This Elephant Thai seems to be mainly take out, although they have tons of seating. We arrived on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was completely empty. We stood around for a few minutes with no one in sight while waiting to be greeted. Once we were seated everything was good. Their festive decorations were a nice surprise. We tried Thai tea, Chang Thai beer, drunken noodles, and pad kapow. The drinks weren't our favorite but the entrees were pretty tasty. This was really good. The Drunken Noodles were packed with flavor, perfectly spicy, and cooked just right -- bold without being heavy. The Mango Sticky Rice was a standout as well: fresh mango, warm sticky rice, and just the right sweetness to balance the meal. Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. I love coming to Elephant Thai. It's a great spot for takeout or for dining in. The wait time can take a little, but the food is tasty so it's worth the wait. Elephant Thai is conveniently located on Broad St. They do offer a lunch buffet and menu. They have a parking lot behind it so it's easy to drive here. I got take out for dinner last night. The last time I came was with a friend for dining in. I can't remember the name of my dish then, but I think it was some duck lover's noodle curry dish. It was incredible and so tasty. My friend at the time got some noodle dish that was too spicy for her at a level 1. Do note: if the dish is traditionally spicy, it may be hard to lower the spice level. Last night my friend and I called in to order pad thai, massaman curry, and pad see ew. We waited at the bar until our order was ready and then paid at the front. We were all happy with our meals. I somehow found this place as a recommendation from Reddit. I can't find the post anymore, so now I'm questioning whether it was just a fever dream. $14 for lunch buffet is pretty good value. We didn't get food poisoning, so that's a plus. Half of the food available was pretty bad, though. There was some grilled pork that was especially bad. The noodles were all safe and fine. The fried wontons were pretty dry and gross. There was barely any filling inside, either. The lemonade was very watered down. The tom yum soup... I'm pretty sure I can make better. We were there for ~45 minutes and many of the dishes sat there empty the whole time. Never once did they refill them. There was a decent amount of people in the restaurant, so it's definitely not because the lunch rush was over. Sadly, I didn't get to try all of the dishes. I guess that could be a blessing in disguise, though. I don't think I would pay $14 to have this again. Maybe $5. You have got to be pretty desperate to eat here. The ok: the food was okay. you'll find classic Thai staples like drunken noodles and pad thai, tom yum soup and some stir fried/grilled pork and chicken. The bad: The buffet food didnt seem fresh and it's been sitting out for a while- every container was nearly empty and we were left trying to get the last bits. It was strange though, because we overheard the server telling another customer that "they have plenty more, just let them know if they want anything!" Then why weren't the dishes being refilled....? My partner and I were looking for an after-movie dinner spot. We elected to try Elephant Thai as it is open until 10pm on weeknights. We were greeted and seated right away. Our visit was shortly before Christmas and the restaurant was decorated for the season. We were pleasantly surprised to be treated as if we arrived during regular dinner service. The wait staff was both friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We limited our meal to entrees due to the time. Both my partner's Pad Kow and my Pad See Ew were excellent and spiced at our declared heat limit. We were tempted to order Mango with Sticky Rice as a dessert but, given the hour we decided we would have it on our next visit. We look forward to returning to this Richmond gem. read more

I have eaten the lunch buffet here so many times I've lost count. They have some of the best Thai food in Richmond, VA. My only complaint is the to-go containers seem to be getter smaller and smaller. I believe customers getting their food to-go shouldn't have to pay the same $16 as customers who dine in. The current to-go box is so small I couldn't get any cold buffet items because they would mix with my hot food items. Please consider going back to the four compartment containers. read more

I would not recommend this restaurant. Portions were smallish, beef was exquisitely chewy. Sauces were either watery or gelatinous. Waitstaff service/attention was subpar. They forgot to bring our other entree, even after reminding them, until everything else was nearly finished. Of particular annoyance is the family's young child, who is apparently a regular in the evenings. This time she had a lengthy and exceptionally loud temper tantrum. The pad see ew is so unbelievably good. I completely demolished it within like 10 seconds, that's why there's no photo. The basil fried rice was also pretty good as well. I love the atmosphere and decor in this fine establishment! Not only is it beautifully decorated inside, they have an outdoor patio for those that enjoy that option! We dined in so we enjoyed some complimentary rice crackers they melt in your mouth and are slightly salty. For an appetizer we had an order of curry puffs, these were 2 flavor bombs, you only get 2 but they are freshly fried. The Thai crispy chicken is coated in a Tamarind sauce which is sweet and a little tangy but the chicken was juicy and a light crisp but delicious. The drunken noodles with beef were pretty good, it has an assortment of bell peppers and it was a touch spicy but you can request it be more spicy but mine was a level 2 and it was just enough for me. I want to preface this by saying I have never ever felt strongly enough to leave a review anywhere. My sister and I started our meal with a thai tea which was both affordable and delicious. It only went down from here. We chose the buffet and tried a little bit of everything. All of their noodles were good, not outstanding. The gyoza was fried tofu. Their crab rangoon was simply a piece of krab wrapped up in a fried wonton. Their sushi was fishy, mushy, and somehow almost tasted like cream cheese even though there wasn't any in the rolls. Do not try the sushi. Their chicken tom yum was tasty but our chicken was neon pink? And not an undercooked shade of pink, it was fully cooked and pepto bismol pink. My mom and I dined in for lunch yesterday. The restaurant has a cute patio out front but it was a little too warm for outside seating. The interior is well decorated and clean. They had a lunch buffet where the staff plate your food for $12.99. My mom went for that option. I ordered the chicken basil dish ($12.49). There is no lunch menu so not sure if the portions change or stay the same for dinner. Was disappointed at the portion size for the price - but only bc I'm used to going to a different Thai spot down Broad. The buffet had a lot of options and earned a good review from my dining buddy. The staff were very friendly/helpful and made sure to keep our water glasses full as some dishes were pretty spicy. We were craving Thai and orginally planned to go next door to Yaya's Cookbook (I know, two Thai places next door to each other is rough), but the wait was too long, so we ended up here. Unfortunately, there is a reason why folks are willing to wait for Yaya's instead of coming here. We were the only ones in the restaurant, but the kitchen was busy with takeout and delivery orders. It took us a while to order, which was frustrating because we were the only people there, but understandable because there were only two people working up front dealing with the take out chaos. Before I get to the food, there is one slightly strange thing to note...the food and utensils were both disposable. We ordered DoorDash from Elephant Thai tonight due to the reviews on DoorDash! I got a mixed vegetable pad Thai and a Thai iced tea. Food arrived quickly and hot. This pad Thai was good! It had a healthy serving of vegetables mixed in, the noodles hadn't all congealed together as I've had from other take away places, and a there was a healthy spread of ground peanuts. I enjoyed the vegetable variety of baby corn, celery, broccoli, carrots, and cabbage. The veggies were still crunchy and cooked perfectly and mixed well with the rice noodles. Noodles were a bit thinner than I've gotten from other restaurants but these were cooked to an excellent consistency! My only wish is that there had been an option to control the spice level. This was very mild and I like my food a little spicier. Though, they did include packets of ground Thai chili in our take away.
