My mother and I stopped here for dessert today after lunch and really enjoyed the pastries that we had. I ordered the peach apple pie and she ordered the baked apple tart. Both were excellent: freshly prepared with lots of fresh ingredients. The taste of the pastries was robust (vs. subtle) and that was the kind of flavor we were after. They also weren't too sweet, which often happens with pastries. We ordered at the counter (there is no table service) and took the pastries to our table outside. Scratch has done it again! Today we bought the Hazelnut ganache cake It is ammmazzzing! Our refrigerator was crazy cold the cake texture was like a very high quality ice cream cake. The texture was beautifully firm but soft. The whipped cream was creamy, hazelnut was mild but noticeable, chocolate rich and decadent. All the layers were balanced with delicate and robust flavors. Scratch bakery is my family's g-to for most holidays and birthdays. It is now a small chain, but we have always gone to this location. Scratch offers breakfast and lunch options if you'd like to sit in the very small seating area. We order ahead most of the time for specialty cakes and pies. They do offer some gluten-free options, such as seasonal gluten-free pies, and they occasionally have things like a gluten-free doughnut. You can buy premade bags of bread and cookies or you can buy from the counter on the day: anything from patisserie style eclairs to cookies, donuts, and cupcakes. Although they are tasty and reliable, they are not my all-time favorite bakery. But they are my mom's! We will be loyal Scratch customers for a long time to come. read more

She ordered the Reuben sandwich and the gluten-free bread was burnt. She asked for mustard on the sandwich when it arrived and there wasn't any. I walked in politely and asked for a sight of mustard and was met with the responsive. You need to make sure that you ask for it next time. Been coming here for 2 years with my mom! Cody, I'm sorry that I stopped by 5 minutes before the store closed. I genuinely do not know why you chose to fixate on my wording; I walked in and asked if I could grab a pastry, you pointed at strawberry envelopes sitting on the back counter and said one on the house because that's all that was left for the day. I got confused, because I saw some options still in the glass; you said well those aren't pastries those are desserts, but yes you can grab one of those. I then said okay, and asked if I could take a coconut custard slice. You looked at me and said "well that's a cake. Which is why I told you all we had left was this...." and pointed towards the back counter. I genuinely have NO IDEA what just happened. I've never had somebody treat me like I'm an idiot just because I didn't use the right terminology for a baked good. I've purchased the exact same item for my mom for years and I've never had the interaction that we just had. You were very friendly at the beginning and I have no idea why your annoyance was so evident by the time I walked out. I absolutely love the food at Scratch Bakery Cafe. Everything there is so delicious. I had the Banana Knock Knock. It was so decadent and scrumptious. The staff at Scratch are all so friendly and welcoming. Of particular note is Codie, the assistant manager it was always so hospitable, friendly and welcoming. She does everything to ensure food and service is my way at the highest level of quality. Additionally, Codie always can be found walking around and chatting with patrons. Scratch was amazing! We ordered Door Dash for an office lunch for two colleagues who don't eat gluten. One has Celiac disease and can get very sick. When I called to ask about cross contamination for my celiac colleague, the manager was honest that they use one bread slicer, which we appreciated! My colleague chose a salad, said it was delicious and felt great. My other colleague, who does not eat dairy or gluten as a choice, ordered Sammie on their gluten free bread, and said it was delicious. We will definitely be back! read more

I apologized and told her it was my first time here. Two of the items on the website were no longer available which was a disappointment. The girl said they needed to update their website. After ordering my goodies were brought out really fast. Quality/Quantity: Strawberry croissant was great but small, much smaller than I've seen. Chocolate croissant was over baked and borderline burnt. Cheese danish was really good. It was flaky and crispy which was a nice surprise. The plain croissant was equally good. Nice bakery cafe. Huge variety of desserts, and they also bake their own bread including English Muffins. Their bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a light fluffy English Muffin is great. They also have an awesome hash brown patty. Coffee is nice and bold. You can buy bags of bread, home made Chex mix, cookies, etc. They even make whole cakes, little cake bites, and cake pops. I recommend coming around 11 am and noon. This place gets really busy during actual breakfast time, 8, 9, 10 am. We showed up at 11:30 am. A party of 4 adults and 2 kids. The place was not busy at all. No waiting in line. Lots of choices. Staff was on point, very helpful, excellent recommendations, excellent attitude. Cool atmosphere in this place. Food was ready quickly, since it wasn't busy! Also, lots of dessert choices lol. They also do cakes, for birthdays and celebrations! Definitely will recommend this place. No indoor seating so on a cool day wear warm clothes. Plenty of tables, some with umbrellas. Ordered two salads, one chicken salad which was a scoop of tasty chicken salad on a large bed of greens. The other was a summer salad which was berries, apples & feta cheese on mixed greens. Both were good, not phenomenal just good. Chicken salad was a much better value for the price as you don't have to add a protein for extra cost. Both salads came out in a plastic "to go" box, guess they only use disposable containers & utensils. Service was friendly. Great spot! Wide open, bright and clean with a long case full of beautiful pastries. They also offer a large menu of breakfast items, including sandwiches, burritos and French toast. I had the veggie burrito with egg whites and it was delicious . . . very fresh tasting. My son enjoyed the Monte Cristo sandwich as well. I was running an early morning errand and found myself at Oakbrook Village Shopping Center, where Scratch Bakery is located, around 8am on a weekday. I hadn't had anything to eat yet so ordered a couple pastries and a vanilla latte. They had quite a number of pastries to choose from and I ended up deciding on a cinnamon roll (warmed up) and a chocolate croissant. There was no seating inside but a large number of tables set up outside. My pastries and latte were handed to me right away and I took a seat in the patio area. The latte was okay; a sweeter version with average coffee. The large cinnamon roll was mostly a winner. The bread of the roll was fresh and soft and the icing gooey-delicious. The amount of cinnamon was perfect except in the outer ring which was too thick, plain, and "bready". I chose to ignore a lot of that outer ring, pretending it just didn't exist. The chocolate croissant was excellent. Again, it was very fresh and soft. The buttery flavor of the croissant meshed well with the dark chocolate. The chocolate filling was the perfect amount and wasn't overly sweet. Not a crumb was left. They have a variety of other things aside from their fresh pastries - cakes, tarts, breads, etc. and also offer a variety of sandwiches and hot breakfasts. read more

I don't know why it took me this long to come to Scratch Bakery, but I'm glad I did! Scratch Bakery is a solid place to come for their croissants, pastries, bread loaves, and breakfast burritos. I tried so many things here and loved every single thing! I do feel that some of their items are priced really high, but for the most part, their prices are comparable to places that offer similar items. My only complaint is that there was hardly any avocado in the Vegetarian Breakfast Burrito. At $8.95, I expected to be able to at least see avocado, but there was hardly any (see photo). I still recommend the Vegetarian Burrito despite the lack of avocado because it is so good and very hefty (just a little over a pound)! read more

OCRW 2022 Review Food: 3.5 Price: 4.5 (Good bang for your buck! ~$13 savings!) I came here today around 2:30 and picked-up the 2 for $20 picnic. There are only 2 options for the sandwiches: Grinder and Turkey bacon and I got one of each. The grinder came with potato salad and turkey bacon had a fruit salad as a side. I didn't eat the sandwiches since today is Friday but lover said it was a normal tasting sandwich. He said the bread was also a little hard, which I tried and agreed. It wasn't as fresh. However, the sides were good and fresh. The chocolate and vanilla cream puffs are also good and the lemonade refreshing. It is on the tart side but not too sweet. Overall I would give this place 3.0 stars based on these sandwiches, however with the ocrw deal, this got bumped up to 4.0 stars. My cheapness won today since the yummy dessert and drinks balanced out the okay sandwiches. Give this place a try before OCRW is over tomorrow! read more

I didn't go in to make the actual order but my mom who did said everyone was super friendly and patient with her. It was her first time at the bakery and it was very hard for her to decide what to order because apparently everything looked amazing! I ordered the pastrami sandwich. It was so amazing. Hot pastrami, fried egg, grilled onions, perfection. Definitely recommend this sandwich if you want a warm and filling sandwich! For my pastries, I chose the mocha cake and chocolate cream puffs. Both were great. The mocha cake was super fluffy. I was expecting regular custard cream in the puff but it was actually chocolate cream. It was a nice surprise! For health reasons, I'm stuck with the FODMAP diet for a while. Part of this diet is avoiding wheat products. Since this place has some gluten free bakery goods I thought that I'd give it a try. The gluten free bread was a good value at around $9 for 34 ounce loaf. In comparison, Sprouts sells Schar gluten free bread at $7.50 for a 14 ounce loaf. Unfortunately, all gluten free bread based upon rice flour is a disappointment compared to wheat based breads. The ones using oats flour or other types of grains tend to be a tad less crumbly. But, they're even harder to find. I had a couple of the gluten free pastries. The best one by far was the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake. It was excellent. Because it was so moist you really couldn't tell it was gluten free. Can't say the same for the Chocolate Chip Raspberry Scone. Although it tasted good, it was just too crumbly for a scone. Which is funny because usually I complain about scones being too dense. You have to give this place credit for having a few gluten free bakery goods on their menu. I've read a few reviews from people complaining about how they gouge on their gluten free offerings. Well folks, that's life. The gluten free flours are harder to work with than wheat. And, the market for them is smaller. So, what do you expect? These people have to make a living. I've read some absolutely crazy negative reviews about this place. Like it wasn't open for Thanksgiving for breakfast and they were"forced" to go to Denny's. Or, another one that waited until the last minute to pick-up some pastries and "had to go to a dinner party empty-handed" because they were closed by the time they got there. Like there aren't any other bakeries in the world. I'm glad that I'm retired now so that I don't have to deal with the entitled nut cases that live in Orange County. Although I didn't find everything "perfect", it was all pretty good. And, that Dulche de Leche Cheesecake was perfect. To me anyway. read more

Very friendly staff who recommended me to try the fruit tart (seasonal) which was absolutely delicious. The tart crust was well baked but not too hard to bite. It had a very nice flavor. The patisserie cream at the bottom of the tart and the fruits were all so fresh and delicious - a special note to the fig, that was very tasty. I was tempted to the bakery after seeing the pctures of their English muffins. Since they weren't sourdough English muffins, they didn't have that crispy crust and that chew but for regular English muffins they were top quality. If I'm in a pinch, I would get these English muffins again. They toasted very nicely, with lots of salted butter on, they are scrumptious.
