I was recommended this tailor, and I'm extremely disappointed by my experience. I gave them a brand new silk dress, and I picked it up to find the entire backside mangled and ripped up. They claimed that I had "brought it in damaged," and only offered a free alteration. I had to go back and forth with them to get reimbursement for this dress they ruined. It could have been a fluke experience, but one of the employees was not nice to me after I raised this concern to her and asked how we were going to resolve this issue. My name is Tomas and I'm a shopaholic. As a shopaholic, one of the biggest issues is that you tend to buy clothing pieces and have a "bigger picture" for them. When you have a visual interpretation and have zero clue on how to sew unlike folks on Project Runway, it's then that one must turn to an alterations/tailoring business. I was having a fashion emergency as I was attending Bon Appetit's Dessert & Champagne last Saturday where I realized I never hemmed a pair of pants I bought from April THE DAY OF Y'ALL. It was already 1:30pm and I had no clue how in the hell I was going to pull this off. By the graces of Cinderella and her fairy godmothers, I called Thimbelina who was not only open till 4pm on a Saturday but they were so kind and allowed me to take them in and have ready the same day. The staff was so polite and very efficient. They are handling so many clients so understand they are direct and straight to the point. I tried on my pants, informed them the ideal length and break I wanted on the pant. They only accept cash and checks so make sure to plan ahead! I'm a plastic only type of guy, so I made sure to swing by an atm right quick. I arrived 15 minutes before closing and tried on the pants. Freaking PERFECT. I was ecstatic and the craftsmanship was great. No sloppy hem or rushed stitching. Looked as if I gave them a week to get it done. I now will be taking my suits and other garments to get done here. I purchased a very expensive dress only to realize the zipper was broken. I could not find anything preventing the zipper from moving. I took it to one local tailor who said they would investigate, could possibly fix the zipper but may need to replace entirely. The last thing I wanted was for the dress to be ruined by this. I got a second opinion at Thimbelina. The seamstress who greeted me took one look at the dress and knew exactly what was wrong. She pulled open some threads in an area that had been sewn together when the dress was made and POOF, problem completely fixed. The entire thing took less than a minute. Thimbelina is not my usual alterations place (only because of location) but I recently bought a pair of jeans that was almost 8 inches too long. I was advised by fashionable type people that I had to get original hem and that Thimbelina was one of the top places to do that. My drop off & pick up were easy...although the shop was packed with ladies getting their last minute ball gown alterations for carnival. My jeans were ready in 2 weeks and the original hem was only about a dollar more than regular pants (or maybe the dollar more was for jeans?) They accept cash & checks only. read more

WOW! Talk about service. I get there and there are four sweet ladies running around. I needed to get two pants hemmed and the lady that pinned me took one of my pants and did it right on the spot! Freaky fast yall. I will say I am all about small business but they are also Vietnamese which I love backing my culture 100%. It is a small house on the corner so you might miss it. There is side parking in front down the street. One thing I will stress is that are FAST. She asked me if the 15th was okay to pick up and I said sure if that is the fastest you can have it. But she insisted that I give her a date and that it will be done by then. THREE DAYS (technically two because they close on Thursday). This place comes up as same day alterations, I came in to get my zipper fixed as it came off track. I've seen it done by my tailor in minutes but my place was closed so I chose Thimbelina off the reviews. Now, I may have been judged off of my day off appearance but I was the first to say hello and didn't really feel the enthusiastic energy that dwells in the comment section. I may try them again but overall, wasn't an extraordinary experience. They said $18 for two week turnaround and unfortunately, that wouldn't work. first off, the service is horrible. the ladies were rude and aren't clear on instructions or information about your clothing. 2nd, I brought a duffle bag for them to fix the zipper and instead of them actually replacing it and fixing it, they literally sewed the broken parts so now the duffle bag doesn't unzip all the way. 3rd, I had a $200 dress that needed to be altered and they put a giant run/rip in my dress straight In the middle of the dress. They didn't even care To tell me about it or mention it. all they wanted was my money. 4th, there's dead cockroaches in the "dressing room. 5th, I've taken a dress there to get altered before and I know it didn't get touched or actually fixed because i marked it just to make sure and sure enough it was still there. Two weeks to do a simple alteration and didn't bother to let me know they don't take credit cards. The ladies were pretty rude as well. I paid more for the alterations than I did for the actual dress. You essentially have to walk in and try and find someone or wait around for a year to be helped. Some say that finding a good tailor is priceless. After all, we're different shapes and sometimes sizing in the realm of 2, 4, 6, 8,10, 12 + just ain't gonna cut it. Reading the reviews of the skilled seamstresses at Thimbelina had me convinced that I would hit them up when I needed to. I only needed a hem on a cotton pencil skirt, ie, nothing major. I went in, put on the skirt and they swiftly pinned it to where it needed to go. That's where the swiftness ended, I'm afraid. I got my ticket and could not believe that a simple hem would take two weeks. I mean... two weeks? Is that the norm in town? I'm used to such things taking two business days. I picked up my skirt yesterday and admired the excellent hemline. I won't be walking around looking like a ragamuffin anytime soon. But... 17 dollars? Really? All this said, I would entrust them to expert tailoring for something major and I am willing to pay for it. But for a simple hem, I most likely will go elsewhere (Mom?). I took my wedding dress to another alterations place, and it turned out completely wrong. She shortened the straps too much, which lifted the waist too high and was unable to move the cups down to where they needed to be while taking out the extra fabric from where the cups used to be. I came to Thimbelina 3 weeks before my wedding with a lot of concerns, but the ladies there took one look at the dress and realized what needed to be done. It was done with plenty of time to spare, and the dress looked great. I thank all my Yelp friends and others for suggesting that I pop into Thumbelina's for my bridesmaid's dress alteration this past week since it was easily accessible from my house. I walked in on a Thursday, and said I needed my dress by Tuesday. She waved me into the changing room to make the alterations without any sort of sigh or "tut tut" you might get asking for a late favor. The dress was a double layer of two opposing fabrics; one being a light fabric under a thick lace with sequins adorning it. She pulled it tighter along the back seam and pinned it without putting any other alteration pins in it besides there. I took off the dress, and paid $32 in cash that I miraculously had on me that day. ((Cash or check only)). I really don't know the price of alterations, but I felt like this was fine. I ended up actually picking up the dress early Wednesday morning since I pushed my flight back, and trusted that the alterations had been made correctly. Four days later I put on the dress right before my sister's wedding and loved how Thumbelina had transformed this beautiful yet frumpy-ish garment into a well-fitting dress that I could feel confident in wearing again. Notes: -They do have weird hours and days off, so make sure to check! -Wear the undergarments that you'll be wearing when you wear the altered piece again -Bring cash or check -Parking behind the building on the grass -I would suggest trying on whatever you have altered there just to make sure, but they did a great job on my dress read more

this is my initial review only dropped off the garment so I can't speak to the workmanship yet however the ladies are so incredibly nice it's a cute little house shop at the end of Tchapitoulas. It's a little bit out-of-the-way for me but considering that I've already been to two other tailors I feel like the distance is the same for me living in midcity. Even though she was busy with a client when I walked in, she took a moment to acknowledge that I was there and let me know that she would be right with me. She asked if I had something to try on. I said yes and she showed me into the changing room while she finished up with her client. Once I was done she came in and complimented the dress and began to put pins in it to take it in where needed. she recommended that I wear different undergarments with it and even gave me options for the finished product. Just depending on how I would want it to look. Parking definitely was not a problem, and the good news is they're building a Regions right across the street from them so that will make it much easier since they only take cash and checks. So I came here because it is so highly recommended however I'm super disappointed. I live in Gentilly so driving out here is a little bit of a trek. They gave me a date of May 12th to pick up which is 2 weeks out from when I dropped the dress off. I got to Thimbalina and the dress was NOT ready. After spending my morning to come out here I was not willing to return. I was not ugly about it but I asked if I could wait as returning was not an option. The dress I brought had front pockets which I asked to have sewn shut since they stick out. One of the seamstresses convinced me to remove the pockets completely since (according to her) too much fabric is unflattering. I get the garment back and get to my car only to realize that the dress now has holes in it from where the pockets were, including a nice size hole that was not due to where the pocket was originally sewn on. I had to go back inside for them to sew the pockets back. No apology, nothing. Had I been ugly to them or raised my voice I could understand them not apologizing however I was completely polite. Will never return. I felt the need to post my experience just in case you're basing coming here off of their raving reviews (like I did). read more
