Let me start off by saying that these are some of the best chocolates I've ever had. The variety is amazing and they have something for everyone. I need to give props to the ladies that work at this location for how they handled some crazy customers while I was in there yesterday with my little boy. Some ladies came in and were being very rude to the employee handing out samples and started to make a huge scene in the store to scare off customers. The employee did everything right in trying to resolve the problem and try to get the group of crazies out of the store. If I didn't have a four year old with me I would have stepped in and backed up the employee while she was being verbally attacked by these women. Sorry she had to go through that. I'm on a diet right now. Yeah, that's not the way one of these reviews for a chocolate place should normally start BUT here we go. I'm on a diet right now. I've essentially given up sweets EXCEPT that I split a piece of chocolate every night with my husband and it's one of the few things that's allowing me to keep a grasp on reality. Since I'm having very little QUANTITY, I've been splurging on the quality. Since I grocery shop right next to this store, we've been on a half lb box every few weeks habit for a few months now. So, it's chocolate. It's really good and they have a bunch of different varieties. Some of my favorites are the dark chocolate mint patties, and there's a white chocolate mint one that is divine (think amazing peppermint bark) and I guess I really love chocolate and mint but they also have this dark chocolate brown butter one that knocks my socks off. They don't do anything wrong. And they give samples every time you come in! However, the fifth star is for understanding my plight. It was 7pm on the dot (when they close) and they had the door open but the lady had already closed down the register. She was kind enough to reopen for us so we could get our chocolate fix. That's customer service right there. I thanked her profusely and wish I could remember her name to shout praises from the rooftops! Until I regain my sanity and start eating like a normal human again, I'll continue to buy boxes of Sees, as ironic as that sounds. read more

Full disclosure here: I grew up with See's Candies as a staple for holiday treats, and they were available everywhere, much like the orange, lemon and lime trees in NorCal. So naturally, we took them all for granted until I moved out of state, and all we had to pick from was something generic from the supermarket. All a distant memory now, until I saw fellow Yelpers check in at a See's Candies shop in Austin. So I went straight over there, to Braker Lane x 183, right next to HEB. An aproned woman who reminded me of Mrs. Santa (not the real one, but you know what I mean) greeted me at the door with an open sample box, and offered me a dark chocolate blueberry cream. "We've been here three years," she replied robotically to my excitement at having found them. They must get that a lot. I only nodded in reply, because I was eating the entire blueberry cream at once. So okay, the particulars: See's is a handmade candy shop, and you can buy these delectable treats by the individual piece (line forms to the right) or entire boxes (stacked along the left by category). A pound in a regular box is about $21.50. You can pay more for a fancier heart-shaped box, but the rectangular ones are a better deal. During holiday seasons (like Valentine's), they even pre-wrap them in pretty paper for you. You don't have to wait, either, because there they are in a stack, all pre-wrapped. It's an easy pick-up on your way home. I heard a guy asking for sugar-free chocolates, and Mrs. Santa didn't bat an eye, just directed him to a shelf that I never plan to visit, because I am going for the full-sugar, full-fat versions here. But just in case you aren't, now you know. Check Yelp to see if they're offering any special discounts. I found a $5 coupon for a purchase of $30 or more. Omg, I love chocolate. But when I go buy some, I try to act cautious, like a diabetic in a candy shop. Oh wait, in this case I AM a diabetic (type 1, thanks) in a candy shop! So, when I eat candy.... it's gotta be good. I'm not going to waste my time with things that just don't blow me away. See's candies is WORTH it. I highly recommend the walnut-dark chocolate (not my usual thing, but the texture was divine!) and the pineapple truffle. My two personal faves, with an honorable mention for the "chocolate butter" Easter eggs we bought. This little store popping up in my neighborhood is going to make it a lot harder for my usual sweet tooth fixes to get any attention. Being greeted with chocolate by the friendliest employee ever softened my cold heart bias against a California chain. Though, I shouldn't have expected any less with a brand that's been in business for over 90 years. There are over 100 pieces of confectioneries to enjoy! Ranging from milk chocolate (with/without nuts) to dark chocolate (also with/without nuts), white chocolate, truffles, and specialties like bon bons, fudges, and caramels. The variety is mind boggling and I'm certain See's will be slammed come Valentine's day. At about $20/lb for 20-25 pieces it's hard to not stop by for "just a few." My favorite was probably the lemon truffle and dark chocolate raspberry cream. As for the chocolates themselves, if I was rating based on taste alone I'd give them a 4. I think the fillings are a touch too sweet and the chocolate quality is just ok. But the price, cleanliness, and charming employees round out the experience! See's and I are going to be great friends, I'm sure. I pulled into the lot today and then promptly turned around and said "too soon" in anticipation of just how often I'll find myself here. read more

I love that we now have a See's Candies here in Austin. Instead of picking up one of the pre-packaged See's boxes at SFO/SJC on my way back to AUS, I can now drop by my own See's Candies store and fill a customized box of my own favorite chocolates! My first experience at See's Austin was a happy one! Parking was super easy as this See's location is located right next door to the HEB on 183/Braker. Upon entering, I was greeted by Genevieve, who was quick to offer me the chocolate sample of the day. She walked me through the most popular chocolates and also some of her personal favorites. I even got to sample some new chocolates that I haven't tried before! I left feeling like a million bucks, plus maybe a few extra calories -- and well worth it! I purchased a gift for a neighbor of ours, and her family was delighted to receive a box of (personalized!) See's Candies! (Thank you so much for your help, Genevieve!) They are little expensive, but super clean, super nice people, and good candies. While nearly all are chocolate covered, most highlight other flavors. Yes, I have lived in Austin almost all my life and love Lammes but See's has a few sweets I can not resist. I was so excited to see their store here because some of their candies are not available for shipping because of freshness issues. For example, the bonbons, oh my God, the coconut bonbons and Tipperary bonbons are so rich and decadent, like buttah. And the lollipops come in great flavors. The cinnamon and dreamsicle ones are only available at certain times of the year but so good. They all have a creaminess to them that makes them yummy! I know, calm down there partner! I've been feeling down lately and decided to pop in here for a treat to cheer myself up. I grew up in California (I know know, sorry) and fondly remember See's as a little kid. This location is nice and tidy and inviting and transports you back to the days of soda fountain shops and pre-internet childhood summer days. There was a cheerful sales woman behind the counter helping a customer package up 4lbs of goodies to surprise her husband with which made me smile. It took the sole sales woman a while to organize and box up her order so I just browsed and let the nostalgia wash over me. I eventually settled on just getting a couple butterscotch lollipops since those were my favorite as a kid and the lovely sales woman gave me two dark chocolate truffle samples for being patient and understanding with the large order in front of me. Score! I tried the dark nougat which was a heavenly mixture of dark chocolate, nougat, honey, and coconut and I tried the blueberry truffle which is a creamy bluebuttery melt-in-your-mouth delight. Their chocolates and candies are to die for - all made in SF I believe and shipped here. The quality of the chocolates is incredible. You can absolutely taste the difference in each candy you choose. The ingredients are of the highest quality and make the chocolates an incredible treat. Prices are a bit higher than other chocolates but the enjoyment is well worth the cost. I love that you can pick and choose the chocolates that you like most - white, milk, or dark, or pick from pre-assembled (mix and match) style boxes, as well. Great selection of different size boxes. Many long years ago, I studied at a university in California. This was my first experience with sees candy. Through the years, I would enjoy intermittent periods of student starvation, and having a bit of money. During the times when I had money, I would buy boxes of chocolates from sees. And when I did not have money, I could always count on going in and being given the sample of the day. Nothing has changed. Except there are less times of student starvation. thankfully, I managed to graduate from college and find a job. I'm especially glad that nothing has changed with sees, they maintain the same atmosphere here in Austin, as I would find in a store in California. In fact, on my last trip to California, I actually thought to myself that this store in Austin was better than the store in Laguna Beach, south of Los Angeles. What you won't find here, is fair trade organic extra dark 90% cocoa chocolate. This is the place to come for sensuous, decadent, make you feel very guilty, boxes of chocolates that you can custom make yourself. This is the place to come, for gifts to those many many people that you know, who came here from California, and you know that they sort of miss California. But they are here in Austin, like we all are, and we all know, that Austin is the best place ever. read more

The candy may be sweet, but the customer service sure is disgusting. I will never purchase from this location again. A frequent customer, usually in to buy treats and gifts for people I care about, I was treated so poorly the past *two* times I've been in by the same salesperson. Bravo to her, though, as I suppose she follows all the rules and cares more about "company policy" than customers. I bought a gift for a friend yesterday and asked for a bag, but she said I couldn't have a bag because I might "use it for the sample" I chose not to eat and she's "not allowed to give bags for samples". Please note: I ALSO purchased a gift box. Today, going in for more gift sets, I was struggling with a cart full of grocery bags and my 10-month-old, before I even made it into the door, she said, "you can't come in here - that's not store property". I replied, "my baby is in it, can I just put it to the side and grab the gift boxes?" "No, you're blocking everyone," she said. I looked around - there was one person browsing in the back of the store. Thanks for not helping, not giving me any respect as a customer or a mom who was struggling. Thanks to the check ins of some of my Yelp friends I discovered See's Candy is open in Austin! Ok, not technically open til Friday (they will have ribbon cutting and prizes), but they are open any way. Since I am one of those California transplants (yeah, yeah, I know) I know all about See's. Amazing chocolates. Just amazing! When I walked in I had a big smile on my face and told the two employees how happy I was to see them! The rewarded me with a piece of dark chocolate chip truffle. I told them how much I had missed the Key Lime truffles and the butterscotch squares. They rewarded me with a butterscotch square. I was afraid if I kept talking they would keep giving so I decided to buy a few pieces instead. The Key Lime truffle is my second favorite piece of candy in the world. White chocolate over a fluffy truffle filling that tastes amazingly like...Key Lime! My favorite piece of candy though.....oh the butterscotch square. What can I say about the butterscotch square? It is like brown sugar dipped in chocolate...but better! To me there is only one way to eat a piece of See's. Take the tiniest little nibble and let it slowly melt in your mouth. I love See's. I lived in CA for a while and got to love them then... even when I was a poor student coming in to buy one piece of candy, they'd still always give me a sample. That gracious approach to customer service stayed with me... but the chocolate is reason enough to keep coming back no matter what. It's really high quality, and very smooth. I usually order a custom pound box, even though they're a little more expensive than the pre-boxed chocolates, because that way I can get whatever I'm feeling like. Which is usually heavily weighted to chocolate-covered cherries... yum. But this is also such nice chocolate that it makes good gifts or something special to put on the table after a holiday dinner, and yet not so expensive that it can't be an anytime treat, too. read more

I stopped by today at 6:20 pm on a rainy afternoon. I had a small grocery cart with a couple grocery bags. As I opened the door, the sales associate rushed to the door and said "Oh, we don't allow grocery carts in the store!!!" I backed out and said "well, I'm not leaving $30 of groceries outside unattended." She could have prefaced her statement with "I'm sorry" and could have offered me an option of carrying my grocery bags inside the store.
