Dropped by to enjoy some ice cream. Although their sign shows current hours (6pm close Tuesday's ), they were closed at 5:20p.

Went in here thinking it was magical and got a cone that was actually stale and hard as a rock. Couldn't even bite into it. Oh well.

Since Astoria, the oldest city in Oregon, had a large settlement of Norwegian, Swedish and Finns the influence remains and a visit to Finn Ware really transports you. The vibrant Marimekko floral shopping totes with coordinating face masks had me at hello! Such a sign of the times. They have an assortment of striped shirts in a multitude of colors that just shout Nordic. Large selection of uniquely designed dish towers and dish cloths, I wanted them all! Of course there is a Christmas section with the most charming Santa's and gnomes in traditional red and white. Even a Christmas tree draped in ornaments for sale. Lots of items with colorful fish designed items: mugs, bowls, paper napkins, dish towels, cards. Make sure to check out the various Lutefisk mugs and their funny sayings. Along one of the walls is an assortment of Finnish licorice, Nordic treats, Icelandic chocolate and saltlakrits. We picked up several items for ourselves and Nordic friends. Definitely give yourself time to walk around and check out every nook and corner, there are treasures everywhere! Wish there was a store like this in Portland.

No! This place was…read morereally disappointing. Came here based on reviews, but I. would caution anyone to steer clear of this place. It started with flat champagne drinks. That's just a fail, and it suggests a place that doesn't bother keeping things fresh. It kind of went downhill from there. We were looking for nice fresh fish and chips, wile we were out along the coast. We live near the coast ourselves, and are no strangers to good seafood. We decided to do the Cod and the Halibut fish and chips. While the halibut seemed fresh, the cod was waxy and looked old, and frankly i found it somehow mildly nauseating. I couldn't bring myself to teat it. The batter was crsipy, but lacked seasoning and tasted really flat (cardboard?). Aside from that, the coleslaw seemed pretty old soggy. Gross. Not impressed at all - some of the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Some people may like this kind of food - but i will actively avoid this place the next time in Astoria. Hard pass. i'm nauseous just thinking back to my experience here. Could hardly get away fast enough...

The halibut was soft and wet rather than dry and meaty. The crab louie salad was underwhelming in both size and flavor. We spent over $60 and didn't feel like we got much. So what is the name of this place?

It reminded me of two Italian spots in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Very popular since most of the onsite seating were occupied (6/20/25). No surprise after glancing at their menu, easily I could gravitate towards several of their sandwiches. Lots of merch and deli items are also available to select from. I ended up ordering a half pound of proscuitto (0.52 lb for $17.67). This was carefully sliced thin, packaged, and wrapped carefully, which was duly noted and greatly appreciated. We paused at window counter seats and had to sample the purchase before departing. Absolutely delicious! Helped elevate a meal the next day too. I may have to return to indulge in one of their Italian sandwiches. Update: we did return to dine onsite at the same window counter seats (6/22/25). The Homie had the Hot Meatball ($14). Meaty with zesty sauce. I had the Salami Panini ($12), which reminded me of a fave Italian panini at Irwin's Bakery & Cafe in Seattle. Both were fantastic, hit the spot, clean plate club worthy, and definitely no takeout boxes needed! Gaetano's Market & Deli, a terrific find in Astoria!

It was a good decision. Note for fellow travelers: their menu is small. They are a smokehouse that oh by the way has a small dining area as well, which they call the Chowder House. Small can be beautiful. Specialization has its benefits. We ordered the chowder and smoked salmon on rye. First, the chowder. It's the real deal, slightly thinner than some, but not too thin, and boy howdy delicious. Seriously, its some of the best. I would say it's up there with Gracie's Sea Hag in Depoe Bay. It does not skimp on the clams, and is chunky throughout. The smoked salmon on rye exchanges a bagel for rye toast, but keeps the rest of the traditional deli staple intact. There is cream cheese, capers, red onion, and, of course, the salmon. (I don't know where smoked raw salmon ends and nova lox begins. They seem to be the same.) This is where we begin to understand those benefits of specialization. It was simply the best I've had. It was well smoked and tasted fabulous with the rye. If you have passed this place by for years as well, stop it, and stop by. It's good stuff. They also ship their smoked salmon.
