Schuler's is our go-to for a special evening. Dinner on December 26 was family gathering with my mother, her sister, my siblings and their spouses as well as my husband, son & I. We had a little bit of everything on the menu - meatballs and bread & cheese spread for appetizers, soups, salads and a variety of entrees. Everything was delicious!. And, we topped it all off with the Hummingbird Cake and Peppermint Ice Cream Pie. Our service was spectacular - there was never an empty glass, every request was met and she smiled and was awesome. Nice to know this classic is still good!! Have many fond memories of eating at Schuler's for special occasions when I was a kid. Went for lunch after Christmas shopping with friends downtown. I had the Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich on gluten-free bread, and it was delicious. My friends all enjoyed their grilled cheese and tomato soup. And of course we started with the famous bar cheese and crackers - yummy!! My only beef (no pun intended) is that the prices are sky high, and there's a fee added for credit cards, which is ridiculous in this day and age. Regardless, I'll be back! read more

We took a road ramble over to Marshall on a sunny Saturday and stopped in at Schuler's for dinner before heading back home. The atmosphere is fun. We ate in the pub section. It's a bit pricey because it's a famous restaurant in the area but the food was excellent. We got a couple of the sandwiches to split. We got the Winston's French Dip and the Two Napkin Beef Brisket sandwich. Both were delicious and came with fries. The service was friendly and helpful. read more

Iconic restaurant and pub in downtown Marshall that is absolutely charming inside, we ate by a roaring fire (tad toasty) and the decor screams old eclectic, please never change it, never. Food was delicious. We had an appetizer of Brussel sprouts and they were cooked and seared with bacon on top. Appetizer is big enough to share and they have a meatball appetizer too. My only blah item was the French onion soup, never should you alter that and they do, I read it had Swiss cheese and ignored it, it should never be Swiss and ther should be a nice crusty bread to soak up the clear broth, nope this one is creamy with a super sized wafer, just warning you. The French Dip sandwich was super tender with a wonderful flavor with raves that it was maybe the best ever with a side of battered fries. Extra good place to eat and a unique old school dining charm, the table cloth is changed each setting and the meals come out with the charming metal domes. A must eat here spot when in this charming town, bring your appetite and some extra money is required, but worth it. Excellent service. read more

On June 20th, we celebrated our 51st Anniversary at Win Schuler's in Marshall, Michigan. Reservations were made through Mr. Tyler Asher, Manager. He was professional & cordial. Upon arrival, we were seated by the fireplace. Mr. Asher returned to our table several times to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Our waiter, Burdette, attended to our every request. He was fun & professional in every way. During the meal, Mr. Asher arranged for, two very nice coffee mugs to be delivered to our table, as a gift from Win Schuler's. The prime rib was excellent. I have been all over the country eating prime rib, my favorite food item. This includes John Elways's restaurant in Denver, Ruth Crisp, Mortons, Flemings, Detroit's Prime and Proper/London Chophouse, the original Peter Lugers in Brooklyn, Smith and Wollensky, etc. This is restaurant makes the most amazing and best prime rib ever including great salad, homestyle atmosphere (Cheersesque), great staff, great veggies, amazing home baked cookies for dessert and generous wine and scotch pours. It is also located in one of the cutest small towns in all of Michigan. And finally, no fruffy prices and affectations. read more

This was something new on the menu at Winston's Pub. Galumpki. Polish recipe. Seasoned beef with rice wrapped in cabbage. A nice red sauce with perfect spice covered the Galumpki, a nice helping of mash potatoes and delicious green beans with onions. Paired with a refreshing Schuler's Pino Grigio this was an excellent filling meal. As always great service from Lindsey. Stopped in for lunch. Ordered some sandwiches and had the Schulers Barbeque Meatballs for an appetizer. Never had meatballs in a stein before but hey - A+ for presentation, and hey, they were yummy. They're doused in this BBQ sauce, which is addicting. On the advice of the server, I ordered the Two Napkin Beef Brisket Sandwich. And so glad I did! It was delicious! This was and still is our regular stop on our way to Chicago and back home. My mother and stepfather love this place. It's a popular spot for travelers and surrounding people I'm sure. It has that cozy comfy feel of family here. I feel like this is a great restaurant for comfort food. My stepfather loves their hearty entrée dishes. We would often get the smoked whitefish spread, which would come with their house-made crackers for our starter. I had to get a side salad from here as well. My mom would get the pecan crusted chicken dish, she liked that it was stuffed with broccoli and spinach. I would get the classic Swiss onion soup and the north Atlantic salmon as my main entrée. This was always our halfway point and food stop on the way home from visiting my aunts and uncles in Chicago. The food is consistent and decent, the staff is always warm and friendly. Win win. Sometimes life gives you lemons and today, Schuler's made it a wonderful lemonade kind of day. Lucky me for they were off the radar and not on my plans until things didn't work out and I did the old fashioned thing and just drove around until I saw something interesting and unusual that I knew must be good. You just can't beat good vibrations. I don't know how I missed them online, to be honest with you. And thank Gods I didn't. Anyway, anybody who's anybody apparently knows Schuler's is steeped in history and is one of those places so far as I know doesn't rest on their laurels. They bake the bread, they prepare the beef, and I'm sure go through a great many other unsung lengths to make this place special. Even the cod in the fish and chips is fresh, not frozen. This place. What a real treat. I'm only in town for a few days and now I have to plan around coming back just to try several things off the menu I can't live without knowing what if. I'm always more comfortable on the Winston Pub kinda side of things and went in for that two napkin brisket sandwich just because and with my Texas roots, I half expected mediocrity. Umn no. That was awesome. And the focaccia was woooo boy. I don't even like focaccia to be honest but this one. Mind blown. Lucky me. Top notch hospitality too. Exemplary. In spite of having lived in one corner of southern Michigan or another all my life and knowing "Win Schuler's" as a watchword for fine dining (more so before the upsurge of enthusiasm for all things local and artisanal) I'd never made it here. My sister suggested it for a recent holiday meetup, and I was eager to see what the fuss was about. Schuler's is an old school (mostly) steak and seafood place and seems to do what they do well. My group stuck mainly with the lower-priced sandwich menu, and were happy with what we got. My wife ordered the chicken salad, which featured fried chicken strips sold a la carte as "really good chicken tenders." They lived up to that billing, juicy with a good savory and crisp breading. Other elements of the salad were pretty average, but overall she thought it was a good call. I got the french dip sandwich and was impressed. I don't know if the beef on it came from Schuler's celebrated and pricy prime rib, but it was flavorful, tender, and stacked high. The garlic-parmesan bread gave it some unexpected zing, and the dipping jus was the best I've ever had. I think there was more beef flavor packed into that cup of liquid than some steaks I've eaten have delivered. Fries on the side were nicely done, though it took a couple of reminders to the server to bring me a bottle of ketchup. Others at the table ordered the pot pie, brisket sandwich, and turkey reuben, and seemed satisfied with them. Winston's Pub in the Schuler's Restaurant because I didn't want to wait to be seated and there were open tables and a "seat yourself" sign in the pub. Easy, quick, comfortable. I don't know if they have the same menu or what, but it was still quite good. Chicken wings to start had some of the very best blue cheese with them. An unexpectedly large portion of wings were delicious and not spicy at all, easy to eat and shovel some of the super-chunky blue cheese with them. For main course, I chose the salmon and asked for no mashed potatoes but double Brussels sprouts. The salmon was a reasonable portion, cooked properly and the sprouts were delicious. This place is great! The atmosphere, service, and food are all top-notch. We were promptly greeted, and seated. Our server, Mitzi wasn't far behind and was very efficient and pleasant. She's awesome. The decor is wonderful, and unique. The main dining room is on three levels, each a step down. Everything is very clean. Tablecloths, nice thick cloth napkins, and pewter dishes for the napkin/silverware service and appetizers was a nice touch. There's also a separate bar area that looked fun. But we sat in the main dining room. Speaking of appetizers, the Heritage Cheese Spread Platter is a plateful of veggies and their famous cheese spread (better than their store brand by the way), along with crackers, bread and butter. A must try for only $8. We both had the Walleye. It was cooked to perfection, and served with some amazing mashed potatoes, capers and green beans. It was absolutely perfect. This place is obviously very well managed. It's over 100 years-old. Their experience shows. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. We drove nearly two hours each way to check this out. It was worth it, and we'll be back friends. This may well be my favorite restaurant in Michigan. read more

This is such a classic restaurant. We always enjoy sitting in the pub because it's a bit more quaint. Either way, the menu is great, staff is friendly and food is good. You can't miss the Schulers cheese, which is so much better than what you buy at the store. It's a must stop restaurant full of history in you're in the beautiful town of Marshall MI!! read more

This restaurant lives up to both our memories of other family/friend outings and it lives up to its well established reputation in the Midwest! We stopped for a light dinner of soups & salad while enroute to Lake City. Restaurant was quiet, server (Janice) was attentive & helpful. She knew the answers to our questions and kept our water & tea glasses filled. My DH enjoyed the dinner salad with French dressing ( he couldn't finish it all...portion size ver large) & the seafood chowder! He finished all of that! Excellent! I had the Caesar salad - again too large to finish and their French onion soup! Also more than I could eat! Restrooms were clean & well maintained ... they looked recently renovated. Truly an institution, in a good way! Fantastic food, friendly service and I love the history and atmosphere. The bar is the best place to dine, but we've also had events in the private rooms and it's great for special events. I come back for the bar cheese alone, but there's even a patio where I can bring my dog in nice weather. The best! read more

Schuler's is a Marshall institution and the source of a large takeout order for a socially distanced picnic with my family. I was so impressed with the whole experience. I called the day before I needed the order and Elizabeth was super helpful in going over everything with me. I ordered 13 meals, all with different options. When I didn't know the answer for some of the options (what temp my nephew wanted his burger done was beyond me), Elizabeth kindly told me I could always call back and update the order if needed. When she asked me what time I wanted to pick it up, I said I didn't know if they'd be able to get it ready for an 11:30 pickup time since that's when they open. However, she told me that was even better since that way the kitchen could get it out before their lunch rush. Perfect, since my family was planning to meet at 11:30. She went over the entire order with me afterwards and double checked that she had everything right. Pickup went smoothly and everything was packaged perfectly. All the meals were clearly labeled, which was super helpful with such a big order. The proteins for the salads were packed separately which was a nice touch. Everyone was very happy with their meals! I had the "really good chicken tenders" and guess what - they live up to their name! It was a large portion of good quality chicken tenders plus a heap of their delicious fries. Everything was hot, no items were missing, and it was a really enjoyable meal. I would definitely stop in again next time I'm in the area, or just order takeout! read more

Overpriced!!!!! My wife and I took my Mom and granddaughter to eat here. We had previously lived in Marshall for 5 years and always found Schueler's to be a great experience. Well - that is no longer the case. The food was way overpriced. The menu has changed a bit and many of the favorites are gone. Looking at prices my wife and I split a spring vegetable gnocchi. the gnocchi was covered in pesto, and the 'Spring Vegatables" consisted of peas and some cut up cherry tomatoes. We split a salad which was fine but the total meal was $34 and that was one of the normal priced meals on the menu. After experiencing the food quality I believe that the Schueler's owners need to know how much they have hurt their business. It was a community and even a state staple. If you do a great job on food, service, and atmosphere people will continue to come. The food was bad, the atmosphere and seating was ok, and the service was normal. I know I will not be heading back to Schueler's and would recommend residents and visitors to Marshall go to one of the other great places in town that still concern themselves with the customer. read more

Enjoyed the ambiance and our server, Dawn, was very good. We had the salmon and galumpki as well as the Brussel sprouts (excellent!) and shrimp. The creamy tomato soup was excellent as well. Let's start with service. Tyler seated me and didn't just walk but told me his name and that he is available if needed. Never had a host do that before. Burdette was my server and made some great recommendations. Ver personable and I was amazed at the way he memorized the order at a table of 8 next to me; especially when they were making substitutions during and after ordering. Let's talk food!! I ordered the -cheese plate and while the cheese did not disappoint, the chips had an odd flavor. Almost like burnt garlic. - the Onion Soup and oh my- the best I've ever had!!!! - the Prime Rib was fantastic and the horseradish sauce was excellent. - cheesecake yummmm! The restaurant ambiance is charming and warm. It felt like I stepped back in time- in a good way. My only regret is that I don't live closer to make this a regular place. I was greeted promptly and offered the pub area or the dining room. I opted for the main dining room. My server Mitzi was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I enjoyed a great local Riesling and the best French onion soup I've ever had. The burger I ordered was Instagram worthy and tasted even better. I opted for the asparagus instead of fries. The name, the history and the decor scream German, but not one German food item on the menu. Shame on you! You have nitch market, and a facily that embodies that. I have been wanting to go here forever. Every time I want to, something comes up and I forget. Took the whole family for lunch. I had the Prime Rib, it was pretty good. But, this is the only place I had it, where they did not give Au Jus Sauce. I asked for broccoli and got beans. No one bothered to tell me they don't have broccoli. The salad I got was wilted. I think it's premade and sits in a fridge open in a bowl until someone orders it. Blech! But, the Thousand Island Dressing is freaking awesome!!! My wife got the Codfish plate, pretty good. But, my older daughter always get Chicken Nuggets, lol. But, they were delicious. And our 2 year old ate for free and got a free dessert. She loved her pizza and French fries.
