I had a very disappointing experience with Tempe Mortuary during an already incredibly difficult time for our family. We have actually used this mortuary in the past and had a much better experience when working with a different funeral director. Unfortunately, this time was completely different, and the experience we had with Monica was extremely upsetting. Monica lacked empathy and did not take the time to guide us through the process or explain our options. We specifically requested a viewing for my mother-in-law, and later were told she was not viewable. This was devastating, especially because we were then told it was due to us not requesting embalming, something that was never clearly explained to us. As a grieving family, we didn't even know what questions we were supposed to ask, and we relied on the funeral director to walk us through those decisions. Communication was also very difficult. Monica was rude on the phone and did not show understanding or compassion. When we expressed concerns or asked about alternative options, nothing was offered and there was no apology. When we ultimately decided to switch to another mortuary, the only response we received was that we would still have to pay. The lack of care, guidance, and empathy added unnecessary stress and sadness to an already painful time. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Tempe Mortuary to families looking for compassionate and supportive care. read more

I know it's weird to review a mortuary, but when I was looking for a place when my mom died I found it hard to figure out where to go. I ended up using these guys and they handled things well. They're systems are a bit old school (no new technology here), but that didn't impact their ability to properly handle things. read more

My family liked the idea of working with a locally owned business for my Mother's funeral. While Mom was in hospice (Hospice of the Valley is awesome), we did a little pre-planning which was helpful. Doug and the entire staff at Tempe Mortuary were very helpful and patient. Every detail was taken care of and wishes honored. The visitation and rosary was nice and Mom looked great. They took care of organizing the flowers, pictures and we also did a slide show. We often had questions and they were always helpful in answer any and all questions. The day of the funeral went just as expected, there was great coordination with the church and the cemetary. Tempe Mortuary made a tough time much easier. read more

No one thinks about Mortuaries until you need one. I am so grateful my Dad's church pointed us to Tempe Mortuary. Doug compassionately and patiently walked us through all the decisions that had to be made while honoring my Mom's wishes. He helped us get the best prices on very short notice. We began to think of Doug as family. He and the rest of the staff went over and above and quite honestly we couldn't have made it through this difficult time without their wise and kind counsel. Everything was handled such that we didn't have to worry about these details and could focus on getting through the rough days ahead. Where to start? First of all, this place is in desperate need of an update; it feels like you're walking into a dingy 1970's movie set. We made arrangements a few months ago for my father's services with a man named Doug, who was wearing red cowboy boots and chewing tobacco!!!! Gross and unprofessional! The arrangement took hours and felt like it would never end; he would not stop telling stories about the various bits of information he was gathering about my father. C'mon, we're here to plan a funeral, not hear for 20 minutes all about what you think about why the county needs my father's education level! Needless to say, this was a painful, drawn-out experience that, coupled with the dingy, dated building, left a horrible first impression and left us exhausted. The cremation took place in a timely manner, although we kept needing to be contacted for additional info, like SSN and a few other things I could've sworn we told Doug at the 2.5 hour long arrangement, but I guess it's hard to remember to write these things down when you can't stop talking and interrupting my sister and I. The chapel service went fairly well too, though the chapel suffers from the same outdated styling as the rest of the building. We had ordered memorial folders for the service, and were very disappointed for the price we paid. $60 for what amounts to 100 pieces of printer paper with misspellings and the wrong date. We weren't shown any of this until we arrived for the service and the folders needed to be reprinted while the rest of our family was arriving. Really!? How do you charge $60 for this? Now, the cherry on top of this terrible experience: I walk in to pick up my dad's ashes and get to watch whoever the rude older woman with a perm is run out of her office, ask the girl at the front desk if I've paid yet, not talking to or looking at me, mind you, and rifle through our paperwork to find proof we paid even through me telling her repeatedly we've paid in full before the services even took place. You'd have thought no one was standing there in front of her; she completely ignored me and then rushed away once she saw our receipt in the paperwork. Only after this woman verified my payment did I receive my dad's ashes and was able to walk away from this place for good. How embarrassing! Do yourself and your family a favor: take your business elsewhere. There are much cheaper funeral homes that will give you much better care. read more

We came here knowing it isn't the cheapest place around, and we explained we didn't have a lot of money to work with due to the sudden and unexpected nature of my mother's passing. We didn't ask for a discount on anything and we had already shopped around at some other, cheaper places. We were assured by a man named Doug that although Tempe Mortuary isn't the cheapest place around, they'd work with us and we'd get the better service than the cheaper places. When it came time for casket selection, we informed Doug we had already purchased from Costco as we needed to save as much money as possible on the more expensive aspects of the funeral. From then on, we were treated like we were idiots for not having known he would discount their caskets to match Costco... we were all left wondering why the prices wouldn't be lower to begin with if they could discount them so much if we raised an eyebrow at the price. After this casket ordeal, Doug remained very short with us and rude; it was as though we had personally slighted him or something. Then comes the day of our service and Doug is nowhere to be seen for 99% of the time. Instead, our service was attended by two other gentlemen we hadn't met prior. They were nice enough, but it really seemed like Doug hadn't passed along any of the specifics we had requested for our service (tables and easels setup, and our programs weren't ready when we arrived). Then, towards the end of the services, on my way to the restroom, there I see Doug leaning on the reception desk chatting up the secretary. I guess he's too busy with her to help with the service he set up with us. It seemed unprofessional and like something that wouldn't have happened at a smaller family owned place like this, especially after all the big talk about the amazing service we'd receive. I'd hope this isn't how he treats all the families with whom he meets and this is just because we personally insulted him by purchasing a casket elsewhere, but still spending multiple thousands of dollars at Tempe Mortuary. The icing on the cake was when we opened our funeral programs and found numerous mispellings and a wrong date. Good grief. read more
