After a day at King's Dominion Amusement Park, we had a 3-hour drive back to Cary, NC. But, before we could journey back home, we had to get something to eat and we decided on Thai food. We picked the first place called "Ban Thai Restaurant". We put the address in the GPS headed there. When we got there it was closed (disappointment). We reverted to Google and found Thai Gourmet Restaurant. This time we called to find out if they were open and they were. The pictures of the food on their website looked so delicious. When we got to Thai Gourmet, we were greeted by the amazing hostess. The first impression was delicious because the restaurant was filled with the amazing aroma of Thai spices. We knew we were going to be in for a Thai treat. The biggest test for any Thai restaurant are beef salad, papaya salad and Pad Thai. Thai Gourmet did not disappointment. The flavors were spot on and authentic. It was so delicious that my oldest daughter did her happy dance when she tried the food. She knows because she spent some time in Thailand. I wish I can mind-meld you the deliciousness of Thai Gourmet but technology has not gotten there yet. So, you just have to visit Thai Gourmet Restaurant and experience it for yourself. The food is authentic and delicious. We have added this as a favorite on our GPS. Every time we pass through Ashland. We are making a restaurant stop just to eat at Thai Gourmet. Make the trip. This restaurant is located in a small strip mall, Parking can be limited. We were seated upon entering not many customers understanding we arrived early at opening. We were greeted and given time to check out the menu. We ordered our food and it arrived promptly and hot. The waitress was very polite and friendly making our visit nice. Our food arrived and it looked delicious my only issue was the General Tso dish was very wet not much glaze on the chicken a little disappointing. Overall everything was good. It's basically a strip mall location with limited seating, with nice decor. Service was quick along food arrival. Menu has plenty of Thai Favorites and we had our favorites which met our expectations. Ordered the mild but should had ordered the spicy however still had enough spice. Not sure why Thai Gourmet only has 3.5 stars, because this place is on point! It's a small family owned restaurant. The flavors were spot on and authentically delicious. The service was fast and friendly. As with most legit Thai restaurants, the spice level is no joke! So be careful when ordering, because I love spice but level 3 was almost too spicy for me. Food tastes great but overpriced. I ordered takeout and paid $4 for a side of white rice. The container was 1/2 full and maybe 3/4c of rice. Super disappointed in serving size on that. Plus our crab Rangoon dipping sauce was a drop in the bucket compared to what we should have received. read more

I reviewed Thai Gourmet years ago when owned by another family. Had several bad experiences so stopped going. Recently friends recommended it as it is under new ownership. Been 3 times and so much better. Would have given 5 stars but last visit with another couple wasnt up to par. Our friend's dish had dried looking chicken and very little of it. When she said something the lady didn't seem to care. No offer to make it right. My husband and I will go back but my friends will not. I've ordered from this restaurant several times, and the food is always delivered hot, fresh and perfectly prepared/packaged. The drunken noodles are very good, the spice levels are customizable and it is actually spicy. The pad thai was also delicious, they give good portions of protein in each dish. The garden rolls are delicious, along with the chicken satay. They both come with peanut sauce and it is also very good. I've only tried the mango and sticky rice dessert, they use ripe mangos and the sweetness of the coconut milk pairs well with the tartness/sweetness of the mango. Again, good portions. It has been about a year since I had been to Thai Gourmet as we used to be frequent guests but we could not get over his style of customer service. The owner is absolutely so rude that as soon as our family walked in, I quickly remembered why we stopped going. He does not care to gain more customers which is evident in the way he acts towards the ones he has. The food is good but the way he treats the few staff and the customers, I have no idea why anyone would work for him. He made a mistake on the order - HE MADE THE MISTAKE.... my daughter would never order shrimp and he was said I ASKED YOU. What?! No you didn't. I just can't even say enough about how insulting and horrible this guy is and a few years back I would tell everyone about this place. He is now charging 20% extra if you eat in. He said there were signs all over the place and I wish I had taken a picture because the sign did not make any sense. At one point he also wanted to charge people for using his bathroom that weren't customers. (rolling eyes). I would 100% tip 20% if he were customer focused or the least bit nice to anyone who walks through his doors. He has been in business a long time and as much as I used to like the food, I will never ever ever give him any more of my business. It is time for this man to retire. He has not patience for anyone. Had the drunken noodles and lemongrass chicken. Thai spice runs a bit hotter than Chinese, which we are comfortable, so we chose spice level 2. We also had the calamari appetizer. On the phone ordering during this COVID epidemic, super easy and the transaction upon receiving the food was very clean and cautious of keeping things sanitary. Food was ready in less than 15 minutes and the staff were friendly to communicate with as well. Fresh Spring Rolls: big portions, great flavor, no complaints Pad Csee Ew: tasty however could have used more sauce or flavor but that could just be a personal preference. As soon as we walked in, the employee rudely said "Ma'am, do not sit, I have a lot of orders and cannot take any more customers". Regrettably the worst Thai food I ever had. I have nothing good to say about the food or I'd add it to this review. Perhaps that says all you need to know.. The papaya salad was watery and bland with zero heat after requesting med-hot spice. The pad-thai was bland, overcooked and crunchy (the noodles not peanuts) in some bites and disgustingly tasted like seafood despite having chicken added to it. The massaman curry was watery, bland and the side of rice that accompanied it had a slight taste of bleach. I really wanted this to be good since it's the closest Thai food location to me but I ended up throwing away more than half of it because I just couldn't stomach eating it. The curry has a coconut base and is quite sweet. The vegetables tasted very fresh and weren't overcooked like they often can be in curries. 2. Fresh spring roll appetizer I was hoping that these would be brought out early, but they came out with the entrees. Everything was very bland which would have been better with a nice dipping sauce but the dipping sauce wasn't very good and there wasn't enough of it. Once I started eating, I noticed that there were a few shreds of carrot that were grey so I ended up not finishing the rest of my roll. In general, I liked that Thai Gourmet offered something different compared to the usual food options in the area. The food was decent. I would probably visit again if in the area but I might order something different.
