Beware if you are considering Scissor Bird Alterations for an expensive or sentimental garment. I rarely leave negative reviews, but after my experience, I feel obligated to share what happened. Like many customers, I felt reassured when I walked into the shop and saw numerous bridal gowns in the store AND I read the cusotmer reviews before I brought my dress. I believed my expensive designer gown would be in experienced hands. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I brought my gown to Scissor Bird Alterations to be taken in on the sides and hemmed for my son's wedding. The side alterations were acceptable, but the hemming was not. The first time I picked up my dress, I immediately noticed that the new hem was clearly visible all the way around the gown. Instead of preserving the original look of the dress, there was an obvious stitched line that changed its appearance. When I questioned it, Marta told me that this was how the original hem looked. I showed her photographs from the designer's website, which clearly showed that the original gown did not have a visible stitched hem. After seeing the photos, she agreed to keep the dress and rework the hem. I was so concerned that I returned the very next day because I no longer felt comfortable with the alterations. I was considering taking the dress elsewhere, but Marta reassured me that she could correct the issues, so I trusted her and left it with her a second time. When I picked up the dress again, the visible stitching had been improved, but the hem was now puckered and uneven in multiple places. Marta told me to take the gown to a professional dry cleaner to have it pressed, explaining that the pressing would allow the hem to lay flat. In all my years of having clothing altered, I have never picked up a garment from a tailor that was not ready to wear. I followed her recommendation and paid to have the gown professionally pressed and cleaned. Unfortunately, the professional pressing did not correct the puckering or uneven hem. I also had to pay to have the gown professionally cleaned because the hem had become noticeably dirty during the alteration process. My shoes, which I wore only during my fittings in the shop, were also dirty on the bottom. With my son's wedding only days away, I sought a second opinion from Pinpoint Alterations. They opened the hem to inspect the previous alteration work because the puckering could not be corrected by pressing alone. Watching another tailor carefully take apart an expensive designer gown in an attempt to salvage it just days before my son's wedding was heartbreaking. After I contacted Marta again, she offered to inspect the dress. I appreciate that she made the offer, but by that point another inspection was not what I needed. I had already given her the opportunity to correct the work, followed her recommendation to have the gown professionally pressed, and the results had not changed. What concerned me most was not simply that the alterations did not turn out well, but that the dress was presented to me as finished despite workmanship that I immediately questioned. The visible stitched hem was apparent the first time I picked it up, and after it was reworked, the puckering and uneven hem were also evident. As a customer, I expected an expensive designer gown to leave the shop in a wearable condition--not require professional pressing and cleaning before I could even consider wearing it. The photographs clearly show the condition of the hem, and despite knowing I was dissatisfied from the very first pickup, there was never an offer to refund the alteration charges or help cover the additional expenses I incurred trying to make the dress wearable, including professional pressing, professional cleaning, and a second alterations specialist. I understand that every seamstress may occasionally encounter a difficult fabric. I am actually angrier with myself for trusting her with my dress. This was one of the most important garments I have ever purchased because it was the dress I planned to wear for my son's wedding. Instead of feeling excited for such a special occasion, I spent the days leading up to it trying to save a dress that I had entrusted to a professional. This place was so rude to me. I brought my wedding dress to be taken in, they gave me an estimate that was almost 2x the place I ended up going (hundreds of dollars difference). I understand wedding dresses are a lot of work and layers, but it was excessive and I felt assumptions were made based on my scrubs and vehicle. They were really rude when my husband questioned the price, and immediately went to fear tactics like "no one else will do it", "watch who you have do this" (implying someone else in town would mess it up), and "fine come get the dress then". Amazing customer service! I took a pair of jeans here to be hemmed after another local tailor had twice failed to do what I asked with the jeans. I explained to Scissorbird what I wanted and they told me turn around time would be two weeks, but they'd try to get it done sooner. They called me later that same day and said they felt bad that I had such a hard time with the other tailor so they prioritized my order and finished it that very same day. I was really nervous to have my wedding dress altered (I have heard so many horror stories!) but Marta was so incredibly sweet to work with and is such a talented seamstress. I am so grateful for Scissor Bird! Marta is kind, direct, and reliable! I bought my wedding dress in Portland and was supposed to have it altered by another alterations company in Bend (not Scissor Bird). That other company assured me I could wait several months before coming in for a dress fitting (that they would be able to alter my dress with 5 weeks of my wedding date), but when I took it in to them they were so overwhelmed with the amount of work it needed they turned me away. I was desperate to find another alterations company to do a rush alteration service on a dress that needed a lot of work (e.g., lace had to be taken off and hand sewn back on). When I called Scissor Bird they not only prioritized my alteration service, but they didn't charge me a rush fee! When I went to try on the dress after the first alterations (I assumed there may be at least two to get it right), it was perfect!! I took my dress home within in a week of the whole fiasco, ready for my wedding in 4 weeks! read more

For Yeeps and other Peeps who are considering using Scissor Bird and reading reviews of same, I offer this bit of advice. Look behind the Yelp filter. You'll find several five star reviews there. Yelp has filtered them, I imagine, because they look like "plants". You know, only one or two reviews written by a Yeep and the Scissor Bird review being on that short list and being glowing. I'm often glad Yelp filters out those things that look suspicious for "plants". In fact there are a couple of restaurants in Bend that I hope they'll pay attention to for that going on right now. :-) BUT... I'd say from personal experience at Scissor Bird, that the five star filtered reviews are genuine for relaying the writers' five star experiences. AND... l pass along that a friend called recently saying her neighbor was in desperate need of a "proper tailor" and asked if I knew of anyone. I passed along the information about Scissor Bird. The feedback I got was that the recommendation was top notch and Marta did a beautiful job. I said, "Your neighbor should write a Yelp review so other people will know." She asked, "What's Yelp?" I told her. Who knows. One of the filtered reviews might even be my friend's neighbor. :-) SO...Just sayin'...I imagine the folks behind the filter were providing their honest opinion. if you're looking for more on Scissor Bird, you might want to read behind the filter. My wife and I were looking for a place to get her wedding dress slightly modified. Take in mind this is a budget friendly dress that we both loved as minimalists. M y wife took it to Scissorbird and told me their pricing. The seamstress was asking for $480 for slight modifications and told my wife her dress had more layers than it actually was (we found this out later). I called to ask about the pricing as I was away for work at the time. I was met with a rude individual over the phone who told me to have my wife come pick up the dress, I calmly explained that I have zero idea what pricing is usual and what is unusual in her field and that I was just not trying to be taken advantage of. After a couple of back and forth of me trying to ask about why it costed so much and her responding with "just come pick it up", I decided to call another place close by. They were much much nicer and did the job for a much more reasonable price. In this field I will happily pay more for good customer service and piece of mind. I had neither at this place, and it turns out the the dress had 5 layers not 7, and more modifications could be done for nearly half the price. I will not be returning and I will advise against coming here. read more

It's not the kind of jacket that would look "cooler" with a tear or patchwork but some kind of magic happened here and you can't tell there was ever a massive rip unless you look really really closely at my armpit. Marta is amazing. My wedding dress was off the rack and BEAUTIFUL, but had been sitting around for a few years and had some knicks and tears. She fixed the intricate lace back and left no trace of any alterations. The bustle was perfect, and easy to use. She's a firecracker of a woman, so if you can't deal with that you might get offended. I loved talking with her; she was so excited for me, and cared for my dress as if it were her own. Marta was great, or so we thought. We went to get a wedding dress altered. We just needed the sides taken in, a bustle and the front hemmed. She pinned it, it looked great, but then she said $680.00! What?! Out of nowhere, as we were discussing the price, her daughter (?) stormed in, snatched the dress and started taking the pins out. We continued to talk to Marta but the daughter was NASTY! We said we had not decided yet but she continued to take the pins out. Needless to say, we left. We found a new place. Same alterations= $250.00. They were much more personable and there was no daughter to be rude to us. This is similar to someone else's post, so we do recommend shopping around before deciding on this place for your alterations. read more

I want to start by saying I have no qualms about the quality of the work that was done which is why I didn't give them 1 star. I just want to warn anyone that chooses to give them their wedding dress, that if you suffer from any form of anxiety at all, maybe steer clear. They had the dress for 4 months and we didn't get the dress back until 4 days before the wedding. A lot of stress and many, many unreturned phone calls. Stress we didn't need on top of everything else. They didn't explain to us that they won't have you come in for a second fitting until the month before the wedding (for us, it was 3 weeks) so it doesn't matter how early you give it to them. This was our first time dealing with needing to alter a wedding dress so we didn't know what to expect, but I know we expected to have the dress back well before 4 days before the wedding! If you do take your dress here, make sure and communicate when you expect to have the dress done and don't just let them dictate that for you or you will be completely stressed out! read more

Oh my gosh! I am blown away by their quality of work. I took them in a skirt that had a lace inset and the lace had ripped away from the material. I had no idea how anyone would be able to fix it. Not only did the fix it...you can't tell anything was ever wrong. When I dropped it off they weren't sure they weren't going to have to alter the lace to fix it.
