My father passed away unexpectedly to me anyway. My uncle called me and due to family misunderstandings I was in charge of handling his arrangements. I live in Seattle so I'm doing all this over the phone and the coroner's office gave me a list that was not useful. Instead of seeking to understand how what he believes to be a misunderstanding occurred, he simply shared his perspective about our experience based on what he'd been told without our input. I could provide a detailed response to each of his points, but in the end, 3 things stand out as paramount to our experience: 1. Julia was presented to us as the manager with answers, but our biggest roadblock occurred in our communications with her. No pricing transparency, conflicting messages about process and a used-car-lot sales feeling. 2. We had very simple stated needs that somehow could not be accommodated in a timely fashion for whatever reason. 3. Once our loved one was in the care of Abel Funeral Services, our entire exchange was completed in 1 day, with empathy, details and easy next steps. Per Spencer's note, we agree that we are all human, and many things can indeed impact an exchange during a time of grief. That said, our experience was not ideal on a number of fronts which is what I sought to share in my review. I am sure others have had good experiences with BFS&C, we simply did not. When my sister passed, we were given a list of funeral homes. My niece and I only wanted the "best," and were delighted to find "Best Funeral Services" on the list. The Phoenix location was close by. We called late at night for pickup; the gentleman who came out treated us and my sister with all due compassion and respect. Our Mom passed away recently and the hospice agency picked up this place for us. The service was within expectations and the matters were handled appropriately and respectfully. Two things...after all the proper choices were add and services paid, we were allowed to see our Mom one last time. The body presentation was very poor and we were not prepared to see what we saw, no need to go into details. I think the sales person should have prepared us regarding the optics we were about to face. It was going to be the last picture of her in our minds. This poor presentation left me with a bitter taste to say the least, families need to be prepared. The other thing I wish to mention is that the box where the cremation was placed, not the urn, but the carton box had someone else last name written and crossed out. Their packages were simple and very straightforward. No hidden fees like the other funeral home. Julia was very empathetic, professional and sweet during the entire planning process. I highly recommend her, she is like a friend a friend to me now. Their prices were also about 40% cheaper than the big funeral chains. My Son passed away suddenly and because of the circumstances, his body ended up in the Medical Examiner's. When the Med. EX. office informed me that he was ready to be released I contacted Best (?) Funeral Services via their website. I filled the form and paid with CC. Got back a "thank you" and "we will contact you" Days go by and nothing happens. I get a call from the Med. Ex. that the funeral Home has not contacted them in timely fashion and that they will move the body to a funeral home of their choosing. I contacted "Last Funeral Services" and they said they had no record of any kind. I drive up to their place and show them a copy of the transaction and the tank you note. After 30 minutes or so, someone comes to the lobby and says "our mistake, we found it but we need for you to write and sign new paper work. If I was buying tires for my car this may be somewhat acceptable but not in a case like this. read more

For those who've never been asked to handle such an important matter as finding a cremator service (family member didn't want a funeral), there is quite a bit of pressure to do this right. Thankfully, there were other reviews on this site which prompted me to call Best and two others. While price was a factor (you pay by check, not credit card), it was really the quality of the phone conversations and then meeting Carol in person that makes me feel good about making Best my recommendation. They did not let us down! From the paperwork - and there is plenty - to the sense of how cremation works (all their own facility with tracking to ensure you receive your loved ones remains) to bringing our own urn that they filled while we waited (we scheduled a time), it was well done. I was set up with this place due to my father's passing. I was very impressed with the professionalism and care that they provided to him and to me. I was able to view him after I had set up all of the services necessary for him and they also took care of the details. The pros: 1. Extremely caring and professional staff. Worked with me step-by-step to ensure that all of the expectations I had were met. They took care of sending his remains to where he wants his service. 2. Pretty easy to find, lots of parking, and very spacious. They even have a memorial wall for those that may not have specific requests for a burial spot. 3. Very affordable and provided all of the options. I went with cremation as it was what my father requested. 4. Will help you with all of the legal steps, specifically the certificate of death. They are also very detailed to ensure it answers most questions asked by insurance providers, Medicate, Social Security, and any others. The cons: None for this place, just for the state of Arizona and their draconian steps. Too many legal issues, especially when a living will or power attorney are established. If it seems shady, then you can figure it out. If the documentation is present, there really aren't any questions. read more

What an incredible place. This past week my father in law passed away and the entire staff handled the situation beautifully. They were honest, sympathetic, and nobody tried to upsell or take advantage of us during this tragedy. The woman who handled our arrangements (I feel horrible that I never took down her name), was incredible. She even had the right kind of humor to keep things from getting too heavy...but was quick to pull out tissues when emotion became overwhelming. In fact, after my mother's cremation, Best even called me with an idea on how to save money and I could receive a slight reimbursement - now that is OUTSTANDING customer service. Additionally, I had a few small requests that I specifically wanted for my Mother.....Allison (at Best) was truly diligent in ensuring that those requests were made - which may seemed minor to the average person but meant the world to me for my Mother. Note - we didn't have an actual funeral at Best because we had it at my Mother's church. Best handled all of the arrangements from picking my Mother up from the medical examiner (coroner) to her cremation and then shipping her ashes. This is the worst Funeral Home you could use. I lost my daughter Heather Click in May of 2021 and I had arranged a private good-bye service for 5 minutes and was told we only had 5 minutes and only 3 people. After we said good-bye and I was sitting in the lobby waiting to finish the paperwork, my ex-husband walked in and got a good-bye service. I don't mind that but Kevin that works there arranged it at my same time. I had not seen him in 25 years and this was inappropriate. If it was OK why didn't anyone from there call me and tell me he was going to be there. Then Kevin told my ex how to go to court and get the rights for Heather taken away from me. Heather's dad wasn't even around for over 20 years, then he wanted Heather's decisions to be made by him and I was the client that signed up Heather with them. They are back stabbers and can't be trusted. The place also looks like a dump(like an old warehouse). read more

I am writing this review because I think the owner (Spencer I believe) should know how the manager Julia is treating her clients. We had to do my fathers service & burial on 2 separate days. When we came in for the burial portion I brought some items to put into my dad's casket. I asked her if I could go to him & put the items there in which she told me no because there were other bodies in the back besides my dad's- completely understandable. Since I was so emotional, my dad was taken from us very abruptly, I was begging her to let me put the items in there myself as it was my final goodbye to him. There were several people standing close by that can attest for what happened next; after asking her if there was anything she could do such as put his casket in a separate room away from the other bodies so I could place the items, she finally responded with "you had your chance yesterday at the service, you already had your funeral". I was completely shocked that someone who works around grieving people would speak to a client this way. I understand that there are certain policies in place that she needed to follow but to speak to me like this on the day of my father's funeral is completely inappropriate and unprofessional. She made my already crappy day even worse & That is something I will never forget. My family & I will never come back to this facility as long as Julia is working there. read more

I have used Yelp for discovering great restaurants, coffee shops, bars, parks and now funeral homes. Of course no one ever wants to have to look for a funeral home. But, I am beyond grateful for Yelp that led me to Best Funeral Services. My mother had passed too young at the age of 56 and it left my father and myself obviously shell shocked. We had absolutely zero experience in funeral planning and were emotionally wrecked, but now we were left with the unexpected and extremely difficult task of planning my mother's funeral. I had loaded up Yelp on my phone and typed up funeral homes in Phoenix and the first name that popped up happened to be the most highly reviewed and recommended: Best Funeral Services. The photos that people posted definitely helped with our decision... (PHOTOS REALLY HELP EVERYONE!) My Dad made the phone call to Best and talked to Spencer who is the head Director there. Spencer was extremely kind over the phone and answered all of our questions in a calm manner no matter how obvious some of them may have been (again our first time funeral planning). We thanked Spencer and informed him that we were very interested with having the services there, but we did want to do a little bit of shopping before we made our final decision. After we checked out some other funeral homes that left us very underwhelmed and featured employees that came off more like used cars salesmen, rather than compassionate professionals, we checked out Best Funeral Services in person and were instantly very impressed. The chapel is beautiful for funeral services,with plenty of seating inside and in the hallways for those who need to step out, plenty of parking, nice restrooms, water fountain etc. We met with Allison who assisted us through the entire process. Allison is AMAZING. A great, genuine person who was sympathetic to our grief, but could also laugh and joke with us when it was appropriate to do so. She worked extremely hard to make sure we had the exact service that we wanted. Never did it feel like she was trying to make the upsale, in fact on numerous occasions, she gave us many options to save money. Funerals can be very expensive, but through all of our homework, Best Funeral Services was close to the cheapest but, yet could provide the highest in quality. Allison recommended David Greene to proceed over the service as we wanted a service that wasn't so much religious , but more of a celebration of life, Allison recommended David Greene for this very purpose. This man came over to our house days before the service, sat with us for over an hour, cried and laughed with us and gave us an amazing amount of support and encouragement. A truly remarkable man. The service was perfect. I cannot say enough great things about Best Funeral Services. Moreover, their employees should remember in general that they are dealing with people in grief and adjust their customer service and tone accordingly. While no one has been outright rude, they've gone from being incredibly sensitive and kind to borderline impatient and dismissive. I've sadly had to bring three deceased relatives to them since 2014, and it's gone downhill in terms of customer service each time. My wife passed on March 10th at 1pm in the morning. She was under hospice care and they recommended Best. When the hospice nurse was called in upon her passing, she verified Stephanie's death, then called Best on Dunlap to pick her up. The guy who came was respectful and kind. My wife was down to 85 pounds and I did not want any kind of viewing service. I wanted a basic cremation and would have a celebration of life in my church. I met withe director and she did not pressure me in to anything. I told her that I was not working because I had left work a year ago to care for Stephanie. She suggested I could get the death certificates my self and save their fee. Though it was the start of the Covid Virus my wife was creamated within a few days and they called me to pickup the ashes. They even verified with my wife's life insurance policy over the phone so I could receive the check. I thought for the price of around 800 dollars I received a lot more in services. I was impressed with their professional demeanor. I can't speak on there funeral services but they did a great job on my wife's cremation during a crazy time. read more

Three weeks ago from my home in Oregon, I screened 6 funeral homes on behalf of my mother because my father was terminally ill. I wanted to have arrangements made in advance. I made appts with 3 of them for the following weekend when I had planned to visit my father. What I knew at that time was that Best appeared to be the most affordable and that the people at Best had been exceptionally kind and informative when I called. After my call with them, Best immediately sent me a packet of information and link to begin a file on my father should I need it. When 6 hours later I received a call that my father had suddenly passed away, I remembered the kind voice on the phone and the packet in my email and told my mother it would be okay, that Best would take care of Dad. 1 hour later my father was in their care. When I arrived in Phoenix the next day, Roxy assisted us in making arrangements. She was kind, efficient and we could not have asked for better care. I appreciated that throughout our time at Best we only had to deal with Roxy, she met us for arrangement, viewing, cremation and when I arrived to pick up my father and take him home. I have given myself time (almost a year) to think about the experience we had with Best Funeral Home Central/Dunlap location before I decided to write a review. We had previously used the Peoria location for two other family members, unfortunately due to the location my Mother was when she passed away, the Central/Dunlap location was the closet to pick her up. My Mother selected Best Funeral home for her cremation as we were pleased with the services that we received previously at the Peoria location for my Brother and Father. My Mother had been in hospice care, when she passed away and the hospice nurse contacted Best to make the arrangements to have her picked up. After receiving NO notification from Best that they had picked my Mother up, I contacted them to inquire, I spoke with a receptionist who seemed very inexperienced and unsympathetic, I was told she would be picked up later and I asked if the family would be able to come to the Central/Dunlap location to set up the cremation arrangements and was told they were short staffed and we wouldn't be able to schedule an appointment until two days later with the Funeral Director. When we arrived for our scheduled appointment, the receptionist was the first person we met with to start the initial documents, she stated that she had never done this before, and it was very obvious. We then meet with another staff member and were told the Funeral Director that we had a scheduled appointment with and (had to wait two days) was not available. The lack of sympathy that these two staff members exhibited was very unsettling to my Sister and I. Once the arrangements were finalized and we were told the time frame before the cremation and death certificate would be completed. After a number of days had passed the death certificate still had not been filed with the county, and my Mother's body was still awaiting to be cremated. My Sister contact Ms. Ramirez to inquire on the status and she stated they were still waiting for my Mother to be cremated because they were so busy and she stated they had submitted to the county the death certificate (which was done after the fact). Each time I arrived at Best Funeral Central/Dunlap, the lobby smelled of food, the staff was always eating. The death of a loved one is not any easy situation to deal with and to spend your money and receive unprofessional and unsympathetic services is not exceptable. read more

Its been over 3 months since I used Best Funeral Services & Chapel for my son. I dont really dislike this place but there were 2 things that I found to be terrible. I was from out of town and had no idea where to go to have my son cremated. He was a victim of a homicide I went in with my husband sister-in-law and brother-in-law. I guess things were going as they were suppose to. As I was asked to sign here and initial there I got a little over whelmed. And trying to hold back from just having a total melt down I was told by the person that was working with us. "I know its alot but its not as bad as buying a house" The 4 of us just all looked at each other. When we left the 1st thing we said to one another is "Did she really say that" I couldn't believe that came out of someone mouth. Ok whatever. Whats done is done. A few days later I received a call letting my know my son was ready to be picked up. I was told when and where. I showed up where I was told to and waited my turn to go to the window. I stated why I was there. Gave my son's name. A couple minutes later the lady came back and asked me "are you sure this is where you were suppose to come" I told her yes I was sure. She let me know he wasn't there. Of course my heart sank. She told me "Honey dont fret and have a seat" Seriously?? You misplace my son and you tell me not to fret. You guys really need to think about some of the crap you say. I feel both comments were uncalled for. Thankfully I know I will never have to go back there. read more

The very same day that our flight arrived in Phoenix, I met with Julia at Best. She was phenomenal. Her sincere compassion and professionalism were instrumental in achieving my peace of mind. Her knowledge of the process and what to expect next was remarkable. I had to make extremely difficult decisions because my dad and I never had the opportunity to discuss his wishes. Julia was patient as I hemmed and hawed. She even excused herself from the room when the police investigators called to go over some information. I recently came in from out of state to plan my brothers funeral and the Director Julia was the most compassionate person that I spoke to in regards to an affordable service. I asked for information and was given the total price with taxes and fees.No kidding! She didn't start at a base price and start adding fees for memorial cards, viewing rooms, refrigeration and transportation but gave me one solid price. They handled all of my wishes and request with grace and a smile. If only this was the standard for funeral services everywhere.
