My husband and I chose to stay at the Vine for our vacation because of the high rank it has on TripAdvisor. I must say I am disappointed!! The hotel itself is modern and elegant. Food is awesome! However, the service is REALLY BAD!! It is the worst I've ever had. Here are some examples:
1. I don't mind the waiters/waitress (at the restaurants) trying to sell bottles of wine to make extra money, and it is totally understandable. But they should provide service at equal level of quality to people who purchase the wine and to those who choose not to consume a bottle of wine. My husband has mild allergy to alcohol, so we told the waiter that we were not going to have wine for dinner. At the Italian restaurant, the waiter did not come to our table once the whole night unless he was serving our food; he was almost like dumping the plates on our table; he clearly had good conversations with smiles on his face with the couple sitting next to us who had ordered wine!
2. The next night at the steak house was even worse! We ended up waiting for almost two hours to get a table when we were told that the waiting time would be around 50 minutes. When asked again into about one hour waiting, the lady told us she was not sure how long we needed to keep waiting. I totally understand it is hard to estimate a waiting time, but it shouldn't be this much inaccurate! Once we finally got our table, the waiter tried very hard to sell a bottle of wine. Once he failed, he let us wait about another 30 minutes before he came back to take our order. Another 20 minutes passed by and we were wondering where our appetizers were, he came with our entrees. Of course, we told him we had not had our appetizers yet. By the time we finished the appetizers, the same entree were served and of course they were already cold. Similar situation happened to the couple sitting next to us. They chose not to order a bottle of wine. They've waited about 30 minutes to get the waiter take their order, and the same waiter served a basket of bread AFTER they had their appetizers while everyone knows that he should have served the bread before appetizers (or even before taking orders). We can clearly observe he would make recommendations and/or take orders promptly for those who chose to order wine.
3. Like some people already mentioned, the AC could be a pain in the A$$ if you are unlucky like us. The room temperature was 18C (~65F) upon entry, which was really cold for us. We immediately changed the setting to 23C (~74F), but nothing changed after 20 minutes. We called the front desk and a technician who does not speak any English came by and couldn't fix the problem. Somehow he was able to inform us that he was going to change the setting in the central control system (in computer). We waited for about 10 minutes and again nothing changed. It was already very late in the evening so we didn't bother to contact the front desk again. The next morning we came down to the front desk and told a staff what happened before we went out for a tour. The staff promised it would be fixed when we come back. Of course, it was not fixed. We called again and the same technician came again. By this time, it was clear to us there must be something wrong with the AC controller on the wall. When we came down to the front desk and spoke with the staff about this, he said the guest cannot adjust the temperature setting of the AC in the room, but the hotel controls all room temperature in the system (which sounds really ridiculous). When he mentioned one option was to turn off the vault in the room ceiling (which controls the cool air coming into the room), we didn't agree because it meant there will be no cool air at all and the room would be very humid. He agreed and told us the technician will fix the problem. It seemed working indeed at first because the room temperature increased. But it kept increasing to the level almost the same as outside the next day. To this point, we realized the technician really just turned off the vault. We had no choice but to call again. The technician came and turn on the vault as expected. In the end, we just kept the balcony door open during the day to keep the room warm, and in the evening we turned off the AC.
Those were just the worst examples we encountered at the Vine. We had many similar situations throughout the stay with the service at the hotel, like some people already mentioned in this forum about the club membership. It is unbelievable how bad the service can be and how we were treated so differently because of a bottle of wine. I am teaching business at a big university in US. I am going to use this as an example to show my students how bad customer service could affect the business and discuss how the hotel should have done to retain its customers. Cancun is ranked No.1 place for spring break and I am going to advice my students to avoid Secrets the Vine at all cost. read more
