Most places I consulted with either said that it's not worth saving them, just go buy new ones or were going to charge me up front just to do a home visit/assessment with no guarantee of fixing the issues. Working with Scott was easy and straightforward. I would use him again. Scott replaced the rubber door gasket on my front-loading washer. He arrived on time and had the job done within 30 minutes. He was pleasant and professional. Based on another Yelp review here, I visited the website Reliable Parts dot com and I was able to identify the new part that would be needed (which was easy to do. It helped that I had the washer's model number from the owner's manual). The week prior to our appointment, I picked up the new gasket from Reliable Parts on Ashby (this also happened to give me a week to recover from the shock that this part cost $200!). I suggest that you do this if you can, as I think it made things simpler and faster for when Scott arrived. Happiness is a once again working washer... and finding a great appliance repair guy in the process. As a mom of two very active boys (translation: sweaty) I'm not about to haul all of this stuff to a laundromat (it would smell up my car). So when my washer stopped filling up all the way, I called around to find someone who could help me ASAP. Called Scott on a Saturday and heard back from him that very day. He asked me a couple of questions and was able to make an educated guess on the problem. He even compromised with me on the time he could come by. His repair was quick, I got the Yelp discount, and he's a nice guy to boot (was even nice to my obnoxiously needy cat). The repair cost way less than the minimum with Galvin and he was able to be here today instead of Thursday (Galvin's earliest availability). Yay, a reliable fix-it guy!! Had to wait a week before he had time to come by, but now I see why he's in such demand: he answered e-mails promptly, showed up on time, was neat and clean, brought the parts needed (having asked me lots of questions about the problem before he arrived), answered questions and gave advice on upkeep. He fixed my washing machine in no time, helped get it level, and even helped me figure out how to get deep into my dryer to clear out lint. All at a very reasonable price. Here's what I want in a repair person: Clean presentation, friendly, focused on work, affordable, trustworthy. Scott is fantastic - all these things and more. In particular, he was able to complete the repair of our washing machine in a timely manner, while explaining every aspect of the project to my technically inclined 4 year old. Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator cost me $195 for service and parts with Scott for a unit that failed one week later. Scott was seemingly very helpful with recommending a part for my fridge with an accompanying video on how to install the part. It looked simple, so I ordered the part. Unfortunately, it was the wrong part ($70) and is non-returnable. The original part for the fridge may have been replaced by someone else with another type of part (fridge was in the kitchen when we bought the house). After a few emails with Scott, we were finally able to get him to come in and look at the unit. He replaced the part that was broken for $125. He suggested that I could return the unit to the store (which he also recommended in Berkeley), although as noted, it was non-returnable (I have yet to find a hardware store that accepts electronic parts for return). Unfortunately, the fridge failed one week later. Scott could not make it to our house for a few days, so he recommended someone else, who suggested that the compressor was broken, if the part that Scott replaced was correct. However, that person does not work on refrigerators, so he referred me to someone else, who does not service my area. However, he also suggested that the compressor was probably broken, which would be expensive to replace (labor + service call) and that I should probably replace the fridge, which is what we did. As noted by others, Scott seems to be a well-meaning person, who actually tries to save you money by suggesting parts and video links to help you solve the problem. Hence, two stars vs. 1. However, he does not seem to have the diagnostic tools needed to service a refrigerator, which he should have used when he did visit to "fix" the unit. Not a good experience and I will not call Scott again. $195, over 4 hours spent cleaning the fridge after it was "fixed", and multiple efforts to move items in and out of the fridge into coolers. I had a problem with my old old Maytag washer, and called Scott. I got a prompt reply with a recommendation to check for a simple issue which I could fix myself. I appreciate this; he could have just as easily shown up and done it himself and cheated me. But, moot point. It wasn't that. Scott is a throwback - a honest businessman who won't rip you off. Case in point, he came out during a holiday weekend at no extra charge to repair my commercial dryer in an apartment building I own. He was on time and took care of it lickety split. Parts and labor, under a bill. You can't beat that. As you can imagine, a fair honest repairman is never out of work and it is apparently very true with Scott. I had to wait a tad to get on his schedule but it was well worth it. Scott came to our home to fix our dryer and dishwasher. I can't say enough great things about him and my experience doing business with him. Such a nice and friendly guy. He offered advice and guidance via email as well as walking me through things while here at the house. All together he came to my home 3 times, first time to fix dryer and figure out what was wrong with the dishwasher, the second time he returned with the part he ordered for me and installed it, and the 3rd time was because a fuse randomly went out. I just wanted to add my voice to the many glowing reviews for Scott because he totally deserves them. Scott has been out twice to repair our appliances: in early 2019 for our very old Frigidaire dryer that wouldn't spin and again this month for our almost 10-yo Bosch dishwasher that wasn't pumping water. Before he came out, he had us run little tests to clarify the problem and recommended videos we could watch in case we wanted to fix the appliance ourselves. He told us what part we needed to order, came out (on time) within a few days of our receiving the part, worked efficiently and fixed our problems. Also, our dishwasher is raised above floor level in a custom built cabinet and he got it out for the repair and reinstalled without any damage to the cabinet. Although we had minimal contact with him this time because of the virus, during our 2019 visit we were really impressed at how clearly Scott explained the problem and the fix and how open he was to questions. And when he left, we both said to each other, "What a great guy!". read more

Don't make the mistake of thinking a refrigerator is an appliance! Was in a pinch with my busted fridge and Scott eventually wrote back to say "I don't work on refrigerators". What?!? Many of the reviews specifically mention Scott fixing their fridge and there is nothing anywhere on his website that says the refrigerator is appliance non grata. Either Scott gave a lame excuse to get a day off, he's got people writing fake reviews, or he recently swore off refrigerators. It's no good any way you slice it. read more

Scott seems like a good guy, and maybe he does good work, but sadly I wouldn't know because setting up an appointment with him was so incredibly frustrating. After three days of e-mail tag (never a phone call) for a simple repair on a washing machine, I gave up and called another fellow who was able to get in that afternoon and do the work. He never once was able to quote me a set appointment time. Instead, I'd get these e-mails about an available window within 1-3 hours of the e-mail. I'd reply, make adjustments to my schedule, head over, and then find some time after the appointment opening that the appointment was taken up by another customer. This kind of thing is as much a part of the customer experience as the quality of the work itself. How does somebody with a 9-5 job just drop everything with less than 3 hours notice to get their washing machine fixed? Scott needs to take this seriously and set up a schedule like most other handymen/contractors do. Wasted 3 days on this, basically, when it could've been done by somebody else probably on the first day. Again, incredibly frustrating. read more

DOESN'T RETURN CALLS I hate leaving bad reviews for someone who got a lot of great ones, but I really resent being ignored when I leave messages needing help and service. He might be a great repair guy, but I'll never know. I left him 2 phone messages about 3 days apart. That was about 2 weeks ago. To this day he has NEVER bothered to call me back at all. With all these great reviews he got I couldn't believe it. I waited about an extra week with a busted washing machine before finally calling someone else out of frustration (THEY called me back the same day). Oh btw I do realize the phone msg he has says "The quickest way to reach me is probably by email" but I had a lot of questions and knew I'd have more based on his answers,so I really wanted to "talk" to him, not get involved in a back and forth email thing. What he does NOT say is he'll totally ignore you if you have the audacity to actually leave him a message on his phone mail requesting a call back. Scott - here's a suggestion. On your outgoing message let ppl know you won't call them back if they leave a phone message after the beep. That would have at least saved me a week of waiting for you to respond. If you were on vacation you should have updated your msg, that's what responsible business ppl do. read more

My 18 year old microwave was acting up. Sometimes it would work, other times it didn't. I found Scott here on Yelp! and messaged him with my microwave model # and explained its symptoms. Scott responded back to me within a few hours and said it was likely a switch problem and we scheduled an appointment.
