The world out there on Almaden Avenue is a meat grinder. Concrete, exhaust, people with deadlines and clean shoes pushing each other into early graves. You walk around Downtown San Jose long enough and the asphalt starts to look like a permanent solution. Then you find Selva. It's dark inside, the kind of dark that hides the lines on your face and the mistakes in your head. They've built a damn jungle in there, green leaves and shadows, a truce with the city outside. I didn't want a scene; I wanted a drink. The bartender looked like she'd seen a few things herself. She didn't give me a lecture; she gave me tequila. Neat. None of that sugar-water other places serve to the tourists. It hit the throat like an honest word--hot, sharp, and true. If you aren't drinking agave neat here, you're missing the point of having a mouth. If you must have a cocktail they have those dialed in, just to keep your feet on the ground. Early on, the place has a quiet tranquility. It's a lounge for survivors. You can sit under the fake canopy, look at the water, and feel like you've escaped the whole damn century. Later, the lights drop lower, the bass starts to rattle your ribs, and the DJs turn it into a different kind of animal. But if you catch it right, when the room is still breathing easy, it's one of the few spots in this valley where a man can find an honest glass and a corner to forget his name or roll in with a crew and really send it. The bar team and bottle service team are always nice and try to get to everyone in a timely matter even when it gets later into the night. 10/10 would recommend if you're looking for a good time out in San Jose. Solid little place to grab a drink with normal prices. Bartender was super friendly. Really what I enjoyed about this place was the jungle theming. They definitely went all out to where there's even a little waterfall type thing with a bridge to walk over. There's also a small little upstairs area with seating that is nice. We went on an early Thursday night and it was actually pretty quiet/not crowded, which I appreciated. Made it easy to hang out and chat without feeling rushed. The cocktail menu is fairly basic, but the drinks themselves were good, so no real complaints there. Nothing super inventive, but solid. This place just opened and my company rented it out for a party. Service was attentive and wonderful. They were so accommodating and welcoming, going above and beyond for patrons and attendees. I love the decor and vibe. It feels cozy yet spacious. The stars, plants, and water fountain aren't overly kitschy, but just seem fun. Would be a great place for date night or girls' night out. It's the best vibes here and I love this place. If you want an intimate and not too loud experience with dark and sexy lighting inside, this is your place. I came on a Saturday and whatever dj that brought the late 90s/2000s vibes, keep him in rotation! The bar is beautiful and I love all the different bottles of tequila. This is perfect spot for date night if you don't want to go out dancing but want to have conversation with good music or just hanging out with friends and catching up. The hostess is very nice and always smiling. All staff here are very nice and seem happy to work there. I wish they had Bailey's because I love creamy carajillos with just a small touch of Baileys but their caraillo is decent and hits the spot. I also came here for the grand opening and they had a very simple drink menu so I would love to see new or seasonal cocktails, and craft cocktails added here in the future, but I know, baby steps as this place is brand new. I came back here a few weekends ago with a few friends. There was a security guard who was being really sweet about the wait, and he was saying he was going to do his best to see if we can get in. There was, however another person there, not sure if he's the manager, but he definitely gave the presence that he was in charge, and the security guy said he really couldn't do anything unless this guy approved it. The manager guy was very rude and immature. I had asked politely if it was possible to get in, since there were several people leaving. He just had such a bad attitude, it felt like talking to a teenager. It seems like the role this man has for his job might be overwhelming for him, there should definitely be someone else at the front door. His attitude and demeanor definitely doesn't bring a good welcoming environment to this business. It's unfortunate because it's such a cute place and my first experience there was great! Came with a group of friends on their soft opening and all the staff were all very welcoming! We were able to get booth seating as there weren't that many people in the space. It seems like not many people know about this place and it is tucked in a street that can be easily missed but it is definitely a gem! I was going to give this place another try this weekend with some friends and bf, until this message came though. By the name of James I believe they are the owner or worker for Selva. They messaged me apologizing for my first impression experience and wanted me to give them a chance by texting to someone so he can host me and whoever I bring. So I decided to look through the persons profile and not only did he left one review a month ago but they also left another one about 35 mins ago! The photo they uploaded has nobody but the workers in there. So this must be the owner. If you are wanting to gain crowds, maintain a good rating. Do not go in and start making random reviews just to boost your ratings and maintaining it at a 4.0 or higher, also do not make your employees make reviews just to maintain a high star ratings. If you wanted to make it right. You should've messaged me alone and maybe things would've been different. I am very disappointed because I was going to give this establishment another chance. They're a new spot that's still in their soft opening phase, so seems like not many people know about them yet. Upon entering, there is a little bridge and waterfall, along with some foliage and little twinkling lights on the ceiling to give you the impression that you're in the jungle under the stars. Their shelf of liquor looked beautiful and impressive. The lighting is kept very dim and the music is not too loud, which makes it an ideal place for a date or catching up with friends. The prices of their cocktails seem very reasonable as most were $13 or $15. Although, their menu is very limited. Also, no food menu. My group got the Margarita, Carajillo, Cosmopolita, and El Diablo. I liked my friends' drinks, but was not a fan of mine (Carajillo). We were able to stand by the service well at the bar and grab drinks. But boy was I surprised when I asked for a tequila list and they only had a bottle service list. It sounds like it may be coming, but it's pretty hard to properly order a sipping tequila without one. Terrible service, we made a reservation for 4 people and we had the Obligation of a minimum consumption of 300 dls in bottle service, when they gave us our table we asked the waitress for beers apart from the bottle, and it turns out that she could not bring beer, that we had to go to line up at the bar to order them, approximately at 12 am a couple of friends arrived who were leaving the Shakira's concert, and we couldn't add them to our table, unless we bought another bottle, since there was an hour left for them to close, but we accepted and asked for a little more space, since the VIP tables, That they were on one side of us were empty! And the person in charge told us NO !! that we could only use the Space we originally had for 4! And at 5 minutes several people entered that VIP area and they were not consuming, there were approximately 7 people with only a couple of drinks in their hands , and they want us to pay an extra $350 dollars aprox , so that two extra people could sit at a table of 4! And we had to go line up at the bar to order beer or any other drink, so what is the Sense of the VIP service, and why is it not the Same obligation for all customers.???? For very good atmosphere and good place, it's useless if the service is terrible .... we never come back to this place... we visit a lot of bars in San Jose for many years and this place could be a great place to visit but just if you Walk in, a couple drinks and that's it!!!! The ambiance and music were amazing, but besides that I wouldn't recommend this bar for anyone who looks young. I went on a Thursday afternoon with some friends to celebrate their graduation. We're all 21-22 years old. When we first walked in, we waited near the entrance because we weren't familiar with the layout and didn't realize you could just walk straight back to the bar area. When we finally made our way to the bar, the bartender seemed to ignore us for a while despite it not being particularly busy. When he eventually came over, the attitude started immediately. We were asked for our IDs, and when he scanned my driver's license, he told me, "I'm going to have to ask you to leave." Confused, I asked why, and he said it had been flagged as fake. Since I knew it was a real license, I offered my ID card as a second form of identification. He took it, scanned it, and when I asked if it worked, he replied, "Yeah, it did," with a deadpan stare and an incredibly rude tone. My friend and I started talking about how strange it was that a legitimate license could get flagged and what someone is supposed to do if they don't happen to have a second form of identification on them. Instead of simply explaining the situation, the bartender told me I should "throw that card out" because every bar uses the same system and someone would eventually take it. When I explained that it was my driver's license and not something I could just throw away, he again responded with, "I don't know, I'm just telling you what the machine says," before walking away. What really bothered me is that even after I proved my age with a valid second form of identification, his attitude never changed. If the concern was genuinely whether I was old enough to be there, that issue had already been resolved. Yet he continued speaking to us as if we were inconveniencing him simply by being there. The entire interaction felt hostile from the moment we approached the bar until the moment we left. We ended up having one drink in silence and leaving afterward because the experience was so uncomfortable. Fortunately, when we closed out, a different employee helped us and she was incredibly sweet and friendly. I completely understand that bartenders have to deal with fake IDs and difficult customers. I have no issue with him checking my identification or taking the scanner's warning seriously. My issue is the attitude. There is a way to explain a situation professionally without being dismissive, rude, or making guests feel unwelcome. We watched him joke around and laugh with other customers at the bar, yet every interaction with us felt cold, irritated, and condescending. By the end of the night, it genuinely felt like we were being treated differently because we look young. What ruined the experience wasn't the scanner, it was the way we were treated afterward. I totally understand having a bad day or a stressful night but we watched him interact with different customers and that same attitude wasn't there. It just sucks that our night ended on such a bummy note. read more
