This place is practicing deceptive menu prices. I ordered the 3 pc fish and chip dinner. Wife ordered the one pc fish and chips. My dinner when served had one normal size and 3 spoon size pcs of fish. I had already asked Sandy to not let that happen again because we had that same existence a few months back. When she returned with the other 2 pcs it was a 1/2 pc of fish cut in half again. Detroit staple of fried fish. First of all, CASH only. I am not sure how long this landmark been around, but I am glad this small business is still open. Big pieces of cod, fresh, hot, crunchy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. Reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because even though fish is great, It is supposed to be fish and chips, not fish and soggy fries. Chips are thicker cuts of potato and crispy. Sadly Scotty's has declined. We've been going for year s and the last 2 times have been horrible. The 3 pieces are 1/2 the size they used to be. The fish was so greasy. At those prices we wont be back which makes me sad. We really wanted it to work. read more

This was a surprising find! My brother found this place after I was complaining about having no good fish in the area. I was so impressed! The atmosphere is straight out of the 70/s, but the food and service were 11/10. The staff was super kind and the fish was delicate and delightful. Fresh, hot and crunchy -- my favorite! Dont go to this place if your hungry. Pieces of fish are bite size. Its a disgrace Its like one pice of fish cut into 3 small pieces heard other tables complaining about the size portions also. We aren't lucky enough to have any old school fried seafood places left. There are other things to get on the menu but that fish is so light a flakey I haven't attempted to try anything else. I took a one day trip from Cleveland to Detroit to see the Van Gogh in America exhibit at the DIA; after the museum I wanted to grab a bite to eat before heading home and the Yelp reviews for Scotty Simpson's caught my attention. Located North West of downtown near I-96 in a bit of a run down neighborhood you find Scotty Simpson's on a corner with its own lot across the street. I arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon and the place was pretty quiet. There is a nice old school dining room with the open kitchen in the back. Decor is comfortable, casual and has the worn in look that is authentic and real. This is a nice hole in the wall place. The menu is not huge, rather it seems to be concentrated on the things they do well and have done for a very long time. I ordered the Fish and Chips and they were nice enough to substitute the onion rings for the chips. The server was friendly and helpful, although she was busy taking down the Christmas tree and the decorations. The meal came up fairly quickly hot and fresh. The 3 pieces of cod were amazing with a very crispy batter around very fresh mild white fish. The onion rings were also outstanding light and crispy with sweet onion inside. The slaw was very nice, lightly dressed and with a nice crunch. On the side was tarter sauce, lemons and a roll and butter. Overall this was a really good traditional fried fish meal expertly prepared. If you are looking for a really good place to get some excellent food in a fun relaxed atmosphere at a reasonable price Scotty Simpson's is well worth a visit. About the only downside for me was that it is 3 hours drive from my home. read more

We just finished our dinner at Scotty Simpson's. Every bite was perfection. Two snaps up and a chef's kiss! The frogs legs were perfectly prepared. This business raised prices due to various costs. I understand that. However, they are cutting their portion sizes of fish. A fish dinner is supposed to have 3 pieces of fish. When I picked up my order, it had 1 decent sized piece of fish and 2 very small pieces which did not even make up one piece. It was like barely getting 2 pieces. I did reach out to the business via messenger but they have not had the courtesy of responding. So much for caring about their customers !! There used to be a fish place in Dearborn that used to be packed all of the time. They raised their prices PLUS cut back on portion size. Pretty soon the place wasn't packed any more and they closed up. Wonder if that's the future for Scotty Simpsons if they continue to NOT care about their customers. It is a fish and chips restaurant. The food is amazing. Perfect every time the service is impeccable pretty much a family run business. If you remember the old fish and chips restaurants this is that they make their own coleslaw from scratch and they used to have homemade pie, not sure if that tradition is carrying on our favorite waitress is Rachel. read more

I was fully prepared to love this place because it really has the air of a hidden gem, not to mention the history and the great reviews. Fish flown in daily from Nova Scotia?!? I'm in! The problem is that the food just wasn't that good. Okay, yes. Outstanding, or the best fish I've ever had? Not a chance! Fish was overly breaded (and the breading was pretty tasteless) and the coleslaw was totally dry. The best part of the meal was the roll, which the sign at the register said was from a local bakery and the only thing not made in-house. The pies looked good but we passed on dessert. If the hubs wants to go back, I'd give it another try but I wouldn't be disappointed if we never return. read more
