while navigating the trip home on I-94 East. I started with their popular Swiss Onion Soup followed by Schuler's signature (go ahead and splurge) Classic Prime Rib of Beef "in the English tradition". My business colleague grabbed the more typical lunch fare with the Classic Grilled Reuben. Both were solid choices that fueled us up for the long drive home. Very cool place to stop for in for lunch and absorb some history at the same time. Great downtown to do some antiquing. read more

Get it at least once. Ill ask for end cut next time to try some extra seasoning. Horseradish sauce needs a little more zip. Swiss onion soup is very good. Thick and rich. It has deep deep flavor probably from long hours cooking with prime rib leftovers. Seafood chowder is good. Flavorful. Shulers salad is pretty good. My family and I (party of 8) came this evening for Christmas Eve dinner for a 630pm reservation. Pros: nice decor, large dining space cons: THE WAIT! salad arrive at 750pm, entrees arrived at 816pm. Granted it is a holiday so I'm sure they were busy, however, taking an hour and 20 to receive the salad is ridiculous. My husband also ordered a medium rare NY strip but it definitely came out medium- well or almost well done. The waitress said they had been having trouble with NY strips all night?! And you still serve it?! Food and service was disappointing to say the least. Not a good choice for Christmas Eve. The kitchen and staff seemed underprepared. read more

Market sentiment suggested the prime rib, but sometimes I'm not blown away by prime rib the way one is supposed to be, so I opted against spending $32 for the presumed best item in favor of diversification. The burger was giant and juicy. The fries were nothing special. The "famous" barbecue meatballs are basically meatballs in barbecue sauce. You won't regret trying them but it's not mandatory. I would, however, steer you toward the Swiss onion soup, a flavor powerhouse topped with gruyere and parmesan. The free cheese spread gets a jolt from horseradish. Haven't tried out the pub. My mom and I don't live in Michigan and they were kind of brisk and sudden in ushering us to our table and we didn't realize it was a kind of fancy setting (only ones in casual wear) but that was just an unexpected thing for our experience. Not a huge menu but I ordered the salmon - comes with delicious asparagus, crunchy but not too crunchy and mashed potatoes - those were very creamy. The salmon was amazing and soaked in butter. My mom got the Walleye fish with the same sides but she didn't find the fish as good. I'd have to say a good restaurant and to get the salmon! read more

We stopped by for lunch and saw a billboard for this place. We thought we'd give it a try, and weren't disappointed at all. The service was very attentive and friendly, and the food was good and reasonably priced. The fries were fluffy and crispy. Probably the best I've ever tasted. The prime rib and burgers are fantastic, and the chicken sandwich I had was so flavourful. They cater well for kids, offering the typical meals, but all freshly cooked and and were thought of very highly by my two kids. Then for dessert the kids can build their own ice cream sundae with a number of choices of toppings brought out to the table. A lot of fun for little one. If I lived closer I would definitely eat here more often. read more

This place instantly became our new favorite!! We flew into Brookes airport and they came within minutes to pick us up and everyone was so friendly! Great to see the place busy on a Sunday, we sat outside on a beautiful sunny day, they have patio heaters if you get chilly. Must try their famous Schuler"s Pub cheese, Seafood chowder was delicious and we had the Brisket sandwich on Jalepeno focaccia and Pulled chicken pesto grilled cheese Yum !!!! The food was sublime, the service by Zack, our waiter was engaging, and, for me as an outsider, I found it very heartwarming to see a place that was dedicated to the historic aspects of this area. Schuler's is inviting right as you turn onto Eagle St. we were seated promptly by friendly hostesses, and our waitress appeared almost immediately to introduce herself, and to ask if this was a first or return visit. It was our first- my husband, his colleague/friend and me. We started with cocktails- I had the cucumber cooler, and our friend tried the Schuler's beer. Great! Appetizers we shared: roasted Brussels Sprouts, and cauliflower cakes served in a bed of girls greens with green goddess dressing. Everything is fresh and homemade- from dressing to breads to the buttery pot roast I ordered. I managed to get through half! My husband had been twice burned these past couple of weeks when he ordered prime rib rare. This was cooked perfectly! Our friend had a salad with grilled chicken, and it was quite a platter! He loved it. We all caved to the thick slabs of fresh bread. What an overall satisfying experience! Our waitress Holly was skilled and well trained. She really knew her menu, and was attentive without hovering. This town and the buildings downtown are a must see. We walked around the restaurant and read the stories and quotes under and above the photographic murals In the dining room and halls. Better than ever dining experience dispite the CCP virus! We chose an outdoor table and it was perfect eventhough there was minor road construction on the block. Perfect sunset weather. Kelsey, our server, took our drink orders quickly, and soft drinks never ran dry for my boys. Are order included Salmon Portofino, Chicken Caprese, Winston Burger, and Full rack of Chipotle Ribs. Ribs were nicely sauced with plenty of meat on the bone. A "doggie" box was needed. Spent bones were literally given to our dogs. Chicken Caprese had a thick layer of mozzarella tomato, and tangy sauce. Schulers mash potatoes were an excellent balance, along with fresh green beans. Salmon was perfectly done, flakey, with a dash of heat. I got one small taste from my wife. :-) Winston burger hit the mark with my son. With his food allergies (wheat, and dairy), Schulers might want to include a gluten free burger bun on the menu. I recommend a 1/2 yard of beer (any flavor) as it got people looking. This is a great place to eat dinner. When I travel through the area and stay in Marshall I have always ordered carry out. This week I did the same thing and like always leave a 10% tip. Just checked my credit card statement and I was charged a $20 tip on a $12 item. They probably took me for a guy who wouldn't check my credit card statement. I have photos for work reimbursement.
