Update to previous review: They resumed preparing food on premises and have a decent if small selection of fried fish, shrimp, etc., with fries or hush puppies, slaw, and a few other items to choose from. Can get it to go or they have a couple small tables and seats, but it's a fish market, not a restaurant so don't complain about the "ambiance" though am pleased to report it does have a much brighter, cleaner, more pleasant feel since the reopening (which has been a year or so now). The walk-up counter service has been adequately courteous and efficient on my few visits, and since the reopening credit cards have been accepted. read more

This is the only fresh seafood market that I know of in a 30 mile radius worth the time to stop in. They have a variety of fresh fish, crabs, and oysters daily. The shop has everything in it, so you cab buy fish, have it dressed anyway you like, and even have it cooked for you. I've taken to coming in for lunch and having fresh fried fish which takes in some cases less time than a fast food place. The family owned local business has become an extension of my family with their heartfelt conversations and customer service. They are the real reasons why I continue to come here. read more

Shortly after we first moved here ('03) we drove by this ramshackle-looking place and said "That place looks scary. But you know, it probably has the best seafood in town." The first time we went there, we were not impressed--there was nothing fresh (everything was frozen) and I didn't know what half the stuff was... in short, not appealing at all. We left within probably two minutes. But indeed, we kept hearing from all sorts of people that THIS was the place to get seafood, so we gave it another shot...and it was definitely worthwhile! The trick is going right when they get their fresh seafood in--I am sure there is a schedule, and I am sure I asked at one point, but all I can remember is we usually have luck on Saturday mornings. We should go there more, but it just happens to be a place we forget about, because we are so rarely on Bell Fork--and so rarely think about shopping for seafood on a Saturday morning! That said, we usually just get shrimp, scallops, or tuna--and it is always wonderfully fresh and delicious. The staff has always been nice and helpful as well. They don't get 5 stars because of the atmosphere and curb appeal. Yes, I know it's a fish market and doesn't need to be glamorous, but I think if they dressed it up a bit, it would be better (and probably garner more business). Although the building looks a little dilapidated, the seafood inside is fresh and very reasonably priced. we picked up some jumbo shrimp and sea scallops. Came down to my hometown for a birthday fish fry. I was in charge of finding $200 worth of fish. Now mind you I've been from my hometown at least 2o years, visiting occasionally. So I thought let me run down to the local seafood center by my grandmas house. Everything was going well until I encountered the owners. We had $100 worth of fish picked out, and I was still shopping. I inquired about the cost of the remainder of fish I left behind, and do you know the owner looks at me, rolls her eyes, throws her hands in the air and walks off. I'm confused at this point because I'm spending money here. So I ask, is there a problem. In which point she just looks at me from a distance. Her husband then walks to the counter where I am (I assume to take over the order) At this point, in good conscience I can't spend my money, if I can't get respect from the owner. So I politely leave. You know I patronize places, that I may have heard don't necessarily appreciate people of color in the hopes that it is a isolated case of indifference. In this case it is obvious that not only do they not like people of color, they don't respect us or our dollar either; and for that reason I will never return! Of course seafood options are plentiful here; we're on the coast. So I went right down the street to Luke's Fish Market (new name) phone# 910-238-2256. THEY ARE PHENOMENAL!!! 5/5 fish market , 3/5 seafood restaurant. Overall a good place to spend your money. I buy shrimp there every so often, and it's always fresh and delicious. The fish always look very fresh, good eyes, good gills, not old like some places I've seen "fresh fish" at. The food was okay. I got fried shrimp which was good, and my husband got stuffed crab, which was like a crab cake stuffed into the emptied body cavity of the crab. Gruesome(!!!) but creative. The hushpuppies were awesome, but the rest of the sides were kinda lackluster. If I ever want good seafood in a white Styrofoam box, I'll be heading back there again, would recommend. read more

I bought three salmon steaks today. As soon as I opened the plastic bag I smelled bad fishy smelling. I have never smelled like that from salmon but I thought it would go away once I cooked them. But I was wrong. I tried it and it tasted just like that bad smelling. It was gross. It turned out one of three steaks was bad but I threw out all of them. I was very hesitant about visiting this place based on the building but do not let the looks fool you. It was amazing. The building is double sided though. I can not contest the validity of the "fresh sea food" because I did not order from there. However, I did get food from the restaurant side. 2 catfish sandwiches and a side of hush puppies. Total came up to $8.03 which was reasonable. Took it home and it was the best thing ever. Only downside is they don't have tables and chairs to sit down and eat. You have to take it to go. My first alarm went off when I asked for tartar sauce and was handed three little packets, for good seafood restaurants make their own tartar sauce--it's not difficult. None of my deep fried food was crisp. It was sort of mushy, even the crinkle cut fries, like it was dropped in oil at too low a temp. I ate not even half and gave the rest to the dog. Normally I might give them a 3 Only because they're not the greatest, but unfortunately in this town they basically hold the monopoly on seafood. Been buying live crabs from them for years. I'm from Maryland, my Uncle used to sell seafood. Often we had seafood to eat if nothing else! So I kind of know seafood!! My dear husband wanted to surprise me with a dozen lives crabs. I grew up with an understanding that the best crab season is any month without an "r" in it. May-August, and I probably would not have purchased them. But he tried... The box REEKED. Warning #1!!! Several of the crabs were dead and dying. About 8 of them probably only 2 inches point to point. I called to report the dead crabs. The female's response was excuse filled. I explained that there was no excuse. She put a manager on the phone, Which was the owner. I know him and his voice. I explained firstly that I wasn't looking for anything but simply wanted to report that they sold bad seafood. His response..."OKAY" and then crickets.. not even a "SORRY".. After reading some of the other reviews about them, I am certainly that I didn't misinterpret his lack of care. Shame on you sir!!! Usually I would rate this place five stars because I think they are awesome. However, I went there the other day and got filets of catfish and filets of trout. I brought the bag home and froze them. I opened the bag up today and both types of fish were in the same bag. I called the business and the "boss" told me that it shouldn't matter and that fish is fish. I guess it doesn't matter that different types of fish taste, well, different..and combing them in the same bag is ridiculous and messes with the flavor. This will sound uppity, but maybe because I'm not from Jacksonville, I have tastes buds which can sense the differing flavors in food. You shouldn't have to ask to have two different types of fish in TWO different bags. Not to mention, I wanted to cook catfish tonight, but now I have to cook all of the fish or else throw it out. Came in here today. Family owned, this is something I love. The owners daughter was so friendly, really informative regarding Oysters in the shell. I did call to ask if they carried the Oysters in the shell, the girl on the phone was from the business connected to them. I still needed crab meat which was priced well. I would rather spend a little more at a family run business then a supermarket. I hope this business is here for a very long time. read more

Went in on a Saturday as previous poster indicated.The place does look like a hole in the wall,but I learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover, however, in this instance the old adage was true, lots of frozen fish, and no visual appeal at all and bare bones selection. We were looking for salmon fillets or catfish fillets, FRESH or close to it, not frozen. We have been disappointed and shocked as the lack of fresh fish supply in the Jacksonville area. I can't comment on the restaurant section as I only wanted fresh seafood. I guess the search will continue. read more

The place may not look like much, but the food is amazing! The portions are very large and you can tell the seafood is fresh. We got a flounder and shrimp plate, split it and it was more than enough for 2! Also, if you are local, try the fresh seafood to take home and make. this is where i get all my seafood. i normally only get shrimp and the live crab...but i got some red snapper a week ago. it was awesome....nice and fresh. Baked it with a panko crust seasoned with cajun spices. my wife loved it and so did my 4yr old daughter. there is a take out restaurant next to it and that place aint so good. i got the catfish plate....the only thing that was any good was the hushpuppies. the fish batter had no taste really...just salt and pepper. so my recommendation would be to buy your seafood from the other side and cook it yourself. unless your a horrible cook;-) read more
