Remember the old fashioned steak house your parents used to take you to? They all had that western look and brown paneling on the walls. And the food was good and plenty! Nowadays, steak houses are fancy smancy and have $$$$ next to their name. Great food that is no way in hell worth what you pay. Well, Section Hand fits in the first category. Yes, it looks OLD, cause it is. They served good food back then and they still do. A medium size salad bar that all the veggies were nice and fresh. Several different cold salads like my mom used to make. A chicken fry big enough and good enough to make you smile. And extra gravy of course! Locally owned, so give them a try. read more

Very spacious inside, our group reserved the back room for some privacy while celebrating my sister-in-law's college graduation. They place is very cozy and was festively decorated for the holidays. Our waitress, even though she was taking care of our large group, was quick to get drink orders and bring them out, and food as well. My husband and I had the special which was a 6oz steak, salad, a side and your choice or green beans or fried okra. We ordered our steak medium rare and it was cooked correctly but the quality of the meat, I wouldn't say was top-notch. I'm guessing they don't add any seasoning, including salt when cooking because the steak was very bland. I don't believe in using steak sauce; I feel like the steak itself should shine on its own. In this case I did use A1 to add some flavor. The mashed potatoes were ok as well as the green beans. There's a salad bar up front with lots of options beside salad like stew, pasta salads, and beans. The toasted bread was delicious, like a big crouton, but the ranch was sweet so not really my cup of tea. I'm thinking this place is aimed for an older crowd which is why they don't use a lot of seasoning but once you add your own it's not bad. read more

This place is NOT covid clean. The chairs are sticky and the salad wagon was undesirable. We had to move our table out a little in order for some of our group to get in to sit, which was no problem, BUT the table underneath was so filthy and sticky it made my skin crawl. I had to wash my hands before I could stand to try to eat. I felt like everything I touched was dirty. Their food wasn't bad but not up to the standards they used to serve. If you care about your health, you will avoid this place. This covid has people acting crazy but the owner simply doesn't care about the social distancing that must be enforced. There is no social distancing in either the waiting area ( must have been 20 people in the waiting area) and after a waitress seated 6 more people in an already over crowded room I brought it to their attention. Immediately I was the enemy and I stated that I would leave. I couldn't believe they not only had the salad bar open but also a buffet! What sanitary cleaning is done to those serving spoons? Unbelievable. And the owner wanted me to pay for a terrible salad and iced tea. I won't be back. Stay healthy! read more

First time customer. Visited 7/21/2018, wife and I both had 6 oz. Sirloin. Meat had a strange texture and tasted a bit like Liver. Asked for Medium and got well on mine and close to medium on wife's steak. Okra was under cooked and hard. Salad bar was great and baked Potato. Not worth the $$$ spent. Always remember to tip the waiter/waitress, not their fault that the food is not good! read more

This place is so overrated very old and worn out looking on the inside, needs complete remodel the servers don't wear mask plus the buffet line needs cleaned up when we ate there food was laying on the floor waiter took our food plates to different tables, because she couldn't remember at that point we got up and left because of the ignorance and unhealthy practices, I will never step foot in that place again. So I thought it would be nice to take my family out for a nice meal. I ordered the chipotle burger and a beer it took so long for the beer I almost was going to ask did they have to go to the store to get it. My server was ditzy and lost during the whole service. My burger was missing the key ingredient CHIPOTLE. They said they didn't have it so they just put extra jalapeños and pepper jack. They lady at the front asked how everything was and I told her the truth very politely. I have never seen somebody make excuses for somebody who did their job incorrectly. The lady at the front was very rude and just kept feeding me excuses. I have never seen such a lack of customer service in almost 15 years of being in the food industry. This place is a joke. Not too bad of a restaurant for some country cooking. I had their Yankee steak with a loaded baked potato when I went. The Yankee steak is basically a hamburger patty with some brown gravy and vegetable sauce or something. They cook it with some onions and mushrooms which are also served with it. Good flavour, just the right amount of strength. Baked potato was okay, not the main entree so I don't blame them for it not being perfect. You are able to serve yourself a salad from the salad bar with every dish you order so that's a plus. Over all, not bad. Wouldn't go out of the way for it. read more

It's a no frills steakhouse. They have great flavor on the steaks, hit or miss on proper cook, great side options and a basic salad bar. I don't live in Brownwood but it is the best salad bar I've found when visiting. Then menu is well rounded from chicken to fish to calf liver to other beef options. We have been happy for the most part. The steaks can have a heavy fat cap and need to be trimmed more but we keep coming back and are never so disappointed that we won't return. We've had great experiences and we've had so-so ones. The staff is always very pleasant and attentive and that keeps us happy. read more

I just moved back to Brownwood after five years and I'm very happy to see the Section Hand Steak House is still just as good as it ever was! Yes, it looks like some sort of cheap motel cafe from the outside and yes, they haven't invested a lot in trendy interior decor, but those are not the reasons to go there. Hands down, this restaurant is one of the best places I know to get an absolute excellent steak at a great price. My wife and I both ordered ribeye dinners there this week, and once everything was paid for, including drinks, dessert and tip, we were out about $50, which is a deal these days. As for things on the menu other than steak, you can pretty much do no wrong, because it's going to be good and you're going to like it, whether it be chicken, seafood, ribs, burgers, etc.. They also have a small but adequate salad bar with all the choices being fresh and appealing.......However, in my opinion, the green stuff just fills you up and leaves less room for the beef, but whatever floats your boat....:D....For dessert, any piece of pie on the menu is great, but I personally prefer the coconut. Lastly, while I've been to this restaurant many times over the years, I've never experienced anything other than excellent, friendly, prompt and knowledgeable service, which makes the whole dining experience even better. Hopefully the Section Hand will be around for many more years to come! read more

Love this place. Dependable quality and service. We were with a large group recently and ate there for both breakfast and dinner. Servings are generous and well-cooked. I had bacon, eggs, biscuits and grits for breakfast. Sirloin and REAL mashed potatoes for dinner. The salad bar is great, with those amazing giant croutons. Service is always competent. read more

This place was pretty good (but I could have been jaded after my visit to the Texas Grill earlier in the day). Most meals come with the salad bar, which is average but a nice touch. The chicken fried chicken was good and the fries were great (they had run out of baked and mashed potatoes). We walked in with a group of 20 and they were able to quickly accommodate us, didn't even charge us the 15% for a group over 8. I even got re-fills on my tea! If I ever find myself up in Brownswood again then I'd probably eat here... not the worlds best food, but good, filling, and a friendly atmosphere. read more

The food was good but the manager rude! I received a Gift Certificate for 2. There is only me in my family in BWD. I ate half there and took the rest home. While there I had a refill of ice tea. I had a small salad. When I noticed they had beets I got a small plate of beets. When I was leaving I noticed I did not get a salad. I asked the waitress for a container for the salad. The waitress was great. She brought it. I got my salad. Please understand I was in the first booth. When I went to give a tip to the waitress the owner scowled and asked if I had 2 or 3 people. I explained just me. The rest was to go home. He then proceeded to make me verify everything I ate and what I was taking with me! Needless to say I'll eat elsewhere. Sort of cheesy hunting lodge atmosphere, but good service, full salad bar. I have a soft spot for the chicken fried steak since I used to get it all the time as a kid. The actual steak is good too, just regular no-fuss steak on a plate with potatoes however you want (The fries are really crispy and good) Massive portions, good to share! read more

One of the things I love about my job is traveling to different towns and eating at local restaurants. Since I had to spend a couple of days in Brownwood I decided to check out a couple of the local spots an Section Hand was on the list. All in all Section Hand is a good restaurant that I would definitely stop by and eat at if I come back to Brownwood again. Have never had an issue here and we dine in and use to do carryout a few times a month. Until a recent take out we received was incorrect. Upon calling and asking for a manager I explained that there were several issues with our Steak takeout. The gentleman instantly became defensive telling me that how I received the order is how it is always done. I informed him that we have had this same thing at least a dozen times and this time it was different. He told me I could bring it back which would have been great except we are 40 minutes away. My husband took me to the Section Hand Steak House while passing through Brownwood. I must say the service was perfect but the food was just average. The salad bar was ok but the lettuce looked old and wilted. My husband had a steak and he loved it and said it was cooked perfectly. I ate at Section Hand for the first time the other day. I had the pork ribs, which were excellent, and came with a salad bar and a loaded baked potato. Their ribs are a style similar to Chili's, in that they are not cut apart, and come pre-glazed with the excellent house barbecue sauce. Section Hand's ribs are spare ribs, not baby back, however. The loaded baked potato was also excellent, and probably had more calories worth of toppings than the ribs contained altogether. The salad bar was somewhat disappointing, having only chopped iceberg greens. The other vegetables were rough-cut and chunky, and the bacon bits were artificial. But what do you expect from salads at a steakhouse? Service was prompt and attentive. I wish the meal had been a few dollars cheaper, but I guess I wasn't exactly bargain shopping when I ordered the ribs. I'll definitely be back. read more

My husband and myself wanted to stop off and grab lunch on our way back to San Antonio. I always like to use Yelp to help us find somewhere to eat. Years ago we went to Underwoods and I vowed never to go back. Yuck! So we chose the Section Hand this time. Walking in is like walking back into the 80's. Not a bad thing but just a bit outdated. I ordered the salad bar and a baked potato. The salad bar has a good selection of toppings and salads available, such as pasta salad, pea salad, coleslaw etc. My baked potato was fully loaded and was please that there were scallions on it. My husband ordered the 8oz. Sirloin medium rare with a loaded baked potato. The steak came out medium rare, was very flavorful. The steak seemed thin to me but not as thin as a breakfast steak. Food was good. There are not many choices in Brownwood to eat that are locally owned so this place I would recommend if your looking for a locally owned restaurant. It opens in 1981 and has been family owned since then. Service was great. Scott was our waiter and as written in previous reviews, he's a great waiter. At the end I couldn't pass up the coconut cream pie as recommend in many reviews. It's homemade and was very good. Creamy with a great crunch of toasted coconut on top. I wish I had room for the chocolate silk pie but I guess that'll have to wait till next time. So to sum it up, decor is "retro", food was good and priced right and the service was awesome. read more

It is good. It has been here forever, so you know they please most of the people most of the time. I am a filet fan. I always get a filet where ever I go, and they are usually very good because it is excellent meat. I have had the filet here at the Section Hand and it was delicious. I have tried "sirloin" at many places, including trying to cook it myself, and I am always disappointed. But the Sirloin they serve at the Section Hand, is very flavorful and extremely tender. We have a monthly meeting there, and they have a Sirloin lunch special, and that is what I get there now, since it is so inexpensive and always good. I think it is an excellent value. I get the flavor and tenderness that I usually have to get from a filet, without the expense. I will still order a filet for dinner or an evening out with the husband, but for a quick lunch....the sirloin does the trick. The salad bar is your typical salad bar. At the start of the bar is the iceburg lettuce...but down at the far end, past the dessert, is the romaine lettuce. So I always get my romaine, then go to the start of the line. The Romaine lettuce has always been fresh, crisp and better than what I find at the grocery store. Now for dessert. Try the French Silk pie. Basically, it is your chocolate pie. But it's really good. Because the Section Hand has a drive through window, we will sometimes just go through the drive through and order "pie" just because we are in the mood. It is very sad when they say "sorry, we are all out." I've seen people order the chicken fried steak, and have heard it is good. It's not a super fancy place, but it is basic good food. Nasty... my onion rings were cold. I asked for a well done steak it was medium... my loaded mash potatoes were cold. If you think you are getting loaded mash potato Not... the mash potatoes tasted like instant. They put bacon bits on them and tried onions. I wasted 33.0. This place is very sentimental to me... I lost my Dad 2 years ago and this was one of our favorite places to go for as long as I can remember. First of all, if you go on the night where the Sirloin is the special then 3 people can eat on the Sirloin for 2 and 2 can eat on Sirloin for 1 just add extra set-ups. The salad bar is just awesome. I would suggest sticking to a steak however, I enjoy a chicken fry there every once in a while but I'm always wishing I had gone with the other:) For the price you just can't beat it and we always know we are going to be satisfied when we leave and that is very important. read more

The chicken fried steak is pretty good, but unless you want it soggy with canned green bean juice, tell them no beans or have them put them in a bowl on the side. Had breakfast this morning with my family. The food was great, however, the waitress brought me white toast instead of wheat toast. She said she though I asked for regular toast, but I specifically requested wheat. Nevertheless, she was polite and brought me two pieces of buttered wheat toast. When I got to the last piece, however, it was burnt! (I just scraped it off.) Would have given them a 5 if this had not happened! read more
