Sea By Thai used to be one of the Thai restaurants we would frequent. It had gone down in quality over the past few years. We were not impressed and wanted to give it another shot after our last visit a year or so ago, but it has not improved much in my opinion. I will commend them on their prices, we got 3 entrees and the total was about $50. The service was subpar and the indoor space was spacious, although there were not many people dining in. I recommend ordering takeout or delivery if you are looking for fast Thai. read more

Great Thai food at the area. Nice and clean inside. Many tables, booths and a bar. Street parking. I got Four of us (Chicken, shrimp, squid, mussels, onion, scallion, egg, and curry sauce). A little spicy but very flavorful. Fresh ingredients. Perfect with white rice. Chicken and shrimp with glass noodle was great as well. A little dry and under seasoned for me. Thai ice tea was really sweet and in a small glass. The staff were nice. Bathroom was clean. Food flavors and options are great. Overall I would recommend if you are craving Thai food. read more

We came here around 2 pm to grab lunch. There were street parkings available in front of the restaurant. It appeared they had renovated recently, as the interior looked really nice and new. But the floor was little off putting. It wasn't too busy, we got a table right way. The menu had plenty of popular and well known Thai dishes. We ordered the Four of Us, Zaab Noodles (thin cellophane noodles) and Thai Iced tea. Before we could even turn our heads, they brought the dishes out. I noticed not just for us, they did it for other tables too. That was some crazy fast kitchen service. The iced tea was decent. But both the entree dishes were outstanding. The Four of Us had such delicious flavor. The curry sauce was sooo good, I mixed it with the thin noodles in my Saab noodles dish. The Zaab was also excellent. Loved the soft glass noodles. The chicken, shrimp, eggs and all other ingredients in both dishes were really well cooked. The service was friendly overall. The prices of the entree dishes were under $20. Overall this was a solid spot serving really tasty Thai dishes. Just need to improve on the vibe and modernize restrooms. read more

The food at Sea by Thai rivals my go to RVA Thai food spots (think Mom's Siam, Thai Flavor, My Noodle & Bar, and the like) in serving size, quality, and price. I ordered the Kee Mao Goong-Gai (aka Drunken Noodles). It was delicious and came with both chicken and shrimp included. I also tried their pineapple fried rice which was seasoned amazingly, as well as the Iron Squid. Truly not a bad thing on the table. I highly recommend and can definitely see myself returning soon to try more dishes off their secret menu! read more

This is my second time here. I was craving some noodles and this restaurant was in walking distance from my hotel. I used the website to place my order and ordered the chicken gyoza's and Pad Thai made with spaghetti noodles. The walk from Aloft hotels was around 5 mins or so and my food was ready when I arrived. The restaurant was pretty empty for dine in, but there is an option to dine in. I really enjoyed the decor, but the restaurant does seem more available for take out. I came to your establishment primarily because of the positive reviews, and I had hoped for a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. The food was excessively salty, which made it difficult to enjoy. Additionally, our group consisted of five people, including two young children under ten, yet we were seated at a very small table meant for four. To make matters worse, our server recorded us as a party of six and automatically added an 18% gratuity. I do understand that some restaurants apply an automatic service charge for larger groups, but this was the first time I encountered it without any prior notice. At the end of the meal, we were handed another receipt that already included the gratuity from the first bill, alongside a blank line asking for an additional tip. This felt rather confusing and, frankly, inappropriate. I checked your menu afterward and saw that the policy clearly states it applies to parties of six or more. Not only was our group size misrepresented, but we were also effectively asked to pay twice without any explanation that the gratuity had already been added. Visited Sea by Thai with a friend when on business in Richmond. When I first arrived (right after 5) they were empty, but the dining room got busier as the night went on. They also do an almost constant stream of take out orders. They play lounge type music which was somewhat incongruous with Thai food - but I like it! We shared 3 dishes that were all yummy: Chive cake appetizer (10.95) - interesting crispy outside with juicy inside and delicious sauce - served in a glass container Pad Thai Jae - pretty standard Seafood fried rice - with just 1 pepper (spice) and a good thing because it was still spicy and very, very tasty. I have dined in here once and have ordered twice togo! The Drunken Noodle I ordered when I dined in was my Overall favorite for sure! The lettuce wraps would come in 2nd and the Pad Tai pulling up the rear. I don't get a completely inviting feeling when I was dining there. Mostly in part to the odd setup of restaurant and bland color usage. I'm an extremely observant person so I'm definitely a hard critic in terms of decorating and aesthetics! Came here on a Wednesday night and ordered the pad Thai ($14) and Pad see ew chicken ($14). Service was slow and lacked a bit. After about 20 minutes the food came your. Pad Thai was a little too sweet and sticky for my liking(forgot to add spice). The pad sew however was fantastic. It had the right amount of sweetness and savoriness in the noodle. Both were good generous portions enough to take home. They serve it family style so be ready to share and try other dishes. Overall a solid Thai place with good food and value! Came for a late lunch on a Saturday. Was a little worried that there was no one in the restaurant but it was an off time around 3 pm. Service: When we walked in, I was on the phone and the guy overheard me saying I didn't have paper to write something down and he offered to get me a pen and paper. He was so nice and accommodating but told him it was ok. Our server was very attentive, always checked on us to make sure we were ok, food came out quickly and gave suggestion. Food: we started with the chicken satay. Different from what we're used to but good, chicken was a tad bit dry. Entree we got the pineapple fried rice and beef pad see ew. The fried rice was my favorite fried rice! Had a hint of curry powder in it and so flavorful. The pad see ew was good but nothing special. The entree portions were very big! Could feed two people. Got mango sticky rice for dessert, very good and flavorful but could've used more rice. Drinks: we for the Thai mojito and hard Thai tea. They were both good but the mojito was different and so good! I really enjoyed dinning at Sea By Thai. My friends highly recommended it and I certainly see why. The restaurant itself really is committed to the sea theme, with numerous decorations and designs on their dinning ware. It's all done in a very fun yet classy way. I ordered the Pad Pak Jae. It was delicious and so flavorful. My friends opted for the Pad Thai and loved it. Additionally the food was priced super well, especially considering the quality and quantity. Talk about solid takeout - this was BANGING. We got "Sea by Thai" on our second ever visit to Richmond in anticipation of our move to the city in late March/early April and found this off a random google search for some of the most reliable Thai food in the city. This place got so many hits and I can certainly understand why! My partner LOVED the green curry - perfectly textured tofu and a subtle yet unbelievably savory taste. As for the Shrimp Pad See Eaw, it was some of the best Pad See Eaw I've ever had!! Shrimp was perfectly grilled and those thick noodles are to die for. They also have a secret menu that really looks like their specialty dishes and might as well be on the first page instead if they are the highlights of the menu - I was confused why mango puree was used for the mango martini but couldn't be added to the mojito And FYIs - their spicy levels are serious lol. Even 1 pepper has a little kick to it - Atmosphere is like modern casual. Indoor seating is quite spacious and nice. Covid conscious seating w/ booths and tables next to window. The interior design is clean and pleasant. Can't miss this restaurant since it's right next by the road. Order Pad Thai combo with extra noodles here. Pad Thai here wasn't bad at all. Pad Thai here wasn't too saucy or dry, almost "sticky" but not really. I enjoyed it a lot. Calamari here come in larger pieces than the smaller kinds you might see in other restaurants. The calamari itself was soft and "bite-sized," but the fried layer was soft in some parts and hard/concentrated in other parts of the same piece. A bit bland in general. Shrimp tempura was really good! Wow, did not expect it at all, it's extremely soft and chewy. The fried layer and the shrimp itself meshed into this uniform medium that was extremely soft and tender. Tried this place since it was close to home and also based on reviews. That was a mistake! We decided to grab lunch on a weekday, since the booths were not available we were seated at a table. After we ordered our meals I had the opportunity to look around. We were the only patrons there yet tables were not cleared or cleaned. The meal came and was flavorful with the exception of an order or Pad Thia. It was extremely sweet, noodles were overcooked and it lacked flavor. My wife later informed me that she caught a glimpse of the kitchen while exiting the restroom and was surprised by the condition of the kitchen since meat was lying around uncovered. I always judge my food by my favorites and for Thai, it's Chicken Satay and Penang Curry with chicken. The restaurant is very in assuming and it was a good sized location. This day, it wasn't that busy, but hey good for me. Service was pretty good. In terms of the food, the ChIcken Satay was a little overdone. Also the sauce could have been a little sweeter. This was just okay to me. Picked Sea by Thai for lunch after reading many positive reviews. I am a fan of Thai food so was looking forward to it. The decor: while it is bright, the restaurant is a little run down. Went to the restroom and there was something coming out of the ceiling, the baseboards were peeling and the light switch and wall had dirt all over it like someone did yard work then came in to wash their hands. The food was meh. We got the iron squid, which was great. The Tom Yum Soup was good but too sweet for me. The shrimp wonton soup tasted like a tin can. The green curry was super sweet, like a custard. The noodles were one note. I've seen reviews touting the service but I found it to be slow. I had to ask for a glass for my beer a few times, and our server disappeared for big stretches of time. There were only 5 tables in the place. Oh, and I asked about the crispy flounder and was told it was $50. too much for lunch and without knowing how it is. I won't be back. Definitely not on my list. read more

I've ordered here several times in the past few years. My first visit to this restaurant was back when they were located in short pump mall. The food is consistently good and friendly for take out orders. On my most recent visit I ordered a wonton soup, which was very bland. I was surprised when I bit into a wonton that it had an entire shrimp inside, that was a nice surprise. Spring rolls had a nice crunch and the sweet and sour sauce on the side was a great complement. I would say the filling for the spring rolls was a bit too mushy though. The fried rice was delicious. It's a bit of a basic thing to order but I love it. I've tried the pad Thai, pad see ew, and chicken satay which have all been delicious. Overall, I definitely think this is the best Thai in the short pump area. read more

I got chicken as my protein, and it was tender, juicy, and moist. The veggies in the bowl was fresh. I literally dumped the entire bowl of rice into the curry, and enjoyed every bite of it. I love it. - Drunken Spaghetti [GET]: My cousin got the spaghetti dish with minced chicken, shrimp, pepper and onion in a chili and basil based sauce. There's a decent amount of protein and the noodles were cooked just right. It is quite spicy though, so if you cannot handle spicy food, then this is not the dish for you. The only downfall was that it's too oily, made it a little hard to finish the entire plate and heavy. - Chef's Secret Menu [GET]: My siblings both got the cellphone noodles dish stir fry with shrimp and squid with egg, carrots, onions, and scallions. Seafood was great, frest, and pretty good size too. The noodles are cooked perfectly, and the scramble eggs added a good toasty flavor to the dish. The only downside was that it was a bit bland, so a pinch of salt and pepper will make a big difference. I would say if you like seafood and cellphone noodles, then give this dish a try. Ambiance: 4.25/5 - Sea By Thai is located in the same shopping center as Whole Foods. The interior seating is nice, clean, bright, and spacious. There's cute circular booths and interesting hanging light bulbs as decor. They also got a full cocktail bar too in the center of the restaurant. The restaurant is not loud, so a perfect place for a date. Price: 4/5 - Pretty average prices across the menu compared to all the Thai places in RVA. All dishes ranges from $15 to $25 depending on what you order. The portion is great and large, and we definitely feel full after our meal, so I think it is worth it. Service: 4/5 - The service is great and staffs are friendly. The host seated us as soon as we sat down, and our staff brought us water. They are prompt at taking orders and the food came out fairly quick. The only thing I will say is service is a tad slow, took them a while to come by to take our orders and get our credit cards, but understandable due to COVID. BLUF: Sea By Thai has the tastiest Panang Curry I have tried. If you are a Thai curry lover, I 100% would recommend this place. Sea by Thai has become my go to for Thai food. Due to Covid, I have only done takeout but I can tell you that my experience with staff has consistently been very friendly. The food is really good! They include shrimp and chicken in their standard Pad Thai which is unique and I think good. Other dishes are similar - shrimp included as a standard- but you can always order without if it's not for you. Green curry is great. I recommend the lettuce wrap appetizer! Spices are on point and of course you can adjust spicy heat using 1-3 scale with 3 being truly hot- it is Thai after all. What I really like is that they provide a lot of meat and vegetables- not just sauce- and portions are healthy sizes. Parking here can be a challenge. Might try the garage facing Broad if there are no curb spots left. Many people double park if running in to pick up an order. Definitely worth a try if you are considering a Thai restaurant. Might just become one of your favorites too. read more
