"Honest dentist" is an oxymoron these days, unfortunately. Blame it on the insurance companies, perhaps, but this noble profession has been jaded by up-selling shysters armed with HD 3D cameras to scare you into optional services not covered by most dental plans. Dr. Pyon is the rare exception and a breath of fresh air. So happy I found him. He has a gentle, professional touch and a calming chair-side manner. Dr. Pyon in Palo Alto is amazing--and he is on our Dental Plan at Stanford that begins on September 1, 2015. He is so kind and unpretentious and he understands that people without insurance are concerned about money. He does not do excessive work just to make money. I have never met a dentist like him--especially in Silicon Valley. He is so down to earth:) My colleague at Stanford recommended him, so I know he does good work. Dr. Scott Pyon is an amazing dentist. He has been my dentist for the last three years, and I highly recommend him to anyone and to Stanford students in particular. Here are some reasons why: - Dr. Pyon personally performs every procedure. In particular, he performs routine cleanings himself, so he can clinically observe every tooth and spot problems as they appear. - For every problem (from wisdom teeth to a cavity), Dr. Pyon explains in detail how the situation could evolve, the available options, and their pros and cons. Then he lets the patient choose whether to intervene (and how) or whether to wait and see, with no pressure whatsoever. I always felt that I was fully in charge of my health care and well-informed, with an amazingly expert advisor at my side. - Dr. Pyon takes great care to explain every step of what he is doing, so one always feels involved. He will even show you with a portable mirror, if you wish (of course you can opt out if you are squeamish). - In general, Dr. Pyon will go above and beyond to make sure your teeth and mouth are healthy. At the same time, he will make sure you are fully informed and never pressure you to perform procedures that may be unnecessary. It is exceedingly clear when interacting with him that his one and only priority is the patient's health (and that how much insurance will reimburse him is not a factor at all). Other dentists' offices may have waiting rooms the size of a football field and smiling dental hygienists. Dr. Pyon did my teeth cleaning really well! It had been 3 years since my last dentist visit and I had bad build-up on my teeth and gum. He was very thorough with the job. The job took so long because of my build-up that my appointment ran over time to the next patient's appointment. But he wasn't hasty and still patiently cleaning every part of my teeth till they got to their perfectly clean state. I really appreciate his careful practice and patience. He also provided me lots of good advice for daily dental care and the procedure he recommended for the teeth I had had root canal done previously. OH my goodness...I can't believe I haven't written a review for Dr. Pyon yet. I've been his customer since 2008 originally because it is conveniently close to my work office and because I checked his credentials--when I was searching for dentist, I wanted one who studied at a reputable college known for its Dentistry training. His work seem very straightfoward. It's not "sexy" like the other places where they keep marketing cosmetic changes. He strictly does dental stuff for your oral health. His equipment is standard in a homely feeling environment. So, IMHO, if your mouth is pretty straightforward and you just want professional service without the glitz that some other dental offices have, then this is the place to go for sure. If you want the latest news and technology and cosmetry--I haven't been exposed to it. But he doesn't seem to be like that. Dr. Pyon is diligent and not much of a chatter--he presents things straight up (as another reviewer calls "chair-side manners." He's not born here (and as a fellow Asian who is sensitive to the differences between Asian and Asian-Americans) I give him leeway for that. His operations seem small--he does your biannual cleaning himself always. He may be less emotional (right word?) but you know he has no ulterior motive to upsell you or anything. Unfortunately I'm changing jobs and will have to--with a heavy heart--break our relationship. I'm hoping he forgives me, especially if he knows that some Yelpers were inspired to test and use his services. read more

I hate looking for a new dentist but after 5 years and moving across the bay, I wanted to find a dentist near Mt. View. My boyfriend went to Dr. Pyon twice and said he is a no nonsense dentist. He just cleans your teeth. No chit chatting. That sounded perfect for me. That's exactly what you get with Dr. Pyon. After 5 minutes of filling out form, I went in to get my teeth cleaning on time and was done in 30 minutes. The actual cleaning was pretty painless and that was the part I was scared about. My favorite dentist yet! He explained what he was doing and why he was doing what he was doing very thoroughly, drew many pictures for me and also handed me a mirror so that I could watch what he was doing. He has a very low-tech office but I felt in good hands. Price point: $32 for a 45-minute exam $102 for a filling (student discount?) I was almost tempted to add a donation to his bill. I have no idea how he makes ends meet, but his prices are most certainly fair. read more

I went to the dentist today for the first time in 3 years. There was definitely a lot of cleaning that needed to be done to my teeth. I was in the patients chair for an entire hour with Dr. Pyon there the whole time. I did not see any hygienists as Dr. Pyon seems to do everything himself including the cleaning. He is very meticulous and as a previous reviewer menitioned very friendly and no nonsense. When I had a borderline cavity, a lot of other dentists would have just said I needed to get it filled (more business for them), but Dr. Pyon showed me the cavity in a mirror, explained the definition of a cavity and why mine was considered borderline, and then explained to me my options (either have it filled, or just keep an eye on it and have it filled in the future if it gets worse). I would highly recommend Dr. Pyon and have basically signed up for Yelp just because I felt compelled to write this review. read more

I have been Dr. Pyron's client for more than 8 years. He is the best among many others I used before. He is honest, he is a very straight forward person. He works very hard himself. He does not sell me any unnecessary works or procedures. Always honest opinions that he sometimes turns away making more money. No hygienists or dedicated sale person hired in his clinic. Best dentist I've ever had. I started going to Dr. Pyon after my wife went there and returned with a rave review of how great he is. The next day we convinced her brother to go there too! We are total Dr. Pyon evangelists. Why are we so enthusiastic? He seems to truly care about being a member of a helping profession, unlike other dentists I've been to (overpaid plumbers, basically, with no empathy or understanding of what it's like to be a patient). He is gentle; he explains what he's doing as he does it; he's conservative in his treatment options and doesn't recommend unnecessary garbage... What more can I say? I love him. read more

Dr. Pyon looked fine as general dentist. He looks sincere and care. But, he definitely tried to do more than he can handle. he advised me to have root canal with him with lower price. He also claimed that it is very easy to perform root canal on the front tooth. The result is, my root canal is only half done. He also left a small piece of metal in my canal. Now, I might meed to go through oral surgery to remove it. It was a major mistake for me to choose him as my dentist by the recommendation of Yelp. For a simple tooth ache, he surely wasted all of my time, my money, and create a big problem for me. I hope he doesn't do the same thing to other patients. read more

Dr Pyon is an honest guy who doesn't recommend any unnecessary procedures and tells you all the costs up front. If you don't have insurance he will discuss discounts and work with you to get you the care you need. He cleans his patients' teeth himself instead of having a hygienist do it. I have only had routine cleanings because I've never needed any special procedures (cavities, root canals, etc), and have been very satisfied with Dr Pyon over the past few years. read more

I was seeing another dentist before who was not only inconsiderate of how much pain they might be causing me, but also charged me an arm and a leg and tried to hard-sell me every service imaginable. What a relief when I switched to Dr. Pyon. He provides the cleaning himself and he always does a great job with my teeth. He also explains my options honestly and doesn't recommend anything I don't really need. I'm new to the Bay Area and had no idea on dentists. So, of course I yelp everything. He was excellent. He owns the biz so his place/equipment are simple and modest. I didn't wait at all (one of my peeves with doctors). He meticulously and thoroughly cleaned my teeth. He doesn't talk too much - but that's good cause you can't really talk back. Afterwards he pointed out some issues with one tooth (even drew a diagram!!) He was gentle enough that I found it relaxing, actually - new for me, i'm usually very tense at the dentist. I've been to Dr. Pyon for regular cleans as well as an aesthetic fix for previous dental work from my childhood. He's fast, professional, and very personable. And, best of all, he has a great knack for preventing pain (when he can, of course). I actually like that he does all of this own work (even if that means pulling my records and replacing the water tank). He accepts my student health coverage, but even without my health plan his prices are extremely good. I can usually get an appointment within a week, which is also very nice. He doesn't put making money first and doesn't pressure me into getting unnecessary x-rays. His office is small and may not have all the decor of others, but who cares. After terrible experience with a dental office that was almost criminal about pushing unnecessary and expensive treatments, going to Dr. Pyon restored my faith in the dental profession. I have only been to Dr. Pyon once. I think he is not as nurturing as many previous dentists but he seems to be very scientific. I felt like his office was a safe and clean environment. Overall I had a good experience but I am now worried about some problem with my fillings. I have never had any problem in the past with fillings after they are done.
