My husband and I were part of the kitchen/meal crew and stayed in the Gathering House. The kitchen was quite well-stocked and the extra fridge around the corner + extra storage space was much needed. We did have to bring some of our own equipment but we were thoroughly prepared to do so because Gathering Oaks provided all the information about what was available at the retreat center ahead of time. The sound proofing isn't the greatest in the main house for those staying in the ground floor rooms, but that didn't really end up mattering too much since I'm a pretty deep sleeper. Those who wake up more easily from loud noises may not have as easy a time staying in one of the bedrooms in the Gathering House. The facilities are all very well kept and the kids had a great time with the outdoor activities and the fire pit at night. Would definitely consider Gathering Oaks in the future for smaller retreats (about 40-60 people max).

The outside is a little plain but the inside is a vintage dream yet with every modern convenience you need. We happened to call last minute and the owner met us there in 10 minutes and explained the history of the house. She and her husband bought it and restored it back to its original beauty. There's a photo album of everything they did to restore the house and the antiques she purchased for the rooms are stunning. Can't say enough about how cool this house is!

We totally lucked out and felt like we won the Lottery when we walked in. The proprietor met us on the little road heading down (while she was feeding the chickens, with a longhorn standing ominously behind her). Then - a huge fireplace with burning logs to welcome us in. We arrived late afternoon and just took a brief walk around the grounds on a few of the many trails. The Prayer chapel has a custom made cross with a stained glass dragonfly. The serenity of the scenic landscape is really something. This would be a perfect getaway for a group or spiritual retreat. Truly an amazing feeling - like you've just come home! Can't wait to return when the seasons change.

We have stayed in agglomeration cabins and rental homes over the years and really appreciate those that go above and beyond- these did not. Having a list of things to do around the city, which is very small, would have been nice. Or the option of renting a fishing pole, maybe even a loaner that were could check out for the day would have been nice. We are not fishing people, we have never been so offering that would be nice. The is a place to have a fire bur no wood, again it would be nice if that was something included. Overall, the cabin was just that- a place to stay to sleep. Not much else in regards to activities. If I were to make a suggestion: 1. Have fishing rods (cheap, crappy ones) that guests could borrow 2. List of family fun activities close by 3. List of good places to eat 4. The hosts are very gracious and excellent at taking care of their guests. Everyday started with a delicious made to order breakfast. You could pick from pancakes, Belgian waffles or awesome biscuits. You could also select your eggs. Every meal included bacon or sausage and fruit. It was a great start to our day. I highly recommend staying here! They have many repeat customers and there is a reason, it is simply an outstanding place. In a day when everyone is focused on making a buck, these folks are focused on taking care of their guests and making every stay a very memorable experience. You get a real sense of home away from home. The rooms are very comfortable and they even have California King beds and for a guy who is 6'9" tall it was exquisite. They define the word hospitality. He was very knowledgeable and friendly and accommodating! It was good to go on an animal safari where we felt the animals were happy, well cared for and well fed. This was the best chicken fried steak we've ever had and we're Texans so we've eaten a lot of chicken fried steak in our lives. Be sure to check the time and days the restaurant is open. I wish I had asked the name of the chef! Two things we wish could've been a little better: 1. We went in July and it was HOT and the wagons don't have a place to be together as a group out of the heat. We went to the upstairs of the main buildings. We were asked to leave because they were going to have a meeting in the upstairs room, so we were told we could go downstairs. Then the ACs needed attention and we were asked to go somewhere else, maybe the saloon/restaurant. This was 4pm and the Saloon had just opened. We just needed a place in the shade with AC to play board/card games. This led to problem 2: the waitress. The waitress on 7/25/26 between 4-7pm (possibly BrigaL) told us we were just taking up space and unless we ordered something we needed to leave (there were NO other customers in there at this point). So we decided to order an early dinner for our entire party. Once we were ready to order, the waitress never approached us. We walked up to her and told her we were ready to order. She replied, "I was waiting on you.". Then, while we ordered, we received multiple eye rolls, frustrated sighs , and obvious unhappiness with us. While this could've been overlooked, we were given our bill at the end without a receipt. My husband did quick math and noticed it was almost $20 over what we had ordered. When we asked about it, she frustratedly told us that was for the water. For our family of six, she charged us $3/person for cups of water! She took our bill and after maybe 5-10 minutes brought it back with the water price taken off and the little pay-at-the-table box. She looked directly over my husband's shoulder, almost touching him, staring at the screen while he chose his tip amount. It was EXTREMELY awkward, uncomfortable, and unprofessional! The whole experience with her was so poor, we knew we could not handle eating another meal there in case she was the only server. ( It seemed to be there was only one server per night. The server on our first night, 7/24, was great! ). Overlooking that very uncomfortable evening at the restaurant (the food was still amazing and incredible), we had a great time! We just wish there was a cool area for families to hang out in the middle of the summer. We did swim while we were there, but we needed another place to play games and just be together as a family.
