Scotchwood Diner has been a long-time Scotch Plains landmark. It's been around for over 50 years and the decor hasn't changed much since it initially opened. Expect a very old-school and traditional NJ diner ambiance - it's very cool! That being said, I have never gone to the Scotchwood Diner for top-notch food. Some things on the menu are definitely better than others, but the quality is pretty inconsistent. However, I've never had a horrible experience that prevents me from returning for an inexpensive meal and a bit of nostalgia. During my last visit, I ordered the Greek wrap with a side of home fries. The Greek wrap was ok - it was a bit watery (probably extra moisture from the tomatoes), but I did like like the combination of flavors overall. The home fries were very basic with no added salt or seasoning (I did eat all of them but when it comes to any kind of potato, I'm really not picky). This was my first time ordering something other than pancakes and waffles here and I will say that I was pleasantly surprised. Though I probably wouldn't order it again. The Scotchwood Diner is a great place to stop by at least once if only to take-in the old-school atmosphere. If you're looking for a vintage diner experience, Scotchwood Diner just off of Route 22 in Scotch Plains is a match! My boyfriend and I went to the Scotchwood Diner on March 26th, at around 9:00 pm, so it was 2 hours to closing. The parking lot was huge and upon walking in, we were greeted with grandiose chrome accents, cozy booths, and even personal jukeboxes at the tables. There was no wait time as we were greeted with menus upon walking into the diner. There were a couple of other tables seated in the diner, but overall it was pretty empty, playing into an almost "exclusive" experience. The menu is massive! They've got everything from fluffy Oreo pancakes and Greek omelets to tuna melts and roast beef. I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar wrap with curly fries, and it was decent. The fries were crisp and the Caesar dressing was very lemony! My boyfriend got the buffalo chicken wrap, and said it was very good! Our server Laurisa (I hope that's how you spell her name) was super friendly and efficient. She made sure to be very attentive and personable. She was fast, accurate and funny! She overheard my boyfriend and I playfully arguing over who was going to pay the bill and she remarked "If that's him being mean to you, what is him being nice?" Overall, the experience was great. WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS TO THIS SHAMEFUL BUSINESS. I have never written a review before, but now I must. On Monday, during the floods, many people including children were stranded after being rescued from the water or having no way home. We gathered in this diner, just relieved to be somewhere safe. Even though they were closing, we stayed in the waiting area, we weren't even allowed to sit at tables, but no one complained. Then they decided to kick everyone out, people with small kids, people clearly scared for their lives, and they didn't care one bit. One rude lady (not sure if she was a waitress) continued to rolled her eyes, treated us as if we were bothering her, and made everyone feel unwelcome. How could any human being act this way toward people who were literally stranded and frightened? Would it really hurt to brew a pot of coffee and let people sit until it was safe to leave? It's not like the staff could really leave anyway, it was flooded all around and everyone was stranded!!!! As a business owner, you take on being part of the community, and in a moment like this, that means showing basic compassion. Instead, this place showed none. It's not just disappointing; it's shameful and embarrassing. I have seen posts on Facebook groups of other businesses that stepped up and gave people shelter for a couple of hours during this time of need. Unfortunately, I did not have that experience. I live in the area, and I've never been here before and will NEVER return--and I'll make sure everyone I know hears about this inhumane behavior. I'm still shaken up just thinking about it. The meal arrived with link sausage. We sent the plate back. It came with almost raw bacon. We sent the bacon back. There was no change to the bacon. We gave up. Drink orders were not remembered. The western burger is advertised with bbq sauce and fried onions. A takeout container of sauce came with a dry burger. The fried onions were two onion rings and sautéed onions. Last night, my friend and I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon, toast and a baked potato since the fries last time were soft and not tasty at all. The scrambled eggs were tasteless and flat, the bacon was inedible (and I eat almost anything), the toast was soggy and covered with something not buttery. The baked potato was grainy and old. My dad ordered a burger and the cheese was textured like plastic. Waitress was complaining that another table's full party didn't arrive, and was saying at 11:00 pm that they needed to order by 11:20, when the place closes at 12 am. I've been here twice now and haven't been fully satisfied on both occasions. I'll tell you why. SERVICE: Subpar to OK. Coffee refills were on point so that was OK. It took a handful of minutes for the waitress to get to our table, then a handful of minutes to order our food. Myself and my friend had both ordered toast that was included with our meals. The waitress noticed when we didn't receive the toast, and said she'd get some but never wound up bringing any. Welp. FOOD: OK It's a diner, and I order breakfast. It's pretty hard to screw that up. My (scrambled) eggs were significantly runny and under-cooked on the bottom side. If it's an overeasy or sunnyside up I don't mind the yolk running but not for scrambled eggs. And then there was a piece of bacon my friend ordered that was just a huge chunk or weird looking fat. That's on the cook to throw that piece out if it's one that's not edible. I am sad to say I was very disappointed with my experience at the Scotchwood Diner :( It was a really crowded day, so to a certain extent I understand the struggles that go along with that. I ordered a cheeseburger with mushrooms, well done. My cheeseburger was so rare inside and it seemed like only the outside was cooked. The mushrooms were not even grilled and just slapped onto the burger. The handful of fries that came with the meal were soggy and cold. The person I was with ordered a bacon cheeseburger well done which was also medium rare at best and came with no bacon. Not to mention everything was dripping in grease and sloppy. **RACIST INSULT** My family and I have been going to Scotchwood Diner for years and have always had a good time but today we had some challenges. A waitress looked at my son (who has locks in his hair) and said "Whoopi Goldberg". When confronted and asked if she said it, she admitted it. Once she saw that we were upset, she said that she didn't say it. Needless to say, she was checked. We didn't insult her, but instead we told our waitress Cindy, who reported the incident to the manager. Cindy was awesome and saved the day. She helped to make our dining experience a pleasant one. Atmosphere: The outside of the Scotchwood Diner is exactly what you picture in a diner. It's a giant metallic chrome building. The inside has plenty of booths, tables, a giant dessert case, and bar. If you're looking for stereotypical diner then the Scotchwood Diner is ideal. Coffee: The coffee was brewed hot and fresh each time. There was nothing special or extra ordinary about the coffee but it was good. Food: The Scotchwood Diner has everything you would want. It has at least a dozen pages of food. I've been eating out a lot lately so wanted a healthy salad. I ordered a Greek salad with chicken which was presented beautifully. Service: The waitress was extremely friendly and refilled our beverages often. She was one of the best waitresses I've had in a while. Dessert: My date's meal came with dessert and as the waitress was explaining the options, I thought the bread pudding sounded great. So much for eating healthy. The bread pudding was good, and there was less bread than pudding. Personally, I prefer more bread. It was good and I would order it again. After 4 years of driving by this diner, I finally had a chance to stop in for some breakfast with my Breakfast Club and honestly, it was a nice surprise. The decor is exactly what I would've imagined for a diner. So fun and lively. The service was good. Our waitress kept our coffee cups fresh and filled. My eggs Benedict was good. The hollandaise was well seasoned. The egg was perfectly poached and the home fries was good although I requested fries. I was in the neighborhood at a local car wash so we decided to stop in. I was immediately seated and a very friendly waitress came over and took our drink order and brought us coffee to start. It was fresh and hot. The breakfast menu was easy to read not 2o pages long like some diners, and we were able to make our choice very quickly. I ordered the farmer's omelette . Three eggs, sausage, potatoes and American cheese. It also was served with home fries and I got rye toast. My husband ordered Taylor ham egg and cheese on a hard roll with fries.(This is Jerzee after all and it is a must when ordering diner food in the am or late at night!!) My experience at The Scotchwood Diner tonight angered me so much it made me want to come straight home and write this. It took 10 minutes to be seated at 11:30 PM. There were very few other people in the diner, tons of waitresses sitting around, and the old manager guy at the front desk taking money. Only after 10 minutes of standing there did he finally tell one of the other staff members to find the hostess... not just seat us, FIND THE HOSTESS. You're telling me that waitress wasn't capable of putting a menu on a table? When I do finally sit and get around to ordering, I asked for a simple request. Please swap the fries in my meal for a caesar salad. I was told no. I thought she was joking at first. But she was serious, she told me they can't do that. I asked what about if I paid extra as an upcharge (I'm on a Keto diet and cant eat potatoes). She said nope, no substitutions of sides at all, the manager would not allow it. I asked about anything, anything else. A garden salad, something. She said no. I asked her to ask the manager anyway and tell him I am willing to pay an upcharge for the salad, she did ask him and he said no. I've never seen a business turn down extra money, absolutely ridiculous. So I ate my grilled chicken breast that I paid $14 for with no sides. If I wasn't absolutely starving and knew there were no other restaurants open that late around the area, I would have walked out. The level of disrespect to a customer with dietary requests (and not even something unreasonable, just a simple swap) was unbelievable. Furthermore, the waitress asked me if I'd ever done that before. "Swap a side?" "Yes" she'd answered. I told her it had never been an issue in any other restaurant I'd ever been to in my entire life, from McDonald's all the way up to 5 star restaurants both in the US and Europe. I've never been told you HAVE to have the side dish or no side at all even if you're offering to pay extra. She looked at me like I had ten heads, she couldn't believe there were restaurants out there that allowed this. On my way out, I asked the manager why this policy exists. He shrugged and said "it's what the owners say." I asked him why and he didn't know, and didn't seem to care that a customer was unhappy. I told him he should let the owners know that they likely have many customers unhappy with this ridiculous policy. His response was "the owners know, they really don't care." I left dumbfounded. For the record, the waitress did apologize and I understand it's not her fault, but it is the fault of everyone above her for not consistently telling the owners this is a dumb policy and one that is likely costing them business. I really do understand charging extra for salad swaps if you really want to deter people, but if they're willing to pay why is that still not allowed? Whether you have dietary restrictions or not, everyone should avoid this place like the plague just to stick it to these assholes who treat paying customers like shit. I'll never go back. read more

I enjoyed my diner experience here, my philly cheesesteak was able to get substituted easily for a wrap. Fries were good, the steak inside the wrap was very flavorful. 3.5 stars if I could - Look, this place isn't the best. I've been sat at an unbussed table (for 10 minutes before getting staff) and had dirty cups. I've had to send under-cooked food back (rarely). The place is also a little dirty - e.g. the nasty jukeboxes at booths I wouldn't touch with a rubber glove on. BUT, the breakfast here is the best I've had in the area. The pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, home fries, and coffee are all pretty good. You can't ask for much more, especially when your next best option is IHOP.
