We were craving a beer and to our surprise, it is BYOB, you just need the receipt on the table, so that if an inspector were to come in, they know they didn't sell it. Went for an early dinner on Saturday, it's byob so we had a ton of sangria with us. Had the cod cake go start and it was pretty good. Salad was good too and the waitresses were very nice. I ordered the whole chicken with veggies (meh) and black beans. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the beans were amazingly good. Picnic barbecue ... Man o man! $8 of pure deliciousness. I'm very picky with my rice and Portuguese rice is just not my fav. but besides that everything at this spot was on point. Miss being in Newark for these type of spots. Cheap, big portions, and bangin. Many people pick up and go but they have a decent sit down area for those wanting lunch/dinner. You can tell decor isn't a priority but when you're serving good food, I wouldn't care much either. The servers and staff in the front are all friendly. My supervisor took me out for lunch and we shared the half chicken special, with rice, fries, and a huge salad. I felt like we ate so much but we still had enough to take home. Their original photos are kind of misleading, because it's just as casual as the rest of the barbecue spots around Newark, except they have wine glasses. My mom, boyfriend and I ordered a salad, ribs, chicken rice and fries and then the flan for dessert (huge ass portion). The ribs were good and also gigantic. I liked the ribs and fries better at Ferry House down the street, but liked Picnic's chicken a lot more - it was moist and tasty. They arrived lukewarm, almost cold. No juices, just dry, warm, reheated ribs. This meal was depressing. The Portuguese sausage was good, but also warm. This restaurant used to be a 5-star for me and an ace-in-the-hole for Newark. It was my first meal in Newark when I moved there and I was hooked from the first bite. We would eat there twice a month during my time in Newark. However, my last experience there left a sour-taste in my mouth, which was the 1st time I ate there after their remodel and change in personnel. It has a cozy, family-style feel to it, always busy, and the food is the shining star of this place. However, the new personnel has ruined the vibe for me. My wife and I used to love the friendly, hard-working female servers and the cleanliness of the restaurant. None of the employees work there anymore and I worry about contamination of the food with the piled high dirty dishes and leftover food on the counter near where they assemble the plates in the front of the restaurant. Also, the new employees barely speak any English and it was difficult to communicate with them and they messed up my order twice during my last visit. Additionally, the food used to come out fairly quickly but it took almost 40 minutes to get my order, granted it was a packed house that evening. The saving grace is the amazing food that still remains there. The moment you walk in, you smell the aroma of the meats cooking over an open fire. There is a large cast iron rack (~6 feet wide) that contains whole chickens that are constantly flipped over the flames and the racks of pork ribs that are cooking over the fire. The portions are massive and the pricing still remains reasonable. I tend to order the 1/2 chicken, 1/2 pork ribs with rice and beans + french fries. The food is served on a plate close to 15-17" wide with the bottom being filled with fries and rice piled high. The meats are assembled on top and the beans come in a pot on the side and are quite tasty. My favorite meat is the ribs which are full of meat on the bone, incredibly juicy and has that nice smoke flavor. The chicken is even better once you combine all the sauces of mayo, hot sauce, and ketchup to create this nice tangy dip. The restaurant itself is bland in terms of decorations and the bathrooms are marginal at best. I may give this place another try if I'm in the area again but I hope this was just a fluke and they were having a bad day. read more

I haven't ordered from here in a couple of years because the last time I did they got my order wrong and the food wasn't that great. It used to be great when they had an older Portuguese lady doing all the cooking. Now it looks like they have non-Portuguese people cooking and it explains why the food isn't that great there anymore. I had gone there yesterday (April 25, 2021) and ordered the mixed picadinho with cubed potatoes. The girl who answered hardly spoke English so I spoke to her in Portuguese and she was not aware that picadinho comes with cubed potatoes. Anyway, after getting a couple people on the phone who finally said "okay will add the cubed potatoes." I was hesitant to order there again since I got not so good food in the last couple of years but my husband insisted we try since their prices were a little cheaper than other good Portuguese restaurants (you get what you pay for). We had a dinner party and all my friends were going to be trying picadinho for the first time and I was so disappointed with the food and embarrassed. First of all, the picadinho had a weird taste. It was very lemony. Who puts lemon in Picadinho?? It had not flavoring except for lemon tasting. They didn't use fresh potatoes. It was leftover potatoes that were soggy. The meat was mushy and hard and lots of fat. I was embarrassed since I bragged to friends how great Picadinho is. We also ordered a side of fried calamari, which was just frozen rings they must have gotten from a store and it had no flavor and was bland and hard. We also ordered a side of shrimp and chorizo that was disgusting and oily. I have to say I was so disappointed. They have all new owners and no actual Portuguese people working there. Nothing against Spanish people but that's the new owners and workers there. I will never order from there again and will definitely not recommend this place. The best food I have had in Newark... EVER... My coworker, boss and I wanted great food and searched grub hub to see if we could find something that is out of the normal disgusting eateries here in downtown Newark. Picnic was on the list and delivered. We called to find out a little bit more about some items on the menu. The gentleman over the phone was amazingly helpful and friendly. We called back a few minutes later and placed the order. We ordered a half order of Chicken with french fries and rice, and a whole order of ribs with french fries and salad. We were quoted a delivery time of 30 minutes. Not bad considering that it was noon. About 20 minutes later, we went downstairs to pick up our food. The chicken was packaged in a foam container and it was pretty heavy to be half of a chicken. The ribs came in a foil pan with rice and salad. The ribs were amazing and I am a very picky eater. The french fries were the best french fries that I have had outside of my grandma's homemade french fries. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. Our entire office lunch only cost us $20.00 and I was more than satisfied with our food. I would so recommend this to even the most skeptic person. You cannot go wrong with this place!!! And you have to specify if you want lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, etc. That's backwards. We got 5 sandwiches with bread and chicken/steak. It was half the size of the picture of the sandwich here on yelp. This has to be one of the best restaurants in Newark--and I say that while ordering delivery. I sampled some of the chicken, ribs, and pork steak and was overall very pleased. The chicken was well-seasoned and juicy despite most of it coming from the breast, while the ribs could have used a little bit more salt but were tender and still delicious. The pork steak was cooked a little more than I would have liked, but the smokey grill flavor was there and it was still good. Each half order comes with a huge portion of rice and fries, and I'm glad we had half orders because the full order would have been disastrous--WAYYY too much food. The fries didn't come out crispy, but this was to be expected with delivery/take out--so no complaints here. Furthermore, the rice was a bit much, so I didn't even eat all of it. A half order entree will set you back around 8 dollars, but Picnic arguably gives you the best value for your money here in Newark. Great flavors and food at an even better price. Since I am a frequent at Ferry St. BBQ I expected Picinic bbqs food to be somewhat similar (they offer the same kind of food). I waited over an hour for extremely stringy dry ribs and a laughable portion of chicken. I ordered a combo and my platter consisted of mainly yellow rice. Why do they waste all of that rice? I also asked for salad instead of fries without onions and guess what I was blessed with??! Extra onions darling! My husband and I go here once a month or so, and we usually are with another couple. This has become kind of "our place" and we never leave dissapointed. We went Thursday evening. Our usual order for four people, and we always go there when we're starving - Picadinho $18 for a full order - we've tried this dish at other restaurants and it's never as good. Pork ribs $16 for a full order - meaty, perfectly seasoned, the right amount of grill taste. Each comes with a side, and we double up on carbs by adding rice and the fantastic hand cut french fries. We add a large salad, a jug of wine (it seems we never finish the magic jug) and it makes a great meal. Not much by way of ambience, but the service is always warm and friendly and it's an opportunity to bust out my broken Portuguese. Nothing but praise for this place! read more

I went on a weekend for their specialty, roast suckling pig, and it did not disappoint -- juicy with a delightfully crispy skin. I also tried the pork and beef ribs which were great as well. I know they're simple side dishes, but the rice and fries were very tasty and I just couldn't leave any behind. I managed to stuff down a nice cold flan for dessert before leaving.
