My mom had signed up for Science Care back in 2011. She was in good health at the time and a sound mind. She wanted to make sure there was no burden on her children. My mom was divorced and even with that my father had proceeded her in death, along with my sister. So it was just me In 2018 my mom was diagnosed with dementia. She ended up living with my husband and I at that point. She lived well up until this last year when she was in her final stages of dementia. Even with this she would remind me of her wishes. My mom was in memory care her last few months. Then last month she started really going downhill. Refusing met medications and eating. The doctor recommended hospice as she dropped a lot of weight very quickly. We had expected at least a month before she would start the death process. It was actually only a few days. When she passed we called science care and they were there within an hour after she passed. The gentleman was very caring and explained it all to me. Within two days her death certificate was available for me to pick up. Once she arrived in their Long Beach location from MaderA, CA they contacted me to let me know that it would be 4 to 6 weeks once they assessed her and determined where her donation would be best for their research. About 3 weeks later we were called and mom's cremains were ready to be sent back to the family. We received her cremains 4 weeks after her passing in a simple black box with a ribbon around it. We never had to provide any money for this process. What a huge relief for our family. We are having a memorial at the school she dedicated her career to for 32 years. A tree and a bench is being dedicated in her honor. After which my self and her grandchildren and great grandchildren will spread her ashes into the Ocean outside of Catalina Island as per her wishes. Legally done of course. To be honest. I was very frustrated with Science Care...My roommate ended up going into hospice. His living will(LW) stated he wanted to do body donation and I was his power of attorney(POA) Great, I called around and found Science Care. He was unable to speak so I went thru the qualification process and was told he was a perfect fit. Send over the documents(POA,LW)and we will get the intake started. Now my roommate was 80 years old with a 1/2 sister that lives 3000 miles away and NO other family. We had been in constant contact when he went into hospice. I promptly sent over the requested documents and thought nothing of it. I then spoke to the hospice facility and was told to follow up as Science Care had dropped the ball a few times with their facility over the years. So I call Science Care to confirm receipt of the documents and am basically told we don't have them send again. So I do send them again and call to follow up, and again still no receipt of documents. My roommate then passes and I call Science care to start the donation and am basically told pound sand you don't have any authority he's dead your documents don't work any more and we don't have them anyways...Let's just say I wasn't happy but I basically kept my cool. Got the 1/2 sister on the phone and she transferred authority over to me. Great, right...wrong. Upon death you need 2 witnesses to certify the death certificate info and Science Care needed their contact info. Can you guess, 3 more emails and finally they found the information. Also, for the death certificate you need very specific info and it would have been nice if Science Care had prepped on those very particular items as a roommate I wouldn't know that info typically. They did tell me that I needed to complete the certificate on the previous calls. Finally about 6 hours after his passing he was on his way to the donation facility. Now the next day I was assigned a post death coordinator and everything after that proceeded exactly as Science Care described. So to sum it up. Prior to passing make sure they have the documents and then check again and maybe again...The folks on the phone were polite, caring and seemed to want to help. I cannot recommend Science Care to other people based on my experience with them. My beloved sister decided to donate her body for pancreatic research purposes. The process after her death was overwhelming and heart breaking to me. It was not until the case was escalated and a manager of Science Care got involved that I felt my sister was being treated with dignity and respect. It is hard enough losing a loved one. Adding the stress of Science Care to it was an emotional toil. I hope if your loved one wants to donate their body to find a better business that remembers they re dealing with beloved people and not just a way to make money. read more

Well, from our experience and reading the reviews here, it looks like it goes one of 2 ways. If they want the body, they do good, if they don't you are SOL. My Mom fell into the second category. She was so happy with herself to have figured out how to leave her body to science and also how to cover her own final arrangements (she was fiercely independent). She recently passed from Covid 19, and thanks to Science Care, neither of those things happened. They declined to accept the body (apparently nobody is doing research on Covid 19 these days), and since she thought final arrangements were made, her family was left holding the bag. Trying to make those kinds of arrangements last minute, finding a way to pay for it. I couldn't imagine my Mom's disappointment in Science Care, that she thought so highly of, would deny her being donated to science, and would leave someone else the burden of the final arrangements. Science Care makes a pretty serious income from providing this service, which I have no problem with. They should include in their business model at least a basic cremation for the bodies the decline to pickup, that have been registered with them for many years. read more

I'd give less than 1 star if I could. I am the son-in-law of a great man and Navy Veteran, his name is Ken and he is 72 dying of stage 4 lung cancer. We go through the VA and Hospice of the Valley for his care, although I take care of him 24/7. My family is financially strapped because I can't work, yet my wife does. We have been turned down by EVERY branch of the government for help. When Ken's health deteriorated rapidly I became worried about where his final resting place would be, and how it would all work once he passed. The social worker for Hospice recommended Science Care. I went to their website and they have a guarantee for Hospice patients, when I read this I was just over joyed. So after mustering up the nerve to call, I finally did. The gentleman on the phone went through a TON of questions about Ken's health with me and it took a while. I was then put on hold for another long while as the medical team evaluated Ken. When he came back on, he let me know that they were turning Ken down. WHAT?!? What the heck happened to guaranteed acceptance for Hospice Patients??? He then starts in with asking for Ken's info so he can have a tree planted in his name though. LMAO, Right!!! I was totally distraught at this point and called the social worker to let her know how upset this has made me, and that I will NOT be calling anyone else about this. I am TIRED of being turned down for help, I won't ask again. If she can't get someone to help us I guess his body can stay in the room. After hearing this the social worker then tells me to calm down and get some rest, that she will make sure he is taken care of and we won't have to worry any longer. To which I replied that there will be no rest. If Ken dies tonight we there is nothing we can do. BTW, the gentleman on the phone for Science Care was NOT caring, more without emotion. EDITED FOR UPDATE - I just found out through the Social Worker at Hospice that they had refused Ken at Science Care because of his weight(so nice of them to tell me, maybe next time add those facts to the guarantee for Hospice section?). He is too thin and doesn't have enough material for them to study on. read more

Both of my parents donated their bodies to Science Care, 8 years apart. Given the circumstances, it could not have been a better experience. They pre-registered years in advance and when they were in hospice care, I called to answer the relevant health questions. We received cremated remains within 10 days of each passing. The individuals that we dealt with were always compassionate and caring. It was comforting to know that their donations might continue to help others. My husband and I both signed up with Science Care for full body donation several years ago. He died recently, and Science Care was wonderful. When he began in-home hospice care last month, we sat with his hospice nurse (Joan) and told her about the donation plan. Joan had his medical records file too, of course, so when he died she was the one who called Science Care and answered their initial questions. After the call, Science Care came to the house for the body fairly quickly. Then later the same day they called to follow up with me, and we also discussed the time frame to expect and how to get answers to any questions that might arise. It was a very sad time for me and my family, and Science Care couldn't have been more caring and compassionate. We feel proud to have contributed to their research & education program. read more

My dad signed up with Science Care years before his death and gave a brochure to me for when that time eventually came. It did, in February of 2013. He was in his 4th night at home (home hospice) when I called (at roughly 1 am because I couldn't sleep) because we were down to hours and I wasn't sure what to expect. They were very kind and patient (I was emotional and teary). After answering extensive questions about his heath (to the best of my ability), they told me he was acceptable and to call them when he passed. The next morning he did and I called them. They came to my mom's house in about an hour and helped us fill out the paperwork for the death certificate. They made sure we had taken the time "to say goodbye" before they asked if it was alright to remove him. They were quiet, kind and compassionate the entire time. My dad had decided on a scientific "long term" donation, meaning we would not be getting his ashes back. They asked if that was what WE wanted - making sure we understood "no ashes". At the time we wanted to honor his wishes, but afterward we did regret not going with a general donation so we could get ashes for a ceremony. All in all, very dignified and they did plant a tree and send us an acknowledgement of it. Just remember: just because you sign up doesn't guarantee you will be accepted, but you can call them before signing up and ask those questions at that time so there are no surprises when you have the least capacity to deal with them. read more

My dad was enrolled in their program. After he got cancer and passed away one call to them and everything was taken care of. They had all the paperwork processed and the body was collected by a funeral home in just a few hours. His ashes were returned in less than 2 weeks for a $15.00 fee. Science care has been amazing. When my father got sick one of the last things I wanted to do was start researching what to do "just in case" but the website was easy to understand, and what I didn't understand I could call for. They won't pick up when you call, but you're almost guaranteed a call back within 10 minutes. Once he passed the call to have him picked up up was again simple. We had to have all members of the immediate family sign a form online to allow them to recieve his body which was a little bit messy, but really only trying to remember his medical history was difficult. Once they had processed his remains I received a call they would be shipped out that day and I would get them within a week. They came the next day. This was a terribly sad part of our lives, and science care has made it as easy as they could. Even after receiving his remains when I had another question, they were still there to help.
