Had a very unfortunate experience at Schuler's last evening. I was with a 30-ish number of people for a pre-ordered dinner. Being the first time I was there I expected a pleasant well-made dinner. Since it was a large group there was an expectation of some delays in service. We were seated on arrival and enjoyed attentive service albeit a bit long until salads were served. Approximately 20-25 mins.later entrees were served. I was aware that prime rib was this restaurant's claim to fame BUT the meal arrived "swimming" in red fluid infiltrating the mashed potatoes served on the plate. Asparagus spears were very fibrous inspite of using a steak knife. The piece of beef was at least 1/3 fat and without a crust. At best the meat was shy of medium rare. It was difficult to slice using a steak knife and was tough with much gristle. I tried a few pieces of meat which had little flavor. Dessert was then served without the dinner plate being removed from table. The surprise of the night: an automatic tip of 23.5% with a surcharge of 3.5% if a card was used for payment. I expected an automatic tip for a large party but...really? This is not a restaurant I'd return to or recommend. And I'd also imagine the wait staff isn't seeing much of that 23.5% tip. This place has gotten very expensive, as have many restaurants. Worse, the service has slipped. My family went into the pub and were given our water. That was it. We watched others seated long after us get their orders taken. Finally, after almost 15 minutes, we got up and left. Definitely expect better from this restaurant. read more

A Michigan institution! I had been to Schuler's a few times when I lived in Battle Creek and recently went back to meet up with a friend from the west side of the state. You have to try their famous cheese spread! Their lunch and dinner menu offers plenty of salads, soups, fish, meat, and chicken entrees as well as burgers and sandwiches. On our last visit, my mom and her friend both had the fish fry and said it was excellent. I had the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato bisque soup. The sandwich was amazing! They have a full bar. I don't believe I have ever had a cocktail while visiting, but will say their coffee is AMAZING! Service has always been friendly and attentive. They have a great parking lot and the location is right near downtown Marshall. I can't wait to visit again! read more

Schuler's is a Michigan classic! I drive back and forth from Chicago to Detroit often. The drive can be a bit of a drag, so I treat myself by stopping at Schuler's for a delicious snack or sometimes a well deserved lunch. The restaurant is soooo charming and the food and service are always top notch. The place is an over-all delight! This most recent visit My hubby and I shared appetizers; I had a glass of wine and he had a beer. Of course we got the Herritage Cheese Spread. It is one of my most favorite things ever. You can find it in some grocery stores, and although it is delicious, nothing can compare to actually eating it in the restaurant. They also serve with these amazing pewter pieces, and I just love them. I have a thing about tableware and props. We also split the Brussels Sprouts and the Barbecue Meatballs. Yumm and yumm. We always opt to sit in the pub side and the atmosphere is just perfect. If you ever find yourself in the vicinity of Marshall Michigan, do yourself a favor and stop by Schuler's! read more

I probably would have given this 5 stars for the taste and quality of service, but the prices were too high. I did enjoy the prime rib on sour dough bread. It was like an open face sandwich. I chose the end cut as it is usually well done. I loved that they give you creamy horseradish too. The Brussel sprouts were delicious as was the garlic mashed potatoes (I tasted my friends since I ordered French fries). I'd recommend trying this place out if you're in the area. read more

I've been here before and had exceptional service with Burdette as our waiter. Prime rib was done to perfection as he made sure even though I like it no pink/well he made sure they cooked longer 10 min in Au Jus and it came out perfect, mouth watering! Hardly ate the veggies! TODAY not the case, too red and when waitress brought it back, it was chargrilled! Really?? If you're spending $50 on Prime Rib, you should get how you asked, not how the cook wants to make it. He threw on a grill??? Waitress Nikki was not attentive as last visit, just going through the motions. In town and had always wondered what this place was like. We had lunch. The turkey reuben was good, but for the price, I'd think it was going to be better. The environment seems confused. The entire experience at Schulers was 5 star. Our waitress was polite, responsive, and took note of a specific way we wanted one of our food items cooked. The food came out looking fantastic, presentation was great and you could tel right away this food was homemade, from the designs they did with the breading to the quality of the food presented. The taste was just as amazing, you can tell the chefs and staff here know what they are doing. So far this is the best place to eat in the area! This is a review for Winston's Pub connected to Schuler's. Came in for an early dinner on a Saturday night. When we came in it was seat yourself, so we did, and waited a while to get anyone to give us menus. We even watched other tables get sat after us but helped before us. So this was not a good start the dinner. After we went up and asked a manger if we were sitting in a wrong area, we got a server right away. Waitress offered us the cheese and crackers for the wait, which was really nice, and they were really good. As far as the food, we ended up ordering the meatballs and pretzel with beer cheese, both were really great. I am glad the other people I was with wanted to try the pretzels bites and cheese or else I would have just gotten the meatballs, and the pretzels were definitely the better way to go. They came out hot and fresh, and the beer cheese was perfect. Not saying there was anything wrong with the meatballs but the pretzels were that much better. I decided to go with the 2-napkin beef brisket sandwich (no mayo), and opted for the sweet potato fries. I was SOOOOO HAPPY with my meal, everything was so delicious. The sandwich was better then I expected, and I was really happy I decided to go with it despite the jalapeno bread they use. There was very little spiciness to it and actually tasted really light and fresh. The sandwich was really easy to eat as far as the beef being tender and the bread not being too heavy. So many times the bread can almost bee too much and you can't taste anything else inside the sandwich, but this was not the case for this sandwich. Also GO WITH THE SWEET POTATO FRIES!! Needless to say with how delicious everything was and how great our server was, we totally forgot about the confusion to start , and glad we decided to stick it out. They finished strong. With adjustment in ownership, focus of business, I remain a loyal local customer. Food choices remain stable, with take out and dining service for all food choices. Less dining choices, but offering special for home preparation. I presume it's to allow the homemaker, to have a special meal at home, with the prep at their kitchen. I expect them to be competing into the next 10 years, but it will be tough. Overall the new diners are not interested in gourmet, but value taste and convenience. VSS read more

I went to Winston's Pub over the weekend (which is in the middle of Schuler's Restaurant) as they had the cheaper menu with more of the kind of food I tend to enjoy. The food was great, however, the service was less to be desired. When we arrived, the sign said to seat ourselves, so we did. However, the next three groups were greeted by a hostess, taken to tables, and their drink orders were put in as we sat and watched without even a menu to look at. After the third party was seated, despite the service staff seeing us waiting, we finally got up to ask if we needed to be seated to get service. After that, Regan (our waitress) took great care of us and even gave us a free Heritage Cheese & Crackers appetizer because of our initial wait. The infamous Heritage Cheese was good, but not out of this world. We ordered the Beer Cheese & Pretzel Bites and Schuler's Barbeque Meatballs as our appetizers for the table to try and they were pretty good. Definitely go with the Pretzel Bites as they are made fresh with a Beer Cheese that comes with quite a kick. There was enough cheese left over to use to dip our fries and chips in for our entrees. The meatballs were standard and I do not see how they are "a famous tradition". I ordered the Honey-Bitten Chicken Burger (without avocado or lettuce) with a side of chips. Although the chips are good, the fries are actually really good - and the sweet potato fries are even better! You can't go wrong with whatever you pick. The Chicken Burger was good, with a little kick due to the chipotle mayo and pepper jack cheese, but I don't think it is a $15 sandwich. I finished it pretty quickly due to its size and could use a better presentation. It also came with unadvertised tomato and onions. As our night started with slow service, it also ended with slow service as we had to wait a long time for our bill, and had to ask three times to two different wait staff members for our box to go. It's unfortunate, as I thought all of the food was fantastic and the food actually came out at good times...but it was the before and after that was undesirable. read more

We meet our family from Detroit often in Marshall. We have been to Winston's inside Schuler's a few times and are always pretty satisfied. They seem to make a lot of items from scratch, corned beef, cheese spread, crackers, etc. This trip we had a Rubin which was pretty good and a cobb salad which had a good amount of toppings. We also had a sample plate of appetizers: the wings were my favorite (super crunchy and the sauce is sweet and spicy), my wife loved the meatballs (which I didn't much care for) and every one was fighting for the pretzels with cheese. The only real disappointment was the $8 seafood chowder. It lacked flavor. You couldn't taste the shrimp, crab, or clams, and the entire dish lacked seasoning. It doesn't taste of the ocean. It didn't even have a creamy or buttery flavor. I wish I had sent it back. But overall, everything is pretty good. read more

Having lived most of my life in Michigan, I've heard of Schuler's for years. I always pictured a very traditional, staid, clubby and somewhat formal restaurant that probably didn't have much that a vegetarian could eat. Now that I've been there - twice - I'm happy to say that I was wrong on most counts (you CAN feel the tradition). First, the food. There are plenty of veg options. On my first visit (dinner), I ordered the eggplant roulade. This often-pedestrian roll-up had an intense but not overwhelming tomato sauce over thinly-cut eggplant slices surrounding asparagus stalks. For lunch, I ordered So Much More Than a Veggie Burger. It was - house-made and unique, blending quinoa, black beans, oats and more. Ultra-Yum! Every bit of food we ate showed attention to detail. The french fries were perfectly al dente, strawberries richly ripe, crackers crispy and artful, bread crusty outside and moist inside. Second, the atmosphere and service. The room was not stuffy in the least. Light adages (e.g., In Vino Veritas, how to treat people well, etc.) appear near the ceiling. It's a comfortable setting for friends or family. Service was excellent, from entrance to exit. Our servers perceived our mood and needs and acted accordingly. They were friendly without being cloying. If you seek a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere, I heartily recommend Schuler's. read more

Dated and dark limited menu. Food was okay but nothing was a oh my this is great Turkey rueben was inedible and cold to the point the cheese was hard. The bbq sandwich was ok but had a acidic aftertaste. Seafood chowder was ok somewhat fishy. Chips hard and tasteless. $34 bottle of wine you can find for $13 online. But tasted good. Cut our loses and didn't try dessert. Waitress was very nice. Loud overbearing party nearby. All in all a disappointment. May have been good at some year ago but definitely has lost something. This place is in my friend's restaurant list for long time. We drove to Schuler's yesterday afternoon for dinner. We were satisfied by our sensitive waiter who is good at timing to come so our chat wouldn't be interrupted. I love the beef brisket flatbread. Cocktails there are very good.
