We ended up having the whole island to ourselves! Morris island itself is so wonderful, and we also saw dolphins, oyster beds, and blue crabs. Learning about the history of the island (as well as Gresh's connection to the island and family history) was really neat. We were worried about weather, but Gresh was very easy to stay in contact with throughout the morning before our tour.

Our concierge at the Courtyard by Marriott Historic District recommended a private tour that would…read moreknock our socks off to a beach that is only accessible at low tide and gets us as close was one can get on land to the historic Morris Island lighthouse. We met Gresh, the operator, at a dock outside of Charleston and he took us by motorboat through estuaries that were lined with live oyster beds and teeming with wildlife like brown pelicans and other birds. We actually saw a pod of bottle nosed dolphins playing near the boat! Spectacular. Gresh anchored off of the beach, which was prominently featured in the movie "Glory" as the battle site at which over 1000 black Union troops perished (and are buried there!). My kids and I walked the entire beach without encountering another soul on a brilliantly sunny and beautiful afternoon. We found lots of pretty shells and sand dollars to take home. Gresh was great - his family has been there for generations, he clearly loves the area and cares deeply for its environmental integrity and is a terrific tour guide. Do not miss this experience - we will remember it for the rest of our lives. It went all too quickly!

I was pleasantly surprised to find free street parking. We boarded the boat and headed out in the harbor. It was a beautiful night on the water and bonus, we got to see the sun set. They played a little music but mostly the captain gave us history of the harbor. We saw some old military ships and a couple of forts and went under the suspension bridge. They sell snacks, alcohol, soda and ice cream. I ordered a Pepsi and a chocolate chip ice cream cookie. And bonus, there is a bathroom on board. The staff was friendly. I saw egrets, both snowy and normal (ask them the difference), pelicans fishing, little crabs on the shores, and a dolphin passing through on my way back. Highly recommend.
