We are SO thankful to find a Chinese place since we moved South of the River. Our go to in the Fan was China Panda, and it's so important to us to find a place that has decent options, especially ones with vegetarian dishes. We splurged and ordered vegetable + bean curd soup, general tso's tofu with fried rice, orange chicken with fried rice, and the donuts (because what the hell). I had been craving a broth-y soup for a while now and was pleased to find that this did the trick. It wasn't super flavorful, but light enough to hit the spot. I will say that some of the veggies didn't seem SUPER fresh, with a brown spot on a baby corn or water chestnut. However, the size of the soup and variety of veggies and tofu was great. The general tso's tofu was SO good and spicy! I am a big fan of spicy, and this dish at Chinese places is normally just overly sweet. It was great. Also, the fried rice has really good flavor. My husband said his orange chicken was good! Not anything *amazing*, but that's to be expected with your regular ole' Chinese place. We'll be back. read more

Long time customer, since they opened. One of their first customers. I liked the place better when they had Gold Coin ( fried eggplant ) and the fried Chicken Wings had curry seasoning. No longer the case for either item. In those days, I usually ordered carryout or delivery two or three times per month, or more. They stopped delivering recently, since about the start of covid. They've changed their menu a few times over the past 12 years, and not really for the better. I wish they would return to the menu they had 15 to 20 years ago. Not quite the same friendly place. Certainly not the same as when they had local delivery, and menu items not usually available at other asian restaurants. These days, Cathay Gourmet is pretty much just typical chinese restaurant fare ala americain. Seems like mostly just out of the box menu items, identical to most any other place, and carried by the same food distributor. This restaurant used to be my go to. I ordered some food for pickup with my wife, went to get the food, and returned home. Once I opened my container of "Mongolian Beef", I found that it was more like Mongolian Onions and Peppers. This meal was onions and peppers in a sauce with little scattered bits of beef. This totally ruined my meal that night. After calling to explain my frustration, the person I spoke to asked if he could simply credit me the spring rolls and do better next time. Obviously there would not be a next time, so I told them I would like a different dish and would be there to pick it up. Luckily they did provide the replacement dish, but my family was finished eating by the time I returned home. I do not understand how this could even happen, but I had to tell the yelp world. I haven't dined in since high school but have also never gotten taken out or delivery from any other Chinese place in south side since! The portions are huge and I've never had anything less than fresh. The customer service is on point, not sure how anyone can say it's not! My guilty pleasures are sesame chicken (big pieces served with ample sauce and broccoli) and the vegetable lo mein. We always get free crab rangoon with our order and it's also a household fave. Each meal is enough for two people to split comfortably and they reheat well for next day lunches. Don't let the exterior fool you (small kinda dingy) this place is where it's at! read more

My family got take out from Cathay Gourmet last night. Cathay has been a Bon Air staple since I was a child. Although it isn't much to look at from the outside (and I probably wouldn't ever "dine in"), the food makes or breaks this place. We got quite a feast and I got to try everything so I'll comment on everything. Steamed Dumplings - big dumplings with a thick outside surrounding plenty of delicious pork filling. The dipping sauce was perfect. Sour with a touch of lingering sweetness Egg Drop Soup - better than your run of the mill egg drop. Thicker with deeper flavor. Sesame Chicken - Typically my favorite dish for take out, I was left wanting for more sauce. I love mixing the sauce in with my rice and I couldn't really do that this time. Also it wasn't really as spicy as I am used to (looking back at the menu, I see that it does not have a chili next to it, so I probably should have seen that coming.) Pork Lo Mein - Plenty of shredded pork and good seasoning on the noodles. Beef with Broccoli - Fresh broccoli florets and bits of beef with plenty of brown sauce to spoon over rice. Chicken with Cashews - Fairly bland. I wanted more cashews and their saltiness to make the dish more excited. The carrots, celery, and chicken were definitely all coated in sauce but even the sauce lacked some flavor. The servings were good and we finished up the leftovers today for lunch. Nothing about Cathay Gourmet really stood out as really good or really bad. I wouldn't expect more than you typical Chinese take out. read more

Tonight my wife and I went on an expedition in to possibly the deepest and most unexpectedly ridiculous levels of customer service hell we've ever experienced. We ordered our food for delivery, and innocently assumed that our lives would continue down the peaceful, pastoral path that we had imagined for the evening. After about an hour of playing Fallout 3 (see previous sentence,) my wife asked where our food was. I thought that was a fair question, since they said it would take about 35 minutes to deliver. I called to ask about it, and was told that it was on the way, and was thanked for my patience. About twenty minutes later, the food had still not arrived. So, being the vigilant citizen that I am, I decided to wait at my glass front door. This proved to be somewhat beneficial, because I was able to see the delivery driver pull onto my street, pause in front of my house, and then go into reverse - at which point he drove directly into my mailbox. The meeting of car and mailbox was completely unprovoked, and this kind of aggression just will not stand, man. So...an hour and change after ordering, I now have cold food and a smashed mailbox. My wife called to ask for a refund (which I think was, uh, I don't know, pretty fair?) She was told that we should have expected a wait, since we were ordering on a holiday. When she asked what holiday it was, she was told 'Saturday.' Let me pause to wish everyone a Happy Saturday. May all your Saturday wishes come true. The rest of the conversation was kind of a blur. We were told that they could bring more food since this order was cold. Given the way the first order went, and the fact that my wife is eight months pregnant, the idea that the next order might not arrive until 10:30 at night was not going to fly. Long story short (well, not really,) we were finally told that we would get a refund, but only after Wifey was told that 'they've never had a customer like her before.' Uh...a customer who likes hot food in a timely manner, and without a broken mailbox? So yeah. That was our experience. I think next time we'll order pizza. read more

By far the best Chinese delivery in the Bon Air area for the price. I have tried them all. Generous meat/Seafood portions. My main draw here is the Use of fresh large shrimp in most seafood dishes vs the teeny shrimp at most take out places. Free extras! Based on your total order they will throw in fried wontons, or extra General Tso Chicken. Menu items we love here are Mango Shrimp (huge shrimp), Curry Shrimp, Excellent Crab Rangoons, Beef and Scallops with Oyster Sauce, all Lo Miens, Hunan Shrimp, General Tso Chicken. We have ordered here for the past 5 years religiously. We have tried other take outs just to be disappointed always come back to Cathay Gourmet. I just wish their online ordering form worked for when I am really lazy and don't feel like talking on the phone. One reason I've tried others was because of online ordering availability. Pleasantly surprised! I have lived in Bon Air for 12 years and am ashamed to say I completely judged a book by its cover and never tried this restaurant. Then at the recommendation of the lovely folks at Bon Air Title we did! Wow! The inside is pretty much what you would expect, based on the before mentioned judge a book reference. The service, was not exactly warm and fuzzy, but who cares? However the food was GREAT! I got the beef and broccoli which was one of the best I have had, and quite honestly my Chinese food test. The egg rolls are wonderful and the fried rice was fantastic. Salty much like every other Chinese food restaurant ...this all coming from some one that had completely sworn off Chinese food because we couldn't even find something mediocre. I love Thai and Vietnamese ...always a first choice, but I noticed their special for that day were some Thai dishes!. Bottom line I was beyond surprised. Will absolutely go there again! The prices were very reasonable and it speaks well of the restaurant if after 12 yrs of my living in the area they are still in business. Go check them out! read more

This is our go to Chinese take out restaurant. They have consistent food so your Generals chicken or sweet and sour chicken or teriyaki chicken will taste the same on every order from month to month. We think they serve very good food and have good prices and you tend to get your food within 20-25 minutes of ordering. read more

Terrible, awful crap. I would rather like pavement. This place is the prime example why south side has no taste... Its sheer crap but yet people like it. Over salted or bland there is no middle road here... On top of that, I live les than 2 minutes away, always quoted 45 minute delivery, and more than an hour later luke warm crap arrives at my door... This review is somewhat bitter sweet because of the pros and cons that are associated with eating at this restaurant. Without further delay, here is the review. The Good: Food- I sometimes go here for a different taste of Chinese Food. They have very decent Teriyaki Chicken, so decent, you forget that its not actually chicken. The fried rice is decent, but has a heavy dose of sodium. The General Tso and Sweet and Sour Chicken are good. The Teryaki chicken is some of the best that I have had in RVA. The Bad: Service- What turns me off about the restaurant is the amount of time it takes them to prepare the food. I could call in a relatively small order, arrive 20 minutes later and the food still not be ready. Just last night, I called in a take out order at 8:00pm, was told that it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrive 25 minutes later and it appeared that the woman who took my order forgot to put it in. It wasnt until 8:45 when I got my food. The restaurant did look somewhat busy, but as I saw the woman apologizing to other customers of a different ethnicity for the time they had to wait, she issued no such apology to me when I got my food. This restaurant is a prime example of unprofessionalism. If you are going to forget my order after I took the time to call it in and drive to pick it up, you do not deserve my money or business. I do not see myself going back to this restaurant ever again. I would gladly drive 10 minutes to Jiang's or some other location for better food and service. ONE STAR. read more

I've been ordering from here for about 12 years. Rarely have they ever taken more than 30 minutes on any given night to get me my food. Also, I've accidentally called after they were closed, but they still answered and brought me their order. The owner is the delivery driver most of the time and his wife is the one that answers the phone. It seems they never take a vacation. I digress. We've tried quite a few different things from there and most is pretty decent and fresh tasting. Our go-to favorites are General Tso's chicken, Sweet & Sour chicken, & beef & broccoli. I always get their egg rolls and spring rolls as well. Love them with the hot mustard. Apparently, the other reviewers just had a random bad experience. They are not a high dollar fine dining place, so rating the food in comparison like that is just stupid. They are much better than fast food and reasonably priced. We get 2-3 meals out of each dinner portion. So when we order 2 with egg & spring rolls it's about $18. Can't beat that, imho. read more

Good place for take out. I wouldn't recommend delivery under staffed and can take a while especially on weekends. It's your standard takeout nothing fancy. read more
