Was in town for a concert, this was a great restaurant near the VRBO I stayed in. Casual atmosphere, freshly prepared food and the staff were friendly. Portions were good. I'd eat here in the future.

AWARENESS: My daughter and I were in the Apex area and decided to find a nice place for dinner. After opening the Yelp app, looking at reviews and pictures, we decided to give Scratch Kitchen & Taproom and go. NARRATIVE: Due to construction in the parking lot behind Scratch Kitchen (Temple Street), we ended up entering the restaurant from the N. Salem Street. And before going in, I noticed the signage above the building says; Tobacco & Mule Exchange. I'm not sure of the buildings history but the buildings interior has a story. Entering from the Salem Street side, you'll pass several shops and a unique bar / barber shop and Scratch Kitchen is located at the end of the hallway on the left. When we arrived at the podium, just outside the restaurant, we were promptly greeted and seated and within the minute, our server and his "shadow" server greeted us and introduced themselves. And after going over the menu and special meals for the day, our drink orders were taken. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Sushi Round as our appetizer; "Spicy ahi tuna with avocado, cucumber and wake over a seared sushi rice patty with edamame and fried green tomato. Topped with wasabi-miso crema and mirin-soy glaze." It was presented and tasted just as good as it sounds. For the main dish, I had to get the Shrimp & Grits; "Cheddar stone ground grits with seared shrimp and pork belly, peppers, onions and a creamy gochugaru sauce. Topped with green onions." And as you can see by not only my photos but others on Yelp, it was an amazing choice and amazing meal. I don't recall what my daughter had as her main but she said it was really good. SCENE: Scratch Kitchen & Taproom is located in the downtown area of Apex. Parking, especially when city workers are doing construction in the rear lot (Temple Street) can be a challenge. I also noted a man, who had too much to drink did order and get a ride from either an Uber or Lyft which is great if you don't want to drive or worry about parking. RECOMMENDATION(S): Scratch Kitchen is quant with that small town feel. Service from the staff was top notch and genuine and could be felt during our interacts with them. The food and its presentation were exemplary so yes, I'll highly recommend a visit. I know I'll be back.

Even tough the BBQ bowl is gone its replacement the Tropical Chicken Bowl at Scratch in Apex is a standout--bright, fresh, and surprisingly satisfying. The chicken is tender with a subtle char, the pineapple adds just the right pop of sweetness, and the citrusy sauce ties everything together without feeling heavy. It's the kind of bowl that tastes like summer in the best way and leaves you feeling good afterward.

Our last stop before returning home after our long weekend in Raleigh was this place. Wow! It was so comfy and relaxing. My daughter and I had the sandwiches with sides. Omg! The sandwiches were heaven. The potato salad was riveting with so much flavor. It became one of my favorite side dishes to have there. The atmosphere is fresh and airy. There is an outside patio the weather was nice for that but we decided to a high top table. The waitress was nice and with good customer service. Everything was great. Thank you.

I've been here several times for dinner, but this is my first lunch experience. Service was good and I really liked the lunch specials menu. Had the tropical chicken bowl and enjoyed it. The food is always good but the price point is a bit high for lunch.

I truly wanted to like this place, but my experience left me very disappointed. We came for brunch on a Saturday morning and sat outside. The table was wobbly, so we ended up using the soaked napkins they provided to stabilize it. The food was just okay -- nothing special. We ordered the burger and steak & eggs, along with a French press coffee that arrived lukewarm. Service, however, was the real issue. I had to ask for a steak knife to cut the burger, a spoon, hot sauce, and black pepper for the grits. Our waitress took several minutes to bring any of these items, despite helping other tables promptly. We waited so long that we ended up cutting the burger with a butter knife. She finally brought the items after we'd already started eating. Throughout the meal, she was inattentive. At one point, another waitress brought a to-go order we didn't place. We told her it wasn't ours -- twice. Even after clarifying, our waitress came back with the same bag and asked again. It turned out it belonged to the table behind us. When we finished, our check sat on the table for over 10 minutes until I flagged down the hostess. Even then, my card wasn't taken right away. I asked to pay via Apple Pay but was told the terminal wasn't working, so I ended up paying with my card. To top it off, there were a lot of flies. Every other table had a fly-repellent fan, but we did not. I had high hopes, but between the slow and inattentive service, the mix-ups, and feeling overlooked compared to other guests, I can't see myself coming back. What a shame

I landed on Scratch Kitchen as kind of a roll of the dice for dinner on our way back home from the Raleigh/ Apex area. After "Yelp surfing" we landed on Scratch Kitchen and couldn't have been happier. We were fortunate where we were going for a late, late lunch (or really early dinner) so there was no line. It did start to build up when we were leaving so I think we timed it perfectly, accidentally. The experience started when the water brought a tray of what looked to be three large mints. He then poured hot water over the "mints" which quickly expanded into hand towels. That was a really nice touch. We started our meal with pimento cheese won tons. I wasn't a fan because I felt it was mostly wonton and not alot of cheese flavor. They were good but I missed the cheese. Our entrees consisted of the Buddha Bowl, Pad Thai and the mac and cheese burger (we were all over the place). everything was absolutely amazing. Tons of flavor and very high quality ingredients. The burger was probably the best. It comes with a huge ball of fried mac and cheese. Lastly was our dessert. We ordered the mud jar and a strawberry cheesecake. The server mistakenly brought the chocolate cheesecake. After apologizing he ran to correct it but we decided to keep the chocolate cheesecake to try as well (yes we got the strawberry cheesecake and paid for all three). The chocolate cheesecake he brought by mistake was in no way a mistake. The heavens opened and brought this dessert straight from up above. This had to have been the best dessert I've had in a long, long time. The chocolate was so thing and rich and it was accompanied by house made whip cream. This is a definite when you go.

The food here is great. I ended up eating the Smokehouse Mac & Cheese and it did not disappoint. Even without the bbq sauce, I thought this meal was so flavorful. The BBQ had amazing flavor, the mac and cheese was creamy and the fried onions on top were a great textural addition to the dish. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. They have both inside, outside, and bar seating. They do not offer reservations so plan accordingly. I will be eating here again!

This was a team dinner. Another colleague of mine arrived late. And my other team members had already ordered some appetisers. The ambiance was casual. I arrived in time to try firecracker shrimp. And the fries. They were delicious even though it was cold. I ordered sesame salmon. The risotto rice was not bad for me. The salmon was perfect not dry. And the rice was subtle but delicious. I like something that is not heavily seasoned so this was perfect for me. The roasted seaweed was a little strange for me. But otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. There was a lot of parking on both sides of the mall.

Seating is plentiful with inside and outside seating. Service ordering was quick and responsive. Meal came out quickly and timely manner. Green tomato stacks were surprisingly flavorful and delicious, Bibimbap bowl was colorful, flavorful and filling. Service after was disappointing even if I was by myself I wasn't checked on or had water refilled. Look forward to trying again, hopefully Service will be better as it was only moderately busy Tues. night. Many tasteful looking options here.

So this is the last stop on my North Carolina vacation, our server was Eric and he was very attentive and accommodating. The food was amazing, especially the brussels sprouts, even if you're not a brussels sprouts person, you would've loved these. Pictures not shown kids meals, chicken tenders and French toast serve with potatoes and fruit. I highly recommend when you're in North Carolina especially Apex area, visit this Resturant.

Cute little spot in downtown apex. Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the honeydew cocktail I got, but that was by far the best thing there!! It had house made flavored honeydew syrup! As far as the service, they were pretty busy and the waitress didn't check in on us too much or ask us if we wanted another cocktail but other than that food was great

Very different from downtown cary, and very good. The food was very good, the service staff was very good, the seating options at lunch were very good, parking was fine, the ambiance was very nice. Nice sized bar, comfy and clean. In general, the management had a steady presence, and the food was very timely and tasty. Completely different than Cary... fortunately for apex! Had firecracker shrimp and the steak salad. Nice medium rare on the steak.

I'm always down for a Pork Chop date. I finally visited @scratchapex. Their dishes are made from scratch, with careful attention to details, and they focus on southern hospitality. Scratch Apex is located in the heart of Downtown Apex with indoor, patio, and outdoor seating! Before we were seated, our temperature was taken and our waiter met us with heated towels to cleanse and freshen our hands! In addition, their food is delicious. I can tell each dish was thoughtful crafted with love. Their portions are huge! I saved half of my pork chop for later. This place is boyfriend and I's favorite spot in downtown Apex. Service is always great and it's such a cute spot that I cheer up just walking over there. My favorite dishes: Spicy Tuna Sushi Round I love this crispy patty of rice topped with spicy tuna and edamame tomato garnish. The sauces really tie it together perfectly. So fresh and yummy! Smoke Pimento Cheese Wonton This is a heavier appetizer but you can never go wrong with cheese wontons! I highly suggest this place. Service is awesome. You are offered hand towels and Chex mix at the beginning. Food is amazing. Drinks are amazing. We requested seating near the fireplace and loved it. Ambiance is classy but not overdressed. I felt comfortable with jeans but received white tablecloth atmosphere. We will be back. read more

Scratch is great. Great service, great food, great drinks. I live down the street and come here all the time. I've given them a 5 star review before but I've come back hoping management will see this review and make a change. The last 2 times I've been there, the dishes have been dirty. Silverware has markings, the appetizer plates had crumbs on them. Lastly, there was a hair in my drink tonight. Food was great per usual, but the cleanliness hasn't been there. read more

We went here for cocktails and an appetizer on Sunday. If you like southern cooking and/or you like to eat a hearty, this is the place for you! We had the scratch fries with ribeye steak and they were piled high with loads of flavor! We shared it between the two of us but it could have easily been shared by more. The cocktails list, in particular, gave it a solid five stars. We have an old-fashioned with brown butter and it was so great. They also have many other unique cocktails that are not offered other places, making this a great stop. I liked the fireplace and the way everything was decorated. The porch was a good place to eat for people wanting to eat outside yet not freeze, since it was insulated. Will definitely be back for brunch! read more

Our local place pre-covid. During the pandemic they have been fabulous. We continue To support the restaurant with curbside. We order online, pickup curbside. The staff is masked as they bring your food out in a tray and you grab your bags. They spray down tables in between guests. It's good to see a restaurant care as much about the health and safety of its customers as it does about the quality and taste of its food. Ok now on to the food! The Pulled pork burger was delicious with a Smokey flavor and tons of juiciness. So juicy that the bun was almost porridge by the time we got to open the curbside food at our house. The Mac n cheese burger was good too and so where the delicious Brussels sprouts we got with it. Kimchi fries are ridiculous and need to be ordered!!! read more

My wife and I visited for brunch. They had a 20 mins wait despite the restaurant being almost empty. The service was slow and the food was just awful. One of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in a very long time and definitely not worth the hefty price that these guys are charging. For appetizer we ordered the five spice cauliflower and the batter was not thoroughly cooked so we had to send the appetizer back. For entrees my wife ordered shrimp and grits and I ordered their scratch toast which came with the side of potatoes. The shrimp and grits were awful to taste and seemed stale. My side of potatoes also seemed frozen and not freshly cooked. read more

I guess since there's not much around in apex this place get great reviews. It's just American food dressed up some. If you're from a more developed area and someone says this place is the best, they are not wrong compared to other offerings. But, it's nothing new or special. Food is okay but rather greasy and heavy. I think it was hyped up way too much and is just an average local restaurant. read more

Not terrible but not great. We waited 30 minutes for a table, 40 minutes for our food. Which we then realized the descriptions of the dishes were a lot more appetizing than the actual food. Ordered the eggs benedict with breakfast potatoes which came out room temp. Potatoes were not cooked at all and the eggs benedict was dry. Also had the bibimbap bowl and the whole dish was COLD. read more

Holy crowded. I went here on a week night and had a 50 minute wait - wasn't expecting that. And it is so loud inside due to the design of the ceiling. You can order drinks at the bar while you wait but we stood there 10+ minutes trying to get up there to order a beer and they wouldn't let us put it on the same tab as our dinner. By the time I ended up sitting down to order I was ravenous and disappointed by how small my burger was. I have to give props for how delicious the burger itself was - very tasty and fresh ingredients in a gourmet bun. I probably wouldn't return though due to how crowded it was. read more

Visited the Cary location tonight based off of some of the good reviews on this yelp page. However, the food was subpar and not worth the price. We got the cast iron chicken, fire cracker shrimp, and general tsao's cauliflower. The fire cracker shrimp was okay -- the breading fell off of almost every piece of shrimp, but did taste good. The cast iron chicken tasted good, but the Brussel sprouts were not seasoned well and were quite bland. The cauliflower itself was good, but the there was so much sauce that the rice underneath was soggy and mushy. For the cost of the food, it was not worth it. However, maybe we just came on an off day. Despite this, I would be willing to give this place a second chance and try different menu items (i.e. their burgers, sandwiches, drinks) because of all the great reviews below. read more

Okay, I really wanted to like this place. I've been five times but the service is terrible; and the food is average - at best. We waited 20 minutes for a server to even come over, and she was sitting, chatting with other staff, in the corner of the restaurant. The ambiance is great but I've brought visiting friends the last two times and have been let down by my choices. Hope they can work out some of these things in the future! read more

I keep coming back. Our dishes today were ok. The Smoked tomato spinach salad had too much dressing. Would order dressing on the side. Salad turned out soupy. Pork belly bites was gooey, especially the bottom half of the dish where brussel sprouts and pork belly sat. Took the dish home to add more roasted brussel sprouts to cut the dish. The cast iron chicken was good. Recommend that dish. Service was great. read more

Disgusting. Flavorless food. Don't believe the hype. Good customer service, however the food is missing major flavors. It's sad to waste hard earned money $85 on unpleasant food. I'm a foodie at heart, and this was a major disappointment, even the wait was ridiculous over an hour. read more

Definitely one of my favorite places here. Everything is so flavorful. I love coming back and trying all the new specials that they have. Their drink menu is great! The chicken sandwich surprised me with how flavorful it was. You'd think it would be boring but it's delicious. The mac n cheese is amazing. The pork belly bites are so good, it's fried brussel sprouts and pork belly but it doesn't taste greatest. The desserts are always delicious. The buddha bowl is perfect for vegetarians. Honestly whatever you get here is going to be great. I like to try new restaurants a lot so I am not much of a repeat customer unless the place is amazing. This is one of them. If you go and it's lackluster, it might just be one of those nights, it'll be worth it to come back. read more

I randomly chose this place to meet my in-laws for Sunday afternoon lunch. I didn't know Apex had such a cute Downtown area! We love the atmosphere of the restaurant but it was such a beautiful day that we got to sit outside. The vibe was peaceful and chill even though they were very busy. We got the loaded fries to start and they were amazing! My mother-in-law complained that they weren't hot but I didn't mind because the flavors were so good. Everyone else got a different burger variety and they all loved them. I tried the Bibimap Bowl- it was lovely and fresh just as expected. We fully enjoyed our entire experience and can't wait to go back and try more of their diverse and unique menu. read more

This is a hit or miss restaurant. We have only had questionable service when seated at tables. My recommendation is to grab a seat at the bar, and chat up the bar tenders. They are very kind, accommodating, and skilled. The food is good if you are able to beat the rush. Try this place regardless of opinions. read more

Food was ok. Regular American items like Mac & Cheese , burgers, salads, egg rolls, etc. Different alcoholic beverages, teas, & water. Dessert was a little on the lack. No seasonal item, mainly mud jar but it was tasty. Great space for large parties. Lots of outdoor seating. Tons of free parking . read more

Food was pretty good, large portions. We were there for Sunday brunch. We ordered 2 coffees and were told they were almost out of coffee, not enough French presses. Really surprised to here that! What restaurant doesn't have enough coffee for weekend brunch? Might want to consider getting more French presses and coffee if thats your preferred way of serving coffee. read more

Went to this restaurant with my family, it's a bit far from where we live but very convenient if you live near Apex. Located in downtown Apex, this restaurant has a nice space,m; gender neutral bathrooms, great drink selection, and plenty of food options. Service was fine, it wasn't the best but I've been to worse restaurants. The scratch fries were a hit!! Super delicious, only problem I had is they came out with the food. The BBQ Burger, was nothing to write home about. It was cooked great, but I felt it was lacking considering it came from this restaurant. I would like to see other burger options or a build your own. Went back again and they don't take reservations. Told us to show up an hour early and we did. They then proceeded to sit a party that didn't order for an entire hour because they were waiting for people even though our party was there, ready and waiting for an hour. That includes a toddler and a newborn - they left us there like trash. In short we waited for an hour in the hot sun while they sat other people who were waiting on others before ordering. Apparently their seating policy doesn't apply to that party, just ours. Screw this place and their "policies" with their clueless manager and staff. Completely ruined my cousin's birthday. read more

Not sure what happened with foodservice and wait time here. We came on a Sunday night to ask for a table for two around 6:30 and got seated one hour later. Ordered cast iron chicken and a Buddha bowl. The food arrived another hour later cold and not prepared as ordered. Management was very kind to discount our check and we hope that kitchen staff will improve as freshly made food is expected at any scratch kitchens. read more

I was skeptical about trying Scratch, but I am very glad I did!! The bowl that I got was so good- I ate every bite! The service was perfect. She could tell I was catching up with friends so she gave us our space but checked in enough with us to make sure we had everything we needed. The pacing of the meal was perfect. The old fashioned was solid. I highly recommend for a casual night out. read more

We heard allot about Scratch from neighbors and friends. We were very satisfied with the quality of the food and service. Even though we had a little wait, they got through the lousy quickly. Highly recommended! Come early because the word is out. read more

The chicken sandwich was pretty good. It has good flavor however the sandwich kind of fell apart after a few bites. Our waitress was kind and they accommodated pets which was a nice bonus! read more
