In a word: ENCHANTING. Yes. I'm enchanted by my date night dinner at Sen Organic. First, the designated parking makes everything instantly more accessible and simple. So I loved that. The place has an otherworldly feel of a fairy garden with tiny lights, lattice wound with plants and table set with fresh flowers and miniature oil lamps . The menu is exciting, especially for vegans, but also so aesthetically pleasing with hand drawn illustrations of most dishes. The hostess was a sweetheart who welcomed us in and showed us to our seats. Our server, Charlie, was great. Could not have asked for a nicer experience ordering. And he did a fine job checking on us without imposing and offering suggestions when prompted. The FOOD!! Oh my! Presentation was 10/10 on everything, starting with the breaded cauliflower appetizer served on an elegant platter over a bed of spring greenery. All the dishes were clay-style and visually complemented the food they held. My husband got a soup, Purple Bun Sen, that arrived looking like a tiny magical eco system with sprigs of grasses and a cluster of young mushrooms as garnish. The broth was a rich purple elixir that tasted unbelievably delicious. I got a Lemongrass Turmeric Tofu and multi grain plate, not quite as magical in appearance as his, but every bit as tasty. We shared a frosted coffee with vegan cream topping, Caramel Phin Freeze, immensely refreshing in this tripple-digit heat wave, and we got a little Dark Chocolate Cashew Tart to go. This was one of the best meals I've had lately! Beware, the prices are pricy, but over all worth it. And it's in Carytown so you're paying, partially, for atmosphere and vibes but also for all organic food. They have so many vegan options and we got most of them. The crispy fried tofu was, predictably, my favorite, but the crispy golden rolls, potato pie, fried cauliflower, and vegan sen bún hue were all wonderful. Try the beet wine sauce! It's very different and it's delicious. Went out with a group of 5 last night. Our initial plan was Pho Luca, but they had about an hour long wait. I've driven down this street hundreds (probably thousands) of times and never really paid attention to the close by Sen, but one of the girls in our group had been before and recommended we pop over to see if we could get seated here. They only had outdoor available and it was pretty cold out so we were hesitant, but they were kind enough to move around the heaters to make us more comfortable, which was super appreciated. Their menu is honestly a LOT. Lots of words, lots of sections, lot of text. I can definitely see how it could be overwhelming to someone. I tried to just focus on the pho/soups section. They also have desserts and bahn mi, and noodles, and entrees like salmon and chicken. All of us got the brisket pho. I'm. it even gonna lie - I was taken aback by the pho being $27. I've tried a lot of pho spots over the last 10-15 years and have never experienced prices this steep. I know it's because they're organic and all, but WHEW. Some of the special offerings were upwards of $50 and $85. The serving size was huge (s/o to our servers muscles!) and they certainly don't skimp out of noodles or meat. The broth was tasty and beefy, but not as rich/fatty as I'd have liked it. They give you plenty scallions and onions which I LOVE, as well as your usual sides of basil, limes, bean sprouts and jalapeños. They gave the tiniest slivers of jalapeños, but there was a delicious, spicy red sauce that I ended up using all of. Our server was Rachel. Very attentive and gave us menu recommendations and checked on us regularly. Sen has absolutely gorgeous glassware and gold cutlery. I was so pleased when it was time to pack up our leftovers and she brought out gold ladles. (The worst is trying to dump your pho into a quart container and spilling it everywhere.) Because we were a group of 5, an auto-gratuity of 20% was added to the bill. They also do not allow the check to be split more than 2 ways, so definitely keep that in mind if you go with a group. We, of course, checked out the menu ahead of time and were intrigued. The restaurant is a quaint little place that is reminiscent of places I've frequented overseas. The day we visited was nice enough to sit outdoors. The inside looked small, but welcoming and the outdoor space provided atmosphere while remaining connected to Cary St. The food provided a wide range of flavor. A few takeaways from visiting Richmond are that the city is underrated and the food is way better than I could have ever expected! Sen Organic was no exception. I really strongly suggest ordering the Potato Pie, which was crispy and flavorful. The grilled mushroom roll was also such a treat. The pho was also exceptional. I did have to take the cilantro out because I am not a fan (don't judge me it's genetics), but it was otherwise so full of flavor. They really stuff the pho full of delicious vegetables and seasoning, I was so impressed. It's also just a nice vibe and located right in the strip of fun activities. My friends and I spontaneously stopped in for an early Sunday bite. It was so nice to sit on the outdoor patio. The menu is very large! Sifting through the cocktail options was actually pretty challenging! My friend's kumquat mimosa ($15) was really delightful. You're paying for gluten-free, non-GMO, organic, etc. labels and the Carytown vibe so if those aren't a priority, I highly recommend going to a traditional Vietnamese restaurant where you will pay 2-3 times less and leave satisfied. Indoor seating is very limited. We sat outside right next to the space heaters although we couldn't feel them so dress accordingly. There are 5 different menus to sort through. The salmon was overcooked/dry and overseasoned, the chicken curry was described as a coconut-based curry but looked like a soup and that hand-cut chicken was apparently cut with the goal of putting all of the edges in? The shrimp was just fine. The vegetable rolls were good and the Sen Fries was a surprising delight. Maybe if you know what to order you'll do better than we did? Our server couldn't answer any of our questions about the menu and ingredients and we had to prompt her to go ask anyone else so we gave up on that quickly. Sen is a Carytown restaurant that I had driven by dozens of times and always thought the facade looked welcoming. I was excited to finally try it for the first time last weekend when a friend suggested it for lunch. On arrival, we had our temperatures checked and then were guided to a four top outside in their open-air tent near a heater. They have indoor seating available too but it looked more spread out in the patio. It was in the 40s out, so we all kept our coats on. Fair warning that it was still pretty chilly nonetheless, but we survived with warm drinks and pho. I ordered the happiness is blooming tea, which arrived with an actual blooming flower in it. So neat -- and tasty too once it cooled off enough to drink. For my meal, I ordered the brisket only pho, as did one of my friends. Another friend ordered the vegan pho, and the other ordered a bahn mi with chicken. Our pho arrived warm with lots of additions on the side to include. I think my favorite part was the broth, but the brisket was pretty good too. Our server was friendly and prompt, and we had the option to pay online. Hand sanitizer was also available upon exit. We chose indoor seating and were given a counter next to a window, which was alright... except for the number of flies that were around the window. They bothered us for the entire meal :( would not recommend sitting at that location. We ordered the Organic Potato Pie and the Special Pho. It was honestly kind of hard to read their menu, which consists of multiple pages on the phone. It's very cramped, so I'd suggest just looking at the menu online before you come or asking for a paper copy. The Potato Pie was very good, and it was kind of like fried mashed potatoes! I also loved the sauce that it came with. The Special Pho was pretty good as well, but honestly not worth the price. You can get a good bowl of pho at any Vietnamese pho restaurant for the same quantity and quality at a much lower price. I will admit that having egg in the soup is a game-changer, but aside from that, it did not taste any different. We also ordered the Blackberry Lavender Twist as our drink, but it was also not worth the price - the glass it comes in is very very small! So, 1/3 of our items were good and the others were just okay. I think Sen is a good place to try out, but not somewhere I'd come back to due to the priciness. If you were a Vietnamese person married to a non-Vietnamese person and their family was in town wanting to experience Vietnamese cuisine without a prior reference point, this would certainly be a great place. Now, if you were me, a Vietnamese person who was born in Vietnam and had your mom and spouse as your dinner companions, then you would be sitting there listening to your mom say, "What kind of food is this?" and you would reply, "It's Vietnamese food, ma." Came here again after a year hiatus for no particular reason then it's a little pricey. Had family in town and wanted to show off a great place for Pho, Vietnamese food, and tea. Service was lack luster especially with how few customers the place had, but we have experienced that there and around Richmond before. The appetizers and tea were good as before. When the entrees came out it was a different story. My husband ordered the Bo Kho Sai Gon - Beef Stew which says it's Grass Fed Flank Steak stewed for 24h. So he's thinking it's going to be melt in your mouth beef. Instead he got a globular structure of tendon, cartilage, and beef hide. He's not one to return food and a tried it and it was tough. I got our waiter and told him. He looked puzzled, even after showing him the glob, but said I'll ask the chef. After 10 minutes he then brings out frozen cut brisket on a plate and said to put it in stew for a bit and it will melt and be better. Husband put it in and waited 10 min, still rock hard; the stew was cold. I asked the waiter to speak with the manager, return the soup, and take the meal preferably off the check since it was inedible. Waiter came back and said that he's sorry he didn't disclaim to us about that dish and many customers have said the same thing but they cannot take it off the check what so ever. That's how it's made here and the way it is. I said can I talk to the manager in person and waiter said unfortunately no. I also told him that on top of that my Pho had chunks of brisket fat, which I ate and meatballs that tasted like moth balls thus ruining my appetite. I said I'll pay because I ate half but my husband did not touch it. The waiter said sorry can't do anything. The bill came to $147! Yes I paid because we do not need police involved over a dispute. What poor customer service. What restaurant manager does not come out, take responsibility, and apologize or make it right so the customer comes back?! [Coronavirus review] I've already been tagging reviews to indicate that things are different during the pandemic and trying to explain how businesses are operating, but in this case, I ate here, my first experience of actually sitting at a restaurant and eating in months, as windows were being boarded up throughout the neighborhood with signs begging people not to destroy local businesses. So while I can't guarantee this restaurant will be there tomorrow, I ate there and I'm going to review it. And I'll tell you what: if any other local restaurant owners need a template of how to run a restaurant during this era, this would be it. They had scannable codes for your phone to view your menu and pay your check as you sit in their ample outdoor seating, delivering an open-air, low-contact experience. On top of that, the menu was pretty amazing. Creative and varied, with ample vegan options. I had an appetizer of fried lotus root slices with a few pieces of okra; nothing against the lotus, but the okra was fantastic and I'm not used to seeing okra at Vietnamese restaurants. More of that please. The more conventional vegan pho I ordered was also impressive, bearing a variety of fake meat proteins and vegetables, flavorful to start but with a side of serious hot sauce. The plate of garnishes included what tasted like mint leaves that had been picked (normally the first minute or two of eating Vietnamese involves picking the leaves off the stem). I added something fresh and fruity off of an ample beverage menu. Pricier than your average Vietnamese for sure, but I had no trouble seeing where the money went. I could hardly have asked for more out of my first post-lockdown restaurant experience than to sit outside and enjoy intriguing cuisine from a smoothly running business on a beautiful day. Also, as a person at increased risk for COVID, I felt extremely safe dining here. I really appreciated the fact that they took our temperatures before we were even seated on the patio.
